Surrey felt like a place that would do its best to help me succeed. The opportunity to work with world leading experts in health care management, and to access data and resources previously unavailable, was also very attractive.– Professor Graham Cookson

Prior to joining Surrey, Professor Cookson spent seven years in the Department of Management at King’s College London.

He read Philosophy, Politics and Economics at Somerville College, Oxford and has an MSc and PhD in Econometrics from Imperial College London, and a Pg CAP from King’s College London. An applied econometrician by training, Professor Cookson’s interests lie primarily in the economic analysis of public services and public policy, especially within health care.

Professor Cookson is a Fellow of the Royal Statistical Society where he is a Committee Member of the Official Statistics Section, and a member of the Royal Economic Society. He is an Expert Panel Member at the Ministry of Justice.

In 2013 he was awarded a £1 million Leverhulme Trust Research Leadership Award to study the measurement and determinants of productivity and performance of public sector organisations.

Programme overviewOur Health Economics programme is designed to meet the increasing demand for professionals in this field. It introduces you to the ways in which microeconomic and econometric principles and concepts can be applied to the analysis of decisions by consumers, firms and governments regarding health and health care.

You will develop an appreciation of health economics, both as an intellectual discipline and as a way of making decisions about health policy and resource distribution. You will also gain an understanding of the techniques that have been used in contemporary economic research generally and in health research and epidemiology specifically.

Building upon this, the programme will help you develop an advanced understanding of the core principles in microeconomics, quantitative methods and econometrics, and how these influence optimal health care expenditure.

Health Economics MSc

The demand for specialists in health economics continues to rise, as longer lifespans and an aging population combine with enhanced technology to raise the demand for healthcare.

The programme will also teach you how to apply techniques used in professional health evaluation to determine the appropriate mix of health interventions, as well as the appropriate analytical techniques and research methodologies that can be used in the exploration of health care decisions.

Graduates of this programme would be well suited to careers as health economists in central government and NHS trusts, as well as analysts in pharmaceutical firms and professional health economists. You will also be well placed to pursue further postgraduate research, or any career in which independent analysis and effective communication are valued.
