Reviewing superb chalets and hotels around the world’s best ski resorts for this third
edition of Powder Retreats, it struck me that while all offer an exceptionally high standard of
accommodation and service, what I valued the most was the peace, and the escape from
the realities of everyday life.
As we battle to master the ever-greater array of communication devices, or to understand the
fee structures of airlines, the chance to just say “Enough!” and escape to a wonderful place in
a beautiful mountain resort becomes ever stronger.
8
In some ways it’s a blessing that technology has made such an
impact in the mountain, with the latest apps capable of bringing
us live snow reports, locating friends on the mountain we didn’t
know were holidaying at the same time as ourselves, or in the
worst case scenario, pinpointing our geolocation and notifying
mountain rescue.
Conversely, emerging from the airport baggage scrum to be
collected by a smiling and efficient chauffeur, who then whisked
you to a luxurious mountain retreat for a superb meal before retiring
to a private suite, and just turning off all those electronic gizmos
seems to become an evermore appealing prospect. So appealing,
in fact, that once ensconced in that peaceful luxury it’s sometimes
hard to motivate yourself in the morning to even get out and hit the
slopes!
It has, of course, been a pleasure to review the superb hotels
and chalets that fill the following pages, and good to know
that despite what seems to be an endless tide of worldwide
economic gloom, entrepreneurs and enthusiasts are still
managing to create brand new and flawless alpine escapes to
add to the established list of the world’s best.
Indeed, the growing choice continues to drive standards ever
higher, making establishments more innovative in what they offer as
they battle to stand out. You will find some imaginative ideas in the
provision of luxury services within these pages.
Of course, a little pampering is always nice to make the experience
extra special, and while the grand hotels offer spectacular spas
covering hundreds, sometimes thousands of m2 of floor space,
even the most intimate properties offer a Jacuzzi, usually with a
wonderful view and a well-trained masseur.
Wherever you end up, I hope you enjoy your Powder Retreat.

Skiing in France has it all – classic ski areas, modern ski in/out areas, high-altitude snow-
sure terrain, and more than two-thirds of the world’s biggest ski regions.
Add to the mix the famous French ambience, a love of good food, and the proximity
to the UK – direct from London by rail, Eurotunnel and fast French motorways, or by
air – and it’s no surprise that nearly half of all ski holidays by British visitors are in French
resorts. About twice as many as to the country’s nearest rival, Austria.
FRANCE
10
It hasn’t always been this way, French skiing has only really
come into its own over the past few decades, as the purpose-
built resorts of the 1960s and 70s matured, expanded and
interlinked. But, in many ways, that later development has been
to the advantage of French skiing, with resort planners enjoying
a blank canvas on which to develop state-of-the art lift systems
and ski runs. Today you can even ski over the border into
Andorra, Switzerland or Italy from French ski slopes.
With notable exceptions, such as pioneering Chamonix,
Megève, Val d’Isère, and more recently Courchevel, luxury
accommodation was harder to find than in other skiing nations
in the Alps until recently too. But the introduction of a 5
category a few years ago has changed all that, combined with a
recognition that ever more people wanted to stay in chalets and
hotels that lived up to the grandeur of the French Alps and their
spectacular ski areas.
Although the new breed of luxury properties and 5 hotels
remain concentrated in a handful of famous French resorts,
other villages like Méribel, Morzine and Sainte Foy are
increasingly home to luxury chalets too, often British-owned and
run. Beautifully converting traditional old farm buildings is most
popular, rather than the modern apartments for which French
skiing is infamous, however, most still employ French staff,
particularly for the catering!
11
Chalet de la Cloche is situated in the heart of Les Brévières, one of seven villages that
make up what is often considered to be one of the greatest ski areas in the world,
Espace Killy. The region combines two of the best resorts in France, Val d’Isère
and Tignes, and of fers an amazingly diverse range of skiing. There is something
for everyone with over 300km of marked pistes. Ski lessons or guiding can be
prearranged with the top instructors in the Espace Killy area.
The Ski-Base team have created a wonderful chalet described by Harpers Bazaar as
a “haven of sensual indulgence”. It is one of Condé Nast Traveller’s top-ten chalets
in the Alps, and was shortlisted for the Design Et Al International Hotel and Property
Awards 2011. Specif ically designed and built to the most exacting standards, the
attention to detail is obvious, even down to the elegant and contemporary interior
where all the furniture has been designed and made uniquely for the chalet. All
bedrooms have a balcony, a plasma TV, a luxury bathroom with Hermès amenities,
and a super king bed with a memory foam mattress.

After a tough day burning up the slopes many
people like to relax in the spa, with its steam
room, pool and outside hot tub, or massages
and beauty treatments can be arranged. The
evening doesn’t end there; guests are treated
to a sumptuous dinner created by the in-house
chef Paul Bell. As well as Paul’s wonderful
food, also included are canapés, champagne,
wine and after dinner drinks from the bar.
At the end of the day one can’t fail to relax
and snuggle up in the incredible 1000 count
Egyptian cotton sateen bed linen and the
goose down duvets, to prepare for another day
on the slopes.
We love the always innovative
cuisine of the in-house chef,
Paul Bell.

Les Chalets de Philippe comprises a small cluster of eight wooden chalets on a south-
facing plateau, with spectacular views of Mont Blanc and the surrounding area. It is
located in a quiet corner of the hamlet of Lavancher, a short drive from the centre of
Chamonix.
Unlike anything else to be found in the French Alps the former shepherd's huts and
famer's alpine chalets have been rescued by passionate Frenchman, Philippe, who has
dedicated himself to their preservation and renovation.
His efforts extend beyond the buildings themselves, with a collection of alpine
antique furniture spread through the various chalets, which is perfectly mixed with
contemporary features such as flat screen TVs and Wi-Fi access throughout. There are
also paintings from local alpine artists and Hermès toiletries in the unique bathrooms.
Spa services provided include two hammam, nine hot tubs, sauna and massage
treatments. A chauffeur is available and cuisine is prepared in your chalet to Michelin-
starred standards. The chalets also have their own cinema for private screenings.
Philippe himself is also your host and never too busy to direct you to the best ski area
in the Chamonix Valley for your needs.
We love the chef’s superb
meals determined by what he
buys that morning from the
organic market.

Situated in the very heart of the old village of Val d’Isère at 1850m, Hotel l’Aigle des
Neiges is a great location for skiing, sitting just 50m from the ski runs and lifts.
The hotel has all the services you need and expect including 24-hour concierge, two

junior suites, are spacious and comfortable, seamlessly blending wood and natural
colours in their design. Each one has a free in-room Wi-Fi connection and a wide
choice of TV channels. A VIP package is available to guests in our suites.
The hotel’s Pier Paul Jack restaurant is a unique concept of three experiences in
one. Le Pier is the contemporary restaurant option, Le Paul is the gourmet restaurant
providing spectacular gastronomic experiences, while Le Jack is the cool cocktail bar
with a refined snack menu.
L’Aigle des Neiges also has an excellent spa and indoor swimming pool. Recently
renovated it comes complete with sauna, steam room and massage rooms where a
wide range of exclusive treatments are available.
We love the great location,

Ideally located in the tranquil, picturesque Savoyard hamlet of Les Bois, 5 minutes from
the centre of Chamonix and a minutes walk to the La Flégère lift. The 300-year-old
Chalet Bibendum is a tastefully renovated holiday home, where the comfort of a luxury
hotel service meets the magic of a bygone time.
The spacious chalet enjoys a beautiful sunny exposure and is designed to deliver
panoramic breathtaking views – it is like living in a postcard!
With special attention to detail, Jolanda and Olaf offer their guests a homely atmosphere
and provide a unique experience from the beginning to end.
Bibendum sleeps eight guests in four ensuite bedrooms, each unique. The central

Chamonix may be one of the world’s top resorts but it sits in a narrow, shady valley, and
finding accommodation that maximises the view stretching high above can be a challenge.
Step forward Chalet Cerisier, which is situated in the perfect spot to take full advantage of
some of the most dramatic views in the Alps. It’s located just outside the famous ski town
in a wide and sunny part of the valley. To the south the twin peaks of Les Drus and the
Aiguille Vert rise to over 4000m, to the west Mont Blanc itself dominates the skyline.
Built by Pierre Trappier, the pre-eminent chalet builder in the region, Le Cerisier successfully
combines a massive wooden construction in the Alpine tradition, with modern aesthetic
and ecological considerations.
Guests can satisfy their every whim, relaxing in the six person sauna or outdoor hot tub,
the pool room or the cinema.
Sleeping ten guests in five bedrooms, each with its own individually designed bathroom,
the chalet is a haven of tranquillity, full of space and light. The large open log fire adds a
cosy ambience, whilst under-floor heating throughout is provided by a geothermal system.
We love the magnificent views
through the huge picture
windows and from the equally
large balcony.

Chalet Fourmiliere in Morzine is a boutique, owner-run, catered ski chalet, which is
quickly gaining a reputation as a gastro-chalet. When you stay here your every need
will be accommodated and no request is too small for the wonderful hosts and their
staff, whose sole intention is to ensure you feel at home in their splendid abode.
On entering the extensively and beautifully renovated Savoyarde farmhouse, it is hard
to believe the building dates from 1805. A unique style permeates through the chalet,
perfectly blending the original features of the building with French antiques and carefully
chosen modern pieces, the end result of which is truly luxurious. The double-height
dining room, with its bar and mezzanine library, is particularly impressive, as is the huge
open log fire in the separate lounge. The six en-suite bedrooms feature super-king beds,
flat screen TVs, and an abundance of toiletries and appliances to cater for your every
need. A stylish black felted pool table and hot tub are also provided for your enjoyment.
Chalet Fourmiliere offers exceptionally high standards of food, accommodation and
service at affordable prices. You will not be disappointed if you choose to stay in this gem
of a chalet and, like its growing number of loyal followers, you will want to return again
and again.
We love the fact that this chalet
company's main objective is
to ensure you have the best
possible holiday whilst staying

Altapura, the first 5 hotel at Europe’s highest resort, Val Thorens, where 99% of the ski
terrain is above a snow-sure 2000m, is a hotel of the future.
Designed especially for skiers and mountain lovers it combines the best décor with the
latest technology to create a multisensory space harbouring a haven of conviviality and
leisure “mountain style”.
Boasting 88 bedrooms, 16 of them suites, three great restaurants, several bars, a
spectacular 1000m2 spa and its own ski shop, guests at Altapura want for nothing.
In the bedrooms the mélange of warm wood tones and vibrantly coloured soft fabrics are
echoed in the welcoming bedding and bespoke line of furniture designed by Nicolas and
Jean-Louis Sibuet, behind the huge bay windows overlooking the Cime Caron. Natural
stone, the major feature in the bathrooms, makes up the final element in creating this
mountain atmosphere.
The Altapura’s Spa Pure Altitude is dedicated to muscular relaxation, physical preparation
and recuperation. A key feature is the Nordic Spiral, an alternating world of dry and
humid heat, punctuated by waterfall showers, and culminating in the igloo for some snow
treatments. The tour is completed by a relaxation séance or a Scandinavian massage with
the oils of three types of fir tree. Bliss.
We love the ski-in/out
departure and the couple

WHY NOT TRAVEL IN LuxuRY, TOO?
Once you’ve secured your perfect ski chalet or luxury hotel suite, the last thing you need is the
stress of battling through airports, and on and off scheduled services, spoiling the start
and the end of your holiday.
Far better to save time and stress by flying at a time that suits you, with a fast executive
check-in and smooth departure – in fact a completely bespoke travel sservice, which typically
reduces travel time by 4 hours door-to-door, when compared with scheduled flight times.
CONCIERGEAVIATION
Concierge Aviation, a dedicated executive aviation specialist, will
fly you from your most convenient airport – probably far closer
than the major hubs used by the scheduled airlines. There’s
no need to endure queues or crowded terminals; just pass
effortlessly through executive facilities. For the ultimate seamless
travel solution, Concierge Aviation can also arrange a helicopter
transfer from your home direct to your waiting aircraft.
Another benefit of using Concierge Aviation is that they can fly
where the commercial airlines can’t: to the myriad of smaller
airports located close to ski resorts. Many leading ski resorts
have small airports only a few minutes away, providing a far
more personal service. Rather than enduring hours crawling
along snowy mountain roads, you can be at your chalet, and
even skiing, before those travelling on commercial airlines have
enjoyed their first breath of mountain air. Samedan airport is
just a few minutes from St Moritz, for example, or there are the
altiports right next to Courchevel and Méribel.
When flying with a private jet you also enjoy flexibility should
your plans change. You simply inform Concierge Aviation and
your flight time can be moved to an earlier or later slot according
to your requirements.
Private jets not only mean a fast and personal service; they really
do mean "private". You can plan your stretch in the air for quality
time with friends or family, and even have a business meeting
– there are no other passengers, only flight crew dedicated
to your safety and enjoyment. You can select your personal
preferences for catering, refreshments, newspapers and
magazines. The aircraft are configured with comfortable seating,
arranged so that you can face your companions, and enjoy
the excitement and anticipation of your holiday or reflect on
the fantastic memories. Private aircraft ensure you experience
quality time at the beginning and the end of your holiday.

This is where it all began, in the summer of 1864, when a clever hotelier challenged some
visiting British "grand tourists" that if they spent the winter in Switzerland they’d find it brighter
and sunnier than London and it wouldn't be as cold, despite being up at about 1829m, and
on top of that they might even have fun in the snow. The bet was placed by the manager of
the Kulm hotel, one of the very few people who spent the season up in the little hamlet of St
Moritz, and the reward was a free stay all winter. Within a few decades, St Moritz was the
leading winter sports destination in the Alps, and the first electric lights in Switzerland were
illuminating the Kulm, today it is one of the most famous of the resort’s 5 hotels.

Most of Switzerland’s best-known resorts would emerge in
the next 60 years, and indeed the country was the dominant
ski destination in the world before the other Alpine nations
really got started. Famous names like Gstaad, Mürren,
Grindelwald, Villars, Davos and Klosters emerged as top
ski destinations, and new resorts were created in stunning
locations such as Wengen, with its views of the Eiger, and
Jungfrau, now a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site.
This was all really before downhill skiing took off, but take off
it did, driven by British pioneers such as the Downhill Only
Ski Club, established in 1925, whose members made use
of Switzerland’s mountain railway network to get a lift up in
order to ski down.
Now, nearly 150 years on, Switzerland remains the country
that most people name as their favourite ski destination. The
combination of magnificent scenery, often spectacular skiing,
atmospheric Alpine villages, and typically excellent food and
service is very difficult to beat. It may also be Europe’s most
expensive ski destination by some distance, but most of its
devotees feel that it’s well worth it.

WHITEPOd LES CERNIERSSWITzERLANd
+41 (0)24 471 3838 | [email protected] | www.whitepod.com
Nestled in the charming village of Les Cerniers, surrounded by a blanket of glistening
white snow and panoramic mountain views, Whitepod offers an unforgettable experience
in the heart of the Swiss Alps.
Whitepod’s unique concept is to provide an unforgettable stay in one of 15 geodesic
domes that surround a central chalet, all set just far enough away from civilisation.
These domes are designed to be in harmony with the surrounding environment,
whilst still being both comfortable and luxurious – guests enjoy the insulated, hi-tech
tents heated by a wood-burning stove, as well as luxury bedding and full bathrooms.
To ensure minimal environmental impact, no electricity is used, and the tents are
illuminated with oil lamps.
Whitepod is located at a snow-sure 1700m altitude, has 7km of ski slopes over a 700m
vertical, and its own private ski lifts, which can be opened day or night on request.
Cross-country skiing, dog sledding, paragliding, snowshoeing, sledging and ski touring
with a mountain guide are all available, too.
The traditional wooden Chalet des Cerniers acts as base camp for the whole resort, and
in its new restaurant offers both traditional mountain favourites like fondue, as well as
more inventive and refined cuisine.
We love the feeling of being
so close to nature on the
mountain, with a private ski
run outside your door.

There’s an immediate wow factor at The Omnia Mountain Lodge, perched as it is on a cliff in the centre
of Zermatt. Passing through a tunnel, you’ll come to an elevator rising up through the rrock, which brings
you to the lobby 1649m above sea level. Here you have effectively passed through a portal into another
world, one where you can forget time, where you are from, where you are going, and just enjoy life.
To help you do just that, The Omnia builds on its great location with exquisite interior design,
based on a contemporary interpretation of the classic American mountain lodge, fine cuisine, a
wonderful wellness centre and seamless service.
There are 30 rooms, including 12 suites, all equipped with the latest technology. There is
no design conformity here; in fact the opposite is the case, each room varying in layout and
décor, and none with a room number. In addition, most rooms and suites have a balcony with
breathtaking panoramic views of the Matterhorn.
The Omnia’s lobby has a library and fireplace, along with a restaurant, bar, boardroom, cavern,
and two sun decks high above the rooftops of Zermatt.
The Omnia’s intimate restaurant is a place you’ll want to spend the evening in, with residents and their
guests equally welcome. Executive Chef Patrick Weber creates modern, uncomplicated cuisine with
authentic flavours, using seasonal ingredients. His food is served to you by staff who are both efficient and

Zermatt is a very special resort, with Europe’s highest lifts, one of the world’s biggest lift-served verticals,
and the iconic backdrop of the Matterhorn making it hard to beat.
The resort is full of top-class accommodation too, so standing out is a challenge. The answer from the
Matterhorn Focus team was to design the hotel like a work of art.
This “Design and Lifestyle Hotel Garni” was created by Heinz Julen, world famous for his eye-catching
creations. With its distinct lines, the architectural style follows that of the mountain railways, creating a
building that is elegant, without being obtrusive, blending perfectly into the mountain environment.
The hotel is not big, with just 30 spacious double, superior-double family rooms and suites, some with
freestanding bath tubs specially created for the hotel, placed to provide a view of the Matterhorn, others
looking on to the resort’s car-free, but often bustling streets.
Heinz Julen was responsible for the interior design and all the rooms are furnished with furniture
and works of art created by him. Nearly all the rooms have a balcony with a view of either the
Matterhorn or of Zermatt.

Facilities include a sophisticated wellness oasis complete
with a wonderful interior pool, outdoor whirlpool, heated
couches, saltwater bath, caldarium, Finnish sauna and
a rest area, which altogether provide complete peace

There are many very special features to the hotel; for
example, the lower station of the Klein-Matterhorn
cable car is accessible in just 2 minutes through an
underground passageway from the hotel. But the key
element of the success of the Matterhorn Focus, behind
the great design and the excellent facilities, is the high
standard of discreet but attentive service provided by the

Lenk is an old spa resort that’s not well known outside Switzerland, but has been
welcoming winter tourists for more than a century, and skiers since the early 1930s.
The village remains unspoilt, and is connected by lifts to neighbouring Adelboden, and
together they offer a considerable 180km ski area.
There’s only one 5 hotel in the village and it’s something special, graded in the even
higher 5 Superior category.
The Lenkerhof Alpine Resort is one of the most modern, most unconventional luxury
hotels in Europe. Here you will find everything you might need to allow you time to rest,
relax and regenerate between your days on the slopes – if indeed you force yourself

One of Lenkerhof’s two restaurants is the Gault Millau 17-point graded Spettacolo
where every meal is a spectacular experience. Everyday there are 15 dishes to choose

What’s so special about it? The rooftop penthouse suite, accessed by private elevator,

“Staying at Chesetta is not like a break in a five-star hotel; it’s like staying with wealthy
relatives who can’t do enough to make you happy.”
Financial News
But how does Chesetta go that extra mile to take it beyond regular 5 service?
Well Chesetta is not a property built for rental; it is the owners' home, and when they are
not using it themselves, they open their door to guests.
Chesetta’s owners grew up locally and carefully selected their staff from the area to
ensure in-depth local knowledge, and to provide a luxurious and discrete alternative to
the typical St Moritz holiday. The staff are employed year-round to look after the property
and, as a result, they not only know the area exceptionally well, but they also work very
hard to make “their home” your home during your stay.
In summertime, they’re sent to widen their experience in some of the world’s great hotels
and Michelin-starred restaurants to hone their skills to perfection.
Located 5 minutes from the centre of St Moritz, Chesetta’s guests have a world-class
resort with a lively nightlife at their doorstep, whilst Chesetta is still a true “get away”
offering tranquility, charm and relaxation in a picturesque village, with easy access to the
slopes, skating, kitesurfing and cross-country skiing.

Waldhaus Sils, a family affair since 1908, is run by the fourth and fifth generations of Dietrich
and Kienberger.
As rich in history as it is in service, quality and facilities, the 5 Waldhaus Sils was built just over
a century ago entirely from materials arriving on horsecarts from the train stations of St Moritz
and Chiavenna. The romantic, castle-like exterior designed by Karl Koller (1873–1946), one of
the foremost Swiss hotel architects of the time, hid amazingly modern concepts and ideas.
It’s a philosophy that continues to this day, because although the Waldhaus Sils is proud to
have stayed within its original physical dimensions, in order to maintain high personal service
standards it has continually evolved from within, adding a wonderful swimming pool, spa and
underground parking, and nearly quadrupling the number of guest bathrooms from 40 on
opening to 150 today! But increasingly, the Waldhaus Sils’ priorities have shifted from merely
modernising the hotel to restoring its vintage charms and character to their 1908 glory. No
expense has been spared in a careful restoration of the bar, the Arvenstube restaurant and the
reading room.
Sils has its own mid-sized ski area and the Waldhaus operates a free shuttle to the slopes. A
lift pass for the full Engadin pass, including the skiing of St Moritz, is also available, with a ski
bus service to the slopes.
We love the welcome given to

own!) – care is free up to 12

Le Cervin has been awarded 14 points in the prestigious Gault Millau guide, and Capri
the best score of any Zermatt restaurant with 16 Gault Millau points and one Michelin

Children are especially welcome at the hotel, with many facilities, including a

Mont Cervin Palace’s leading spa facilities are particularly good and extend over 1700m²,
incorporating a 20m indoor pool warmed to 28°C, an outdoor pool with waterfall,

Austria is the home of Alpine skiing. The sport began in 1905 in the village of
Lilienfeld, not far from Vienna, when pioneer Mathias Zdarsky (1856–1940)
organised the first slalom race on the slopes of the local Muckenkogel mountain.
Around the same time the Arlberg region, and the resorts of Lech and St Anton, was
establishing itself as one of the pioneering downhill ski areas, thanks to the Arlberg
Ski Club and Hannes Schneider’s world-famous Arlberg Ski School, which offered
expertise in the new technique, thus superseding the Norwegian telemark model.

Soon after, some of the world’s best-known ski areas
developed, including St Johann, Kitzbühel, Seefeld,
Saalbach-Hinterglemm (the country’s second most popular
tourism destination after Vienna), and Zell am See.
Today, Austria has over 600 skiing areas, more than any
other country. They are not the biggest or the highest in the
Alps, but for many people they are the best, and before the
rise of France in the 1980s, more Brits visited Austrian ski
areas than those of any other country.
And many still do. Austria’s intimate ski areas are some of
the easiest to reach – many within 90 minutes, often less, of
Innsbruck or Salzburg airports. There are almost no soulless
purpose-built resorts here, due to strict planning laws that
mean almost all resorts are comprised of traditional wooden
chalet-style buildings, with none of the concrete blocks that
blight some of the best-known French, Italian and Swiss
resorts.
Despite having lower peaks than its neighbours, Austria also
has the most glacier skiing in the world, with ten resorts to
choose from opening at various points between June and
September, including year-round Hintertux.
The country also boasts Europe’s only true ski city, in the
shape of beautiful Innsbruck. Three-times an Olympic centre,
Innsbruck boasts its own area ski pass, which includes a ski
bus from your hotel to one of eight ski areas; these include
day trips to the Stubai glacier (with its extensive year-round
skiing) and other big-name resorts.

Italy is home to more than 300 ski areas spreading from east to west along its
northern border, down through Tuscany and the Apennines to ski centres around
Rome, and even on Mount Etna in Sicily. In short, it is one of the biggest and most
diverse skiing nations in Europe.
Italian skiing has a long history; classic resorts such as Cortina d’Ampezzo,
Madonna di Campiglio, and Selva in Val Gardena were famous in the 1930s, after
the first resort had been established at Claviere on the French border. The Italians
ITALY
84
also pioneered purpose-built ski centres with the aid of large
corporations such as Fiat. Famous centres such as Sestière
were created long before the French had thought of them.
There is also a diverse choice of mountain scenery, from
skiing beneath Mont Blanc (Monte Bianco) or the Matterhorn
(Monte Cervino) from Courmayeur or Cervinia in the west of
the country, to the stunningly beautiful pink granite cliffs of the
Dolomites in the east, a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site.
Today, the country is home to some of the world’s largest ski
areas, the most famous being the Dolomiti Superski, which
for more than 30 years has connected a dozen neighbouring
valleys, offering 1200km of piste and about 450 ski lifts all
on one ticket. They include the Sella Ronda circuit, which
connects about 500km of piste around a central mountain,
probably the world’s second largest lift-linked ski area.
But do people visit Italy for the skiing and the scenery? Well
perhaps, but Italians are also famous for their love of good
things and their relaxed attitude to life. Italy’s an excellent
choice if you’re looking for friendly people, where eating the
best cuisine and providing the best service is second nature,
and not something planned out by corporate management.

It’s not well known outside the country, but Japan has more ski areas than almost any
other. It all began around 90 years ago at the resort of Nozawa, already famous for its
hot springs.
Today Nozawa Onsen boasts the largest single ski resort in Japan, with first-class facilities
and the longest slopes in the country, some over 10km long and all with a beautiful view

huge growth in international tourism over the past decade,
though retaining its unique Japanese character, it is the
most English-language friendly resort in the country, with a
high ex-pat Australian population, and a reputation for the
second-deepest powder snow in the world.
Across the Pacific, North America is home to nearly a
thousand ski areas spread across Canada and the USA in
almost every state and province – from the giant destination
resorts of the west to more intimate ski areas in the east.
No one company sums up US skiing better than Vail
Resorts, which now owns seven of the country’s top resorts,
with three in California and four in Colorado including the
original, Vail. Home to the great Lynsey Vonn, Vail turns 50

host the 2015 World Alpine Skiing Championships, again.
North of the border, Canadian skiing is famous for its great
open spaces, its spectacular views and its world-class resorts –
exemplified by Vancouver hosting the last Winter Olympics.
But skiing is equally famous and if anything more popular
on the eastern side of the country; individual resorts can
receive more than two million guests annually, and classic
centres like Le Massif (above the mighty St Lawrence River
in Quebec) benefit from huge investment to create state-of-

Paris/Tokyo architect and interior designer Ciel Rouge Creation created a contemporary
design when Address Nozawa, formerly a simple Japanese-style ryokan, was given a
makeover and became a top-class apartment hotel.
Now Address Nozawa serves as a beacon of colour in Nozawa Onsen, Japan’s original
ski resort, former biathlon host at the Nagano Winter Olympics, and the largest single ski
resort in the country. The hotel is a home-away-from-home in one of the most beautiful and
relaxing hot-spring villages in Japan, right in the heart of the Japanese Northern Alps.
All apartments are fully equipped with kitchenette and cooking tools, which perfectly
combine the comfort of being at home with the pleasure of being pampered at a hotel.
Address Nozawa caters to the needs of both international and domestic customers
who wish to stay comfortably, experience the life of a traditional Japanese village as a
local, and have the freedom to organise their holidays the way they like. The Address
concierge will give you an insider's perspective, enabling you to fully enjoy village events
and activities as well as visit surrounding attractions.
Many other ski resorts are nearby including Hakuba, Myoko Kogen and giant Shiga Kogen.
We love the new take on
Japanese traditional interiors
by French/Japanese architect
firm Ciel Rouge Creation, with
gentle shapes and use of color.

Nestled majestically between the sea and the mountains, the Fairmont Le Manoir
Richelieu in the Quebec resort of Charlevoix is a vision of historical splendour. Rich in
tradition, this exquisite paragon of hospitality blends the quiet charm of the countryside
with the sophistication of a world-class resort.
There’s lots to do here including downhill skiing at the revitalised Le Massif ski hill, or
cross-country nearby. Or you can enjoy snowshoeing, on-site ice fishing, carriage
rides, kayaking through the ice field on the St Lawrence River, a flutter in the casino,
year-round outdoor and indoor swimming pools and whirlpools, and a superb spa.
The Charlevoix region has long been known for its fine gastronomy, and Fairmont Le
Manoir Richelieu’s five restaurants provide visitors with unique dining experiences in
several mouth-watering forms. Le Charlevoix (AAA/CAA Four Diamond Award), with
its innovative cuisine, showcases local products from local farmers; Le Saint-Laurent
offers a “brasserie-style” menu; and Le Bellerive features a varied à-la-carte menu or a
buffet overflowing with flavour.
Only 90 minutes from Quebec City airport, via a beautiful drive along the magnificent
St Lawrence River, Fairmont Le Manoir Richelieu (the “Castle on the Cliff”) has a rich
tradition of hospitality, romance and elegance.

into each and every guest room. Arrive in style with heated underground valet parking,
then go up to your room and discover a flat-panel TV with DVD player, and MP3-player
