The general pathology program at the University of Calgary is leading the way for the future of general pathology in Canada. We are the first program in the country to offer training in pathology informatics, an evolving field of growing importance as health care becomes increasingly technology based. Just as general pathologists act as an interface between clinicians and the laboratory, we need physicians who can liaise with the IT world to achieve optimal results at the front lines of patient care.

Our program is working closely with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons to move general pathology forward, and I’m excited for the unique opportunity to be part of shaping my own specialty.

RESIDENCY TRAINING IN CANADA’S MOST ENTERPRISING CITYThe Postgraduate Medical Education program at the University of Calgary currently oversees the education and training of 950 medical residents, clinical fellows and international trainees, and almost 300 visiting elective residents in 62 specialty and sub-specialty residency training programs.

Training takes place in a variety of clinical and academic settings situated in five Calgary hospitals with collaborative relationships in metro and rural settings.

Programs vary in length from two to eight years, have independent curricula and are separately accredited according to Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and College of Family Physicians of Canada mandated requirements.
