The city Oradea/Großwardein is the capital city of

Bihor County, in the Crièana region of north-western

Romania.




Oradea/Großwardein is located at 12 km from

Hungarian border and 586 km from the

capital, Bucureèti.




With a population around 300.000 people, Oradea/Großwardein

was founded during the 11th century by King Ladislaus I of

Hungary. The first documented mention of its name was in 1113

under the Latin name Varadinum ("vár" means fortress in

Hungarian).

The beginning of University of Oradea goes till the end of the

18th century, "a higher institution for philosophic teaching" is

founded in Oradea in 1780, which was to become in 1788 the

Faculty of Law, the oldest faculty not only within the Romanian

borders but also in a vast region of Eastern Europe.




After 1921, all the courses at the Law Faculty were taught in

Romanian. In 1923, there were founded two theological

academies that gave new dimensions to the academic life in

Oradea. After several years a faculty of letters was integrated,

creating the University of Crisana in Oradea. But in 1934, under

inauspicious circumstances and after 150 years of longstandingactivity, the Law Faculty - the academic nucleus of Oradea - is

transferred to Cluj.

After a thirty-year break in the activity of the Law Academy of

Oradea, on 1 October 1963, Oradea it starts slowly to regain itsactivity adding new faculties until 1983, when Oradea is turned

into an engineering college affiliated to the Technical University

of Cluj-Napoca




In May 1990 a decree of the Romanian Government established the

Technical University of Oradea, later called the University of Oradea.

The University of Oradea adopted the European System of

Transferable Credits, facilitating the didactical process.

Under the new law of Ministry of Education, september 2011, there is

a new classification of universities:

Universities for education and advanced research - will hold bachelor,

master and doctoral studies

Universities for education and scientific research - which will hold

bachelor and master studies

University-centered for education - that will hold Bachelor

University of Oradea was classified in the second group




Today, the University of Oradea is an integrated institution of higher education of this kind, having 18 faculties:
