Powering the next generationAs the world’s demand for sustainable power grows, so do our contributions to the sector. Our first assignments more than a century ago were for power facilities, and we’ve since set the industry benchmark by installing enough capacity to power 35 cities the size of New York, and enough transmission and distribution lines to circle the globe almost three times.

We partnered with local First Nations to increase employment and training opportunities for the John Hart Generating Station project.

We helped with funding for the Astoria II project by injecting equity and advising on the project debt financing.

A twin unit Enhanced CANDU 6* (EC6*) reactor (1,400 MWe) saves up to 13 or 6 million tonnes of CO2 per year when replacing coal or natural gas, respectively.

John Hart Project

In 1911, our first contracts entailed hydraulic studies for hydropower facilities in Quebec. Today, we’re one of the world’s foremost integrators of sustainable integrated solutions for hydro projects. Our clients value our ability to blend time-tested hydropower solutions with the latest technology to meet unique site conditions, environmental constraints and client requirements. We have powered stations up to 5,330 MW and supported dam structures with heads up to 2,296 feet (700 metres) and heights up to 705 feet (215 metres). We partner with stakeholders to showcase hydro as an increasingly attractive option for reliable power generation and energy storage through pumped storage projects.

LRDIMATALA DAM PROJECT

Program helped maximize socioeconomic benefits to local community

We were contracted to design-build the expansion of the facilities. Specific attention was paid to the community through an Aboriginal worker employment plan. We respected the environment via a customized and nesting bird monitoring program. The project was delivered on budget and six weeks early.

› This 335-MW powerhouse delivers hydro power to 60,000 households.

This project is Canada’s first public-private hybrid partnership in the hydropower sector. We are providing end-to-end services for the new 132-MW powerhouse, and decommissioning for the existing 126-MW facility that is nearing the end of its life. Our design put the powerhouse underground to enhance public safety and reduce the project’s environmental footprint.

› The new water bypass facility within the generating station will help protect downstream fish habitat during the generating units’ temporary turbine shutdowns.

We were hired as the Owner’s Engineer to undertake the detailed engineering design, design review and construction supervision services. The project consists of a storage reservoir created by the construction of Puah Dam, a diversion dam and a 250-MW underground power station.

› The stringent health, safety and environment standards being successfully applied across the project recently led to over 6 million person hours without a Lost Time Injury (LTI).

Darlington Facility

In the 1960s, we played a pioneering role in developing Canada’s commercial nuclear industry. Today, we’re the steward of Canada’s CANDU* nuclear technology and the world’s top provider of engineering expertise for CANDU reactors on four continents. Our nuclear team also provides their extensive knowledge to boiling water reactor (BWRs) and pressurized water reactors (PWRs), offering customized operations, maintenance and plant life management services to public and private utilities around the world. These projects increase the lifespan of crucial baseload power facilities and make them safer to operate.

We are partnering with Aecon to remove and replace 480 fuel channels in each of the Darlington site’s four CANDU reactors. The project includes detailed design and procurement services for reactor components. and the design and building of specialized tooling for the project.

› The refurbished reactors will continue providing approximately 20% of Ontario’s energy for an additional 30 years.

The Advanced Fuel CANDU Reactor (AFCR™) has been uniquely designed with fuel flexibility at its heart. Working with our Chinese partners, we have optimized the proven CANDU core through very few design enhancements to operate using recycled uranium and thorium fuel. Both use our patented CANFLEX* fuel bundle for enhanced reactor performance and increased operating margin.

› Spent fuel from 4 light water reactors can be used to refuel 1 CANDU reactor, generating enough new electricity to power more than 500,000 homes.

Our precision-engineered, application-specific reactor recirculating pump seals will replace the aging seals at the two BWRs at the LaSalle site. Exelon joins many other utilities around the world that have chosen to replace their original pump seals with our reliable and top-performing designs to increase operational safety, performance and reliability.

› Our seals typically provide continuous operation for two to three times longer than OEM seals, resulting in lower maintenance costs.

are provided with reliable power

As a market leader in thermal power, we’ve designed and built more than 48,000 MW of capacity in 200 locations worldwide. This includes natural-gas-fired, alternative-fuelled, coal-fired, diesel power and cogeneration facilities. We design and build the newest generation of power facilities that feature the industry’s most advanced turbines to improve local power grid reliability and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

This nominal 570-MW combined cycle power plant will produces electrical power for the Red Electrica de Peru (REP) substation in Chilca, Peru, and provides 18 percent of Peru’s power.

› Every day, this plant also renders up to 2,000 cubic meters of potable water to the local municipality using its seawater intake structure and water processing equipment.

We provided EPC services for a 166-MW geothermal plant that produces enough renewable energy to power up to 160,000 homes. The plant produces almost 3.5 MW more power than the guaranteed output, translating into increased revenue over the project’s lifespan.

› The plant helps protect the environment by using a water treatment facility that removes hydrogen sulphide.

This Alaskan plant is a highly efficient combined-cycle, natural gas-fired power plant with once through steam generators (OTSGs) that can be duct-fired to increase the plant’s capacity to 200 MW. We completed the project five months ahead of schedule and well under budget.

› The plant is outfitted with turbines specially chosen for their efficiency and fast-start capability, which allows them to reach full capacity in only 10 minutes.

We replaced an aging substation and reconfigured the loads for three substations to help increase the reliability of the Baytown petroleum and petrochemical complex.

› Our forward-thinking design reduces the impact of a potential substation failure by reconfiguring loads so that regular maintenance can occur without causing multiple outages. This reconfiguration also ensures that a bus or substation failure will have a smaller impact on the serviced complex.

For over a decade, we combined our engineering, construction, financing and asset management expertise to connect an impressive power system, resulting in a sale to Berkshire Hathaway Energy.

› By using our vast experience in HVDC and FACTS, our work on these projects made significant and historic contributions to AltaLink’s province-wide network of transmission lines and substations that services 85 percent of Albertans.

Our Owner’s Engineering services connected six countries with six gas-insulated substations, 621 miles (1,000 km) of alternating current lines, 28 miles (45 km) of submarine cables, and a back-to-back high-voltage direct current (HVDC) converter station.
