Power Plate & The Post Natal Client
Jenny Burrell BSc (Hons)
Director of Burrell Education, London, UK
W.E.L.L 2013 Summit Presentation
My Background & Experience In Brief
• I don’t ‘work’ for Power Plate!
• I created a programme and then applied WBV then went to Power Plate. We partnered in creating a REPs Endorsed Licensed certification now taught in 8 countries.
• I was always pretty successful in helping clients achieve their goals but personally never had a huge amount of faith in Kegels being THE ONLY WAY and suspected that they were ineffective on 3 levels:

The Problem With Kegels……
• Kegels rely too much on CONSCIOUS connection with the PFM whereas we all know that there is an UNCONSCIOUS & MOVEMENT-BASED COMPONENT PF strengthening and function.
• Kegels don’t involve the VERY FUNDAMENTAL link to the respiratory system and diaphragmatic activity.
• Your Kegel strategy/understanding is intimately linked to the competence/understanding of the teacher to convey information correctly.

The Problem With Kegels…………….
• PF exercise seen as an emergency measure! Needs to reclassified as ‘on-going/essential’ like cleaning your teeth.
• Kegels are too vague and not ‘hooked’ into any meaningful activity.
• Kegels don’t prepare the client for the Activities of Daily Life and MOVEMENT! Ultimately, no one leaks when they are still so AFTER A RE-CONNECTION STRATEGY IS ESTABLISHED…..we have to condition clients for the movement in their lives.

A few glaring omissions for many of us in fitness & clinical settings…..
• We need to inject the PERSONAL into the PROFESSIONAL!
• Move from ABSTRACT & DISTANT -> CONCRETE & PERSONAL.
• Simply not just about solving the puzzle but serving the person!

The 3 Key Factors At Play for PF/Core Reconditioning with Vibration
(C) Burrell Education 2012 www.burrelleducation.com 6
The 3 Key Factors At Play for PF/Core Reconditioning with Vibration
• Tonic Vibration Reflex – a pre-tensed muscle (whether concentrically or eccentrically) + vibration = improvements to muscle fibre recruitment and transmissibility of the load which during a ‘exercise session’ leads to improved increases in strength and potential power compared to un-tensed muscle. Can the strength of a Kegel be increased by factors such as resisted adduction plus vibration? YES!
7
The 3 Key Factors At Play for PF/Core Reconditioning
• The Synergyistic Myofascial Relationship – between the deep lateral rotators of the femur & Pelvic Floor – especially

The 3 Key Factors At Play for PF/Core Reconditioning
• The Synergyistic Myofascial Relationship – between the ligaments such as the Anterior Longditudinal Ligament, PF and Abdominal Aponeuroses – both trunk extension and flexion fire/affect the PFM – (Myers).

The Post Natal Fitness Client – What’s Changed & What Needs Restoring
• Abdominal Wall Dysfunction – Stretch Weakness, Tissue Trauma, Diastasis & C-Section ‘disconnection’.
• Pelvic Floor Dysfunction – Tissue Trauma (minor to major). Mostly urinary stress.
• ‘Core Amnesia’ – levels of neural/connective tissue connection are low.
• Faulty breathing pattern – the ‘core-piston’ doesn’t work. Client has developed non-optimal strategies.
• Low back pain caused mainly by lack of ‘synergy’ in the entire core.

Three Areas of Interest
• The influence of Whole Body Vibration on the Strength of Kegels. Can Kegel strength and therefore total strength gains be increased by the application of WBV?
• The power of Whole Body Vibration to stimulate the Pelvic Floor unconsciously without the aid of Kegels – Can functional movement & vibration trump Kegels?
• The power of ‘movement plus breath’ to stimulate the Pelvic Floor unconsciously without the aid of Kegels – Do we need Kegels at all?

Kegels – Floor Standing

Pelvic Floor Activity During Traditional Kegels on Floor
Max = 75 uV
Kegels + Whole Body Vibration
(C) Burrell Education 2012 www.burrelleducation.com 16
Pelvic Floor Activity During Kegels on Power Plate
Max = 95 uV
What REALLY Gets The Pelvic Floor Working!
Unconscious Stimulation Uses:
• Mindfully re-connecting
• Instability
• The Breath
• Vibration
• Gravity
• Neutral Pelvis Position/Optimal Posture
• Adduction
• Abduction
• Multi-Planar Movement
• Dynamic Whole Body Integrated Movement
• Neural Stimulus
• Mirroring the movements of ‘real-life’!

Subjective Client Reports
• Improve PF Function on a scale of 1 to 10 (1 being poor, 10 being good) - All improved from 3-4 up to 7-8. It stopped being ‘an issue’ either during or outside the session.
• All reported improved global strength and stamina.
• All reported improved energy levels.
• All reported improved positive mind-set.
• All showed significant fat loss and ‘felt better in their clothes’.
(C) Burrell Education 2012 www.burrelleducation.com 18
Outcome Summary
• WBV increased the strength of Kegel contraction.
• The resting tone of the PFM increased just by standing passively on the plate, thereby providing work for the PFM throughout the entire session. Imagine! A dedicated 30 mins of INTEGRATED CORE STRENGTH work 2-3 times per week that was easy to teach, clients adhered to and got results from!
• Movement & breath without Kegels, generally stimulates the PFM MORE than Kegels alone, performed in the traditional manner.
(C) Burrell Education 2012 www.burrelleducation.com 19
Outcome Summary
• 30 minute workouts that incorporated the principles of Exercise Post Oxygen Consumption (EPOC) to improve post baby fat loss were easily integrated.
• Clients progressed to their goals much quicker than I had previously experienced in over a decade of work.
• Client’s instantly felt more connected to their core and hopeful that restoration could be achieved. My job has become much easier!

Vibration - Helping Women to Heal & Restore Hormonal Homeostasis
• Positive influences on blood flow – ‘muscle-pump’ effect.
• O2 IN – CO2 OUT
• Lymphatic Reflux
• Increase in bone density
• Non-exhausting but highly effective workouts
• Increase in hGH and Testosterone – the fountains of youth!

My Hopes & Dreams
• This work can be expanded to a large scale study where the benefits and value of WBV and movement will be confirmed as viable therapies for the PF rehab/restoration/incontinence.
• WBV will be seen as a hugely positive tool in the war against incontinence and PF failure.
(C) Burrell Education 2012 www.burrelleducation.com 22
My Hopes & Dreams
• Physical/Physiotherapists and Medics will seek to understand and gain experience of WBV and the PP for the full spectrum of its worth.
• There will be specialist programmes/streams in mainstream fitness clubs and therapy clinics who offer those in need a dedicated service from well-educated wellness professionals using these principles.
