As a graduate student in Museum Studies, I bring a unique perspective to the institution’s mission of educational research and community outreach. My educational background in cultural anthropology has led me to have a strong interest in international issues, subaltern narratives and community outreach. Graduating from the University of California Santa Cruz, with a degree in cultural anthropology has given me a better understanding of how societies operate. I am continually interested in culture, community, ecological issues and larger social dynamics, which construct and maintain power. My educational experience has provided me with a more nuanced worldview and equipped me with an appreciation of both cultural processes and the importance of subaltern histories and narratives.
The discipline of anthropology has taught me to make the foreign into something commonplace and the abnormal into something understandable. This perspective, which deconstructs common notions of what is normal and has aided in my understanding of American culture as well as an appreciation of political, economic and social issues impacting people globally. Through my education, I am interested in research, community stewardship, outreach and hope to work in the museum field as a career.

As a student at UCSC, I have been able to work closely with both students and professors in creating a diverse learning environment and community. I participated in many student activities and organizations, in particular, Advocates for Congolese Women (ACW). In this student organization, we were looking at the cultural impacts of the current conflict in Democratic Republic of Congo’s region, as well as, the environmental impact of this economic war. Apart from participating in ACW in college I volunteered at Walnut Avenue Women’s Center (WAWC). This local non-profit seeks to empower both women and their families improve their lives through legal avenues and offers support groups. My experience at the WAWC provided me an invaluable perspective on issues affecting the local community.
For four years I volunteered at the Monterey Bay Aquarium, and though I did not pursue marine biology in college, marine life and ecology is still a constant and growing interest of mine. I’ve worked and volunteered for non-profit organizations, which promote both the perseveration of the natural world, as well as a commitment to social activism, giving me a more holistic view of cultural and regional studies.
