Following several com-plaints of illegal plasticrecycling units in

Shastripuram, the GHMC onceagain is in demolition mode. The officials, who will be visit-ing the area, will be flatteninganother 30 industrial units inthe area today. However, theresidents demand completerelocation of these units.

According to health officials, the unlicensed units in the vicin-ity of Shastripuram would beknocked down in the latestdrive. “We shall be demolishingabout 30 structures as part ofthis,” said additional commis-sioner (health) Vandana Kumar.

The official, who acknowl-edged the increase in the inci-dence of diseases like cancer inthe area, said the GHMC haddemolished some 30 units earli-er this year. But the residentsconsider the latest drive to be aneye wash, as several of theseplastic recycling units continueto work illegally. “Earlier, theyhad demolished some, but whatis the use as several of these still continue to work from thesame sites,” points out MAH

Asif, a resident. As per the analysis report by

the AP pollution control board, the water samples collected inand around ShastripuramColony contain high levels oftoxic chemicals. High levels ofchlorides, sulphates, fluorides, nitrates and other chemicalswere found. Total dissolvedsolids were between 1,973 and

2,801 mg per litre from samplestaken from five places. Totalalkalinity was between around400 mg per litre on an averageand hardness on an average of1,000 mg per litre.

For the residents whose kinhave been diagnosed with can-cer, living in the area is becomingdifficult. “Inspite of the hardfacts in front of them, the GHMC

is not taking tough action againstthe units,” laments Isa, a residentwhose close relative was the lat-est victim.

It is believed that authoritiesare reluctant to take action as thelocal leadership is in collusionwith the recycling units. However, the local corporatorpoints out to legal aspects thatslow down serious action.

‘Relocate recycling units’While the GHMC is demolishing illegal plastic recycling factories inShastripuram, residents demand that these units be relocated.

As though it portends the badtime ahead for the party, the

Telugu Desam Party’s official web-site went off air today.

The Telugu Desam Party’s web-site is the most vibrant one, in fact, the only website of a political partythat runs well. None of the otherpolitical parties including the rulingCongress has a comprehensiveonline party organ.

The TDP website gives officialstance on many things and alsoabout the padayatra the Oppositionleader Chandrababu Naidu hasundertaken.

More importantly, it allowsonline party membership. Whencontacted the IT manager of theTelugu Desam Party websiteSudhakar told Postnoon that theteam was trying to figure out whatthe problem was. “It showsdatabase error,” he said.

However, some party func-tionaries whisper that the rivals’could be responsible for torpedoingthe Telugu Desam Party website.

Another round of by-elections seems to beshaping up in AndhraPradesh in the wake

of fresh political developments. The State already has paid thebills for 65 by-elections in thepast six years according toSpeaker N Manohar.

The exodus of MLAs fromthe ruling Congress and themain Opposition Telugu DesamParties is the reason. In the last72 hours alone, two TDP MLAs— K Hareeswar Reddy fromParigi Assembly seat, A PraveenKumar Reddy fromTamballapalle Assembly, and MRajesh Kumar, Congress MLAfrom Chintalapudi seat haveannounced that their resigna-tion from their parent parties.

While Hareeswar Reddywas forced to leave the TDP

because of its confusing standon a separate Telangana,Praveen Kumar Reddy decidedto quit the Telugu Desam fol-lowing cropping up of differ-ences with party leadership.

Congress MLA Rajesh Kumarquit the party as he was report-edly peeved at the behaviour ofCM Kiran Kumar Reddy.

Apart from these two TDPMLAs, around six more MLAs

from TDP and four MLAs fromCongress Party are planning toleave their parties to join theYSR Congress and other politi-cal parties after tendering theirresignation for their MLAsposts.

If these MLAS resign fromtheir posts the State will face byelections in at least 11 Assemblyconstituencies.

These eleven assembly seatsare located in all the threeregions — Telangana, Andhraand Rayalaseema — of the State.Political analysts in the statestrongly feel that it is inevitablefor the ruling congress party toavoid these elections.

However, Congress leadersare not worried about facinganother round of by elections.“As a responsible government,we will face the by-electionswhenever they are held,”APCC official spokesperson NTulasi Reddy told Postnoon.

Another bout of bypolls in the offing?

AP faces the peculiar situation where the public exchequer is frequentlycalled upon to spend on bypolls on the whims of vexed political parties.

POSTNOON [email protected]

Landmark building ener-gy efficiency standardsannounced on Tuesdayshows that prioritising

energy-efficient building con-struction in India’s boomingcities will help it meet its energyneeds, improve energy security, and propel India forward in theglobal clean energy race.

The State report compiledjointly by the Natural ResourcesDefense Council (NRDC) and theAdministrative Staff College ofIndia stresses that state govern-ments in India and other stake-holders must act quickly to real-ize dramatic cost savings andguarantee a sustainable futurefor India’s energy-stressed cities.By all indications, Hyderabadhas the potential to become thefirst city in the South to becomean energy smart city.

BUILD SMART“India needs to build smart fromthe start. Seventy per cent of thebuildings that will exist in Indiaby 2030 have yet to be built,”said Anjali Jaiswal, senior attor-ney and director of the Natural

Resources Defense Council’sIndia Initiative. “This presents atremendous opportunity — byincorporating energy-efficienttechnologies right now, fromenergy-efficient windows to bet-ter lighting, India can dramati-cally reduce its energy demandand bring billions in savings.”

The report, supported by theShakti Sustainable EnergyFoundation, comes at the heels ofa landmark announcement thatAP is aiming to adopt energyefficiency standards for build-ings by 2013. AP is on its way to

operationalising the NationalEnergy Conservation BuildingCode (ECBC), which will ensurebuildings meet minimum energyefficiency standards.

SET STANDARDSThe ECBC sets energy efficiencystandards for the most energy-intensive building features, cap-turing energy savings wherethey can be the greatest – thebuilding envelope (walls, roof, windows), lighting, HVAC sys-tem, and electrical system. APhas also constituted a high-pow-

ered steering committee andtechnical committee, chaired bymunicipal officials, to overseestate-wide code implementation. As a hub of high-tech, energy-intensive industries, the state’scapital city, will be better posi-tioned to meet growing energydemand as it expands with theseefficiency standards in place.

Prioritising energy-smartbuilding construction in AP andacross India will deliver dramat-ic savings, according to expertstudies. McKinsey & Companyestimates that unlocking energyefficiency in new building con-struction, as well as improvingappliance and industrial plants’efficiency, could deliver $42 bil-lion (`2 lakh crore) in annual sav-ings to India by 2020.

In addition to delivering sig-nificant long-term cost savings, increased energy efficiency inbuildings will also create posi-tive health impacts across India’surban areas. Currently, mostmodern buildings in Indian citiesare equipped with backup dieselgenerators for power duringdaily outages. Decreasingreliance on polluting diesel gen-erators will cut dangerous emis-sions in the air, improve the

health of urban residents, andhelp combat climate change.

Energy efficiency is alsoessential to moving India’s grow-ing clean energy market forward. With India already investingheavily in solar energy, the coun-try needs to accelerate actions onenergy efficiency to ensure Indiacontinues to attract innovatorsand investors in energy efficien-cy solutions.

“The actions we take to accel-erate the decline of the country’senergy intensity today will driveinnovation and ensure India’ssustainable development in thefuture,” said Minnie Mathew, chief secretary of AP, and AjayMathur, of India’s Bureau ofEnergy Efficiency, in the report.

RECOGNISING NEEDAs AP’s historic announcementindicates, government leadersand stakeholders are recognisingthe urgency of addressing India’senergy shortages. However, withhours of daily power outagesstill standard across India, moregovernment action is needed atthe state level to ensure India cancontinue to grow and urbanisewhile ensuring affordable andreliable energy access.

Energy smart State in the making?AP declares it aims to adopt energy efficiency standards by 2013 to become an energy smart state.

Costumes and candy –that’s the abiding imageof Halloween that wehave, an image drawn

from the many American moviesand TV shows celebrating theholiday. But the roots ofHalloween come from a moremystical and spiritual ideology. In an interview with Postnoon,Sangeeta Krishnan, HighPriestess of Maya WiccanTradition in Mumbai, talks about the realmeaning of the holi-day, witchcraft andmainstream religion. We all think ofHalloween as it is cele-brated in the US. Butwhat are it’s roots?Halloween, or as wecall it, Samhain, is anancient Celtic tradi-tion. It’s primarily acelebration of theturn of the seasons. We believethat there is a veil between thephysical and the non-physicalworld. On Samhain, the veilbecomes thin and the spirits arecloser to the living world.

When Christianity took over(as a major religion), they neededto garner support from paganreligions. What they did wascarry forward all the traditionsassociated with Samhain andgave it a Christian name. Thechurch designated November 1as All Saints’ Day, which is pre-ceded by All Hallows’ Eve, orHalloween.

Even all the traditions yousee today are reflections of theCeltic ones. For example, thecarving of the pumpkins. We puta candle in the hollowed-outpumpkin to show the way forour ancestors. The traditionremains to date. You recently held a Dumb Supperin connection with Samhain. What was the reason? The supper was held to honourthe spirits and to communicatewith them. We have deep rever-ence for our ancestors, because

without them, wewouldn’t even behere. In the Hindu tra-dition, it is the equiva-lent of a shraad. Thesupper was held inthe reverse order, starting with dessertand ending withstarters. It was held insilence, so it was veryemotional andintense.

Apart from theparticipants, one place was laidout for the spirit. Everyone hadto write a letter to someone he orshe knew who is deceased. Atthe end of the event, we have asilent communion with the spir-its and then we burn the letters.Witchcraft is always a populartheme in movies and books. Dothey get their facts right?Well, media is entirely dramatic;you can’t expect them to be real-istic. But in the case of book, theystick to the fact that it is all fic-tion. They really do theirresearch. The philosophy is solid.Consider Harry Potter — the

premise is right and it is notentirely fake. Even pop culturebuys into the idea of witches –the pointy hats and the broom-sticks. But they all have basis inthe truth.Recently, three women in WestMidnapore were killed for being‘witches’. Is there a strong preju-dice against witchcraft in India? In rural areas, they tend to playon blind faith. In most cases, ithas more to do with hatred thanwitchcraft. If someone has a per-sonal vendetta against thewoman, they accuse her of hav-ing the evil eye and doing

witchcraft. In metros, people aremore open to the idea. In the 12-15 years that I have been a prac-tising Wiccan, things havechanged. I don’t have to worryabout what people will think. There are people who have mis-conceptions and are notinformed, but that can bechanged. Many people are turning awayfrom religion these days. But thepopularity of Wicca seems to beon the rise. What could be the rea-son behind this phenomenon?Wicca is more of a way of lifethan a religion. Most religions go

by a book and this means that itcomes with a shelf life. Thingstend to become obsolete if youonly go by the book. The thingsyour parents do don’t makesense to you. Though Wicca isrecognised as a religion in the USand some other places, it doesn’tgo by the book. Instead, it fol-lows the Wiccan Rede — An itharm none do what ye will. Wicca isnot about imposing too manyrules. It is more about practisinga path connected to nature. Thisappeals to a lot of youngsters. They don’t want to be a part of aflawed, sexist ideology, whichmay not necessarily have beenpart of religion initially. Theydon’t want to be blind followers.

With greater exposure, youngsters are encouraged tothink. They start questioning theflawed aspects of religion andwondering why they follow it.My parents were raised Hindu. As I grew older, I discoveredmany inconsistencies and ques-tioned them. My parents told me,‘We didn’t ask these questions,so we don’t have the answers’. Inmy quest, I discovered Wiccaand really appreciated the free-dom it offered. What can people do thisHalloween, if they want to cele-brate it as it originally was?Carving a pumpkin and lightinga candle in it is a classic way. Italso falls in line with theAmerican tradition.

You can also leave out offer-ings for the spirits. Also, since itis the time when spirits are close, communicate with people youloved who have passed on.

‘Wicca is more of a way of life’Sangeeta Krishnan, high priestess of Maya Wiccan tradition, talks about celebrating

Halloween in its true sense and debunks myths about witchcraft.

Thanks to the tax benefitsthere has been a growingdemand for office space inthe City of late. And IT com-

panies are making a beeline for SEZspace as it helps reduce operationalcosts by nearly 18 to 20 per centwhen compared to normal officespace. Even the rents for both SEZand non-SEZ spaces are similar, unlike most other major cities in thecountry.

“As STPI tax breaks have cometo an end, IT companies are prefer-ring SEZs to get tax benefits. However, there is no supply of SEZspace for the next seven to eightmonths in IT hubs like HiTec Cityand Gachibowli.

“The companies either need to

wait for another eight to twelvemonths to occupy the space or haveto choose a non-SEZ space,” saidSandip Patnaik, national directorhead AP, Jones Lang LaSalle.

Talking about major SEZs in theCity, he said, “SEZs have largespaces, which are developed phaseby phase. Some of the major SEZsare Raheja, Phoenix and DivyaSreein the HiTec City area. DLF, TishmanSpeyer (US-based builder) andupcoming Lanco are located inGachibowli. In the east, there is theNSL SEZ in Uppal, RahejaPocharam (9 km away from Uppal) .There are a few SEZs in the South,(close to Shamshabad) but compa-nies don’t prefer these.”

Talking about retail spaceabsorption, he said, “There is nomall retail space available in theCity. Most of the malls are available

during the end of 2013 and in 2014.The scarcity of mall spaces will con-tinue and retailers will struggle toget quality space in malls until then.

“However, on high streets, retailers prefer the ground floor. Attimes, they can go up to the secondfloor to set up shops. But they arenot keen to absorb retail spacebeyond the second floor, as cus-tomers tend to stick to the lowerfloors for shopping. This is leadingto lesser rents for spaces that areabove the second floor. There arevacant spaces on these floors insome of the high streets,” he said.

Talking about festive season, hesaid, “Residential buyers considerthis an auspicious time to buy newflats. However, retailers absorbspace much in advance to get theirshops ready for the festive season toget maximum sales.”

BERLIN: German Chancellor AngelaMerkel and the heads of five globalfinancial organisations Tuesdaystressed the need for reforms to boostconfidence and growth in an uncer-tain economic climate.

Noting that global economicrecovery was on “a fragile track”,they called for action on fiscal con-solidation “at an appropriatepace”together with structuralreforms, in a joint statement.

“The world economic risks arevery evident,” Merkel told a jointpress conference with the interna-tional delegation which included theheads of the IMF and World Bank.

“Economic growth prospects are

not as good as we would wish,” sheadded. After Greek Prime MinisterAntonis Samaras earlier announcedthat his country had reached agree-ment with its international credi-tors, of which the IMF is one, on a

new wave of austerity measuresnecessary to unlock new bailoutloans, Merkel said Greece had notbeen specifically discussed.

She said that growth and debtreduction in general had been on theagenda. IMF chief Christine Lagardesaid that advanced economies need-ed a partnership with monetaryauthorities and governments as wellas structural reforms amid “a labori-ous recovery”.

As well as Lagarde, World Bankchief Jim Yong Kim, World TradeOrganisation head Pascal Lamy,International Labour OrganisationSecretary General Guy Ryder and theOECD's Angel Gurria took part. AFP

In a busy sculpture work-shop in west India, there isone unfamiliar face along-side the images of divinefigures such as Jesus, the

Virgin Mary and Hindu goddessParvati.

This is Ivy, the late belovedwife of 82-year-old Peter Pereira, and she is being commemoratedin a life-size bust. The fibreglassfigure is the latest example of agrowing trend: commissioningmemorial sculptures of the dead.

For when a photograph is notenough, the Sequeiras — a third-generation family of religiouseffigy makers — operate a suc-cessful sideline to bereaved rela-tives who want a three-dimen-sional tribute to their lost lovedones.

Using old photographs tocapture a likeness, the statuesand busts are made of wood orfibreglass, coloured with paintand completed with realisticglass eyes. In Ivy’s case, theyplan to finish the look with spectacles.

“I will feel she is still herebecause of the statue,” said bereftPereira, a retired cinematogra-pher who will keep the bust inhis Mumbai apartment toremember Ivy, who died aged 77almost four years ago. “Somepeople don’t like to rememberpeople who have died and gone, but not me,” said the widower. He has even commissioned a sec-ond marble-effect bust, for thegarden of another family home.

The Sequeira business isbased north of Mumbai in SmallGiriz village, nestled in thecoconut trees and banana planta-tions of Vasai, once a strongholdof Portuguese colonials whobrought with them Catholicismand carpentry skills.

The family name itself echoesthe Portuguese connection, andBenzoni Sequeira says that it washis grandfather who started thereligious woodcarving businessin 1920.

After several decades of pro-ducing altars and effigies, theycompleted their first personalmemorial about 20 years ago,and demand has surged in recenttimes.

“It was one or two orders, butnow it’s continuous,” Benzonitold AFP.

The Sequeiras’ work drawscomparisons to the MadameTussauds waxwork museum inLondon, but Benzoni believes he

has a far more difficult challengein creating a convincing lookalike.

“They get all the pho-tographs they need from everyangle, they get all the measure-ments they need,” he said.“Normally our clients provideonly an old black and white pho-tograph. There’s a lot of trial anderror.”

Relatives of the late AndrewMachado, a dairy farmer, com-missioned the Sequeiras to com-plete a full-length statue thatnow stands proudly at theentrance to his family home inVasai.

The figure has garlandsaround his neck and is wearing adistinctive outfit of just shortsand a simple shirt. “We didn’twant any drapery, it’s just likethe clothes he would wear. Wewanted it to feel like real-life,”said his 75-year-old widowSantan.

The process begins with aclay modelling, checked several

times by a family member toensure the likeness.

It is then recreated in wood, costing `85,000 rupees for a bust,or in fibreglass for a cheaper`50,000.

“We have to have a lot ofpatience. It’s not a fast-pacedjob,” said Benzoni’s older broth-er Mingleshwar in their work-shop, where body parts liearound like the limbs of giantdolls.

The brothers have carvedwood since they were youngsters, learning from their father Renoldand uncle Roque, a mustachioed71-year-old who still sits carvingon the porch steps despite the loss

of sight in one eye.Renold, 68, also remains an

active woodworker and a keenamateur astronomer, especiallyproud of his self-made celestialglobe that shows the position ofconstellations in the sky.

Building a good local reputa-tion, the Sequeiras don’t adver-tise: word-of-mouth has helpedtheir commissions to increaseboth at home and abroad.

In their house sit two dozencrucifixes, with flashing redbulbs depicting dripping blood, which are destined for theMiddle East.

A full-size sari-clad womanin the hallway is to be shipped toan Indian-run hotel in Britain.

The family’s gilding workhas also won them accolades:their painstaking restoration ofMumbai’s 140-year-old Dr BhauDaji Lad Museum helped it win aUNESCO Asia-Pacific Award in2005 for cultural heritage conser-vation.

“Our work is very special.

We’re very satisfied at the end ofthe day,” said Benzoni.

The business came fromhumble beginnings. In theirgrandfather Michael’s youth, thelocal church was so poor that ithad to borrow statues of Jesusand Mary from another parishon Good Friday.

The Easter service was heldearly in order to return the effi-gies to the lending church for thefeast day — a situation thatspurred Michael to start makinghis own religious figures.

“He did the face of Jesus, it’sstill in the church. Then slowlyhe did other statues and altars,”said Mingleshwar.

The Sequeiras say they haveplanned for years to make theirown sculptural memorial toMichael, the founder of the fami-ly business, but they are alwaystoo busy doing client work.

“We have a saying: a carpen-ter doesn’t have a bench in hishouse,” said Benzoni with alaugh. AFP

Sculptors switch to mortalsThe Sequeira business is based north of Mumbai in Small Giriz village, once a stronghold of Portuguese

colonials who brought with them Catholicism and carpentry skills.

The Sequeiras don’tadvertise: word-of-mouth has helpedtheir commissions toincrease both at homeand abroad.

NEWS BRIEFS

BEIJING: UN-Arab Leaguepeace envoy Lakhdar Brahimisaid Wednesday he hopedChina would play an active rolein helping end the violence inSyria as he met Chinese ForeignMinister Yang Jiechi for talks inBeijing.

Greeting Yang at the foreignministry in front of reporters,Brahimi said he hoped “Chinacan play an active role in solv-ing the events in Syria” withoutelaborating further.

China is generally suspi-cious of intervention in theinternal affairs of other nations.

Both China and Russia haveexercised their veto in the UNSecurity Council to block reso-lutions aimed at putting morepressure on Syrian PresidentBashar al-Assad.

Meeting him on the sidelinesof the UN General Assembly inNew York last month, Yang reaf-firmed this stance, saying that“political dialogue is the onlycorrect way to tackle this issue”.

Any political transition mustbe led by the people of Syria andnot imposed by outside forces,he said.

Yang thanked Brahimi forhis work on Wednesday and

said he hoped their discussions-- their third in two months --would promote “mutual under-standing” and “the appropriatehandling of the Syrian issue”.

Yang also met the Syrian

president’s envoy in Augustand an opposition delegationthe next month, both timesstressing the need for dialogue, the foreign ministry said on itswebsite.

He warned the oppositionabout outside forces directingany political transition, while hetold the president’s envoy thatboth sides in the conflict shouldwork with international media-tion efforts.

Analysts say China’s hesi-tance to back further action inSyria may stem from its discom-fort with Western-led militaryintervention after last year’suprising in Libya, which even-tually led to the fall of leaderMoamer Kadhafi.

China opposed militaryaction in Libya but did not vetoa March 2011 Security Councilresolution authorising the oper-ation, yet believes the West mis-interpreted the resolution andwent too far.

PARIS: French tax authoritieshave made a billion-euro ($1.3billion) claim against Google topressure the US Internet giantto compromise in a dispute overcompensation to media web-sites, a French newspaperreported.

The weekly CanardEnchaine said in its edition tohit newstands today that the taxclaim concerns the transferprices set between Google’sIrish holding company and the

US ELECTIONS

CommentWEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 31, 2012

14HIGH-FLYING THOUGHTSWell, well, well! India Against Corruption activist Arvind Kejriwal says hehas a bigger surprise for us, promising us a bigger expose. What can itbe? Who’s the protagonist, or the antagonist? From which party or institu-tion is he or she? Beats all!

US President BarackObama no longerinspires the enthu-siasm he once didbut Europe still

favours him, doubtful ofRepublican challenger MittRomney even if his electionwould spell no fundamentalchange in ties with Washington.

With the race for the WhiteHouse neck-and-neck, polls inEurope give Obama a massivelead — 75 percent to just 8.0 per-cent for Romney according tothe latest survey by the GermanMarshall Fund.

The president’s personalapproval rating in Europestands at 71 percent, down 12percentage points but stillremarkable after four yearsmarked by the worst economicdownturn since the ‘GreatDepression’ of the 1930s.

Barring a major internation-al crisis, US elections turn on theeconomy.

But in Europe, Obama iscredited with the withdrawal ofUS troops from Iraq and thereform of healthcare, though thestalemate in the Israel-Palestineconflict and failure to close theGuantanamo detention centreare negatives.

Some other successes he canclaim, such as the trackingdown and killing of Osama binLaden, also play better to USaudiences than in Europe.

Failings aside, it remains afact that Obama “is the closestthing (in the United States) to aSocial-Democrat,” as known inEurope, said Jan Techau, head ofthe Carnegie Europe think-tank.

In contrast, Romney is large-ly an unknown quantity andwhat Europeans saw of himduring a tour in July failed toreassure that he would be a ‘safepair of hands.’

His background in businessas a financial wheeler dealerand his espousal of ultra-liberaleconomic policies would makehim an uneasy bedfellow formany Europeans who blame thebankers and financiers for the2008-09 global crash.

Additionally, he shares toomuch common ground with thefar-right conservatives ofGeorge W. Bush’s presidency, indelibly linked to the Iraq warand a blunt assertion of USpower which rattled the allies.

Ironically, for all the discus-sion and attention paid to theUS election in Europe, thereseems much less interest theother way, with foreign policy avery secondary issue in theNovember 6 vote.

Europe, when taken up, isdone so more to score politicalpoints—Romney dubbing

Obama as the man to lead theUnited States down the samepath as twice bailed-out Greece.

For some, this low profile iswelcome, keeping Europe out ofthe firing line despite the prob-lems caused by the sovereigndebt crisis.

The downside is thatWashington has made clear thatin reordering its priorities to‘pivot’ to the Asia-Pacific region,it “turns its back to Europe,”said Steven Blockmans, of theCentre for European PolicyStudies. “The two sides of theAtlantic are losing strategicinterest in each other and alsoincreasingly the capacity to dealwith each other, to care togetherfor the same things,” said UlrikeGuerot of the European Councilon Foreign Relations.

Other analysts suggestedthat the United States cannotsimply disregard events inEurope, if only for economicreasons -- the debt crisis has hitthe US economy and fixing theproblem has to be one of itsmajor concerns.

“Regardless of the outcomeof the presidential election, theeurozone crisis will be a sourceof major US concern,” ClaraMarina O’Donnell of the Centrefor European Reform at theBrookings Institution said in arecent article.

Obama and his officials haveidentified the debt crisis as“their biggest frustration withEurope. For them, EU institu-tions have shown themselvesincapable of addressing the cri-sis,” O’Donnell wrote.

Highly improper

“India’s new illustrious Muslim Foreign minister,’ screams Pakistan’s premier EnglishDaily Dawn. And, for once, nobody would be hastened to spray the Pak paper

with a communal colour of branding ministers as Muslim or Sikh or Parsi as the paperhas used the AFP report on Khurshid after interviewing him. It once again proves, if

proof is required, how the Western media communalise even governance. Nobody inIndia would brand Manmohan Singh as “a Sikh PM.” Nor would one call Narendra Modia “Bania chief minister.” This sort of journalist is repugnant. Scribes in their right minds

who believe in fair play and justice would never think of portraying a functionary of thegovernment based on his caste or religion. Will the same news agency have branded a

British prime minister a Protestant or Catholic or Methodist Prime Minister? Onedoubts. Whatever the excuse, nobody has the right to brand those leading the govern-

ment according to his caste or religion, as a government official is above these.

Not very like a gentleman

Now that’s very ungentlemanly, MrModi. You should not have resorted to

such uncouth comments. Yes, yes... Youmay have got carried away by the thou-sands at the rally at Himachal Pradesh thatyou were addressing, yet that’s no reasonto ask them, “Have you ever heard of `50crore girlfriend?” That is not very primeministerial, if you understand. Perhaps youshould also like to be abreast of news fromyour camp and the latest of what’s up withNitin Gadkari? Not very rosy, is it?

When 35-year-oldManish sufferedfrom an infection, his doctor pre-

scribed him a course of antibi-otics, that he religiously took. While the medication relievedhim of his infection, what it led towas a terrible spell of diarrhoea.

So much so that the

IT professional had to take offfrom work and was left feelingincredibly weak.

Surprised by this turn ofevents, Manish went back tocheck with his doctor the cause ofthis health issue. What had himstumped was the fact that he’dbeen extra careful to eat fresh,home-cooked meals and yet had

landed up with such a severebout of diarrhoea. Turnedout, the antibiotics he’d beentaking had washed out thenaturally occurring flora

from his digestive system, leading to him develop-

ing ClostridiumDifficile infection

or C.Diff. “C.Diff is a bacteria that is

normally present in the largeintestine, but is suppressed bythe good bacteria in the gut. However, in people who’ve beenusing antibiotics for a long timeor have been using them injudi-ciously, the bacteria in the gut getdestroyed, leading to the C.Diffgetting aggressive,” explains DrSundeep Lakhtakia, consultantgastroenterologist at the AsianInstitute of Gastroenterology.

SYMPTOMS“Symptoms of C.Diff is usuallydiarrhoea and in some people itcan be a severe form of it. Usuallyelderly people, young children orpeople who are immuno-compro-mised face a more a severe formof the infection,” says DrSundeep.

Even patients who have beenhospitalised are at risk

of developing

the infection due to ill main-tained bed pans or toilet seats. “Itis important for the health work-er to maintain good hygiene andwear gloves around the patient,”says Dr Sundeep.

He adds that doctors usuallydiagnose the infection based onthe symptoms or blood test.“With the blood test however, there is a high chance of falsepositive testing since the bacteriaanyway exists in the large intes-tine. Which is why we recom-mend a specialised stool test forbetter diagnosis. Unfortunately, since this test is not easily avail-able with most labs, most casesgo undiagnosed,” he says.

TREATMENT“There are antibiotics that dealwith this and a 10 day courseshould help. It is easy to treatC.Diff. In rare cases, frail elderlypeople who might succumb if itprogresses to become a toxicmega colon,” he says.

WASHINGTON: The dangersof smoking on users and theirchildren are known but newresearch demonstrates that it alsocan causes asthma in their grand-children.

Asthma is a major publichealth problem. It is the mostcommon chronic disease ofchildhood. While there are manyfactors which contribute to asth-ma - maternal smoking duringpregnancy is a well known, andavoidable, risk.

During pregnancy nicotinecan affect a developing foetus'lungs, predisposing the infant tochildhood asthma.

Researchers from Harbor-UCLA Medical Centre,California, tested the effect ofnicotine exposure during preg-nancy on rats, looking not only attheir pups but also at secondgeneration pups.

Exposure inside the uterusresulted in both male and femaleoffspring having reduced lungfunction consistent with asthma.

It also impaired lung func-tion of their own offspring, eventhough the first generation ratswere not themselves exposed tonicotine once they were born, according to an UCLA statement.

Levels of proteins increasedby maternal smoking in thelungs of their offspring such asfibronectin, collagen and nico-tinic aceylcholine receptors, werealso found to be raised in thegrandchildren.

RESEARCH

The newresearch addsto the debate

about the dan-gers of over-

diagnosis,which sees

women under-go invasive

treatment forcancers thatwould never

have madethem ill.

PARIS: The benefits of pre-emptive breast cancer screeningoutweigh the risks, a study saidon Tuesday, insisting the prac-tice saves thousands of lives.

The new research adds tothe debate about the dangers ofoverdiagnosis, which sees somewomen undergo invasive treat-ment for cancers that wouldnever have made them ill oreven been diagnosed were itnot for the scans.

"Breast screening extendslives," concluded a panel ofresearchers in The Lancet medi-cal journal.

The team had analysed datafrom other trials conductedover many years in Britain, where women aged 50 to 70 areinvited for a screening mammo-gram every three years.

The data, it said, pointed toa 20 percent reduction in mor-tality — or one death prevented

for every 180 women screened. This meant that the UK

screening programmes "proba-bly prevent about 1,300 breastcancer deaths every year," saidthe report.

But there is a cost. Nearly 20percent of breast cancer diag-nosed by screening wouldnever have caused any prob-lems, said the study.

The panel, set up to adviseBritish policymakers, estimatedthat among every 10,000women invited to screeningfrom the age of 50 in the Britain,681 cancers would be discov-ered, of which 129 would beoverdiagnoses, and 43 deathsprevented.

The report showed that "theUK breast-screening pro-gramme extends lives and that, overall, the benefits outweighthe harms," The Lancet wrote inan editorial.

"Women need to have fulland complete access to this lat-est evidence in order to makean informed choice about breastcancer screening."

The team conceded therewere limitations to its work, including that all the data scru-tinised was more than 20 yearsold. Cancer experts have beenat loggerheads for years aboutwhether the benefits of screen-ing outweigh the harm of over-diagnosis.

All cancer, once picked upin the screening process, istreated, often with surgery aswell as radio- and chemothera-py, as it is impossible to tellwhich growths would haveremained undetected for theremainder of a woman's life.

In August, medical expertsSteven Woloshin and LisaSchwartz wrote in the BritishMedical Journal (BMJ) that

screening only narrowlydecreased risks that a 50-year-old woman would die frombreast cancer within 10 years —from 0.53 per cent to 0.46 percent.

Up to half of womenscreened annually over 10 yearsexperienced at least one falsealarm that required a biopsy, they said.

And in 2010, a report in theNew England Journal ofMedicine said mammogramshave only a "modest" impact onreducing breast cancer deaths.

The latest panel had beencreated by the national cancerdirector for England, MikeRichards and Cancer ResearchUK chief executive officerHarpal Kumar.

Its work, said The Lancet,"should begin to lay the benefitsversus harm controversy torest". IANS

Debate on ‘health value’ of organic food continuesWASHINGTON: The debateover whether organic food isbetter and worth its higher pricekeeps raging on in the US.

The controversy was in thenews when researchers fromStanford University foundorganic foods no more nutritiousthan conventional products, though they have fewer pesti-cides. Researchers, who

reviewed 237 different studies, did not find organic meats werehealthier either. "When webegan this project, we thoughthat there would likely be somefindings that would support thesuperiority of organic over con-ventional food," said Dr DenaBravata of Stanford University.

Researchers said they foundconventional fruits and vegeta-

bles had more pesticide residuesthan their organic equivalentsbut that the pesticide levels werealmost always within the range.

In 2011, researchers atBritain's Newcastle Universityreached different conclusionswhen they did a meta-analysisof data from the studies.

Their research, found non-genetically modified and pesti-

cide-free fruits and vegetableshad better nutritional value.

The American Academy ofPediatrics announced that noscientific study had been provenorganic foods to be healthier. Itrecommended in a report thatchildren eat a wide variety offruits and vegetables — whetherthey are organic or not. "We donot want families to consume

smaller amounts of expensiveorganic foods and reduce theirintake of healthy foods," JanetSilverstein American Academyof Pediatrics said. "The Stanfordreport says organic food has 30per cent less pesticide and that iswhat consumers are concernedabout," Christine Bushway, headof the Organic Trade Associationsaid. IANS

PREVIOUS PUZZLE ANSWER

How to play kakuroKakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku insome ways. But is also suitably different. The keyquestion: “How do you play kakuro?”, well hereare the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakurogrid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It hasrows and columns, and dark cells like in a cross-word. And, just like in a crossword, some of thedark cells will contain numbers. Some cells willcontain two numbers.

However, in a crossword the numbersreference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are allyou get! They denote the total of the digits in therow or column referenced by the number.

Within each collection of cells — calleda run — any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be usedbut, like sudoku, each number may only be usedonce.

Let”s have an example to explain this conceptmore clearly:

In the image above, which shows a section ofa kakuro puzzle, you will see the numbers “26”and “14” in the top row. Look at the 14. Thismeans that the total of the three cells under-neath must sum to 14. Therefore 9, 4, 1 could bethe answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on...

So, how do you work out the actual combi-nation? Well, this is done through eliminationand cross-referencing. For instance, as you workout the answers for other kakuro clues, this willnaturally limit the valid combinations, and hencethe answer for this particular run.

Note the second cell in row two — it con-tains two numbers, 30 and 11. The 30 refers tothe vertical run underneath the number 30 andthe 11 refers to the two cells to the right, hori-zontally, of the number 11.

LOS ANGELES: Britain’s AmirKhan says it’s his head, not hisheart, that will put him back onthe path to boxing’s summitwhen he takes on unbeatenAmerican Carlos Molina inDecember.

“We know we have to winthe fight, not only win it but winit in good style,” Khan saidTuesday at the Los Angeles Spo -rts Arena, where he and Molinawill face off in a light welter-weight bout on December 15.

“I want to be back up there. Iwant a good win. I aim to winthis fight to be back where Iwant to be.”

Former world championKhan is coming off two succes-sive defeats, including a fourth-

round knockout loss to lightwelterweight world championDanny Garcia in July.

Khan has since sackedfamed trainer Freddie Roach, mentor of Filipino icon MannyPacquiao, and says that thanksto his preparations with VirgilHunter, fans will see “an AmirKhan who is smarter, an AmirKhan who is thinking abouteverything”.

That’s the prescription from

Hunter, who scoffed at thenotion that Garcia’s victoryindicated Khan had a suspectchin.

Hunter said it wasn’t Khan’sinability to take a punch, but hisinability to stick to his strategyafter a third-round knockdown, that cost him that fight.

“He has to temper hisapproach,” Hunter said. “He’s alittle ahead of himself, he has tolearn how to harness his speed.”

Khan, 26-3 with 18 knock-outs, admitted that the loss toGarcia -- coming after hedropped a controversial splitdecision to American LamontPeterson -- was especially bitter.

“I think I let him and hisfather get to me,” Khan said. “Ilost my cool. I could have justboxed him and I tried to get intoa fight with him and I got intohis game.”

Hunter, who trains unbeatensuper-middleweight worldchampion Andre Ward, hascounseled Khan that boxing isabout business, not revenge.

But Khan clearly has Garciain the back of his mind, sayingthat’s a rematch he’d like tomake before perhaps moving upfrom the 140-pound division.

First, however, comes the 17-0 Molina, who says he’s lookingforward to fighting in front ofhome fans in a venue that hashosted Olympic boxing as wellas three Muhammad Ali fights.

Khan says that his prepara-tions are progressing quietly inthe peace and quiet of Hunter’sOakland gym, which unlike theRoach’s Wild Card gym inHollywood, has none of thehubbub.

But Walcott’s goal momentsbefore half-time began a scarce-ly believable recovery beforethe England winger completedthe turnaround with the 11thgoal of a 12-goal thriller.

This will rank as one of themost memorable League Cupgames in the competition’s his-tory.

Few could have predictedthe scoreline, but Wenger willbe relieved to see his sideprogress as they look for theirfirst silverware since 2005.

Reading set the tone as theycame flying out of the blocksand were unfortunate to seeSean Morrison’s second-minuteheader bounce back off the post.

But Arsenal clearly had notheeded the warning as JasonRoberts’ opener sparked a

three-goal blitz in just 12 min-utes. Noel Hunt’s fine passfreed Hal Robson-Kanu and theWelshman’s cross was met byRoberts at the far post.

It was the least Readingdeserved and it would get evenworse for the Gunners just sixminutes later.

Garath McCleary’s cleverpass freed Chris Gunter and hislow cross was turned past hisown goalkeeper by Arsenal cen-tre-back Laurent Koscielny.
