Power Electronics has written another chapter in the history of Solar Industry. The company has successfully commissioned over 30 parks all over the United Kingdom’s geography, totaling more than 350MW in less than 2 weeks time, half of them (175MW) in only 48 hours, with more than 660 MW installed in Great Britain.

The Solar sector in the UK, thanks to the ROCs scheme recently established by the British Government has seen now more than two years of successful growth of their renewable energy sector. This past 31st of March was a mark in the calendar when the ROCs scheme were to be brought down from 1.6 to 1.4, due to this, all companies with solar projects in the UK were making all possible efforts to connect their parks before this deadline.

Power Electronics realized that successfully commissioning more than 350MW in two weeks in more than 30 different locations over the country was going to be one of the greatest achievements in the recent solar history. For this we began months ago to prepare a plan that was to bring over 60 engineers from all over the globe to the UK during the month of March.

This was possible because Power Electronics (PE) is an industrial corporation, coming from the Drives & Soft starters business, both in low and medium voltage and our 24h service all over the world covers sectors as demanding as: Mining, Water, Oil&Gas, among others - in more than 30 countries with our own subsidiaries. This way, we were able to organize a team of 60 PE engineers, including 15 permanently based in U.K, that flew over from Germany, Spain, France, Italy, and other countries, to make sure that each plant would have the necessary manpower to connect at any time, no matter the cost.

This leads us to a capital detail of this achievement, it was totally FREE for all our clients. PE hasn’t charged one single pound or euro in any of these commissionings. It is part of our philosophy. As a token of appreciation for the trust they have been offering us for almost 30 years now.

On a more global scale, you might find interesting to know that, while other solar inverter manufacturers are having a tough time trying to rescale their business after markets like Italy, Spain and Germany have seen their numbers diminish, PE has experienced a steady yearly growth of over 40% in the turnover of our Solar Division. For the past 4 years, our philosophy of free 24h service in over 30 countries, learnt from the heavy industry where one minute can be the difference between failure and success, has been writing the present and the future of the Solar Industry worldwide.

This would not be possible without a revolutionary product, an Outdoor Central inverter, made in Stainless Steel, with an operating temperature of 50ºC without derating. And a modular and redundant topology which guarantees that the unit will never stop. Which also starts producing power faster than any other (less than 2.5kW to start-up) and gives you the best results for your investment. Get the shortest lead times in the market and the best quality from the Central Inverter Manufacturer with best growth numbers in the past years.

All this would not be possible if our units weren’t vertically manufactured and integrated in our factories in Spain, where we have cutting edge facilities including anechoic and climatic chambers, our own metalwork division, polymeric paint tunnel, full load-testing facilities and more than 100 engineers in our R&D department. We manufacture our own electronics, our own metalwork and stock more than 400MW in components to offer you the shortest lead-times and the highest quality control processes in the world. Contact us to get more information and witness the future of the solar world.

With great multimillion projects secured recently in the US, Mexico, Chile, Southafrica… and many more, we are sure that this historic success in the UK will bring many others, however this will remain as part of solar history.

PE will continue to grow with even more passion, fueled by our client’s appreciation after our unmatched efforts in the industry we proudly represent.

Power Electronics, the ENERGY you can TRUST.

In your opinion, why Power Electronics philosophy is different in the US Solar Market?

The Power Generation market in the US is changing dramatically and quickly. The US has more electrical generation on-line then all of Europe combined. Within 6 years the US government will close 353 coal plants in 31 states totaling over 60 GW’s of lost electrical generation. With No new Nuclear plants on the horizon, No Hydro plants being built and Natural Gas pricing preparing to double with the on-slot of 11 new export terminals coming on line next year, the US power generation market will need to relay on Solar and Wind to replace 60 GW’s of lost power.

The problem with Wind generation is that it has almost run its course over the past 15 years with its high cost of O&M now realized. (CSP) Concentrated Solar Power is no longer an option due to its cost per-watt, and (CPV) Concentrated Photovoltaics has too many maintenance problems and rising O&M cost compared to conventional PV installations.

Power Electronics will need to focus on strategic product alignment and deepening efforts to enhance our relationships with Developers, EPC’s and Utilities that already have plans underway to take advantage of

power generation shortfalls in the next 6 years. PV Solar will get its share of growth.

What would you highlight about HEC-UL Solar Inverter?

For me it’s simple: • Stainless Steel Construction,• Fully Insulated Against the Suns Direct Rays,• Customizable DC Cabinet,• True Master / Slave Inverter,• 99% Up-time Guarantee,• 1.250kW Platform that fits nicely onto a 2.5MW Skid,• Full line-up of Utility Interactive Features • Electronics are Conformally Coated as Standard• NEMA 3R Outdoor Inverter• Starts Feed in Power at 2.5kW• Competitively Priced

Considering the US Solar Market today, what are the biggest challenges and opportunies that Power Electronics would face?

Our biggest challenge will be on large scale projects that range from 100MW’s to 300MW’s in size. The ability to convince project investors that the reward is greater

than the risk is always a challenge when defending bankability. Over the past two years 100+ good solar companies left the game insolvent. These failures were not limited to module, racking, or inverter manufacturers but across the entire solar space and included many developers and EPC’s. The companies that remain like Power Electronics must reinstall trust and bankability in the market. The opportunities that we have in front of us will become overwhelming if planning for growth over the next few years is not timed properly.

How do you see Power Electronics in five year time?

In 3 to 5 years I see Power Electronics as the number 1 or 2 player in the North American utility market. The speed at which we ramp up to support the business growth is the old chicken or the egg. Add to slowly and you miss opportunities, and too fast and you out run your cash flow.

As an expert in the VSD sector, did you see a potential market for the products of our industrial division in the US?

I see a good market opportunity for medium voltage drives and softstarters in the Oil & Gas sector.

NELSON PINE IND., INSTALLING VSDs AND IMPROVING PROFITSElectricity is a significant cost for NPI so they undertook an energy audit that identified many fans that would benefit from variable speed control.

Nelson Pine Industries is recognised as a world leader in the manufacture of MDF (Medium Density Fibreboard) with nearly 1,000,000m3 of radiata pine logs processed annually at its Richmond plant.

An initial energy audit recommended the installation of variable speed drives as replacements for the damper control systems on a number of fans. Damper control is an inefficient way of controlling airflow; the fan runs at full speed and the air flow is reduced by partially closing off a damper valve. Nelson Pine also experienced issues with old dampers seizing (especially those subject to temperatures >300°C) which caused significant process variations. Following the audit, detailed analysis was undertaken to accurately assess the savings potential and establish how to implement the changes without compromising production.

James Cameron, Project Engineer, “Our first stage involved the installation of nine VSDs on fans with the greatest estimated ROI. Measuring the actual benefits from these vs. that calculated gave us the confidence to pursue the next 15 fans/pumps. Stage one had an energy savings target of 650,000 kWh p.a involving 640kW of VSD controlled motors. For this second stage we fitted kWh metering on the large fans so we could compare energy usage before and after the VSDs were installed.”

Project three was the biggie and involved the removal of a 710kW 11kV motor, autotransformer starter and supply transformer on Line 3 Dryer Fan and replacing it with a 560kW, 400V motor and SD700 VSD. A final fourth stage consisted of on-going replacements with new plant

When selecting a suitable VSD for this project, NPI’s electrical team approached Power Electronics for the SD700 series. “This was the first chance for us

to use the SD700 and even though it was new to us, we could see that its familiar menu structure and overall form factor meant it was going to be simple for us to install and commission – this proved to be the case. Using the SD700 enabled us to utilise many of the existing unscreened motor cables that saved on further installation costs” comments Murray Tewnion, Electrical Supervisor. “Back up service and support was also very important to us as this plant runs 24/7 and the drives are installed on vital plant - if any of these drives stop the plant stops. We’ve known the guys from Power Electronics for many years and know that we can get hold of them any time, any day.”

The final tally saw 26 SD700 VSDs installed on 2887kW of motors. The total average kW before the project commenced = 1950kW, 14.8GWh p.a. At completion of project average kW = 1243kW, 9.5GWh p.a equating to a saving of 700kW and 5.3GWh p.a. At regular unit pricing this represents a saving of approximately $600,000 p.a. However at present market spot pricing this figure jumps closer to a whopping $2,300,000 p.a.

After some time in operation Nelson Pine have managed to realise other benefits from operating their fan motors on the SD700s. “We have seen a reduction in maintenance costs with the removal of old seizing dampers, bearings run cooler, fan blades are lasting longer (owing to reduced speeds), fan vibration issues have significantly reduced (lower speeds) and belt tensions have been reduced so belts are lasting longer. Additionally we’re able to monitor performance more closely and tune our production to a finer degree – the old dampers weren’t very linear in this regard” concludes Tony Donald, Electrical Technician.

So successful was this project that Nelson Pine has been selected for the EECA Awards where they have been highly commended in the EcoInsulation Large Business Award and highly commended in the Contact Energy - Energy Management Award. Power Electronics congratulates Nelson Pine for this recognition.

At a growing rate, Industries and Commercial facilities are embracing new LED-based lighting, motor control devices, power sources and other non-linear loads that introduce harmonic pollution into the electrical distribution system. This harmonic current content leads to a poor power quality causing electrical equipment overload, wear and tear.

Freemaq FQA active harmonic filter (AHF) injects reactive and harmonic current to improve displacement power factor (cos φ) and harmonic distortion (THDi) in your electrical distribution system. The 3-wire Freemaq FQA monitors the load current or the line current at the point of interconnection, and injects the inverse current wave which cancels the harmonic distortion.

Freemaq FQA includes the most accurate dynamic harmonic cancellation algorithms offering a high performance at any load condition to comply with IEEE519. Freemaq FQA is designed to last under the most demanding environments by integrating a modular design, unique iCOOL system for 50°C operation, an easy front access for servicing, and totally sealed and conformally coated electronics.

NEW FREEMAQ FQA - BEST-IN-CLASS ACTIVE HARMONIC FILTER

IS ALL ABOUT POWER FACTOR NOT COS FI

Though many people confuse cos fi (displacement power factor) with power factor (PF), it exist a substantial difference, the harmonics.

PF is the ratio that measures the efficiency of the electrical system considering the harmonic disturbance. As DPF, when the PF reaches unity it means that all the current that flows through the electrical equipment produces work.

Poor power quality has many inconveniences leading amongst others to wear and tear, equipment failure, transformer and wiring overheating and losses, and motor efficiency decreasing. These effects are frequently seen in the facilities and are considered complex effects that engineers consider a nightmare. The new Freemaq FQA will be the most suitable solution and the best partner for those who suffer from harmonics disturbance. Power Electronics will evaluate case by case and we offer you a customized solution to comply with your needs.

POWER ELECTRONICS’ 1.2MW AND 1MW HEC UL INVERTERSACHIEVE 98% CEC EFFICIENCY RATING

PR

OJE

CT

S

Power Electronics group is pleased to announce that Freesun 1.2MW & 1MW HEC-UL inverters have achieved 98% efficiency rating from the California Energy Commission (CEC), making it the highest efficiency inverter in its power class and the smartest solution for large commercial and utility-scale solar inverter markets across North America.

Power Electronics has introduced an upgraded version of its well-known Freesun HEC utility-scale solar inverter by offering a new enclosure that increases cooling performance and transportation. This new design, takes advantages of previous generations improvements and adds a new unidirectional cooling flow that enhances its performance at higher temperatures.

The inverter´s efficiency together with its up-time rates are the two key points that determines the kilowatt-hours of energy produced every year and therefore the cash profit that the plant is producing for the owners or financiers. The HEC-UL is paving the way to success in the US solar market by achieving a 98% weighted efficiency and 98.6% peak efficiency rating, while at the same time offering a 99% up-time rate. These are record ratings backed by its unique modular and redundant topology, where each module includes its own control board, power stage and cooling system, but share common DC and AC buses that work together commanded by the master unit. Therefore, in the event of an unlikely issue, this issue would only affect one of the units and never the entire system, sending simultaneously the energy of the PV string connected to an adjoining operative module. These outstanding features lead to the highest yield and

up-time rates, maximum efficiency at low loads, lowest start feed-in power, minimum maintenance and spare parts stock.

The Californian Energy Commission is the most well known North American agency to compile testing information on inverters for commercial use. The CEC weighted efficiencies are thoroughly measured at different DC voltages and loads conditions, whereby offering a real picture of the inverter performance. The official test reports of commercial and utility scale inverters can be found at: www.gosolarcalifornia.ca.gov/equipment/inverters.php

In Power Electronics we believe in the importance of maximizing your investment. And we know that the inverter is the heart of any solar installation. That’s why we do our best to offer you the highest quality and best value. Our modular, redundant & automatic inverter, our 24h free service, our complete vertical integration, our specialized project department… are all focused on one objective: multiply your energy.
