Reinforcing employability in a rapidly changing world
In the cut and thrust of the modern-day job market, globalization is proving to be a double-edged sword. Whilst job seekers benefit from the additional opportunities opened up on a worldwide basis, they must now compete not only with their local counterparts, but also with overseas elites in the job market.
Lifelong learning is the buzz word these days. To safeguard their employability in an increasingly competitive job market, workers must supplement and update themselves with the latest technological know-how and modern management practices. They can no longer be content with static and local knowledge because they need to meet rising international benchmarks.
With an ever-expanding pool of candidates, more and more employers are looking for outstanding personal traits, specialized skills and technical competence in their selection process. Those with global perspectives and networking flair could very well tip the scale in their favor.
Educ ation ins titutions , b oth lo c al and overseas, have, in recent years, been quick to meet the demands for lifelong learning, principally from students who want to reinforce their employability, and pave the way for career progression. Almost all the postgraduate programs in the market now place a special focus on an international teaching faculty, plus a cosmopolitan mix of student, in order to facilitate more stimulating interaction.
The acquisition of knowledge is no longer limited to the confines of the classrooms, as the learning platform has been extended to study missions, attachments, seminars and conferences, not to mention the increasingly popular e-learning mode with its ever-improving resources and facilities. And many programs are family-friendly with the flexibility built around the student’s circumstances.
This booklet contains a wealth of information on a variety of innovative programs. After identifying your goals, browse through them and pick the one that best meets your aspirations, background and circumstances. It could be the start of an effective career-booster.

The world is currently in a state of rapid globalization and technology has become a driving force of the knowledge-intensive economy. With these changes in mind, many senior executives have become aware of the need to equip themselves better to face the new economic order.
A DBA allows a student to a more in-depth investigation into a single topic than an MBA. The majority of students that take an interest in a DBA don’t want the broad information taught in a Master’s degree as they have already attained them through work experience. On the other hand, while a PhD also allows one to specialize in a topic, it is considered too academic in nature. There is where a DBA fills the gap, and provides PhD-level education through practical and applicable coursework.
All students studying a DBA at CityU have over ten years of work experience. In order to match the high level of knowledge of each student, all faculty members are at least of Associate Professor level.
“We are very proud of our world-renowned professors with extensive global expertise and in-depth China knowledge,” says Prof. Muammer Ozer, Director of CityU’s DBA program. “Similarly, we are very honored to work with our diverse group of students who are successful business leaders with a passion to solve complex business issues that have implications well beyond the boundaries of their organizations.”
Commenced in 2006, the DBA program has been constantly evolving to accommodate the rapid changes in the business field. “The program focuses on solving important business problems, our research changes as business problems change. These include most updated topics such as big data, data security, one-belt-one-road, FinTech, etc., which were not known back in 2006,” says Prof. Ozer.
To cater to the needs of students from various business sectors, the program has an emphasis on the core values and qualities that are common to all businesses on a deeper level, such as leadership and human resources. An added benefit of this program is that students have the opportunity to network with people from other industries and learn how they approach to solving business problems.
To ensure that a DBA candidate can progress smoothly during the course of the four- to six-year part-time degree, each candidate will be assigned a senior faculty member as a mentor in their first year of study. Under the guidance of the mentor, a candidate is expected to develop a structured program of study, which will lead them to identify their thesis topic and proposal.
Prof. Ozer adds, “We speak a lot about impact, and if the candidates’ research has an effect, it will be a great contribution and that is precisely what we want to acheieve.”

To help address the problem of manpower shortage in medical care in Hong Kong, the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) has, since 2009, offered a Master of Nursing Science (Pre-registration) (MNSP) Programme which provides bachelor’s degree holders in any discipline with an opportunity to study the art and science of nursing from a variety of perspectives.
The Masters programme aims at cultivating future nurses with a strong theory and knowledge base in the biological, behavioral and nursing sciences; the ability to make critical, informed judgments and reasoned decisions in nursing practice; and the skills to provide high quality patient care.
The all-rounded programme focuses on the cognitive, affective and psychomotor knowledge and skills required to provide safe, competent, sensitive and holistic nursing care in a wide range of primary, secondary and tertiary health care settings.
The 3-year full -t i m e p r o g r a m m e comprises 8 terms and 4 clinical practice which includes 30 courses , cover ing various subjects, such as b io lo gica l and behavioral sciences, health promotion and maintenance, nursing practice and theory,
nursing research, and legal and ethical issues in nursing. Students can gain experience in the care of clients in both community and hospital settings.
Through clinical practice, students will fulfill the requirement of becoming a registered nurse by gaining the foundation of clinical nursing experiences. The aim of clinical practice is to provide opportunities for students to apply the knowledge and skills they have learned from the theoretical courses to nursing practice in varying settings.
The programme adopts a competency-based education approach to continuously develop students’ core practice competencies, including nurse-sensitive outcome evaluation, communication and human caring relationships, management, leadership, and knowledge integration, as well as their logical, creative and critical thinking skills.
In this context, graduates can be well equipped to accommodate the changing needs of the health care system. It as well maximizes graduates’ contribution to society which is facing an acceleration in aged population and health expectations.
Peter, a graduate of the MNSP programme in 2012, is now working in the Cardiac Catheterisation and Intervention Centre of the Hong Kong Sanatorium & Hospital as a registered nurse. “The three amazing years of studying in CUHK have well prepared me for professional and critical thinking to make patient-oriented decisions,” he says.
The programme, he explains, emphasises total patient care and equip students with both fundamental and specialty nursing knowledge and skills, empowering them to embark on a career path in nursing.“Most importantly, the programme has changed my way of interacting with others in and outside my workplace,” he adds.
“I would like to express my sincerest gratitude to all the staff of the Nethersole School of Nursing for their passion in teaching and professionalism at work,” he says. “I highly recommend this programme to those in other professions who are still in pursuit of a career or for a meaning of life, because this programme has really changed my life!”

Combining in-depth study with a strong theoretical focus, the University of Hong Kong’s (HKU) Master of Arts in Literary and Cultural Studies (MALCS) provides an essential knowledge and skills base for students to cultivate their critical thinking and enhance their understanding of cultures, cinemas, and global issues.

Government has, in recent years, identified the creative industries as a priority for development, and has injected increased funding. With the progressive completion of facilities in the West Kowloon Cultural District, as well as the growing popularity of events such as Art Basel and Art Central, Hong Kong is in need of more talents in the cultural arena. In this context, HKU’s Master of Arts in Literary and Cultural Studies will engage students in a wide range of theoretical, literary and filmic texts, and explore historical and contemporary issues within frames of modernity and globalization.
After going through the rigorous program, MALCS graduate students will possess critical thinking through engagement with the key debates and texts in literary, film, and cultural studies. Their appreciation of diverse cultural practices and contexts within a global frame will be deepened.
The program also aims to develop skills in critical analysis necessary to carry out independent research in the fields of literary, film, and cultural studies. The training will also provide the knowledge and hone the skills required for advanced degrees and/or enhancement in arts, cultural writing, and other creative practices.
MALCS students are trained to see beyond the local context to understand what is happening in the rest of the world, and to examine issues with a critical eye. Graduates will be
equipped with the essential skills for careers in teaching, cultural programming, writing, research, and administrative positions.
Founded in 1994, the program has been training students to demonstrate critical thinking and analytical skills, to expand their appreciation of intercultural relations and cultural forms; and to pursue intellectual inquiry using communication skills as well as analytical skills. The program has strengthened its interdisciplinary approach informed by critical and cultural theories. Since 2017, students are encouraged to pursue either a Literary and Cultural Studies emphasis, or a Film/Screen Studies emphasis.
As Asia’s world city, Hong Kong is a wonderful platform for screen and literary studies because of her unique social, historical, and cultural connections with Mainland China and other Asian countries. Encouraging appreciation of diverse cultural contexts within a global frame and widening student’s global perspectives, the program has attracted students from a myriad of cultural backgrounds, such as the US, South America, the UK, Canada, southeast Asia, the mainland, Taiwan and Hong Kong.

HKU Linguistics is a broad and versatile programme that trains you to think about and discuss the nature of language, the human mind, as well as linguistic and cultural diversity around the globe.
With an emphasis on debate and exchange of ideas with senior researchers and peers, most of whom are from overseas, the programme aims to groom students into professionals for an array of careers – from linguistic research, language processing to computation, publishing and speech therapy.
During the one-year, full time study journey, students will have the opportunity to tackle questions at different levels, for instance, on the evolution and functioning of human language, and the relationship between language and mind.
Students look into more specific questions as they proceed: Are all languages entirely different from each other or are there some common, constant properties? How does a multilingual society like Hong Kong work around its different languages? How do dialects in China differ from the standard language and why are they spoken? How can linguistics improve the teaching and learning of languages?
Under the supervision of our international faculty students are guided through their own dissertation. Recent topics include:
• The effect of musical training on Cantonese speakers’ perception of tone in linguistic and non-linguistic contexts
• The syntax of comparative constructions in Dapeng (Taipung): a dialect between Hakka and Cantonese
• An investigation of Chinese ESL Learners’ processing difficulty in the comprehension and production of relative clauses
• Code-Mixing in Cantonese English Children from One Parent-Two Languages Families
• Investigating Acknowledgement, Attitudes, and Actions (3A) towards Language Endangerment and Maintenance Efforts: A Case of Hong Kong Cantonese
Together with challenging coursework, the dissertation component aims to not only prepare students for further research, but also strengthen their argumentation and presentation skills, as well as develop their data-management skills required in today’s over-informed world.

The first and only programme focusing on the transport policy and planning field in the city, the coveted Master of Arts in Transport Policy and Planning (MATPP) programme offered by the University of Hong Kong has gained recognition in Asia with its comprehensive and multi-disciplinary curriculum.
Tel 3917 7114Website www.matpp.hku.hk/
Co-organized by the Department of Geography, Department of Urban Planning and Design, and Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Hong Kong, the MATPP programme has been equipping professionals at the executive level with holistic training in the transport sector since its first intake in 1997.
Covering a wealth of major transportation systems, MATPP is designed for professionals who are in pursuit of professional excellence, critical intellectual inquiry and life-long learning in transportation. Through its balanced programme structure, where students have to complete a dissertation, and study seven core courses on basic knowledge and two electives covering specific areas, they will learn how to tackle novel situations and ill-defined problems, uphold professional ethics in transportation and be ready to embark on leading roles in transport policy and planning.
“Transport is about creating convenience for the human population, so our programme is designed to cover both hard and soft sciences involved in the field, with a significant focus on how students can think critically ahead from early planning to maintenance stages to come up with human-centric solutions,” says Prof. Becky Loo, Programme Director of MATPP. “We have a team of highly qualified and experienced teaching staff who are leading experts in the field to keep students abreast of the latest developments in Hong Kong and beyond.”
Well situated in Hong Kong, with its unique public transportation systems, MATPP students are also open to the systems of a diversified mix of developed and developing
countries like Chile, China, France, Singapore, the UK, and the USA to acquire an international understanding and global outlook in the industry.
“Another defining feature of our programme is that it is professionally accredited both as a CILT Accredited Programme, and RTPI Accredited Specialist Programme, which are internationally recognized, so students graduate with an extra competitive edge,” Loo adds.
Available for full-time and part-time studies, this flexibility has attracted a steady stream of students who have rich work experience in transport-related sectors like public transport companies, airline and airport businesses, government departments, and consultancy firms.
Apart from the availability of awards and scholarships to cultivate and encourage students’ academic excellence, graduates will be in touch with a strong, supportive network of alumni to keep broadening their horizons.

With career prospects being increasingly competitive today, many students are in search of opportunities that will allow them to gain not only knowledge but also an advantage for their career path, and The Education University of Hong Kong’s master programmes help them to do just that.
The MIRD is a brand new programme that provides students with advanced training in international relations and development from a comparative pan-Asian perspective, with a particular focus on the Greater China region.
The one year Programme is designed to provide students with core theoretical, conceptual and analytical tools necessary to understand contemporary Asia, focusing on the competitive dynamics impacting the region’s international relations and economic development.
“With China being increasingly influential, it is crucial that students broaden their scope and look at the Southeast Asian region as a whole and examine countries’ intricate relationships with one another.” says Kelvin Cheung, Programme Leader. “MIRD builds on the success of our previous Programme, which primarily focused on the Greater China Region, injecting new elements that improve its relevancy and comprehensiveness, giving students expert insight on the subject.”
MIRD emphasizes experiential learning with opportunities for students to engage in overseas visits in developing countries and to explore various issues related to development and economic transition. Structured to consist of both Core and Elective Courses, students may tailor the courses to explore subjects where their passions lie while still absorbing the gist of the Programme.
By contrast, MPPM is designed to train students in public management, policy analytics and public policy, providing students with key skills for careers in the public sector, not-for-profit sector (i.e. NGOs), statutory organizations, government-business relations, and in consulting firms and private sector. Offering students training in core skills associated with policy analytics, management, and policy evaluation, the Programme allows students to specialize in one of three areas (i) Governance and Public Management; (ii) Social Policy; and (iii) Higher Education Policy and Management, as well as take electives tailored to meet their vocational and career pathways.
“MPPM is an excellent programme for students seeking to develop career pathways and also for those already in the workforce who are seeking further build their professional skills and capacities. Importantly, as educators we believe in experiential and applied learning, taking students outside of the classroom and engaging them in real-life activities that add to their breadth, knowledge and readiness for employment. For example, our alumni work in a wide spectrum of industries including the government, NGOs, media, the teaching profession, the financial services sector and in research organizations.” says Lina Vyas, Programme Leader.
A unique advantage of MPPM is that it provides students with Internship opportunities, allowing students to experience work environments together with all the challenges that modern public and private organizations face. This has a number of advantageous for our students, exposing them to practical issues and allowing them to draw on their classroom learning, theoretical and analytical frameworks, and apply this in problem-solving and managerial contexts. MPPM also offers unique overseas experiential leaning opportunities where students’ are exposed to international public sector management issues and receive and engage with overseas experts through formal lectures and seminars.
“I am privileged to have had the learning opportunities provided by MPPM and the Department. This has provided me with invaluable advice, professional assistance and encouragement in my studies, personal life, and my career.” says Victor Yim, a graduate in 2015. “Not only does the Programme offer cutting-edge knowledge in relation to policies and public management around the globe, it also has an outstanding line-up of scholars who are keen to provide academic as well as personal advice to students.”

1918 Hotel & Tourism
Hospitality is one of the fastest growing and most dynamic sectors of global business that requires professionals with a
21st century skill set to stay competitive. In this very connected world, strong international perspectives and an in-depth understanding of the cultural immersion enable future leaders to adopt a holistic approach to the global hospitality business.
At the forefront of the industry, the School of Hotel and Tourism Management (SHTM) of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) has formed a unique alliance with two world-class educational centers: Lausanne Hotel School and Conrad N. Hilton College of Hotel and Restaurant Management, University of Houston, to establish the MSc in Global Hospitality Business (MGH) programme. The three institutions join hands for the first time in hopes of defining the future of global hospitality development.
The innovative and strategic tripartite programme allows students from Asia, Europe and North America to spend one semester in each of the three continents, aiming to provide students with exposure to the three distinct markets and diverse cultures as well as access to the three alumni networks. Students will be groomed to “think global, act local”.
Designed to reach the equilibrium between theory and practice experience, every year the rigorous programme offers MGH students a talented cohort from across the globe to develop their hospitable attitude and construct their management toolbox while enjoying exceptional proximity to buoyant markets and industry leaders.
Students have a chance to undertake field trips in popular destinations such as Paris, New York, Beijing and more every semester.
Additionally, multicultural teams of three to four students are formed to undertake a real-life consultancy business project assigned by industry partners, working across a span of 18 months.
A graduate of the programme, Alexandre Luis LAU MACHIAL from Portugal says,
“ B e i n g p a r t o f three of the most recognised alumni n e t w o r k s i n t h e hospitality world was a major fac tor for me in choosing this programme.”
JooJin LIM, a graduate from Korea, also lauds the structure of the programme,
“I can study in 3 continents in 3 semesters learning about different cultures and markets in the hospitality industry.”
SHTM is staffed by more than 75 academics drawn from 22 countries and regions and ranks among the top hotel and tourism schools in the world. The school has been rated No. 1 in the world in the ‘Hospitality and Tourism Management’ category according to Shanghai Ranking’s Global Ranking of Academic Subjects 2017/2018, as well as in the ‘Hospitality, Leisure, Sport & Tourism’ subject area by the CWUR Rankings by Subject 2017, and ranked among the top 3 ‘Hospitality and Leisure Management’ institutions globally in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2017/2018. SHTM is well placed to nurture students to absorb cutting-edge knowledge and develop practical skills.
London business school is finding, nurturing and supplying talent to the global business economy, says Julia Marsh,
associate dean of degree education and career center at the school.
The school ranked second this year in the field of business and management studies in the QS World University Rankings, an annual publication by Quacquarelli Symonds.
From master 's degrees in management, business administration and financial analysis to PhD programs, LBS consistently attracts elites with its research expertise and worldwide networking.
A case in point is its MBA program attended by students from different disciplines, including the military, pharmaceutical, finance, retail, consulting and technology. International students account for about 90 percent of the student population.
Flexibility is another focal point. Students can opt to complete the MBA in 15, 18 or 21 months.
The curriculum is structured. Before the start of the program, students should complete three online modules in finance, accounting and quantitative methods. Core courses include corporate finance and valuation, operations management, global leadership assessment, data analytics and microeconomics for managers.
Students can select electives in the fields of accounting, economics, finance, management science and operations, marketing, strategy and entrepreneurship, as well as organizational behavior.
Electives are offered across the full suite of LBS degree programs, enabling students to learn with others with years of insights, Marsh said.
Those who opt for the 18- or 21-month program can apply for a one-term exchange. Partner schools include the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Tsinghua University School of Economics and Management, Duke University and Georgetown University.
"Access to outstanding employment opportunities is a significant feature. Top hiring firms include McKinsey, Boston Consulting Group, Goldman Sachs, Amazon, Bain and Google,"
Marsh said.Applicants should have an undergraduate degree, preferably
several years of work experience and a GMAT test score of between 600 and 800.
"When we recruit students, we do not have just one specific type in mind. What we look for is a combination of various things such as a global mind-set and track record of achievements," she said. "But most of all we look for curiosity, openness to challenging one's self and drive to innovate."
Those with more than five years of full-time work experience should consider the EMBA-Global Asia, the university's joint program with the University of Hong Kong and Columbia Business School. The program attracts students from various industries, such as financial services, retail, IT, consulting and real estate.
Recently, the program placed second in its first entry to the annual Financial Times Executive MBA ranking, which measures academic quality, salary, career progression and others.
Executive leadership, corporate finance, marketing strategy, operations management, as well as financial and managerial accounting form part of the five-term curriculum.
A myriad of elective courses are offered at each school. Examples include behavioral economics, customer-centric innovation, managing corporate turnarounds, multinational strategy in China, as well as Asia business and economics.
"Students can study across Hong Kong, Shanghai, New York, Dubai and London, while deepening their understanding of Eastern and Western business practices and accessing cutting-edge insights from the world-renowned faculty of all three schools," Marsh said.
In the last two terms, the study location will depend on students' choices of electives.
For next May's intake, tuition is US$175,200 (HK$1.37 million). Students have until January 31 to make the first-round application. Admission is competitive and those interested are advised to apply as early as possible.

Learning about business can’t be done by simply sitting in the classroom and listening to lectures. Solely acquiring academic knowledge is not enough to start a career.
The London Business School, a graduate business institution, believes that networking is equally important as gaining
knowledge from lectures as it enables students to acquire experiences that bolster them academically and interpersonally.
“Alumni have told me that the LBS exceeded their expectations and opened their eyes,” said LBS dean Francois Ortalo-Magne.
The school provides wide diversity in terms of nationalities of students, their background and experiences. “About 90 percent of students, aged from 20 to 60, come from 109 countries, and
they have diverse backgrounds including finance, philosophy, medical and military,” said Ortalo-Magne.
“There might be three Peruvians in one classroom. But one worked in Peru his entire life, another worked in Germany and the third one worked in Sweden for a long time,” he said, adding that the number of countries where students originate does not completely reflect their wide diversity.
Students are encouraged to converse and interact with each other in classes. Ortalo-Magne believes that diversity is key to global success as the world of business moves closer and boundaries are eliminated. “Students learn how to live and grow amid global diversity. This experience gives them confidence to network around the world.”
Linkages are forged not only within the campus as they also extend into the world of business. “For instance, I once met Savio Kwan, the past president of Alibaba. He helps start-up businesses of the alumni grow. I am proud to see a successful alumnus reach out and help young alumni to become successful too,” said Ortalo-Magne.
Having alumni from across the world keeps the dean busy nearly all year round, attending alumni gatherings in different parts of the world. “There are about 90 alumni celebrations in Zurich, Paris, Tokyo, Shanghai, Dubai and everywhere,” he said.
Attendees may be locals who reside in their own city, but they may also include foreigners living in the city. Ortalo-Magne encourages alumni to use the occasions to network with people who they have not known before and hope that business plans are drawn up after the gatherings. “They know there are many
Networking is big business great people in the school and they value opportunities to get connected with each other.”
The annual gatherings demonstrate the strong bond among LBS alumni and their care for the school more than anyone does.
Annual gatherings always mean question-and-answer sessions for Ortalo-Magne, who has been serving as dean for just a year.
“Since I am the person who selects students who will be named outstanding alumni, they exert pressure on me. During the events, they ask me all sort of questions until they get tired,” he said.
The participation of alumni is not only confined to asking questions. They also conduct interviews and help select new students.
“The the first stage of interview is conducted by school staff. But in the second stage, each student is assigned to an alumnus. The alumni are trained well and they know what we are looking for,” he said.
He added that the alumni also help prospective students get prepared before joining the LBS family.
Although networking is emphasized in school, academic studies are not neglected. “Professors in the school may also be serving as consultants in marketing and in other roles in different companies,” said Ortalo-Magne.
He cited professors Andrew Scott and Lynda Gratton, authors of a best-selling book in Japan, entitled The 100-year Life. “The book helps people think what living longer means to each individual and it offers analyses and solutions on what to do with finance, education, career and relationships in order to succeed in a 100-year life. Among faculty members, they are most sought after.”
Research studies on gender, big data and entrepreneurship are being undertaken in the school.
“There is often talk nowadays about people being led by machines. One of our research studies is looking into how to lead machines and make use of explosive data in a big-data environment,” he said.
Experiential learning plays a key role in the business school. Students are given varied assignments in different parts of the world, including those related to financial technology in New York or Hong Kong and in consulting work in small enterprises in South Africa.
Student organizations also engage in projects that help enhance their learning experience.
“Last year, Bank of England used one of our student conferences to make a public statement and The Economist covered the event,” he said.
The school is especially proud of the diversity of its alumni. Prominent alumni of the school include Tony Wheeler
of the Lonely Planet and Jim Ratcliffe, who invested in the petrochemical industry and is now regarded as Britain’s wealthiest man.
Ortalo-Magne said the LBS is always keen to find those who are curious and ambitious, and who are open and willing to learn, just like its alumni.

The University of Chicago Booth School of Business is known for selecting heritage sites for its campuses. Having moved
from its Singapore campus in the House of Tan Yeok Nee along Penang Road three years ago, it has now set up its Executive MBA Asia program at a Mount Davis historic site.
The school plans to engage Hong Kong at different levels by bringing in short-term executive education and the social innovation program.
The 21-month EMBA program has been running in Hong Kong at a temporary location in Cyberport for the past four years. The new site, which holds Grade Three heritage buildings, was granted by the Education Bureau in 2013.
The Hong Kong Jockey Club University of Chicago Academic Complex | University of Chicago Francis and Rose Yuen Campus in Hong Kong started operating on a limited basis last month but it is scheduled to fully open in November.
Chicago Booth Executive MBA program's associate dean in Europe and Asia Richard Johnson, who was responsible for overseeing the relocation in 2013-14, said the move is to attract a broader diversity of students, which the school had a harder time doing in Singapore.
The plan appears to be working out. Before the relocation, around 60 percent of students were from or based in Singapore. "Now, the largest group of students in our program in Hong Kong is only around 27 percent and that's Hong Kong-based
Executive decision students. The rest of the class is made up of students from 14 other countries around Asia," he said.
Johnson added it is a general management curriculum, which is targeted at middle to senior level managers who are looking to advance their career. So the average age of students in the program is 37 with 13 years' work experience.
Students from the Hong Kong campus are expected to spend three weeks at the Chicago campus and one in London. The tuition fee of HK$1.305 million may sound a bit steep but it covers housing when they are outside Hong Kong as well as teaching materials. They are taught by the same faculty members who travel from the United States and students' admission requirements for the Hong Kong campus are exactly the same with the one as those for Chicago or London.
The new Hong Kong campus also serves as the base for paid non-degree executive education programs lasting from a few days to a week for individuals to work on a more specific topic in business.
Though there is no set entry criteria, Johnson said, "generally speaking, people have a few years of business experience." Custom-designed programs can be offered by the school to corporations that would like their employees to have a better understanding to a particular business focus they desire.

Faced with a neverending increase in human population,
food supply has always been a worldwide concern, and nowhere is that concern more intense than in academic corridors.
“It will be harder and harder to get food to dif ferent parts of the world that need it,” said Peter Stoicheff, president of the University of Saskatchewan.
“The university is providing one of the answers, developing crop varieties that are able to be grown in all parts of the world.”
Since the 1970s, the university’s crop development center has created more than 400 new varieties that are used worldwide, providing help to food providers and farmers.
Stoicheff highlighted the importance research results with reference to lentils, a source of rich protein to people, especially Indians and Turks.
“This crop has been around for a long time, but we improved the varieties and they are used around the world now,” he said.
In August, the university revealed the genetic makeup of wheat.
“It is five times more complex than understanding the human gene, and it helped to create new crops that withstand stress, drought and pests,” Stoicheff
said, describing it as a big deal in the scientific world.
The quality of th e uni ver s i t y ’s research since its establishment more than a century ago has led to it being regarded as a top research institution in Canada, with signature work in agriculture, health, water security and
synchrotron sciences.By being the home to the Vaccine and Infectious
Disease Organization, the university is providing solutions to diseases through vaccines and therapeutic technologies.
Stoicheff recalled the pork diseases in north America two years ago. “The diseases were causing piglets to die, ruining the pork industry, with almost half a billion lost.”
The organization developed a vaccine to cure the piglet diseases. “We stopped the diseases from spreading,” he said.
The university also combined health care with technology, developing its “robotic health care.”
“Most of the Canadian population is concentrated in the southern part of the country,” said Stoicheff. “In the north, there is a small community that finds it difficult to get access to health care.”
But the university has developed a way for a doctor to see a patient while sitting in his office in the south. “We use ultrasound through a robot, so that the doctor does not need to travel and, more importantly, a woman does not have to make the long, expensive trip to the south for a pregnancy check.”
Research into indigenous people is also one of those fields in which it has made its mark.
“Our Global Institute of Water is ranked the first in Canada and the 18th in the world, among all water resources research institutes, according to the academic ranking of world universities,” said Stoicheff.
The vaccine center also performs high-standard researches.
Hungry for answers
“The place can do level three containment research – level four is the highest,” Stoicheff said. “It is able to deal with some of the worst viruses and work on large animals, and is also connected with the international vaccine center.”
Being part of the U15 Group of Canadian Research Universities adds competitiveness to the university. The group undertook 80 percent of all competitive university research in Canada and strives to deliver long-term, sustainable research policies.
Stoicheff said the research facilities and the Canadian “talents-welcome” environment both contributed to make the University of Saskatchewan a research-friendly place.
“The Canadian government has developed the ‘150 research chairs’ program, designed to bring talent from all around the world to Canada.”
The program brought the leading US expert in global water issues, Jay Famiglietti, to the university’s Global Institute for Water Security this year, not to mention other talented researchers from Europe.
However, Stoicheff wants to add more people to the university’s talent pool, especially in synchrotron sciences, food and water security.
Generally, research is conducted only by master’s or doctoral students, but at the University of Saskatchewan, undergraduates are also involved.
“A quarter of all our 22,000 students from different colleges across the university have hands-on research experience, and it is going to be more, aiming for at least half the students,” Stoicheff said.
The undergraduates do research on urban planning and carry out projects with the cities in Saskatchewan, like researching the health of a river where a bridge is going to be built.
The new health building brings students from health sciences across disciplines to work on research and learn together.
