Knowing God in the MarketplaceWhile I was with them in the world, I kept them. ~John 17:12

We can get so caught up in moving through the day to day routines of our lives that we can forget that God is ever present…with us.

We rush through the daily activities in a hurry to get beyond them and into what we consider the real life of our spiritual walk: evening Bible Study, choir rehearsal, Sunday morning service or evening prayer.

We are reluctant to leave our morning watch and move into the preparations for our day’s work. Our jobs are seen as irrelevant and just a means to an end. We speak the language of waiting and when: I’m just waiting to retire…When my ship comes in…When I get this or when I get that… And it all blinds us to the present moment in the present day in our present locations and our present responsibilities. It can deafen our ears to the voice of God in our present saying, “I am in it all. I am with you.”

God wants us to know that He is in our world. He is an active presence in our lives. He is with us.

There is no task too small that does not involve God – teaching, training, correcting. There is no job where He has not gone before us to set the stage for our arrival, where He has not established the lessons for us to learn, the character-building exercises He will put us through, or the path upon which we are to tread however stony or rough.

God is with us through it all. See His hand upon our bank account. Watch how His footsteps suddenly appear when we have lost our way. Hear His instructions in times of trouble telling us how to make it through.

All of it happens in the day to day hours and minutes of our lives as we do the small, boring, mundane daily tasks assigned to us.

These things do not take us away from our time with God or our work for God. They are evidence of the depth and the richness of a relationship with Him available to us right here in the work we do. They are opportunities for us to know God with us…right here, right now.
