Just Say Thank You

The goodness of God can be so potent that it can overwhelm us. We know that we don’t deserve it.

We know that we have done nothing to earn it, so much so we sometimes try to sabotage ourselves out of receiving it, or we try to think of ways to repay it.

Good things can come not and heavy, one blessing after another. God can open all the windows and pour out upon us.

We feel inundated by his love. We don’t really know how to respond.

We look for reasons. We try to find justifications. We search our memories for what we’ve done to deserve any of it.

Did we pray right this time? Did we cry out loud enough? Did we do really good deeds? What have we done to deserve this?

There is no explanation for what God does.

God does not have to have a rationalization for loving us and showing it.

God is love. And if that love manifests in what makes us happy, feel good, cared for, satisfied, and loved, then we should understand that what comes to us is not because of us.

What God does for us is not because of who we are. It is because of who He is. We just need to say thank you.

When God pours out, just say thank you.




BALTIMORE, MD -- It is with great pleasure that the PowerMagazine publisher and staff extends a hearty congratulations and welcome to Dr. Louis-Charles Harvey who was recently appointed to serve as Presiding Elder of the Capitol District of the Second Episcopal District of the African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church as we go forward into 2015. While the magazine will follow up with a personal interview in the new year, it is important for us to notethat Dr. Harvey’s esteemed appointment was made after the retirement of Presiding Elder Emeritas Goodwin Douglas.

Prior to this appointment Dr. Harvey served as Presiding Elderof the Potomac District, Washington Annual Conference where he served since his

appointment by Bishop Vinton Anderson in June 2001 and subsequent reappointment by Bishop A.J. Richardson and Bishop William P. DeVeaux.

He has served as a faculty member of Ebenezer AME Church Bible Institute (Fort Washington, MD); has served as Visiting Professor of Ethics, Howard University Divinity School

and is a member of the Board of Trustees of Georgetown Visitation High School in Washington, DC.

Dr. Harvey is a life long member of the African Methodist Episcopal Church and has been an ordained elder for more than 30 years. His career in Christian ministry has been rich and varied. As Professor he taught courses in the area of Systematic Theology, Black

Church History, Black Gospel Music, and Christian Ethics at the following seminaries: Colgate Rochester, United Theological Seminary (Dayton, Ohio), and Payne Theological Seminary, Wilberforce Ohio. Moreover, he has served as Pastor or Associate Pastor in the First, Thirteenth, Third and Second Episcopal Districts. He is renowned in the AME Church as scholar, theologian, ethicist, workshop leader, preacher and writer. He holds several degrees; BA, MD, & Ph.D.

Dr. Harvey is also a noted theological writer and he has written and presented articles for The AME Position Papers for many sessions of The A.M.E. General Conferences. He has authored and published manyarticles dealing with Black Gospel Music, Black Theology, ChristianEthics, and Black Religion in Great Britain. His work has beenfeatured in many scholarly Journals including, The AME Review, The Journal of Religious Thought, The International Review of Missions and in the following books: From Brother to Brother: Black Men in Prison and Something More than

Human. In addition, he co-edited and contributed chapters to: The A.M.E. Pastors Manual for the 21st Century (2000) and A Model of a Servant Bishop (2003) which is a collection of essays describing the ministry of Bishop Vinton R. Anderson. Dr. Harvey also contributed an article to the July-September 2006 edition of the AME Review entitled “Another Look at Theodicy andthe Hurricane Katrina Event”.

On July 31, 2010, Dr. Harvey was joined in marriage to Michelle Stevenson, a retired Air Force Officer. This distinguished Christian servant-preacher administrator, ethicist preacher and theologian is the proud father of three children Marcus Louis, who recently completed all requirements for the PhD at Emory University and is nowAssistant Professor of Religion at the University of North Carolina at Ashville, Melanee Charles who received her Master’s Degree from Boston University in May 2010 and is now a doctoral student at the same institution and Jared Stevenson, fourth grade student at Bishop JohnWalker School for Boys in the District of Columbia.

RIVERDALE PARK, MARYLAND — Lets face the fact that as we celebrate the January 15, 2015 birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King’s, the civil rights movement as we have known it has been severely diluted over the years. African Americans nationwide find themselves —in the middle of the second decade of the 21st century no less— sorely seeking a renewed civil rights equality movement.

The headlines in social media, television, newspapers and various other communications mediums across the country read eerily similar to those witnessed in the mid-20th century as the blacks struggled to find equal treatment in the shadow of the post-Jim Crow era.

A series of truths indicate that King and architects of the 20th century civil rights movement set a blueprint for us to follow for needed change in this new century.

A sad truth is modern era blacks are under attack as a people. They are experiencing deadly force measures (often the result is death) at an alarming rate by law enforcement officers and said officers are allowed to walk when brought before grand juries. When blacks attempt to protest, they are met with oppressive militaristic methods which result in arrests and brutal suppression tactics. White American citizens are shooting blacks down in the streets and acquitted when they declare the “Stand Your Ground” defense.

There is an unsolved case in North Carolina where a young black man was hung by the neck on a swing set and black effigies of mock lynchings are done without penalty. The country’s first ever black president has been the target of some of the most heinous and disrespectful behavior from our nation’s legislative body ever witnessed in any presidency. And the list goes on per

who is making the assessments.

The historical truth is King was born on January 15, 1929 and served as the “Drum Major” of the mid-20th century civil rights movement. He was an icon and one-of-a-kind. He is best known for his role in the advancement of civil rights using nonviolent civil disobedience based on his Christian beliefs. His list of

achievements are as unprecedented as they are impressive:

* He led the 1955 Montgomery Bus Boycott and helped found the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) in 1957, serving as its first president. With the SCLC, King led an unsuccessful struggle against segregation in Albany, Georgia, in 1962, and organized nonviolent protests in Birmingham, Alabama, that attracted national attention following television news coverage of the brutal police response. King also helped to organize the 1963 March on Washington, where he delivered his famous “I Have a Dream” speech. There, he established his reputation as one of the greatest orators in American history.

* On October 14, 1964, King received the Nobel Peace Prize for combating racial inequality through nonviolence. In 1965, he and the SCLC helped to organize the Selma to Montgomery marches and the following year, he took the movement north to Chicago to work on segregated housing. In the final years of his life, King expanded his focus to include poverty and speak against the Vietnam War, alienating many of his liberal allies with a 1967 speech titled “Beyond Vietnam”.

* In 1968, King was planning a national occupation of Washington, DC, to be called the Poor People’s Campaign, when he was assassinated on April 4 in Memphis, Tennessee. His death was followed by riots in many U.S. cities. Allegations that James Earl Ray, the man convicted of killing King, had been framed or acted in concert with government agents persisted for decades after the shooting. The jury of a 1999 civil trial found Loyd Jowers to be complicit in a conspiracy against King. The ruling has since been discredited and a sister of Jowers admitted that he had fabricated the story so he could make $300,000 from selling the story, and she in turn corroborated his story in order to get some money to pay her income tax.

* King was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom and the Congressional Gold Medal. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day was established as a holiday in numerous cities and states beginning in

1971, and as a U.S. federal holiday in 1986. Hundreds of streets in the US have been renamed in his honor. In addition, a county was rededicated in his honor. A memorial

statue on the National Mall was opened to the public in 2011.

A glaring truth is that we as a black nation are hard pressed to find a 21st century person or organization to

serve as the new “drum major” who can even come close to King’s selflessness, skill sets and capabilities as well as has such integrity that presidents will lend him their ear. Who has the integrity and clout to be taken seriously enough to lead such a charge? Many of King’s disciples from the 20th century movement are so far up in age they don’t have the energy or stamina to endure such a toil. There are others so tainted (Rev. Al Sharpton’s Tawana Brawley debacle or Rev. Jesse Jackson’s baby mama drama) that even if they had the will, surely those misgivings would be thrown in their face, to discredit them should they try and emerge. And just how many black folks would follow them if they did? The best Sharpton and Jackson can do is help organize and lead protest marches but they will be hard pressed to get a true seat at the table with people who can actually effectuate a change; i.e., national police chief unions, national police unions, legislative committees and the like. Several of the other young high profile 21st century pastors are too busy cashing in on the profits from reality television shows or others to busy counting collections from their mega-churches to undertake




the responsibility. In the 1960s, President Lyndon B. Johnson would not make a move regarding blacks unless he consulted the leadership of National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) … in modern time the NAACP is hard pressed to get a president (especially a white president) to even attend and speak at their annual conferences.

An embarrassing truth is that without leadership the caliber of King, the nonviolent approach has been thrown out the window. Just recently, in retribution for the shooting death of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri and the choking death of Eric Garner in Brooklyn, New York by white officers; a 28-year-old black man named Ismaaiyl Brinsley executed two New York City police officers (Rafael Ramos and Wenjian Liu on Dec. 20, 2014) in cold blood while they sat in their police cruiser.

The hypocritical truth of the heartless and misguided executions was neither officer was white! Brinsley killed two officers of color, one Hispanic and the other Asian. Brinsley was later killed by police when confronted. And it didn’t stop there! On December 26, 2014, the New York City Police Department arrested six people for making threats against police officers. Officials said they had assessed hundreds of online postings and calls to emergency lines, initiating about 40 threat probes, with about half of those being closed or referred to other agencies. Surely King would have condemned this behavior. We as a modern day black nation for the most part certainly have.

The inevitable truth is that the African American nation has to dispense with looking for a drum major. Instead we must first, collectively, issue prayers asking for God’s protection and divine guidance. Certainly the peaceful protest marches worked for King and our other civil rights forefathers so shall they continue to work for us as we shine the light on injustices. But we as also control billions of dollars

in consumer spending power and it stands to reason if that kind of money is denied to certain bastions of inequality, eyebrows will be raised and they forced to humble themselves (remember blacks refused to ride the Montgomery, Alabama public buses after the December 1,1955 Rosa Parks arrest and economic loss forced a change there). Blacks should also work on a local level to get a seat at the table with their local congressmen, senators, assembly persons and police

departments to voice concern and demand justice and change. And with the birth of social networking, efforts can be coordinated nationwide in short periods of time.

The plain truth is the legacy of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., one of the most prevalent and significant in African American as well as United States history. His God-driven wisdom and strength during his leadership in the 20th century civil rights movement must be embraced collectively and comprehensively throughout the African American nation.

For people in the world, January is the month where resolutions are set. Folks hits the gymnasiums, embark on the newest diet craze or set goals for financial gains.

But what, in 2015, will people of faith claim as their resolutions? Do they follow the trends set by the world? Perhaps a spiritual self examination would be a starting point to begin the new year! More specifically, how do we deal with sin in our lives?

In 1 Samuel 15, of the Old Testament, God gave Saul very specific instructions when he was sent to fight the Amakelites. But think aboutit: Here in the 21st century, hasn’t our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ given us specific instruction regarding sin in our lives? Just like God instructed Saul to destroy the Amakelites, Christ has asked modern day people of faith to eradicate sin behavior in their lives.

Saul Disobeys God’s CommandIn 1 Samuel 15, God, through the prophet Samuel, sends Saul on a mission to exterminate the Amakelites. The instructions are explicit: don’t just kill the men, but the women and children also, and even the cattle – spare nothing and no one.

The primary reason stated above is that the Amakelites were exceedingly wicked. If they were not totally wiped out, they would have taught

the Israelites their sinful ways and thus brought them under divine condemnation.

Secondly, those whom God orders annihilated were those who were guilty, those for whom their punishment was just retribution. While their predecessors may have sinned greatly, the people whom God ordersSaul to destroy were guilty sinners themselves. The annihilation of the Amakelites in Saul’s day is the outworking of a command given many years earlier and reiterated several times. Here are three scriptures verifying the point that the Amakelites destruction was indeed prophetic, not just some whim God used to test Saul’s faithfulness.

* 16 and he said, “The LORD has sworn; the LORD will have war against Amalek from generation to generation” (Exodus 17:16)

* 20 And he looked at Amalek and took up his discourse and said, “ Amalek was the first of the nations, But his end shall be destruction.” (Numbers 24:20)

* 17 “Remember what Amalek did to you along the way when you came out from Egypt, 18 how he met you along the way and attacked among you all the stragglers at your rear when you were faint and weary; and he did not fear God. 19 “Therefore it shall come about when the LORD your God has given you

rest from all your surrounding enemies, in the land which the LORD your God gives you as an inheritance to possess, you shall blot out the memory of Amalek from under heaven; you must not forget. (Deuteronomy 25:17-19)

Not only did Saul’s disobedience defy God’s prophesy, his disobedience was multi-faceted in the eyes of the Lord: a.) Saul’s disobedience did not stem from compassion; b.) Saul’s obedience was partial (not complete) because he does most of what God instructs him to do but he does not obey completely; c.) He said he spared the best of the flocks to sacrifice to the Lord, and he may have indeed intended to do this, but his motivation was probably more self-serving; d.) Saul’s sin is somewhat hypocritical since careful examination of the scriptures reveals he is a man who personally did not tolerate anyone who failed to carry out his commands, even when they were foolish and detrimental; and e.) This was the second of two major instances of Saul’s disobedience. The first comes in 1 Samuel 13, when Saul offers up the burnt offering instead of waiting for Samuel.

Christ’s Followers should Strive to Recognize and Die to Sin DailyHere are two scriptures that people of faith could use as a January 2015 ground-zero approach to begin their examination of sin as it pertains to their lives:

Colossians 3:5-6 So put to death the sinful, earthly things lurking within you. Have nothing to do with sexual immorality, impurity, lust, and evil

desires. Don’t be greedy, for a greedy person is an idolater, worshiping the things of this world. Because of these sins, the anger of God is coming.

Galatians 5:19-21 When you follow the desires of your sinful nature, the results are very clear: sexual immorality, impurity, lustful pleasures, idolatry, sorcery, hostility, quarreling, jealousy, outbursts of anger, selfish ambition, dissension, division, envy, drunkenness, wild parties, and other sins like these. Let me tell you again, as I have before, that anyone living that sort of life will not inherit the Kingdom of God.

A tall order? Most certainly! From the midst of the aforementioned scriptures, people of faith will most likely find one, if not several, of the sins listed working actively in their lives today. People of faith must make it their goal to address and deal with those sins. And also face the fact, much like Saul, that they will find themselves holding on to the “king of their sin” or the “finest livestock of their sin.” But there is a solution.

First, remember what Romans 3:23 says: “For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard.” So don’t be discouraged if you miss your mark at some point.

The key to victory over sin however can be found in 1 John 1:9: “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.”

MEET MATILDA V. GWYNN (MAMA TILLIE)The year is 1908, a mere one hundred and six years ago. What a difference a century plus makes. Just think, more than 95% of all births took place

at home. The average life expectancy was 47 years of age. Only 14 percent of homes had a bathtub. Only 8 percent of homes had a telephone, which were all party lines, some shared by at least 5 families. There were only about 8000 cars in the entire United States. The maximum speed limit, in most cities, was 10 mph. Gasoline was seven gallons for a dollar, stamps were two cents, a basket of peaches was fifty cents, sugar cost 4 cents a pound, eggs were 14 cents a dozen, coffee was 15 cents a pound. The average wage in 1908 was 22 cents per hour making the worker’s yearly salary between $200 to $400. In the mist of all of these history making statistics came the birth of one Matilda V. Allen. Born September 18, 1908 in a small town called Mathews Virginia. In November 1908, Prosser Allen and his wife Fannie Jacobs Allen moved their 7 children (Edith, Mary, Sarah, Edward, Peter, Rosa and baby Matilda) into a 6 room farmhouse on one acre of land he had purchased for $50.00 from Mary Winder and her husband EB Winder earlier on March 12, 1907. Matilda was just a baby when her brother Peter carried her in his arms from their old house, in the woods, into their new home.

After the family settled in the home the old county post office was moved to the property, added on and used as the family kitchen and dining room. Later on the bedrooms and sitting rooms were built by Prosser Allen with the help of his two sons Peter and Edward. Today, still standing, the family home is also 106 years old.

Being the youngest of seven children did not take the spark out of this vivacious baby girl. In fact, she quickly took over the reins of life with her insatiable appetite for learning. In those days school was not available for colored people so Matilda spent hours teaching herself how to read and write. Because of her strong will, self- discipline and self-confidence, at a very early age, not only was she astute but she was also poised and well spoken.

Although she loved all of her siblings there was an especially strong bond between her and her sister Rosa. In spite of the fact that Rosa was older, by four years, Matilda became the dominate force between the two of them. Nonetheless as the years progressed so did the strengthened nature of their bond.

The years rolled by quickly and Matilda was now 17. It was then she met and married “Pop Gwynn”. For many reasons the young bride was not content in the marriage so she decided to follow her sister Rosa to Philadelphia. Once there, after finding an apartment, the two sisters became inseparable.




Matilda came to Baltimore in the late twenties where she became one of the founding members of Gethsemane Baptist Church. Her union with this church led her to join and serve as a member of the Senior Choir for more than 50 years. Her years of service has also included helping to prepare and sell dinners, to help with the maintenance of the church, for more than 20 years. By example, she has also taught the younger generation of women the art of being a good mother. Understanding that every aspect of the work of the church needed prayer, Like Anna, the prophetess, “which departed not from the temple, but served God with fasting and prayers night and day” (Luke 2:37) during the time of the birth of Christ, Matilda found the need to also serve as a prayer warrior.

Even in the earlier years Matilda had an impeccable fashion sense and the confidence to match. Her irreverent stylish demeanor coupled with her Godly manner demanded respect from everyone she met. However, because she has been able to radiate Jesus above all else her life in Christ has been and continues to be a blessing to many that come across her path. Her many years of mountain top experiences have spread multiple seeds of wisdom over the valleys of time.

Because of her pleasant demeanor, strong work ethic, excellent organizational skills, and a confident

attitude Matilda gained employment, for a number of years, in the upscale Guilford/Homeland area of Baltimore as a domestic household manager. Her flexibility enabled her to meet any

and all the needs of the families she served. Her duties or responsibilities required her to use the knowledge she had acquired concerning different styles of formal entertaining, protocol, purchasing high-quality items for the family’s use, and other vast resources to fit any occasion. She also provided some hands-

on services, such as cooking, cleaning and running errands.

Yes, Matilda, who earned the title of Mama Tillie over the years, has worn many hats in her lifetime. Using her home made remedies for the sick she has been a doctor, a dentist pulling out all the children’s baby teeth, and with her carpentry skills she has swung a mean hammer fixing and repairing anything that was broken. Because she loved animals she became the family veterinarian for all the family pets. However her love for horses gave her the confidence to outrace any man with her horse and buggy.

If you have never had heavenly cooking, you have not eaten Mama Tillie’s divine savory dishes. According to family, friends and even some of the neighbors, there was and never will be anyone who can stir up pots of excellence to “die for” like Mama Tillie.




However her family all agrees that Mama Tillie’s greatest accomplishment was being the family disciplinarian. As the saying goes, back in the day, she did not take no back talk or sassiness from anyone. As the old folks say “ no tea for the fever.” Because “the warden” as she was lovingly called would “stand toe to toe” with anybody.With an aire of sophistication Mama Tillie shows that fashion is not just for the young. At the age of 100, while being honored she still served as a style icon. This manner of graceful dressing.; adorned by this very stylish woman of God, who still wears her hats truly expresses a sense of style of her own. She strikingly represents a fashionable segment of society — one that should pay homage to this grandmothers’ style and spirit. Her aire of sophistication offers proof from this wise, silver-haired queen that personal style advances with age.”

These days her ability to capitalize on her memory affords her the opportunity to witness to haven seen more changes in one life-time, than any past generation has ever seen. Because of this with the advantage of prospective on her side Mama Tillie’s shared wisdom has become a stabilizing influence in the lives of many. Today at 106 years old, and the matriarch of six generations looking up to her Mama Tillie, and referring to her as blessed, has truly witnessed many amazing changes.

She has seen the evolution of the automobile and witnessed the flight of an open cockpit plane to the modern space ships flying to the moon. She has lived in the days before the TV, The fax machines, computers, the invention of: Neon lighting, the parachute, the radio receiver, stainless steel, sonar, radar, nylon, the jet engine, the helicopter, the microwave, the long playing record, the hard drive, the video cassette recorder, the laser, the computer

mouse, video games, pocket calculators, the personal computer, the digital camera, the compact disk, the world wide web, satellite TV and the iPhone. Oh yes, and the inauguration of the first black president. Believe it or not she was 4 years old when the Wright brothers flew their first plane and

although she wasn’t a passenger she was 8 years old when the Titanic sank. Talk about living during interesting times!

Having crossed many bridges, and made numerous decisions at life’s crossroads her beautiful gray hair marks her with honor. Not only has Mama Tillie been through the hard knocks of experience but she has also experienced that part of history not learned in books.

Now Standing on life’s mountain top she is privilege to experience breathing the rareness of a long life filled with memories far beyond what any imagination can envision. Mama Tillie has truly arrived at the apex of life.Currently 2 million Americans live in




nursing homes. Fifty million Americans alive now are expected to spend their last days in a nursing home. But praise be to God Miss Matilda V. Gwynn lives in her very own fashionably decorated 2 bedroom apartment. Her long abiding faith in our Lord and Savior continues to be her sustaining force. Proverbs. 31:10 “Who can find a virtuous woman? For her price is far above rubies.” Her prayer to God continues to be “Now also when I am old and grey headed, O God, forsake me not; until I have shewed thy strength unto this generation, and thy power to everyone that is to come.” Psalms 71:18

Now that Christmas is over, it’s time to talk about New Year’s resolutions for 2015. I’ve come up with a few for your consideration. 1.) Enjoy Life more. After all, what’s the point if you can’t be happy with you? 2.) Quit smoking. It’s just a nasty habit. Oh, and that means everything even if it’s legal. Marijuana is becoming medically legal, but unless you have a serious illness just stop. 3.) Get more organized with your life. I just cleaned out my closet after three years and found things I forgot I had. 4.) Toss the diet and focus on healthy. The battle of the bulge is ongoing. Just embrace the fight. 5.) Try being nice to folks you live and work with. “NICE” is not a bad four-letter word. 6.) No matter how difficult, focus on the positive. Besides, few people care about your feelings when you are angry constantly. 7.) Take up a new hobby (cooking, gardening, hunting, fishing, a new language…). 8.) Start that business. 9.) Take the vacation or trip you always wanted. 10.) Invest in you. Since resolutions are suppose to be a challenge, mine is to finally get on Twitter, Snapchat, Vine and Instagram.
