Cosmetology
By: Alicia Scott
Introduction A cosmetologist offers a range of beauty services to clients. Most work in a
salon alongside of other cosmetologist and beauty specialists. There is formal education requirements for becoming a cosmetologist and there are
multiple opportunities for employment for a trained and licensed cosmetology professional. I also chose this job because I love doing hair
cutting it, Styling it, coloring it, I always do my own hair and if I say so myself it looks pretty good.
<--- I love doing my own hair.
Nature of workCosmetologists care for people's hair, skin, and nails. They are also called
beauty operators, hairdressers, or beauticians. Most cosmetologists work in beauty salons, and many have their own businesses. Some work in unisex
shops, barber shops, department stores, hospitals, spas, resorts, and hotels. Cosmetologists work with many types of beauty products and often sell
them at their salons as well.
Working conditionsBarbers, cosmetologists, and other personal appearance workers usually work in clean, pleasant surroundings with good lighting and ventilation. Most work in a salon or barbershop, although some may work in a spa, hotel, or resort. Good health and stamina are important, because these workers are on their feet for most of their shift. Prolonged exposure to
some hair and nail chemicals may cause irritation, so protective clothing, such as plastic gloves or aprons, may be worn.
Training To become a Licensed cosmetologist you will need to obtain 1500 hours at
an accredited cosmetology school. Some schools allow you to complete 1200 hours and go on and complete 300 hours of supervised
apprenticeship. After you have completed your 1500 hours you must take the state board test. You must pass both the written and the practical portions of the test. After passing both test you will be awarded your
cosmetology License. You will still be required to do Continued Education to keep your licence.
Job outlookCosmetologists provide a variety of services to help enhance the appearance of others. Cosmetologists include manicurists, makeup artists, hairdressers and other beauty salon workers. In addition to technical know-how, successful cosmetologists must have great communication and customer service skills. They must also possess strong marketing skills in order to sell services and find and keep customers. Thanks to phenomenal job growth, the overall outlook for this field is strong. However, earnings and competition may be a cause of concern for some aspiring cosmetologists.

Uses of Technology in CareerTechnology is becoming an important element in the field of cosmetology. Most salons use computers to make appointments for the clients, also you could use the internet to order and buy supplies online, or you use a computer to help your clients decide which hairstyle is right. The program works like this: the client brings in a picture and we copy it into the computer. The client's picture then appears on the computer monitor. We can experiment with the picture to show how they would look if we changed their hair style. The computer can show different haircuts, perms and the newest hair colors and highlights. This makes it easier for the cosmetologist and the client, because if the client wants a big change in style and he/she isn't really sure, they can get a realistic look at it before it is done. They can see how they will like it.
Summary I would actually love to go into cosmetology I love
doing hair I always do my own and some of my friends hair. I cut, style, and dye hair and i'm pretty good at
it.
