Al Rusail is a natural gas-fired 665 MW power plant. It was the first state-owned power plant to be privatized in the Sultanate of Oman. In December of 2006, the shareholders acquired the shares in Al Rusail Power Company from the Government of Oman.
The plant is located inland, approximately 40 km west of Muscat in an industrial area. Al Rusail’s primary fuel is natural gas, but diesel oil is also stored on site to serve as a backup fuel. Power capacity and production are sold to the Oman Power and Water Procurement Company S.A.O.C. under a 17-year PPA ending in March 2022.

Barka Phase 2 is an Independent Power & Water project situated at Barka, about 50 km northwest of Oman’s capital, Muscat. The design net power output of the plant in a combined cycle mode is 678 MW. The plant operates on natural gas with fuel oil as back-up. The water production capacity is 26 million imperial gallons a day (MIGD) or 120,000 cubic meters per day.
The facility entered into full commercial operation on 15 November 2009 and commenced the 15-year P(W)PA, guaranteeing the sale of its electricity and potable water capacity and production to the Oman Power and Water Procurement Company.
Desalination for water production involves a Degrémont sea water reverse osmosis desalination plant along with an associated ancillary plant. Reverse osmosis needs less energy than multi-stage flash or multi-effect distillation, the other two major technologies used for desalination. It also provides Barka 2 the flexibility, in certain cases, to buy power from the grid for the purpose of running the desalination plant, instead of depending only on its own generated power.
