Ladies golf – Posture-PerfectAn easy exercise for learning the correct body movement

LeeHarringtonAs a golf professional involved in introducing a lot of beginner ladies to the game, I often get asked how a female’s golf swing differs from a male’s.

The main differences are built around our body shape differences plus also the different body movement patterns developed through the different sports we play in our younger years. Boys tend to play cricket, rugby and soccer. Girls tend to play netball, hockey and tennis.

Women tend to carry more weight in the hip area, and a bend from the hips can feel unnatural. The set-up position comes more naturally to men as they create a similar position to, say, fielding

in cricket, rotating in rugby or setting up as a soccer goal keeper.

When you create correct posture from set-up this allows a proper rotational motion in your swing, leading to better balance, weight shift and body turn.

Most players I see place the club on their shoulders and rotate back and forth standing totally upright.

Grab a golf club and place it on your shoulders. Make sure you start this movement from a squat position mimicking the golf swing (as shown in photos) – not from a tall, straight position. Keep your spine in a straight position with your head up. This initial squat and turn can be practiced to feel the proper bend from the hips, not waist, for the golf swing.

On following through, also copy your swing motion and rotate, finishing with all weight on your

front foot (as shown in the final photo). Don’t stay flat-footed on the follow through.

This replicates your exact body motion required for a golf swing and can be practiced at home when you cannot get to a range to hit balls. This correct squat and rotation can generate more power and consistency through better balance.

This movement can assist both men and women. To pinpoint your exact swing faults it is always advisable to consult your local PGA professional.
