    SAFETY RULES

WARNING: Always disconnect sparkplug wire and place wire where it cannotcontact spark plug to prevent accidentalstarting when setting up, transporting, ad-justing or making repairs except carburetoradjustments.

Because a chain saw is a high-speed wood-cutting tool, special safety precautions mustbe observed to reduce the risk of accidents.Careless or improper use of this tool cancause serious injury.

PLAN AHEADS Read this manual carefully until you com-

pletely understand andcan follow all safe-ty rules, precautions, and operating in-structions before attempting to use theunit.

S Restrict the use of your saw to adult userswho understand and can follow safetyrules, precautions, and operating instruc-tions found in this manual.

S Wear protective gear. Always use steel-toed safety footwear with non-slip soles;snug-fitting clothing; heavy-duty, non-slipgloves; eye protection such as non-fog-ging, vented goggles or face screen; anapproved safetyhard hat; andsound bar-riers(ear plugs or mufflers) to protect yourhearing. Regular users should have hear-ing checked regularly as chain saw noisecan damage hearing. Secure hair aboveshoulder length.

S Keep all parts of your body away from thechain when the engine is running.

S Keep children, bystanders, and animals aminimum of30 feet (10 Meters) awayfromthe work area. Do not allow other peopleor animals to be near the chain saw whenstarting or operating the chain saw.

S Do not handle or operate a chain sawwhen you are fatigued, ill, or upset, or ifyou have taken alcohol, drugs, ormedication. You must be in good physicalcondition and mentally alert. Chain sawwork is strenuous. If you have any condi-tion that might be aggravated by strenu-ous work, check with your doctor beforeoperating a chain saw.

S Carefully plan your sawing operation inadvance. Do not start cutting until youhave a clear work area, secure footing, and, if you are felling trees, a planned re-treat path.

OPERATE YOUR SAW SAFELYS Do not operate a chain saw with one

hand. Serious injury to the operator, help-ers, bystanders or any combination ofthese persons may result from one-handed operation. A chain saw is in-tended for two-handed use.

S Operate the chain saw only in a well-venti-lated outdoor area.

S Do not operate saw from a ladder or in atree, unless you are specifically trained todo so.

S Make sure the chain will not make contactwith any object while starting the engine.Never try to start the saw when the guidebar is in a cut.

S Do notput pressure on the sawat the endof the cut. Applying pressure can causeyou to lose control when the cut is com-pleted.

S Stop the engine before setting the sawdown.

S Be alert for springback when cutting alimb that is under tension so you will notbe struck by the limb or saw when theten-sion in the wood fibers is released.

MAINTAIN YOUR SAW IN GOODWORKING ORDERS Haveall chainsaw service performed by a

qualified service dealerwith the exceptionof the items listed in the maintenance sec-tion of this manual. For example, if im-proper tools are used to remove or holdthe flywheel when servicing the clutch, structural damage to the flywheel can oc-cur and cause the flywheel to burst.

S Make certain the saw chain stops movingwhen the throttle trigger is released. Forcorrection, refer to Carburetor Adjust-ments.

S Never modify your saw in any way. Useonly attachments supplied or specificallyrecommended by the manufacturer.

S Keep the handles dry, clean, and free ofoil or fuel mixture.

S With the engine stopped, hand carry thechain saw with the muffler away from yourbody, and the guide bar and chain to the

rear, preferably covered with a scabbard.S Keep fuel and oil caps, screws, and fas-teners securely tightened.

S Use only Poulan or Poulan Pro accesso-ries and replacement parts as recom-mended.

HANDLE FUEL WITH CAUTIONS Do not smoke while handling fuel or while

operating the saw.S Eliminate all sources of sparks or flame in

the areas where fuel is mixed or poured. There should be no smoking, openflames, or work that could cause sparks. Allow engine to cool before refueling.

S Mix and pour fuel in an outdoor area onbare ground; store fuel in a cool, dry, well

    3

ventilated place; and use an approved, marked container for all fuel purposes.Wipe up all fuel spills before starting saw.

S Move at least 10 feet (3 meters) from fuel-ing site before starting engine.

S Turn the engine off and let saw cool in anon-combustible area, not on dry leaves, straw, paper, etc. Slowly remove fuel capand refuel unit.

S Store the unit and fuel in an area wherefuel vapors cannot reach sparks or openflames from water heaters, electric motorsor switches, furnaces, etc.

    KICKBACKWARNING: Kickback can occur when

the moving chain contacts an object at theupper portion of the tip of the guide bar orwhen the wood closes in and pinches thesaw chain in the cut. Contact at the upperportion of the tip of the guide bar can causethe chain to dig into the object, which stopsthe chain for an instant. The result is a light-ning fast, reverse reaction which kicks theguide bar up and back toward the operator. If the saw chain is pinched along the top ofthe guide bar, the guide bar can be drivenrapidly back toward the operator. Either ofthese reactions can cause loss of saw con-trol which can result in serious injury. Guardagainst kickback

Rotational Kickback is the rapid upwardand backward motion of the chain saw thatcan occur when the moving saw chain nearthe upper portion of the tip of the guide bar

contacts an object such as a log or abranch.

Pinch-Kickback and Pull-In occur when thechain is suddenly stopped by beingpinched, caught, or by contacting a foreignobject inthe wood. This sudden stopping ofthe chain results in a reversal of the chainforce used to cut wood and causes the sawto move in the opposite direction of thechain rotation. Pinch-Kickback drives thesaw straight back toward the operator. Pull-In pulls the saw away from the operator. Ei-ther reaction can result in loss of control andserious injury.

Avoid Pinch---Kickback:S Be extremely aware of situations or ob-

structions that can cause material topinch the top of or otherwise stop thechain.

S Do not cut more than one log at a time.S Do not twist the saw as the bar is with-

drawn from an undercut when bucking.

Avoid Pull---In:S Always begin cutting with engine at full

speed and saw housing against wood.S Use wedges made of plastic or wood.

Never use metal to hold the cut open.

    Kickback Path

Clear the work area; avoid obstructions.

REDUCE THE CHANCE OFKICKBACKS Recognize that kickback can happen.

With a basic understanding of kickback, you can reduce the element of surprisewhich contributes to accidents.

S Never let the moving chain contact anyobject at the tip of the guide bar.

S Keep the working area free from obstruc-tions such as other trees, branches, rocks, fences, stumps, etc. Eliminate oravoid any obstruction that your saw chaincould hit while you are cutting through aparticular log or branch.

S Keep your saw chain sharp and properlytensioned. A loose or dull chain can in-crease the chance of kickback occurring.Follow manufacturers chain sharpeningand maintenance instructions. Checktension at regular intervals with the en-gine stopped, never with engine running.Make sure the bar clamp nuts are secure-ly tightened after tensioning the chain.

S Begin and continue cutting at full speed.Ifchain is moving ata slower speed, there is

greater chance of kickback occurring.S Cut one log at a time.S Use extreme caution when re-entering a

previous cut.S Do not attempt cuts starting with the tip of

the bar (plunge cuts).S Watch for shifting logs or other forces that

could close a cutand pinch orfall into chain.S Use Reduced-Kickback Guide Bar and

    Low-Kickback Chain specified for yoursaw.

MAINTAIN CONTROLS Keep a good, firm grip on the saw with both

hands when the engine is running anddont let go. A firm grip will help you reducekickback and maintain control of the saw.Keep the fingers of your left hand encirclingand your left thumb under the front handle-bar. Keep your right hand completelyaround the rear handle whether your areright handed or left handed. Keep your leftarm straight with the elbow locked.

S Position your left hand on the front han-dlebar so it is in a straight line with yourright hand on the rear handle when mak-ing bucking cuts. Never reverse right andleft hand positions for any type of cutting.

    Never reversehand positions

Stand to the left ofthe saw

S Stand with your weight evenly balancedon both feet.

S Stand slightly to the left side of the saw tokeep your body from being in a direct linewith the cutting chain.

S Do not overreach. You could be drawn orthrown off balance and lose control of saw.

S Do not cut above shoulder height. It is dif-ficult to maintain control of saw aboveshoulder height.

KICKBACK SAFETY FEATURESWARNING: The following features areincluded on your saw to help reduce thehazard of kickback; however, such featureswill not totally eliminate this dangerous reac-tion. As a chain saw user, donot rely only on

safety devices. You must follow all safetyprecautions, instructions, and maintenancein this manual to help avoid kickback andother forces which can result in seriousinjury.S Reduced-Kickback Guide Bar, designed

with a small radius tip which reduces thesize of the kickback danger zone on bartip. A Reduced-Kickback Guide Bar hasbeen demonstrated to significantly re-duce the number and seriousness of kick-backs when tested in accordance withsafety requirements for gasoline poweredchain saws as set by ANSI B175.1.

S An adjusting pin and screw is used to ad-just the tension of the chain. It is very im-portant when assembling the bar, that thepin located on the adjusting screw alignsinto a hole in the bar.

    AdjustmentScrew

S Turn the adjusting screw counterclock-wise to move the adjusting pin almost asfar as it will go to the rear. This should al-low the pin to be near the correct position.Further adjustment may be necessary asyou mount the bar.

S Mount the bar as illustrated.

S Slide the bartoward the rear of the saw asfar as possible.

S Prepare the chain by checking theproperdirection. Without following the illustrationit is easy to place the chain onthe saw thewrong direction. Use the illustration of thechain to determine the proper direction.

    Proper chain direction

    Tip of Bar

S Place the chain onto the sprocket locatedbehind the clutch drum. Fit the chain be-tween the teeth in the sprocket.

S Start at the top of the bar and fit chain intogroove around the guide bar.

S After chain is installed, pull bar forwarduntil chain is snug in the groove of thebar.

S Hold guide bar against the saw framemaking sure the adjusting pin is alignedwith the hole in the bar. Remember thispin moves the bar forward and backwardas screw is turned. Install the bar clamp.

S Replace the bar clamp nuts and tightenfinger tight. Once the chain is tensionedyou will need to tighten bar clamp nuts.

CHAIN TENSION (Including units withchain already installed)

NOTE: When adjusting chain tension, make sure the bar nuts are finger tight only. Attempting to tension the chain when the

bar nuts are tight can cause damage.Checking the tension:Use the screwdriver end of the combinationscrewdriver/wrench tool to move the chainaroundthe bar. If thechaindoes notrotate, itis too tight. If too loose, thechainwill sagbe-low the bar.

    FUELING & LUBRICATION

FUELING ENGINEThis engine is certified to operate onunleaded gasoline. Before operation, gasoline must be mixed with a good quality2-cycle air-cooled engine oil. Werecommend Poulan/Weed Eater brand oil. Ifyou do not use this oil, use a good quality2-cycle air-cooled oil designed to be mixed ata ratio of 40:1 (A 40:1 ratio is obtained bymixing 3.2 onces of oil with 1 gallon ofunleaded gasoline). When mixing fuel followthe instructions printed on the container. Always read and follow the safety rules

relating to fuel before fueling your unit.BAR AND CHAIN LUBRICATIONThe bar and chain require continuous lu-brication. Lubrication is provided by the au-tomatic oilersystem when theoil tank is keptfilled. Lack of oil will quickly ruin the barandchain. Too little oil will cause overheatingshown by smoke coming from the chainand/or discoloration of the bar.

In freezing weather oil will thicken, making itnecessary to thin bar and chain oil with asmall amount (5to 10%) of #1 Diesel Fuel orkerosene. Bar and chain oil must be freeflowing for the oil system to pump enoughoil for adequate lubrication.

Genuine POULAN or POULAN PRO bar andchain oil is recommended to protect yourunit against excessive wear from heat andfriction. POULAN or POULAN PRO oil resistshigh temperature thinning. If POULAN orPOULAN PRO bar and chain oil is notavailable, use a good grade SAE 30 oil.S Never use waste oil for bar and chain lu-

brication.S Always stop the engine before removing

    the oil cap.

S Pull the starter rope quickly with your righthand until the engine starts.

S Above 40 degrees, allow the engine torun for approximately five seconds, thenpush the choke knob to the off position. Then, squeeze and release the throttletrigger to release the fastidle, allowing theengine to idle.

S Below 40 degrees, allow the engine towarm up 30 seconds to oneminute at halfchoke. Push choke knob to the off posi-tion; Then, squeeze and release thethrottle trigger to allow engine to idle.

For a warm engine:S Move on/stop switch to the ON position.S Press the throttle lockout with your right

hand. Squeeze and hold the throttle trig-ger; Press and hold the fast idle lock withyour forefinger; release the throttle trig-ger.

S Be sure choke is in the OFF position.S Pull the starter handle until engine starts.S Squeeze and release the throttle trigger to

allow engine to idle.Difficult starting or flooded engine:

The engine may be flooded with too muchfuel if it has not started after 10 pulls.

Flooded engines can be cleared of excessfuel by following the warm engine startingprocedure listed above. Insure the ignitionswitch is in the ON or START position.

Starting could require pulling the starterrope handle many times depending on howbadly the unit is flooded. If engine fails tostart refer to the troubleshooting chart or callyour Authorized Service Dealer.

    CUTTING METHODS

IMPORTANT POINTSS Cut wood only. Do not cut metal, plastics,

    masonry, non-wood building materials, etc.

S Stop the saw if the chain strikes a foreignobject. Inspect the saw and repair partsas necessary.

S Keep the chain out of dirt and sand. Even asmall amount of dirt will quickly dull a chainand increase the possibility of kickback.

S Practice cutting a few small logs using thefollowing techniques to get the feel ofusing your saw before you begin a majorsawing operation.

S Squeeze the throttle trigger and allow theengine to reach full speed before cutting.

S Begin cutting with the saw frame againstthe log.

S Keep the engine at full speed the entiretime you are cutting.

S Allow the chain to cut for you. Exert onlylight downward pressure.

S Release the throttle trigger as soon as thecut is completed, allowing the engine toidle. If you run the saw at full throttle with-out a cutting load, unnecessary wear canoccur.

S To avoid losing control when cut is com-plete, do not put pressure on saw at endof cut.

S Stop the engine before setting the sawdown.

TREE FELLING TECHNIQUESWARNING: Do not cut near buildings orelectrical wires if you do not know the direc-tion of tree fall, at night since you will not beableto see well, or duringbad weather suchas rain, snow, or strong winds. as fall is un-

predictable.Carefully plan your sawing operation in ad-vance. You need a clear area all around thetree so you can have secure footing. Checkfor broken or dead branches which can fallon you causing serious injury.

Natural conditions that can cause a tree tofall in a particular direction include:S The wind direction and speed.S The lean of the tree. The lean of a tree

might not be apparent due to uneven orsloping terrain.Use a plumb orlevel tode-termine the direction of tree lean.

S Weight and branches on one side.S Surrounding trees and obstacles.Look for decay and rot. If the trunk is rotted,it can snap and fall toward the operator.

Make sure thereis enough room forthe tree tofall. Maintain a distance of 2-1/2 tree lengthsfrom the nearest person or other objects. En-gine noise can drown out a warning call.

Remove dirt, stones, loose bark, nails, sta-ples, and wire from the tree where cuts areto be made.

FELLING LARGE TREES(6 inches in diameter or larger)

The notch method is used to fell large trees.A notch is cut on the side of the tree in thedesired direction of fall. After a felling cut ismade on the opposite side of tree, the treewill tend to fall into the notch.

NOTCH CUT AND FELLING THE TREES Make notch cut by cutting the top of the

notch first. Cut through 1/3 of thediameterof the tree. Next complete the notch bycutting the bottom of the notch. See il-lustration. Once the notch is cut removethe notch of wood from the tree.

S After removing the cutout of wood, makethe felling cut on the opposite side of thenotch. This is done bymaking a cut abouttwo inches higher than the center of thenotch. This will leave enough uncut woodbetween the felling cut and the notch toform a hinge. This hinge will help preventthe tree fromfalling in the wrong direction.

Hinge holds tree on stump and helpscontrol fall

NOTE: Before felling cut is complete, usewedges to open the cut when necessary tocontrol the direction of fall. Use wood or

plastic wedges, but never steel or iron, toavoid kickback and chain damage.S Be alert to signs that the tree is ready to

fall: cracking sounds, widening of the fell-ing cut, or movement in the upperbranches.

S As tree starts to fall, stop saw, put it down, and get awayquickly on your planned re-treat path.

S Be extremely cautious with partially fallentrees that may be poorly supported. When a tree doesnt fall completely, setthe saw aside and pull down the tree witha cable winch, block and tackle, or tractor. To avoid injury, do notcut down a partiallyfallen tree with your saw.

    CUTTING A FALLEN TREE(BUCKING)

Bucking is the term used for cutting a fall-en tree to the desired log length.

WARNING: Do not stand on the log be-ing cut. Any portion can roll causing loss offooting and control. Do not stand downhillof the log being cut.

Important pointsS Cut only one log at a time.S Cut shattered wood very carefully; sharp

pieces of wood could be flung toward op-erator.

S Use a sawhorse to cut small logs. Never

allow another person to hold the log whilecutting and never hold the log with yourleg or foot.

S Do not cut in an area where logs, limbs, androots are tangled. Drag thelogs into aclear areabefore cutting by pulling out ex-posed and cleared logs first.

TYPES OF CUTTING USEDFOR BUCKINGWARNING: If saw becomes pinched orhung in a log, dont try to force it out. Youcan lose control of the saw resulting in injuryand/or damage to the saw. Stop the saw, drive a wedge of plastic or wood into the cutuntil the saw can be removed easily. Restartthe saw andcarefully reenter the cut. Do notattempt to restart your saw when it ispinched or hung in a log.

Overcutting begins on the top side of thelog with thesaw against the log. When over-cutting use light downward pressure.

    OvercuttingUndercutting

Undercutting involves cutting on the un-derside ofthe log withtop ofsaw against thelog. When undercutting use light upwardpressure. Hold saw firmly and maintain con-trol. The saw will tend to push back towardyou.

WARNING: Never turn saw upsidedown to undercut. The saw cannot be con-trolled in this position.

LIMBING AND PRUNINGWARNING: Never climb into a tree tolimbor prune. Do not stand on ladders, platforms,a log, or in any position which can cause youto lose your balance or control of the saw.

IMPORTANT POINTSS Watch out for springpoles. Use extreme

caution when cutting small size limbs. Slen-der material may catch saw chain and bewhipped toward youor pull youoff balance.

S Be alert for springback. Watch out forbranches that are bent or underpressure.Avoid being struck by the branch or the

saw when the tension in thewood fibers isreleased.

S Frequently clear branches out of the wayto avoid tripping over them.

LIMBINGS Always limb a treeafter it iscut down. Only

then can limbing be done safely andproperly.

S Leave the larger limbs underneath thefelled tree to support the tree as you work.

S Start atbase of the felled tree and work to-ward the top, cutting branches and limbs.Remove small limbs with one cut.

S Keep the tree between you and the chainas much as possible.

S Remove larger, supporting branches withthe 1/3, 2/3 cutting techniques describedin the bucking section.

S Always use an overcut to cut small andfreely hanging limbs. Undercutting couldcause limbs to fall and pinch saw.
