How will I fund my studiesFinancial support is available, includingbursaries and scholarships. We offer flexiblestudy options so you can fund youreducation by fitting study around your job. Can I fit in study?Though daunting, it is possible. Manystudents fit study around work and evenfamily commitments. At the University, wetake a realistic approach to study and do allwe can to help. Nearly all our taught courseshave part-time options, while some areavailable through distance or ‘block’learning. What should I study?Postgraduate qualifications are available atdifferent levels, from PostgraduateCertificates to PhDs. You can study a taughtcourse, which involves seminars, courseworkor exams, or choose study that is entirelyresearch-based, which involves producingan original thesis from mainly independentwork. Some qualifications are delivered onbehalf of professional bodies, so you cangain a qualification that is a recognisedstandard in that profession. Find out moreon page 5.

Taught coursesOn a taught course you’ll study specificcourse materials. Our taught courses includeMaster of Science (MSc), Master of Arts (MA)and Master of Business Administration(MBA). Our specialist courses lead toPostgraduate Certificates and Diplomas, orprofessional qualifications.

Taught courses involve lectures andseminars followed by a dissertation orproject. You’ll study flexible modules andsome courses are delivered in blocks, so youcan attend University for an entire week, orat weekends every few months.

Research programmesResearch programmes involve the in-depth study of an area. You’ll report onyour findings, through a thesis (or otherapproved submission) or dissertation, andafter submission be assessed through anoral examination (viva voce). You can studyfull or part-time, and if your job is related tothe research, you could be supervised atwork and the University.

You’ll be responsible for the initiative,techniques and execution of theprogramme, and may receive training inresearch methodology plus help with yourprogress. Your research topic and proposaloutline is decided in consultation with asupervisory team who have expertise in thefield. The Faculty Research ProgrammesCommittee will also monitor your workregularly. Find out more about our reseachon page 15. There are several types ofresearch programme outlined opposite.

Masters (MA/MSc) by ResearchThis is an independent project. You’llcomplete advanced supervised research andpresent and defend your thesis via oralexamination (viva voce). The course lasts 12months full-time and 18-24 months part-time.

MPhil and PhDMPhil students submit a thesis or portfoliothat shows critical investigation and analysisof a topic. PhD students submit a substantialthesis showing independent and originalcontribution of knowledge in a chosen field.You will usually register for an MPhil/PhDand transfer to a PhD after a year. For bothqualifications, you’ll complete an oralexamination (viva voce). Full-time study foran MPhil/PhD takes 36-48 months, or 36-60months part-time. For the MPhil, full-timestudy takes 18-24 months and part-time 30-36 months.

PhD by PortfolioYou’ll submit an approved portfolio relatingto a maximum of three projects, along witha critical overview. The projects can be work-related and based on practical or theoreticalinvestigation. The overview must show therelationship between the projects. Theportfolio should demonstrate anindependent and original contributionexpected in a PhD thesis. You’ll alsocomplete an oral examination (viva voce).Part-time study takes 12-60 months.

Doctor of Business AdministrationThe Doctor of Business Administration is for research-orientated individuals insenior positions within private, public, non-profit, and health organisations. Part-time study takes 45-72 months.

We haverecently extended the ATRiuM building atour Cardiff Campus to include even morespecialist facilities. The campus allowsstudents to develop their creative work in aprofessional environment. Open study andpractice areas offer bases for students fromall our creative industries courses to workindependently or in groups, typifying thecollaborative way in which the creativeindustries work.

Pontypridd is just 10 miles from Cardiff --surrounded by green, open spaces and freshair, it’s ideal for somewhere quieter to study.Pontypridd Campus is our largest campusand consists of two sites; Treforest andGlyntaff. Our students love the communityatmosphere, and our growing studentpopulation means there are plenty ofstudent-friendly shops, pubs and restaurants.The campus also benefits from an on-sitenursery, and even a Sport Centre for thosewho want to keep fit in-between lectures.Less than 10 minutes from campus isPontypridd's £6.3m lido. Newport is the first city you reach fromEngland, which makes it the gateway toWales. The modern, developing city has astrong industrial history and is home toNewport City Campus. The best of WalesContrary to popular opinion it’s not always rainingin Wales. With countless beaches and mountainsit’s a country of extraordinary beauty, and theultimate playground for sports junkies. There areendless mountains for walking, mountain bikingand adventure, and it has one of the world’s mostspectacular coastlines – perfect for surfing andwater sports.

South Wales is one of the best places in the UK forlive sport, with national and international gamesat the Principality Stadium in Cardiff, and matchesat Rodney Parade in Newport, Cardiff Arms Parkand the Cardiff City Stadium. You’ll experience nobetter sporting atmosphere than Cardiff on aninternational rugby day!

A country rich in history, there’s always somethingto explore – from the Roman remains andamphitheatre in Newport to the many castles and ruins scattered throughout the region.

Students at Cardiff Campus enjoy anexclusive deal set up with Pure Gym andEasy Gym. Both gyms are within walkingdistance of the campus and offer studentsreduced membership rates. Students atNewport City Campus are also entitled toreduced rates with Easy Gym.

If you want to join a competitive sportsteam, we have 60 teams in the BritishUniversities & Colleges Sport (BUCS)programme. The teams range from footballand rugby to netball and golf – everyone iswelcome to tryout.

USW Sport Park is our £3.7m purpose-builtfacility close to Pontypridd Campus. It has 30acres of playing fields, strength andconditioning facilities, an analysis suite,pavilion, five floodlit pitches and two all-weather pitches.
