Book reviews

Anatomy, Regional and AppliedBy R. J. LAST. Fifth edition. Pp. xvi+925. Edinburgh andLondon: Churchill Livingstone, 1972. £8.00.

It is a pleasure to welcome yet another edition of this populartextbook of Anatomy. The book has come to be widely readby postgraduate students preparing for the Primary Fellow-ship Examinations of the Royal College of Surgeons, and itis difficult to think of any other work which deals with theirrequirements so adequately and so compactly. The book has inevitably increased in size since the first

edition, but the additional pages, particularly those devotedto osteology, have served to enhance the usefulness of thebook. As one would expect in a book which sets out to cover a

vast and detailed subject such as Human Anatomy in soshort a space, there is some imbalance in the treatment ofthe various organs and systems of the body, but instances ofthis are remarkably few.The illustrations-especially the photomicrographs-and

the production of the book generally are of a high quality. The book can be recommended, not only to those preparing

for examinations in Anatomy, but to clinicians who mayfrom time to time wish to refresh their knowledge andunderstanding of anatomical details and principles. Thebook should have a place on the shelves of every hospitallibrary.

Surgical Disorders of the Peripheral Nerves

By SIR HERBERT SEDDON. Pp. 332. Edinburgh and London:Churchill Livingstone, 1972. £8.00.

Sir Herbert Seddon is a world famous Orthopaedic Surgeon,a scholar, and a master craftsman of his art and a bookwritten by such a distinguished and well informed personcan truly be regarded as a masterwork. This is such a book.It delights as much as it informs and is an outstanding con-tribution to knowledge of trauma to the peripheral nerves. The first four chapters deal with the structure of the

peripheral nerves, the processes involved in the degenerationand regeneration of nerve fibres and to clinical and electricalmethods of examining the nerves and recording the findings. The next eight chapters deal with the common causes ofnerve injury, neurovascular and compressive damage to thenerves, other topics of nerve injuries, nerve tumours andclinical assessment of individual nerves of the upper andlower limbs. A chapter is devoted to forms of treatmentrequired apart from surgery. Indications for surgical inter-vention, practical details of exploration, suture, neurolysisand repairs of large gaps in nerve troubles are describedlucidly and with remarkable reasoning. The seventeenth andlast chapter shrewdly summarizes the results of nerve repairs.

It has been a pleasure to review this book not only becauseof the mature and masterly way in which the facts are pre-sented but because it is written by a scholar who is an

Inaddition to the title of the paper there shouldbe a 'running title' (for page headings) of notmore than 45 letters (including spaces). Thepaper should bear the name of the author(s) withtheir degrees and descriptions and of the laboratoryor research institute where the work has been carriedout. The full postal address of the principal authorshould be given as a footnote. (The proofs will besent to this author and address unless otherwiseindicated.)Arrangement. Papers should normallybe divided into:(a) Summary, brief, self-contained andembodying themain conclusions; (b) Introduction; (c) Materials andmethods; (d) Results, as concise as possible (bothtables and figures illustrating the same data will rarelybe permitted); (e) Discussion and conclusion; (f)Acknowledgments; (g) References.

References. Only papers closely related to theauthor's work should be included, exhaustive listsshould be avoided. References should be made bygiving the author's surname, with the year of publi-cation in parentheses. (1958).The 'et al.' form should always be used for works byfour or more authors. If several papers by the sameauthor and from the same year are cited, a, b, c, etc.,should be put after the year of publication, e.g.Smith et al. (1958a). All references should be broughttogether at the end of the paper in alphabetical order.References to articles and papers should mention(a) name(s) of the author(s); (b) year of publicationin parentheses; (c)* title of paper; (d) title ofjournalin full, underlined; (e) volume number; number offirst page of article. They should be marked on thebacks with the name(s) of the author(s) and the titleof the paper. Where there is any possible doubt as tothe orientation of a figure the top should be markedwith an arrow. Each figure must bear a referencecorresponding to a similar number in the text.Photographs and photomicrographs should be un-mounted glossy prints and should not be retouched.Line diagrams should be on separate sheets; theyshould be drawn with black Indian ink on whitepaper and should be about four times the area of thefinal reproduction. Lines and lettering should be ofsufficient thickness and size to stand reduction toone-half or one-tiird. Letters and numbers must bewritten lightly in pencil. Whenever possible, theoriginals of line diagrams, prepared as describedabove, should be submitted and not photographs. The legends of all the figures should be typed to-gether on a single sheet of paper headed 'Legendsto Figures'.Tables. There should be as few tables as possible andthese should include only essential data; the datashould not be crowded together. The main headingshould be in capitals with an Arabic number, e.g.TABLE 2. Each table must have a caption in smallletters. Vertical lines should not be used.
