A50-year-old farmer was elec-trocuted while he was talk-

ing over the phone that wasplugged in for charging at hisresidence at Annojiguda ofKandukur mandal on Tuesdaymorning. The victim, D Ramulu, was found unconscious withburnt fingers by his wife around6 am on Tuesday. She along withher neighbours rushed him to anearby hospital, where he waspronounced dead on arrival. Thepolice said that the mishapoccurred due to a short circuit.

This problem is not only seenin China-made mobile phonebut also in established brands. Some time back, Nokia hadrecalled its BL-5C series batteriesdue to technical difficulties. Dueto the device being in close prox-imity to the body, even a smallshort-circuit can cause death.

Safety Precautionsn Don’t use incompatible/unau-

thorised cell phone batteriesand chargers.

n Don’t tamper with the batteryor allow it to be punctured, crushed, or come into contactwith metal objects.

n Avoid damaging the phone bydropping it, keeping it where itcan become heated or wet.

n Follow instructions for batteryusage, storage, and charging.

“We are toldthat the twoh u n d i e smight have

contained at least Rs 20,000,”Neredment police inspector KVenkat Reddy said. In anotherincident that took place inMiyapur, burglars broke intothe Sai Baba temple and man-aged to steal nearly 30 kgs ofsilver articles worth Rs 15 lakh. Here too, burglars broke thelock and accessed the templepremises.

The police do not rule outinvolvement of professionalgroups, though nothing hasbeen confirmed yet. The tem-ples are left unguarded atnight, police said. The temple

trustees are reportedly plead-ing lack of finance for security.

Investigating officers toldPostnoon that one reason fornightly marauders zeroing in

on temples is probably thetightening of security at com-mercial spots. “With CCTVcameras in most commercialareas and metal detectors

becoming a norm, burglarsare being cautious as to wherethey strike next, Their safestplaces to strike are now placesof worship which have mini-mal security,” they say.

The Cyberabad police saythat though they have intensi-fied their night patrolling fol-lowing a series of house bur-glaries, these thugs study thepatrolling method and sneakin during the interval, it seems.

A detective sub-inspectorattached to the Cyberabadpolice told this paper that bur-glars are keeping an eagle eyeon the patrolling teams andthat is how they are able tostrike without being detectedor caught.

The Hair Care Man!Jawed Habib needs no introduction. This man glamorisedhairstyling. Today he has over 180 salons and over 50 academiesShiba Minai [email protected]

Jawed Jawed looks just like his postersdepict him. His healthy crop of hairand bewitching smile strike you

instantly.He is a man with a visionary

approach “Today, people know me, butduring my student years, I was clueless.I did my hotel management andthen masters in French in JNU,Delhi. After my studies, my dadgot me admitted to a hair schoolin London and told me I couldcontinue if I liked or quit and dowhatever I felt like.”

He smiles as he recallshis past. “Once I wentthere everything chan -ged for me. I was anintrovert— shy andpreferred being com-pletely to me — butmy hair stylingschool not just awak-ened my passion forhair styling, but alsochanged me as a person.Today, I am a people’s per-son and love interacting. Notjust that, I am a trainer too!”

What does he feel about

his vocation? “There is no rocket sci-ence. I think I am a combination of busi-ness acumen, passion for styling andhave the human touch to go with it. I feelI have the knack of styling my businessand people have it loved it that way.”

What does he say about his compa-ny not being attached to NGO or char-ity works? “I have taken a barber’s roleto a higher level, is it not a great contri-bution?” he asks teasingly. “I have

taken salons to rural areas and havegiven free classes on hair styling, don’t you think that’s enough apartfrom the fact that my development

has impacted the entire stylingindustry.”

Asked if the hair styleover-rated today, he

answers, “Not at all, today just like the

whole world is grow-ing so is the fashionindustry.” He contin-ues with a question,

“When you wake upevery morning, the first

thing youdo is tie yourhair properly, isn’t it?India has now woken uphair education and con-tinues to evolve for thebetter.

Advantage Karthika, deuce Owaisi! The contract marriage between the Congress and the MIM to rule the GHMC in turn seems to be on the rocks as themayor keeps the MIM guessing with just four days to hand over mayoralty to it. Postnoon finds out the mayor’s strengthInkeshaf [email protected]

The Mayor Karthika Ch a -ndra Reddy who bel ongsto the Congress is sittingpretty. Wi th just four

days left to hand over the may-oral baton to the ruling partnerMIM as per the agreement, sheshows no hurry to act. The rea-son, say knowledgeable sources,is the law itself.

According to Section 91 ofGHMC Act-1955 no no-confi-dence motion can be movedwithin three years from the dateof assuming office of the mayoror deputy mayor. Reddy is com-pleting two years by December3 and she is supposed to haveresigned a month ago to facili-tate election of a new mayorfrom MIM for the next twoyears. The Congress-MIMagreement is 2+2+1 or two yearseach to the Congress and the

MIM and again the last year tothe Congress.

The MIM chief AkbaruddinOwaisi had to write to the chiefminister “reminding” him ofthe agreement. Despite that themayor has not indicated hermind. Owaisi then met thePCCI chief Botsa Satyanarayanawho had requested the MIM foran extension of one more yearto the Congress. Owaisi hasrefused. “I still hope the

Congress will honour the agree-ment,” Owaisi says with a tingeof desperation.

The power corridors of theGHMC are abuzz with versionsthat Karthika has two otheroptions if she wants to stick to theposition. One is that she could upher ante against the Congressleaders who are vociferous in herquitting and if push comes toshove could even cross over tothe convenient refuge — the TRS

— in which case she would not beobliged to any party diktat. Moreover, the intra-party agree-ment will not stand scrutiny oflaw if challenged in the court.

Now, even after three yearsif a no trust vote is to be moved,it requires two-third majorityof the generally body. If forsome reasons, the motioncould not be carried for want ofquorum no more motion couldbe pressed for one year.

What the law says

The internal agreementreached between the

Congress and the MIM par-ties are maintainable in theHigh Court only if it is signedby any one of the officers ofthe department, meaningthe municipal secretary orone holding the charge. Thepetitioners can approach theHigh Court along with theagreement for issuing vaca-tion orders to the Mayor. But, again, the Mayor, inturn, can challenge the HighCourt orders citing the con-stitutional validity of GHMCAct, which says that nomotion can be movedagainst the mayor withinthree years of her election.

The Telangana RashtraSamiti (TRS) is all setto replicate Parliamentsituation in the Winter

Session of Assembly beginningfrom December 1, it is learnt.

Jamming the proceedingsto disallow any business trans-action is going to happen, aleader told Postnoon. “We

want the Assembly to pass theTelangana resolution,” he said.

TRS MLA KT Rama Rao wasforthright. Quoting UttarPradesh Chief MinisterMayawati and her proposal fordividing the State into four,Rao said, “The Congress andthe TDP must support a bill on

separate statehood forTelangana, or we will obstructthe House.”

The TRS will also support ano-confidence motion pro-posed to be moved by the mainOpposition Telugu Desamagainst the Kiran Kumar ReddyGovernment.

But the TRS leaders say inthe same breath that they donot believe the TDP was sin-cere in moving a no-trust vote.

They say the TDP was onlyissuing threats to the KiranKumar Reddy Government asits president N ChandrababuNaidu is facing many inquiries.

Meanwhile, the CongressMLAs who had joined JaganMohan Reddy, have begun toreturn to the Congress fold oneby one. “We are not going to

back the no-trust move,” saidAdinarayana Reddy one of theMLAs. His words are straws inthe wind. The TDP believes theYSR Congress can’t go againstthe Congress as it has manytroubles from varied agenciescontrolled by the Central gov-ernment.

But the TDP leadership

insists that it will move the no-trust vote. “We will move theno-confidence motion againstthe government on the farm-ers’ issues, as well as on itsanti-people policies,” TDPpolitburo members K YerranNaidu said.

However, the no-confi-dence motion is not likely topose any threat to the rulingCongress government, as theTDP has only 83 members inthe 294-member AP Assembly. If the TRS supports the no-confidence motion, aspromised, another 12 mem-bers could be added to thetally. The CPI has four and theCPM has one MLA and theyhave not yet taken a stand onthe no-trust vote. The lone LokSatta Party MLA N JayaprakashNarayan announced that hewould support the no-confi-dence motion against the gov-ernment.

10K run kicks up a row

Sudeshna Koka and Inkeshaf [email protected]

“You can buy bot-tled water butwhat of our dumbfriends? Where

will the birds and animalsquench their thirst if our watersources are polluted and driedup?” ask leaders of the CarbonCredit Race angrily after seeingthe sea of plastic wastes gener-ated by the recent 10K run.

“Every year there is a mas-sive plastic waste which littersthe Necklace Road area andHussain Sagar Lake. Last yearafter the event, we collectedabout 500 kgs of plastic waste

and showed it to the organiserswho refused to take any respon-sibility,” says WG PrasannaKumar, director, National GreenCorps.

The 10 kilometer stretch ofthe marathon track has beenstrewn with water bottles andplastic carry bags which theyoung activists of the CarbonCredit tried to clean up.

With the 10K run event get-ting bigger with each passingyear, the waste generated is alsoincreasing. As many as 100GHMC workers under the guid-ance of ITC along with scores ofrag pickers had to struggle forhours trying to clean upPeoples Plaza after the event.

For the past few years,

National Green Corps andCarbon Credit Race have beenfighting for a greener 10K runand other such related events. However, they’ve been metwith failure each time due tolack of co-operation. This year, they sought help from theHMDA and requested theorganisers to reduce the usageof plastic and use alternatives. Not only that, they have alsofiled a petition regarding thisin the High court.

“We approached the eventorganisers a month in advancewith a proposal of serving waterin steal and paper glasses andthey agreed to. However, oneday before the event they wentback on their promise and sur-

prisingly sponsored water bot-tles at the event,” said SMahender, organiser of CarbonCredit Race, state coordinatorof climate leader India.

“Our efforts and campaignsmay not have yielded positiveresults this year but we are con-fident that by next year we willturn the 10K run into a greenevent,” he added.

The 400 odd volunteers ofthe Carbon Credit Race tried todivert the attention of the par-ticipants from the bottled waterby serving water in paper cupsand reusable tumblers, but par-ticipants chose bottled water.

“We did our best to stop theparticipants and organisers

from using plastic. Since thebottled water was sponsored, participants took undue advan-tage and misused them byusing the water for washingtheir hands and playing aroundwith the half filled bottles,” saidMahender.

“Adding to the woes certainsoftware companies wentabout distributing their T-shirtsin plastic covers which furthercontaminated the lake,”Mahender added.

Greens in the City have saidthat while they admired the 10krun for health reasons theywould strive to make it a greenrun from next year. After all howwould it help if it only dirtiedour surroundings.

American-Telugu seminars to begin soon

When you enterLamakaan youare stuck with afeeling of déjà

vu — like you are steppinginto a scene of your universi-ty life. Students litteredaround, tapping away ontheir keyboards, and readingthick books in intense con-centration.

Sit there for hours to anend, doing your thing andnot a soul will disturb you.

Situated in a galliopposite GVK One,Lamakaan is essentially anold Nizami bungalow thathas been converted into anopen cultural space.Founded by Elahe Hiptoola,Ashraf Farhan, HumeraFarhan and Biju Mathew 18months ago, Lamakaan istruly a one-of-its-kindplace. In Arabic, the wordlamakaan means homeless. But here in Hyderabad, nes-tled in a quiet corner in

Bajara Hills, LaMakaan hasbecome a home for artistesof every kind.

It is a favourite haunt fortheatre groups not onlybecause it gives them ampleplace to practice but also ithas a stage in its compoundthat the groups can use fortheir performances for free. The best part about it is thatthey offer sound and lightequipment for no cost fortheir performances.

As a result, umpteen the-atre groups have got a plat-form to showcase their playsand performances. It has amanager who helps out withthe setting too. Other theatri-cal venues are too expensivefor amateur theatre groupsand therefore Lamakaanhas been the ideal steppingstone for them.

They get to hone theirskills by showcasing their artto a few hundred peoplebefore getting their wings

and making it big. Lamakaancan seat a maximum of 350and this includes people sit-ting on the parapets duringperformances of good plays.

It has also provided placefor aspiring film-makers toscreen their short films. Ithas given them the opportu-nity to meet fellow shortfilmmakers and form cinemaclubs and hold mini-shortfilm festivals that got them alot of publicity as well asaccolades. Musicians havealso been able to benefitthrough the gigs they holdevery month. Lamakaan hasbeen the birthplace forevents like PechaKucha —chitchat nights where peoplefrom different fields talkabout their professions —and Ignite Hyderabad, a con-cept on similar lines. AlsoDebate Central is held everymonth where people canenjoy open debates.

Lamakaan has given an

excellent opportunity fornetworking not only sociallybut also professionally.Every second Saturday, start-ups hold discussions wherethey help one another outby exchanging notes onmanagerial, taxation, HRand other enterprise-related issues.

What makes Lamakaaneven more ‘cool’ is that itoffers free Wi-Fi. So one canjust sit on some quaintwooden chair with marble-top tables and connect yourlaptop to the Wi-Fi and surfwith no restrictions whatso-ever coming in the way.

And not to mention theawesome canteen whichserves lip-smacking samosasand mirchi bajjis along withauthentic Irani chai. It alsoserves food like dal chawal, kheema, subzi and refresh-ments like lemonade – all ata very low cost. Samosasare the celebrities of the

menu at Lamakaan. You may wonder how the

place sustains itself consider-ing its expenses. Donationsby the founders and someanonymous donors and thelittle profits earned from thecanteen help run the place. When you visit Lamakaan, you can’t help but appreciatethe people who founded theplace. It was the brainchild ofAshraf Farhan who inheritedthe house and property fromhis uncle. He wanted Hyder -abad to have a place whereintervention in a culturalspace where artists can unle -ash the creativity within the -m, hence the birth of Lamak -aan. His wife Humera is theheart of Lamakaan, visiting itevery day to ensure thatthings are running smoothly.

Filled with passion, cre-ativity, fun, learning, art andfounded with love, it is safeto say there is no place likeLaMakaan.

Lamakaan - home for all

Youngsters kidding around near the canteen, avid theatre enthusiasts rehearsing their scripts, musicians strumming awayat their guitars and some people just chilling with a gang of friends — all under one roof, says Aishwarya Yerra

Q u o t e s f r o m L a M a k a a n f r e q u e n t e r s“Ihave been coming here since the

very beginning. I come here oftento work because the atmosphere herehelps me concentrate. It is so muchfocussed here with a lot of peace andquietude. I enjoy the debates, plays andmusic gigs. The two things that makeHyderabad unique from other cities areIrani chai and Lamakaan.”

Emanuel, Freelance writer, Ethiopian national.

“Icome here very regularly with myclassmates to do group studies. It

is a real boon to have free Wi-Fi. Also Iam from AIESEC and we hold ourdepartment meets here because it isone of the few places that offer space.”

Suvarchana, student, AIESEC member.

“It is a place that has majorlyimpacted theatre. It has given

a platform to amateur theatregroups to gain their foothold. A lotof documentaries have been shothere. From the past six months Ihave been working fromLamakaan itself.”

Sriram Karri, Writer.

Quote from one of the founders

“Ialways wanted a place whereI could meet up with friends

and watch a play and spend time. There so many experimental

plays which have great potentialbut not are not commercially feasi-ble. So Lamakaan is an institutionfor these projects.”

NEW DELHI: Prime MinisterManmohan Singh Tuesdaychaired an all-party meetingto arrive at a consensus overallowing foreign direct invest-ment (FDI) in the retail sector. However, consensus remai nedelusive and reatil stocks wentup on the arrival of news.

The Opposition stalledboth Houses of Parliament, resulting in their adjournmenttill noon.

The meeting at the parlia-

ment annexe is being attend-ed by opposition parties likeBharatiya Janata Party (BJP),the Left, AIADMK, BahujanSamaj Party (BSP) andSamajwadi Party as well as theCongress and its allies like theTrinamool Congress andDMK.

The meeting is being seenas an effort by the governmentto reach out to the oppositionas five days of parliament’swinter session have been lost

without transacting any majorbusiness. The winter session isslated to end Dec 21.

Government sources saidthe meeting was convened tofocus upon the issue of FDI inretail, which has become thebone of contention with notonly the opposition but alsoallies of the government.

Other issues on the agen-da in the winter session likepending legislations will alsobe taken up, the sources said.

HYDERABAD: “We cannotsolve all problems. If you seeindustry analogy, when Indiaopened up for liberalisation 15years ago, the industry did notlet government open the mar-kets saying that this woulddamage small-scale industrieswhich in turn effects the larg-er employment section.

“The same situation is hap-pening even to retail now. Butlater, industry grew and gotbenefited. They were thebiggest beneficiaries of thepolicy change. Same thing isgoing happen even to retail,”Ramesh Datla, chairman, CII’sNational MSME Council, toldPostnoon.

Talking about tradersconcerns, he said all couldnot be satisfied when therewas a change. Though somepeople would get affected,long-term benefits should betaken into consideration.Traders had to adapt them-

selves to other practices likemoving away from beingretailers to suppliers.

The FDI in multi-brandretail would be only impactingthe cities. As many as 30 percent of SMEs in the countrywould be impacted by thisdecision. SMEs, according tohim, need not be manufactur-ing units.

There would be a lot ofopp osition initially, but itwould all change in duecourse. In Indian demograph-ics, retail was everywhere. Theopening up of FDI would affect20 per cent of retail business inurban areas.

Datla gave the example ofMetro Cash & Carry saying thatthe retailers, who used tosource stocks from multipleplaces, were now dependenton a single-point wholesalerunder one roof. They werebenefitted a lot. The ultimatebeneficiary with the openingup of FDI would be the con-sumer.

This would also open upopportunities to people whodropped out of colleges andwho passed out class X andwere in need of employment.

The Indian retail pie isgrowingThe FDI could not take marketshare in one go. They couldnot even take 10 per cent in 10

years in the Indian retail mar-ket. Small retailers couldcoexist with big players. In away, the FDI would also pushthe small retailers to be moreorganised. Introduction of FDIin developing countries likeChina, Mexico and Brazilmade the unorganised retailsector to be healthier thanbefore, said Jay Galla, CII,Andhra Pradesh.

The retail market in thecountry today was expected tobe about $ 475 billion. Out ofwhich, organised retail wasonly about six to seven percent. This is going to go up to $1,250 billion by 2020. The shareof organised retail sectorwould be $ 260 billion thatconstitutes 21 per cent of thewhole retail. Unorganisedretailers would still be around80 per cent of $ 1,250 billon. They will continue to grow andplay a significant role with anorganised sector, according toT T Ashok, Cha irman, CII,Southern Region.

MUMBAI: The BSE benchmarkSensex fell by over 98 points inopening trade on Tuesday asparticipants booked profits reg-istered during yesterday’s rallyin the domestic market.

However, a firming trend onother Asian bourses, in tandemwith overnight gains in the US,capped the losses here.

The 30-share barometer, wh -i ch surged by 471.70 points in theprevious session, declined by98.37 points, or 0.61 per cent, to16,068.76 in opening trade on Tu -esday. The wide-based NSE Niftyindex al so fo llowed suit, declin-ing by 20.60 points, or 0.42 percent, to 4,830.70.They saidmounting opposition to the gov-ernment’s move to permit for-eign direct investment (FDI) inthe multi-brand retail sector alsodampened the sentiment.

The Indian rupee mo ved upmarginally by 4 paise to Rs 51.91per US dollar in morning trade onthe Interbank For eign Exchangetoday, tracking gai ns registered bythe euro overseas against theAmerican currency. Forex dealerssaid dollar weakness against theeuro and other currency riv alsoverseas and a higher opening inthe domestic stock market sup-ported the Indian rupee’s rise.

TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 29, 201112A critical look at games and players Play Field

Big-spending City haveromped to the top ofthe table, where theyhold a five-point

advantage over ManchesterUnited following a 1-1 draw atLiverpool. Roberto Mancini’smen are already being laudedas champions in waiting, manysuggesting they could emulateWenger’s Invincibles team of2003/2004.

However, Wenger said, “Youhave to go through the wholewinter when you play in theChampions League — we didthat. In the FA Cup as well, thesemi-finals of the ChampionsLeague — to do that together isvery difficult. It [an unbeatenleague campaign] looks unlike-

ly, but you never know. You cannever really doubt.”

He added, “However, in themodern game you need a bit ofluck — watching the gameagainst Liverpool they couldhave been beaten.

“Overall hopefully for usnot, because we want to get asclose as possible to them and itis important to beat them.”

Wenger added on ArsenalPlayer, “Financially it is impos-sible to compete with them. Onthe football pitch it is possible. Our squad has more experienceand I am confident we canshow that.

“We are still a young team. The success of this club is basedon the development of young

players and we still want toshow that.”

Tuesday night could see thereturn of Samir Nasri to face hisformer employers for the firsttime since a somewhat acrimo-nious £24million switch to Cityat the end of August. Wenger, though, holds no grudges.

He said, “I hope Samir gets agood reception. I don’t know ifhe will play but personally Iwant every player who hasplayed for us to be respectedwhen they come back.

“Samir improved tremen-dously while he was with us. Hehas developed fantasticallywell from a non-scoring playerto a guy who could make adecision.” EVENING STANDARD

Blackburn manager Steve Keansays he is ready to meet some ofthe club’s disgruntled fans if

required to do so.The Ewood Park outfit are bottom

of the Barclays Premier League and asection of Rovers supporters have forsome time been staging protestsagainst Kean, calling for him to besacked.

“I will always take direction fromother people at the club more qualifiedthan me to organise something likethat,” the 44-year-old said ahead ofTuesday’s Carling Cup quarter-final atCardiff.

“But if it is going to happen, then Iwould be available to do that.”

Asked if he thought such a movewas needed, Kean said, “I don’t know.

“Possibly they might want accessand want to know a little bit moreabout what is going on at Ewood.

“I think there has been a lot of sug-gestion that they would like to know alittle bit more about the organisationand the running of the club. That is not

my department, but I’m happy to talkon the football side.”

One meeting Kean definitely hasscheduled is with the club’s ownersVenky’s, with whom he will be dis-cussing potential January transfer win-dow signings that might boostBlackburn’s ailing league campaign.

“We’ve got a list and I will get ameeting with the owners in the nextthree or four days,” Kean said.

“Hopefully we will be bringing infresh faces and some quality in thewindow to compliment what we havealready got.” ES

Manchester City boss RobertoMancini claims it is littlewonder England struggle in

major tournaments when playerssometimes get little respite betweendomestic fixtures.

The Italian has expressed anger athis side’s schedule ahead of Tuesdaynight’s Carling Cup quarter-final atArsenal, a match that will kick offaround 50 hours after a drainingBarclays Premier League clash atLiverpool ended.

Mancini feels he has no choice butto play an entirely different side andhas even threatened to send outjunior team players if the situationarises again.

He said, “We will change all theteam because this is an incrediblesituation.”

He added, “For this reason thenational team arrives at EuropeanChampionships and World Cups andthey are dying — they do not havetime to recover.

“To play in two days, two games

like this, after a Champions Leaguegame, is incredible. I think the playersshould say something about this.

“For the players it is important toplay, but it is important also to recov-er, a minimum three days betweenone game and another.”

Mancini’s comments echo similarsentiments expressed by Liverpoolmanager Kenny Dalglish, who mustalso prepare a side to play at Chelseain the Carling Cup tomorrow.

Mancini said, “I agree with him.“I think sometimes we should play

with 11 young players, 14-15 years. Itis not correct, this, not only for us butall the players.”

Mancini would have been forcedto leave out Gareth Barry and MarioBalotelli for the trip to the EmiratesStadium anyway with both now serv-ing a one-game ban.

Former England midfielder OwenHargreaves, fit again after a minorcalf injury and looking to resurrecthis career with City, is one prominentplayer likely to feature. ES

Atroubled 2011 finallycame to an end forHamilton on Sunday in

the kind of circumstances thatwere perhaps to be expected ashe suffered the first mechani-cal retirement of the season atthe Brazilian Grand Prix.

Hamilton, whose currentdeal expires at the end of 2012,said: “What is most importantfor me next year is getting backto where I should be - to thegood performances, to win-ning, to enjoying life, enjoyingthe year. I’m at a positive placewithin myself. Things are get-ting better, and I just want tocontinue on this path becauseit would be good.”

He added: “I don’t thinkthere’s any question of mycommitment to the team, sothere’s no real rush to have todo anything. I’ll just focus onthe year.”

Asked if he felt it was morethan likely he would stay,Hamilton said: “Yeah, I do. I’mconfident about that.

“Martin has already spokento me about re-signing, so Iknow it’s there at some point, and I guess at some stage whenwe have time we’ll sit down (todiscuss it further).

“But the most importantthing is to focus on the seasonahead.” As Hamilton has beenwith the team since he was 13,team principal Whitmarshfeels it is hard to see him goinganywhere else.

“By his extraordinarily high

standards he has had a difficultyear, but he’s in a positive placeright now,” said Whitmarsh.“There is a deep affectionbetween him and the team andI’m sure that love affair willcarry on for many years tocome.”

The Londoner officiallyretired in October but wasknown to be ready to fight

again if the opportunity arose forhim to avenge his July defeat byWladimir Klitschko or take on hiselder brother.

And Haye has confirmed oneof the worst-kept secrets insport, telling the BBC’s Hardtalkprogramme: “I haven’t seen acontract but there’s definitely ta -lks going on. I said before Iretired I would love that fightand there’s a date in March th at’salready been talked about.”

The Ukrainian brothers alw a -ys claimed negotiations had be -en taking place over a meetingwith Vitali, the WBC champion, following Haye’s unification lossto IBF/WBO champion Wlad imirin Hamburg earlier this year.

Haye himself had alreadystated he had merely “retiredfrom fighting anyone withoutthe Klitschko surname’’ as helooks to redeem himself follow-ing a poor showing againstWladimir in the summer.

The Englishman recently to -ld Press Association Sport: “Onlytime will tell whether the Klits -chkos need me more than I needthem. “They won’t believe thatthey do but it depends what they

want out of boxing. If they wantguaranteed easy victories thenthey can do what they’ve alwaysdone but if they want a toughchallenge you’d think they wouldwant to beat down my door.”

A date in early March has lo -ng been talked about, in all like-lihood to be staged in Dusseldorfin Germany.

CUTTACK: India’s previoushome one-dayer took place infront of a sparse crowd at theEden Gardens, reinforcing fearsover the quantity of cricket beingplayed, but with Tuesday’smatch taking place at the small-er cricketing centre of Cuttack, ajam-packed stadium is expect-ed, reports cric info.com. Eventhough the the biggest crowd-pullers like Dhoni and Tendulkarare missing, tickets sales at theBarabati Stadium have beenbrisk, and even the practice ses-sions drew plenty of spectators.

A full-strength India wouldbe expected to roll over WestIndies at home, but they aremissing at least four of their hea -dliners. In addition, they havelost the most experienced bow lerin their squad, Praveen Kumar —he was ruled out of the first threeone-dayers with an injury. Thatmeans the most seasoned of thequicks is Vinay Kumar, all of 11

one-dayers old, giving the stand-in captain Sehwag something ofa challenge.

India are also missing two oftheir finishers, MS Dhoni andYuvraj Singh, giving the likes ofRohit Sharma an audition for apermanent place in the hugelycompetitive middle order.

Despite India facing thesehurdles, Darren Sammy has noillusions of the task ahead of histeam, calling the series a “very, very tough challenge”. Australiaare the only team to have won aone-day series in India sinceApril 2005. West Indies are boost-ed by the arrival of KieronPollard, an impact player whocan quickly transform matches, and Lendl Simmons, their mostconsistent one-day batsman ofthe year. Sunil Narine, theTrinidad & Tobago offspinnerwhose variations my s tified bats-men in the Cham pions LeagueT20, could also pose problems.

Results of a new study onhuman face transplantation, led by Darren M Smith, MD,plastic surgery resident at the

University of Pittsburgh MedicalCentre (UPMC), were presented todayat the annual meeting of theRadiological Society of North America(RSNA).

Devastating injuries or defects ofthe face are extremely challenging, ifnot impossible, to satisfactorily recon-struct by traditional surgical tech-niques. In face transplantation, facialtissue from a donor is transferred toreconstruct the defect, restore essen-tial life-sustaining functions — such asbreathing, chewing and speaking —and, above all, re-establish normalhuman appearance.

“This surgery is for patients withdevastating injuries to the face, whohave lost their ability to smell, eat andengage socially and have no otherconventional treatment options,” saidVijay S Gorantla, MD, PhD, adminis-trative medical director of theReconstructive TransplantationProgramme at UPMC.

Clearly defining and understand-ing the complex tissue deficits anddefects that accompany devastatingfacial injuries like electric burns, blastwounds and accidental trauma arecritical for both technical success andobjective analysis of the return of

function after face transplantation. Medical imaging plays a major role

in the entire spectrum of face trans-plantation, ranging from patient selec-tion, donor and recipient surgicalplanning, and postoperative assess-ment of returning motor and sensoryfunction. Face transplantation is alengthy, complicated procedure thatinvolves reconstruction of multipletissues — such as skin, muscle, bloodvessels, nerves and bone — by a teamof surgeons.

Currently, to prepare for facialtransplantation, plastic or plastermodels are first created based on 3-DCT or angiographic images or recon-struction. Following this, mock cadav-eric dissections are performed to allowsurgeons to plan for the donor andrecipient surgeries. MRI and otherimaging exams may also be used toprovide supplemental information.

By combining information from

multiple imaging exams and creating asophisticated 3-D computer model, theresearchers for this study were betterable to assess the facial structure andcontours, the underlying bone, mus-cles, nerves and vessels, as well as theextent of damage.

Using sophisticated computer mod-elling software, doctors Smith andGorantla, along with Joseph Losee, MD,integrated information from 3-D CT, CTangiography, MRI and high-definitiontractography to create a 3-D model ofthe patient’s head and neck anatomy. The same type of modelling technologyis often used in movies to animatecomputer-generated characters withdetailed three-dimensional human fea-tures and realistic expressions.

“We have integrated data from mul-tiple imaging sources into a single 3-Drepresentation that allows for real-timeuser interaction and modification,” DrSmith said. “In assessing eligibility forthis procedure, it is critical to under-stand whether the patient has enoughblood vessels and bone structure tosupport new facial tissue. This 3-Dmodelling helps us customise the pro-cedure to the patient’s individual anato-my so that the donor tissue will fit like apuzzle piece onto the patient’s face.”

Using computer modelling, theteam also overlaid the patient modelwith a polygon mesh of a generichuman face.

Calorie diet ups heart function in obese diabeticAlow-calorie diet eliminates

insulin dependence and leads toimproved heart function in obese

patients with type 2 diabetes, accordingto a study presented at the annualmeeting of the Radiological Society ofNorth America (RSNA).

“Lifestyle interventions may havemore powerful beneficial cardiac effectsthan medication in these patients,” saidthe study’s lead author, SebastiaanHammer, MD, PhD, from theDepartment of Radiology at LeidenUniversity Medical Centre in theNetherlands. “It is striking to see how arelatively simple intervention of a verylow calorie diet effectively cures type 2diabetes mellitus. Moreover, theseeffects are long term, illustrating thepotential of this method.”

Diabetes is a chronic illness inwhich there are high levels of glucose inthe blood. According to the Centres forDisease Control and Prevention (CDC),

diabetes affects 25.8 million people inthe US, with 18.8 million diagnosedcases and an estimated seven millionundiagnosed cases. Type 2 is the mostcommon form of diabetes, representing90 to 95 per cent of diagnosed casesamong adults.

Pericardial fat is a visceral fat com-partment around the heart that can bedetrimental to cardiac function, espe-cially in people with metabolic dis-ease. Dr Hammer and colleagues setout to determine the long-term effectsof initial weight loss induced by caloricrest riction on pericardial fat and car-diac function in obese patients withtype 2 diabetes.

Using cardiac MRI, the researchersanalysed cardiac function and pericar-dial fat in 15 patients—including sevenmen and eight women — with type 2diabetes before and after four monthsof a diet consisting of 500 calories daily.Changes in body mass index (BMI)

were also measured. The resultsshowed that caloric restriction resultedin a decrease in BMI from 35.3 to 27.5over four months. Pericardial fatdecreased from 39 millilitres (ml) to 31ml, and E/A ratio, a measure of dias-tolic heart function, improved from0.96 to 1.2.

After an additional 14 months of fol-low-up on a regular diet, BMI increasedto 31.7, but pericardial fat onlyincreased slightly to 32 ml. E/A ratioafter follow-up was 1.06.

“Our results show that 16 weeks ofcaloric restriction improved heartfunction in these patients,” Dr Ham -mer said. “More importantly, despiteregain of weight, these beneficial car-diovascular effects were persistent overthe long term.”

Dr Hammer pointed out that thesefindings stress the importance ofincluding imaging strategies in thesetypes of therapy regimens.

TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 29, 201118Holistic view of mind, body and soulH‑FactorFatty liverdisease hasno affect onlongevity

Surprisingly, fatty liver dis-ease that targets the obeseor patients of heart disease

poses no risk to one’s longevity.Non-alcoholic fatty liver dis-

ease (NAFLD) is a common con-dition tied with obesity and heartdisease, undermining health andlongevity.

But a new study byresearchers suggests the condi-tion does not affect survival, theBritish Medical Journal reports.

“Physicians have consideredfatty liver disease a really worri-some risk factor for cardiovascu-lar disease,” says Mariana Lazo, postdoctoral fellow at the JohnsHopkins University School ofMedicine.

“Our data analysis shows thisdoesn’t appear to be the case. Wewere surprised to say the leastbecause we expected to learn byhow much non-alcoholic fattyliver disease increased the risk ofdeath...,” adds Lazo, who led thestudy.

Using data from survey of11,371 Americans between 1994and 1998 who were followed forup to 18 years as part of theThird National Health andNutrition Examination Survey(NHANES III), researcherschecked liver enzyme levels andultrasound tests for evidence ofNAFLD.

They ultimately looked atdeath rates associated withNAFLD. The participants wereaged between 20 and 74 yearsduring the survey years, accord-ing to a Hopkins statement.

The Hopkins team found noincrease in mortality amongthose with NAFLD, which wasidentified in 20 percent of theNHANES participants.

All your life you’vebeen one of thosepeople who was firstmade fun of for your

geeky glasses and later calleda nerd. Now that you’ve out-grown that awkward phase, the glasses still bother you asyou want to now shed those‘four eyes’ and explore aworld where you can step outconfidently with perfectvision and attractively madeup eyes. Ho w ever, you don’twant to take your chanceswith a Lasik surgery, given allthe complications and sideeffects it curtails. Nor do youwant to wear contact lensesfor life, given the extreme careand hygiene conditions theyrequire. In such a scenarioyou might want to considerintraocular lens implants torectify your vision.

Known as Phakic intraocu-lar lenses (PIOL) these lensesare made of a special plasticknown as collamer and can beimplanted in the eye for aperfect vision. Unlike otherregular contact lenses thesePIOLs are implanted perma-nently in a patient’s eye andeffectively restore perfect 6/6vision. What’s best is that theyrequire no maintenance andthe procedure doesn’t requirehospitalisation either.

“PIOLs are permanentcontact lenses that are injectedinto the eye. Usually implant-ed in an outpatient procedureunder local or general anaes-

thesia. We make a temporalincision on the limbus (thearea where the black andwhite parts of the eye meet) ofabout 3 mm width. Throughthis incision we inject the lens

which then spreads and opensto offer full vision. We usuallytuck it behind the pupil and itis not visible externally likeother contact lenses. Theadvantage in this procedure isthat the cornea is not touchedat all,” says Dr Kasu PrasadReddy, CEO, Maxivision EyeHospitals.

One of the advantages ofgetting PIOLs implanted isthat they can be done for any-body with an eyesight powerof -1 to -18 or -20. “This lensis made with a special plasticcalled collamer. It is biologi-cally friendly and onceimplanted you don’t even feelit. Also because it is madespecially there is no scope forreactions or allergies. Usuallypeople with problems like dry

eyes and infections cannotwear contact lenses. However, with PIOLs there is no suchlimitation,” explains DrReddy, adding, “Post-surgerycare is also not too complicat-ed. We prescribe antibioticdrops and steroid drops for alimited period of time andadvise patients not too rubtheir eyes the first few days.”

Concerns like changingvision with age are also not anissue. “Once these lenses havebeen implanted there is noproblem. After the age of 40people anyway need readingglasses and people with PIOLsonly need to wear readingglasses with no other change.Even when people who devel-op cataract with age don’thave cause for worry. We canremove the PIOL, remove thecataract and place intraocularlenses that are meant forpatients who’ve had cataractoperations,” says Dr Reddy.

The price however, mightbe a stumbling block. Regularspherical lenses cost any-where between `30,000 to `32,000 per lens, while toriclenses cost `35,000 per lens. With the cost of surgery, hos-pital fees etc the entire proce-dure can cost up to `1.5 lakhfor both the eyes. However, given the convenience ofbeing spectacles free for a life-time, it might just be worththe cause.

Irrespective of how muchiron you pump or howmany hours you spendat the gym toning your

biceps to woo a girl, if yousmell like a rat at the end ofthe day, you know you arenot going to be attracted toyourself either.

The first rule for both par-ties stands true, women andmen are attracted to themore obvious physicalattributes of the opposite sex.But when it comes to scents, some men are attracted to awoman's natural body odour, but you can't really say thatthe same works for women. Ifyou smell bad, you are off the

list. Therefore, men'scolognes or perfumes arecomparatively more stronger.Your days of smelling like apirate are over matey!

“I think it all comes downto personal hygiene.Everyone should smell good!A man that smells good iswhat raises the attraction

factor for most women. Ithink it’s embarassing to tellsomeone that they smell bad,it’s important that they knowit themselves. My favouritemale perfume is DavidoffCool Water and my dadwears it. I love the fragranceas it smells so fresh!” saysactress Aksha.

While women maychoose sweeter fragrances, men like to wear strongersmelling perfumes. Thoughthe range of perfumes formen is not as vast as it is forwomen, there are still a cou-ple of brands that cater tothe likes of many a metrosex-ual man. With a variety ofbrands manufacturing sever-al types of colognes for men,it becomes a daunting task tochoose for one that suits thepersonality.

Fashion photographerColston Julian agrees.“Fragrances are quite atouchy subject for men. Theydon't really feel the need togo out and buy perfumes forthemselves. Personally, I justuse lighter scents for theevening like Issey Miyake

and Chanel. During the day, because I am doing so manyoutdoor shoots, I prefer towear a Calvin Klein. I am nottoo fussy about my per-fumes. I will wear them so Idon't kill the ones around mewith the smell,” he chortles.

Today, many celebritiesare taking to promoting dif-ferent brands. Raphael Nadalpromotes L'Homme Sport byLanvin, Hugh Laurie withChloroform Armani byArmani, power coupleVictoria and David havecome out with IntimatelyBeckham, MatthewMcConaughey with Dolceand Gabbana, it has becomeclear that men today arekeen on keeping up appear-ances. But, then its advisableto keep changing your per-sonal fragrance every nowand then lest your presenceis felt because of the scent ofyour trademark cologne.

“It's good to have differ-

ent perfumes stacked upbecause you seriously can'tbe wearing the same thing tobreakfast, lunch or dinner.Make sure to try out the per-fume before you buy itbecause essentially its notabout the smell from a bottlebut its also about how itsmells on you. It's all aboutgaining that unique individu-al smell,” opines Colston.

Thepeople associated with it alsoplay a significant role butthen my reason to do a partic-ular film can also be as stupidas Fiji Islands. Suppose thefilm is to be shot in FijiIslands for a month, I will doit. There should be some ele-ment of excitement.”

For Rajit, two mediums ofexpression are very important— theatre and cinema and heis actively involved with the-atre. “Theatre has always beena passion, I even own a the-atre company and we arealways part of the differenttheatre festivals,” clarifiesRajit who prefers to stay awayfrom commercial cinema dueto the lack of right roles. “Theroles that are offered to meare that of a brother or afather and I don’t know whatto do in those roles. If some-one tells me to do somethingdefinite then I can, otherwiseit’s quite silly,” he says. ButRajit is happy about the

future of theatre in Indiasince he sees a lot of young-sters getting into it. He has apiece of advice though foraspiring theatre actors,“Complement it with anoth-

er source of income sincetheatre is not enough to

pay your bills.”

ripple of social consciousness vis-a-visautism, three women have

come to IFFI this year armed withscripts and story ideas, aimed

to carpet bomb the “intellectual dis-ability” cause further.

Shalini Gupta, Neena Wagh andKusum Tiwari — all mothers of intellec-tually disabled children — will conduct

ideas, which we will share with potentialfilm-makers and scriptwriters. There are

many more stories like Taare Zameen Par,Paa and My Name Is Khan that remain

untold and there is a dire need to makefilms on other aspects of intellectual dis-

ability,” Gupta said. The trio are a part of Saath, a loosely

Film Panchvatiintroduced meto Buddhism

Actress Deepti Naval’s association withBuddhism as an adult dates back to hermovie Panchvati, based on a short

story by writer Kusum Ansal in 1985. She saysshe believes in the religion as it teaches to“live and let live”.

“I was back after graduating from NewYork, and Panchvati took me to Japan whereit was screened at a festival. After the festival,I visited Hiroshima and from there took off toisland Miyajima. I was roaming around theisland with my camera when I heard chant-ing. It was most mesmerising,” Naval said. “Iwas completely taken up, somebody said itwas Buddhist chanting. It was completelycontrasting to the jostling in temples,” addedthe 54-year-old who is here for the four-dayGlobal Buddhist Congregation 2012 thatstarted Sunday.

The movie adapted from the short story,Ek Aur Panchvati, narrates the tale of aSadhavi, a painter from Nepal who eventuallytakes to Thangka paintings at the Pashu -patinath Temple after a failed marriage.

“In the early eighties, there was no sign ofBuddhism in India, the idea of peaceful chantin a temple this was wow. I returned andstarted reading Buddha’s teachings whichinfluenced me — I constantly try to maintaina calm soul and try not to become agitated,”she added. IANS

It takes us a moment to believethat Sri Rama Rajyam was hisfirst film as an art director. Onewould easily mistake that the sets

were probably designed by an expe-rienced art director like ThottaTharani. Such was the grandeur of SriRama's palace. Meet Manne KiranKumar, the sculptor behind the mam-moth sets of Bapu's latest mythologi-cal film Sri Rama Rajyam.

“I was always infatuated withSouth Indian temples and I guess thatwas the reason why I was able to do agood job,” says Kiran. He graduatedwith a diploma in architecture with aspecialisation in architecture of tem-ples from SVR University, Tirupati in1996. A year later, he joined RamojiFilm City as an assistant art directorand went on to work under BhaskarRaju on several in-house projects.

“In the past 13 years, I haveworked with Thotta Tharani on filmslike Sivaji, Robo and Dam 999 andAnand Sai for Yamadonga. I washeading the team at Ramoji Film Citywhich built huge sets for these threefilms,” he reveals.

Kiran's association with Bapudates back to 2004 when the veterandirector was making a TV serial SriBhagavatham for ETV. Six years laterwhen Bapu and Yalamanchili Saibabuwere looking for appropriate sets forSri Rama Rajyam, Kiran joined theteam. “They had come to Film City tosee if there were any existing sets tomake their mythological film. Sincethey didn't find what they were look-ing for, I came forward to do the job.Bapu narrated the script and I drewthe layouts which probablyimpressed them. I must also thank artdirector Ravinder for giving me thisopportunity. Initially he was sup-posed to do the art direction for theentire film; however, he was caughtup with other projects and Bapu

wanted someone to be present on thesets all the time,” Kiran says adding,“Bapu is a great artist. He's one of thefew directors who prefers to have astoryboard before a shot is cannedand we had the shot division readywhich made our job easy.”

Along with 500 members, Kiranbuilt four sets for the film – RajDarbar, Pooja Mandiram, KaushalyaMandiram and Sayana Mandiram. The team worked continuously for 90days at a stretch and since every sethad to be completed on time, theybegan working on each set simulta-neously. “You will see a lot of influ-ence of South Indian architecture inthe film and everything was shot inRamoji Film City. The sets were sohuge that we couldn't use Plaster ofParis or wood. Instead, fibre was usedto build most of the sets to get thedetailing right. Since we had built 20ft high miniatures for all the sets, theheight was extended by another 16 ftusing CGI,” he reveals. Talking moreabout the grandeur of the sets, Kiranadds, “We used metallic paintsinstead of water paints, although theformer is six times more expensive.

Since it's a mythological film, theglow is very important and the out-put is a lot better when metallicpaints are used.”

The producer ended up spendingclose to Rs10 crore on the sets includ-ing construction of the sets and thesubsequent CGI. “Saibabu and Bapuhave a great taste when it comes tofilms and it was quite tough to pleasethem. One day we were askedto rebuild a mandapamwhich is shown in thesong as where Luva-

Kusha sing in the streetsof Ayodhya and we hadto complete it within sixhours so that theschedule isn't dis-turbed. More than3,000 peopleworked on rebuild-ing the mandapamand Bapu was quitepleased with our workwhen he came to theset the next day,” Kiranrecalls.

His work in SriRama Rajyam hasalready opened moredoors for him in thefilm industry. He'scurrently working onKalyan Ram'supcoming 3D filmand anotherKannada film star-ring Upendrawhich is a socio-fantasy. “I am quitehappy that severalart directors andother technicians haveappreciated my work. Thewhole credit goes toSaibabu and Bapu,”he says.

How to Play KakuroKakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is alsosuitably different. The key question: “How do you play Kakuro?”, wellhere are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike insudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells likein a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells willcontain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers.

However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in therow or column referenced by the number.

Within each collection of cells - called a run - any of the numbers 1to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once.

Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly:In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you

will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. Thismeans that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14.Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on...

So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is donethrough elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work outthe answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid com-binations, and hence the answer for this particular run.

Note the second cell in row two - it contains two numbers, 30 and11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.
