THE GRAPEVINE
The Quarterly Newsletter of the Florida Family Child Care Home
Volume 24: Issue 1 January 2016 “Don't watch the clock; do what it does. Keep going.” ~Sam Levenson~
FFCCHA members have answered my challenge to grow new leaders. There were approximately 60 members in attendance with 15 being first time attendees at the FFCCHA October Quarterly Meeting in Ocala. Also, 37 members were in 2 trainings on Sunday morning. A job well done! I know we can continue on with this voyage of growing FFCCHA.
Let’s take the torch again and “pass it on.” Let’s move it forward and stay focused as we continue to follow the “Voyage of Growing New Members and Leaders” for our association. Hooray! Let’s hear it for FFCCHA"!
I want to share a famous quote:
n n s n n n s d n d s
d n s nd serve. You only need a heart full of grace. A soul
n d M in in
Remember the challenge, take the torch and pass it on. YOU are the one who can serve!
Let’s serve, let's work together - to grow new leaders and members for FFCCHA!

FFCCHA President

Pages 2, 4, & 10

Farm Fresh Right to Your DoorBy: Alina Soto, PREVENT Obesity Liaison
Family Child Care Home providers work hard to offer the best nutrition to the children in their care. Florida offers a rainbow of locally grown fresh fruits and vegetables, but how can you benefit from the healthy produce grown in your neighborhood? Say hello to FRESH FOR FLORIDA KIDS.
The Florida Department of Agriculture’s (DACS) Farm to School, the Florida Department of Health’s (DOH) Child Care Food Program, the Department of Children & Families (DCF) Office of Child care Regulation and other partners are launching a new and exciting collaboration just for pre-schools. By bringing pre-schools and local farmers together, child care programs will have an opportunity to purchase locally raised or grown produce.
Why not grow healthy fruits and veggies in your own garden? With a focus around MyPlate and alternatives to screen time, we will provide training around safety in the garden, outdoor classrooms, gardening skills and programs such as Harvest of the Month. Stay tuned to learn more about fun and practical tools to help you and your children to “dig in” and eat healthy. See you in Clearwater or at a P.R.E.V.E.N.T. Obesity training near you.

It’s true; Providers Appreciation Gift Exchange is back by popular demand! We all know what this date means to Family Child Care Providers in Florida! I will spare you all the details and jump right off into this FUN event we can have among ourselves by showing appreciation, love, and kindness to each other.
The FUN Part: How Can FFCCHA Celebrate National Provider Appreciation Day?? In honor of you, and your tireless efforts as FAMILY CHILD CARE providers and educators in Florida we would like to have a special gift exchange to celebrate Provider Appreciation Day on Friday, May 6, 2016. You deserve a “BIG THANK YOU” on this special day and gifts from all! We hope you will join us, as we celebrate Provider Appreciation Day by providing each FCCH provider who participates with a special gift to show love, respect, and gratitude toward each other. After all, family child care is the preferred method of child care for birth to five.
This year we will change it up a tad bit. We are starting earlier so you can have the option of also sending small gifts, cards, wish you well notes, children drawing/letters or anything appropriate beginning Feb. 8, 2016 until June 24, 2016 to each secret provider. All secret providers will reveal themselves at the FFCCHA 2016 Conference Luncheon with their “BIG” gift valuing between $25-$35. I'd love to see as many providers participate as possible. Please be sure to follow through. It's no fun if providers send you gifts and you don't send theirs out. Let's make this the best exchange yet. You do not have to provide small “gifts” if you do not wish, you can provide only your “BIG” gift at conference.
Keep in mind that this is a volunteer activity. Therefore, if you wish to participate, you will deliver a gift and follow through with all rules and requirements. For more information about the Providers Gift Exchange, email: Eva Anderson at [email protected] Volunteer Secret Provider forms will be posted on FFCCHA website www.familychildcare.org

On December 15, I went to the local office of Congressman David Jolly in Seminole, Florida to ask for his support of current legislation that is being heard in Washington D.C. I spent my time speaking to J. D. White, the Chief of Staff regarding the USDA Children and Adult Care Food Program. Current legislation is being heard in Washington D.C. to hopefully increase the number of snacks/meals that may be served to children that stay extended hours in care. J. D. along with one of Congressman Jolly's aides listened to what I had to say and took notes. They were also shocked to see the difference in pay between Tier 1 and Tier 2 reimbursements for providers who live in his district. The Legislative Liaison position is open. If you are interest please send your application to the nomination chair.

Unidos como Latinos!!!! Bienvenido 2016!!!!!!

What is a Mentor? According to Merriam Webster’s Dictionary it is: a noun-the friend whom Odysseus put in charge of his household when he left for Troy. He was the adviser of the young son Telemachus.
As noted above, mentoring is nothing new; people have been mentoring others for thousands of years. Now it is time for Florida Family Child Care Home Association (FFCCHA) trained mentors to become greater leaders and to reach out and touch the lives
of other providers in their state. There are many providers who are just waiting on you to make that connection with them. That’s the Power of Mentoring Others! In my mind, mentoring is an essential leadership skill that we should all have from being professionals, quality family child providers, and educators. We have the power and are able to manage the children we care for, to motivate them, as well as their parents.
Again, “That’s the Power of Mentoring”, the ability to help others develop their hidden talent to learn, to do things, to be motivated, become more efficient in their jobs of caring for their own family; and the children they care for. Mentoring is animportant skill to process and understand. We, as family child care providers, have the power to empower many; we empower the children we care for. We empower the parents by discussing developmental appropriate activities and different ways of learning for their child(ren) in care. Many providers have taken the FFCCHA Mentor Training, but may or may not have used it to their maximum abilities.
Reflecting back to when I took FFCCHA Mentor Training many years ago I was confused, lost, and did not know many providers in my area. I knew I could do something and even be more, if only I knew how! That’s when I took the mentor class under Cathy McCoy & Brenda Ives leadership. I learned a lot, but not enough, as I was hungry for more. So I begin the journey of becoming astronger and better mentor. I took lots of online training; I read many books on mentor/leadership and took many webinars to become a better and stronger mentor.
I even signed up to become a national/international mentor and that’s when I met a new friend and become a mentor to Nabyonga Regina from Uganda, Africa. When I was contacted and asked if I could mentor this person from Africa, I was a little skeptical and hesitant. A few days passed by and it was still on my mind to say “Yes and Just Do IT”. So I did! As you see, she wanted to start a family child care in Uganda and was struggling on how to start and run her business. We emailed each other for a while, and now Nabyonga, her son Tonny, and I often Skype each other. I did my homework by searching child care resources in her country; I gave her some great resources to read…To be continue next issued! Make sure to READ all about it!

Chapter News Submitted by Nancy Nairns, FFCCHA Chapter Coordinator
CHAPTER REP OF THE QUARTER: Bill Nairns, West Pasco Family Child Care Home Association (Area 19)
Energetic is all I can say about the group of Chapter Representatives that attended the October meeting in Ocala. There were many new faces and everyone brought new energy, ideas and enthusiasm to our meeting. A big welcome to the ladies in the Titusville Area, Brevard County! They are starting a new Chapter, Space Coast Family Child Care Association. With their first meeting held on November 14th, we continue to work together on making this a successful startup.
We have continued to improve on the simplicity of our reports, time lines and Chapter Reps requirements. A checklist and forms were distributed or emailed to each Rep so they would know their job responsibility, forms needed in their books as wellas when and what reports are due to FFCCHA for tax purposes. Remember to send info about your Chapter to be posted on the FFCCHA website.
Reminder: Chapter Reps from Areas 22-31 are responsible for bringing a door prize valued at $25.00 to our Leadership Summit in February.

Win a Free Hotel Night for 2016 Conference!! And Get your Name/Family Child Care Home listed in the conference program!
Here’s how: Encourage your parent/clients to participate as a Parent Sponsor of the conference. For every $25 collected, your name (Provider) will be entered in a drawing for a chance for the free night. Winner will be announced at the end of the Full Board Meeting in April in Ocala.
Copy PARENT sponsor forms in the January or April issues of The Grapevine newsletter or print forms from the conference page on the web site: www.familychildcare.org
Give the forms to parents and collect the payment. FFCCHA must receive the payments by April FB Meeting to be eligible for the drawing.
For parents entering the photo contest, the deadline is MAY 5 to EMAIL photo to [email protected] and payment must be sent separately and received by May 5, 2016 too.
If you have questions or want ideas on how to get your chapter members and parents to participate, contact Lula Owens via email: [email protected] or call 904-779-9988
Here’s some ideas that provider used to get parents to participate:
1. The provider takes a photo of each child and displays it on a wall at the FCC home and asks parent to make adonation. If the parent makes a $15 donation or more, then the provider emails the child’s photo into the photo contest for the parent.
2. Mail form to all past parent clients and hand write a note on it asking for a “generous” donation.
