What the world says about the University of Exeter Business School

The teaching staff, the educational resources, the beautiful environment, the facilities and the wide range of student services are all reasons why the Business School was my preferred choice for postgraduate study.

Wenjie Li, MSc in Accounting and Finance

The Business School has a strong external focus, and is very keen to engage with businesses like ours.

Thomson Reuters

I have been impressed by the development and growth of the University of Exeter Business School over the past few years. The School is now well placed to achieve its ambitious vision of establishing itself as a leading international business school. In previous education, I was always spoken to as a student, but at the University of Exeter Business School I have felt like an individual who has potential.

Saul Greenland, MA in Tourism, Development and Policy

Our relationship with the Business School has flourished over recent years, as the calibre of its students continues to rise. For the first time this year, Ernst & Young are sponsoring the Business School Business Challenge which we see as a great opportunity for students to start developing some of the vital employability skills they will need, it also will hopefully strengthen our involvement further with the business school as well as enabling to build relationships with the students enabling them to make informed career choices.

Michelle Cowdrey, Graduate Recruitment Officer, Ernst & Young

The skills students develop throughout university shapes their employability. Our aim is to help students to understand how they can transfer these skills in to the workplace. Applicants who stand out are those who’ve done research and are well prepared. As a leading employer of graduates, we recognise the important role played by the University of Exeter Business School by encouraging students to meet local and national employers and producing high-calibre, motivated individuals who are ready to enter the world of professional services.

What our students say about the academics who teach them

Since my undergraduate studies, Alex Janes has made a huge impact on my understanding of Strategy, and business in general. His lectures consist of up-to-date theories and models, with lots of appropriate examples and he delivers them in a really enthusiastic and fun way (even using juggling balls to illustrate a point on one occasion!).Katerina Player, MSc in International Management

The staff at the Business School are very supportive. If you have any problems there’s a team of academic assistants waiting to help you to address any issues. The professors take time to really explain things to you in a clear and detailed manner.Wenjie Li, MSc in Accounting and Finance

7

A very big part of my learning experience on the MSc can been credited to the lecturers, as their enthusiasm and charisma extends all the way across the students in the programme, through their handlings with us personally and their teaching styles as a whole.Julia Ho Shan Hui, MSc in Marketing

The ‘here to help’ attitude of lecturers and professors really helps. All too often, you find academics just want to research but at Exeter they engage with you, debate and guide you in the right direction.Robert Janeiro, MSc in International Management

Meet our alumniI came to Exeter from Russia in 2007, first to study a Diploma in Management and to learn academic English, and then to do a Masters in Financial Economics.

Following my Masters I worked for Thomson Reuters on an unpaid summer internship in their Exeter offices, before joining their Commodities and Energy desk in London, where I’m working now. I work with international financial institutions across Europe and Asia, who invest in commodities and energy. Essentially, our clients use our products to follow the financial markets – and we help them do that in the most effective way to extract the information they want, whether that’s prices for oil, or sugar or gold.

For me, university was about tapping into the opportunities on offer. For example, I very much enjoyed hearing from the guest speakers, organised by the Business School. I remember once I had a chance to meet Kostya Novoselov, who won the Nobel Prize for Physics in 2010. Meetings like this widen your horizons, regardless of your professional area.

I also learnt a lot of skills at Exeter, which have come in very useful. Interacting with people from different backgrounds, being an efficient team player and networking – are all things I make use of now. I learnt to swim at Exeter too – and I also took a language course in Chinese, which was an absolutely new experience for me.

My philosophy is ‘Work hard, it will pay off in the end’. Don’t chase after money, focus on finding yourself as a professional, money isn’t an issue when you enjoy what you do. And never give up, because the cream always rises to the top.

Dmitry Pak, MSc Financial Economics (Commodities and Energy Associate, Thomson Reuters)

Student life

Our cityExeter is consistently rated as one of the best places to live in the UK. With a population of around 120,000, it is a safe, student-friendly city, with a vibrant culture and a beautiful historic setting. Plus the South West and everything it has to offer is right on your doorstep.

The city centre, which is just a short walk from the campus, is a perfect fusion of new and old. Cafés, restaurants, pubs mix with historic buildings, including the famous Cathedral, the Guildhall, Mol’s Coffee House and the Ship Inn, both favourite haunts of Sir Francis Drake and Sir Walter Raleigh.

Exeter is a great place for shopping where big names in the High Street contrast with the specialist hopping/dining area of the multi-million pound development at Princesshay, and wonderful quirky areas such as medieval cobbled Gandy Street and the historic Quayside.

Arts and music-wise, there’s loads going on. The Exeter Phoenix is a vibrant arts centre. Concerts are regularly held in the Lemon Grove on campus, and live music can also be enjoyed throughout the city in pubs, clubs and concert halls and at the large Westpoint venue.

Exeter is also a growing business centre, with many companies choosing to locate here, and relatively low unemployment. It is the main administrative centre for Devon and has a thriving retail sector.

Exeter celebrates history and embraces today... its thriving nightlife, lively cultural scene and rich history make it well worth a visit. This old city is young at heart thanks to a large student crowd and plenty of bars, clubs and cafés, especially around the revitalised quay area. Lonely Planet Guide to Great Britain

And when you want a break from town life, some of the most stunning countryside in Britain is right on your doorstep. The whole region is a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts. The wild scenery of the Dartmoor and Exmoor national parks provides an exciting challenge for hikers, climbers, horse riders and cyclists while the gentler rolling hills, rivers and attractive market towns and villages are perfect for exploring at a more leisurely pace.

The South West is a top holiday destination and as a student here, you can enjoy it all year round. Exeter is just nine miles from the coastal town of Exmouth, with its long sandy beaches and the Exe estuary perfect for sailors, swimmers, water-skiers, windsurfers and sunbathers. Surfers do have to travel a little farther from Exeter to the north Devon and Cornwall coasts, but it’s well worth it for some of the finest surfing in the UK.

All in all, being located in such a beautiful part of the world, with easy access to both city life and quiet beaches, means you can look forward to a great quality of life here.

Find out more about living in Exeter and the South West, visit www.exeter.ac.uk/undergraduate/ location/living/exeter/

The Students’ GuildAcademic studies are a big part of life here, but it is also important that you are able to relax away from your studies. The University has a very active Students’ Guild, including a Postgraduate Forum where you can share your views and opinions. Also, with over 100 societies on offer including a Postgraduate Society, you will be able to indulge your passions, have a go at new things and enjoy lots of exciting experiences.

Over 8,000 students each year join at least one society or club, making it one of the best ways to meet people. Each society is run solely for the benefit of its members, by the students themselves, just like the Guild.

Exeter is a beautiful environment to study in. Doing a Masters can be stressful, and it just makes you feel better being in such beautiful surroundings. The city is great. It’s very compact, there’s enough going on to keep you entertained but not too much to distract you. To me, it feels like the city is an extension of the university – and I’ve always felt safe here.

Subira Toppin, MSc in Finance and Investment

The facilities definitely meet my expectations, and make me feel like I’m ‘getting my money’s worth’, which is of course very important being an international student.Julia Ho Shan Hui, MSc in Marketing

Our researchThe Accounting and Finance Research Group focus on the sustainable delivery of leading-edge research across a broad range of areas within the disciplines of accounting and finance. Our research themes are: asset pricing and valuation; auditing and corporate governance; corporate finance and taxation; financial accounting and regulation; financial markets; public sector, not-for-profit and socially responsible accounting; and financial econometrics and risk management. Recent research grants have been awarded from professional bodies including the Institute of Chartered Accountants for England and Wales (ICAEW), the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the International Auditing Standards Board and the Institute for Quantitative Investment Research (UK). Our faculty members are regularly invited to advise policy makers at institutions such as the Bank of England and the Department of Work and Pensions.

Adding value to our programmesA close association with the Chartered Institute for Securities and Investment (CISI), and the CFA Institute, the global membership organisation that awards the Chartered Financial Analyst designation, means that Accounting and Finance at Exeter is positioned to align its standards with the highest level of professional excellence. The Accounting and Finance Group has an on-going programme of conferences and seminars. Over the last few years, we have initiated conferences on corporate information disclosure, the equity risk premium, pensions, mergers and acquisitions, fund management and the cost of capital and auditing. In addition, the Accounting and Finance

Group has an active weekly research seminar, with a mix of external and internal speakers, and every year students have the opportunity to go on a week long trip to Europe to visit the European Commission in Brussels and the stock exchange and Deutsche Bank offices in Frankfurt, as well as a financial organisation in Paris, giving a rare insight into how these organisations operate.

Our MSc Economics programmes are intended to deepen your knowledge and understanding of economics as an academic discipline. Each programme draws upon the internationally rated research undertaken within the department and the experience of our academics in developing economic policy at organisations such as such as the Bank of England, the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), the International Monetary Fund (IMF), and the United Nations.

A central objective of all of the programmes is to provide you with insight into the latest thinking in economics. You will attend a series of research seminars, during which you can discuss and present current research papers. You can also participate in the departmental seminars, which attract external academics and provide you with the opportunity to gain insight into current research in economics and econometrics.

A key theme of learning and research into leadership at the Business School is helping people develop the knowledge, skill and confidence to deal with the myriad challenges of contemporary organizational leadership. The School’s Centre for Leadership Studies (CLS) is a key European window onto leadership studies, development and practice, and a world-renowned source of knowledge and experience for business leaders and students alike.

The research that takes place at CLS, and the excellent teaching it informs, centres on key values: relevance, curiosity, creativity, closeness and influence. Above all we explore leadership from multiple perspectives and continually question its meaning in organisations and society. Our educational programmes are valued for their integration of academic excellence with contemporary practice – learning about leadership at the School is always rooted in direct experience.

Leadership at Exeter

The MA in Leadership and Change programme at Exeter is focused on living leadership. It is a global programme, delivered through individually coached distance learning, so that you can study anywhere at any time. Coach-tutors guide and challenge as you work through well-established and new theories of leadership, always relating them to other key organisational issues such as change and strategy. Alongside the theory, practice is centre stage – yours, your colleagues, and that of other leaders. Personal and organisational development come together in an academically respected two year part-time programme.

This is offered as a three-stage pathway to enable you and sponsoring employers to manage time and funding commitments. Enrolling initially on the Certificate, you may exit with the award of Postgraduate Certificate in Leadership and Change or, subject to satisfactory progress, you may opt to continue to the Postgraduate Diploma or MA in Leadership and Change.

The Postgraduate Certificate in Leadership and Change (60 credits) encourages you to reflect on your own leadership practice and the support you can give to other leaders. The Certificate can be tailored to suit the needs of different organisations and incorporated into customised programmes, giving you the benefits of an accredited qualification with bespoke leadership development. The Postgraduate Diploma in Leadership and Change (120 credits) builds on the Certificate and focuses on the leadership of major change processes, as well as other forms of intervention in organisational life. We aim to demonstrate how to enhance organisational effectiveness through paying attention to leadership. The Diploma is particularly suitable for employers seeking to develop the most promising leadership talent within their organisation.

The MA in Leadership and Change (180 credits) guides you through a dissertation-based structured enquiry into complex leadership questions and is especially relevant if you are aiming to become internal or external consultants.

This programme is an ideal route into management of organisations working in global markets. It draws upon substantial expertise across the School in the areas of management, international business, marketing, strategy, economics, operations, accounting and finance to give you the latest ideas in management thinking and an overview of how global organisations work today.

You can study the programme in an intensive nine-month format, or over 12 months. With both formats you study international business, marketing, operations, human resource management and accounting in the first term, and strategy and economics in the second term. If studying over nine months, you then select four options from the full range of management modules and complete in June. With the 12-month format you undertake three management options in the second term, and start preparation on a dissertation project which you continue to work on over the summer, completing in September.

The programme is equally suited to students who have a degree in an unrelated discipline as well as those who have studied management before but who wish to further their knowledge of different areas of management within an international context. In addition to top quality teaching, the School also organises dedicated careers workshops and company visits.

There is also an opportunity for students to spend one semester at our partner institution, Mannheim Business School, in Germany on the MSc International Management with European Study. Mannheim is a prestigious business school and students who study there can choose from different specialisms which complement the themes explored in the compulsory modules of the first semester.

International students should be aware that they will require a separate visa to enable them to study in Germany.
