As a junior general surgery resident, I became interested in a career as a trauma surgeon-scientist. A number of questions arise based on clinical observations during residency training and a major advantage of combining your clinical training with research work is the ability to refine these questions and think deeply about the problem. This type of self-reflection during a time of rapid learning is truly invaluable.

Dr. Derek Roberts MD, General Surgery; Chief Resident, Clinician Investigator Program

CLINICIAN INVESTIGATOR PROGRAMThis intensive research training program allows residents to build a foundation in clinical and translational research by pursuing a graduate degree as part of residency training. Research options are varied and are tailored to complement specialty or sub-specialty residency training.

DELVING DEEPER INTO CLINICAL RESEARCH

Specially designed to control the bleeding of patients with severe trauma, the Interventional Trauma Operating Room at Foothills Medical Centre (pictured above) is only the second of its kind in the world.

Medical residents trained at the

University of Calgary are creating the

future of health care in Alberta, across

the country and around the world.

By attracting first-class clinicians and

researchers to the city, the Cumming

The general pathology program at the University of Calgary is leading the way for the future of general pathology in Canada. We are the first program in the country to offer training in pathology informatics, an evolving field of growing importance as health care becomes increasingly technology based. Just as general pathologists act as an interface between clinicians and the laboratory, we need physicians who can liaise with the IT world to achieve optimal results at the front lines of patient care.

Our program is working closely with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons to move general pathology forward, and I’m excited for the unique opportunity to be part of shaping my own specialty.

Dr. Launny Faulkner MD, General Pathology

LEARN MOREThe general pathology residency program at the University of Calgary offers the first elective in Canada in pathology informatics, giving residents the opportunity to train in informatics as it applies to the lab.

A NEW TECHNOLOGY INTERFACE

SMALL TOWNS AREN’T SLEEPY FOR HEALTH PROFESSIONALSRural medicine allows you to challenge yourself and your skills over the broadest scope possible in medicine. You have fewer resources than in the city, both clinical and in terms of personnel so you learn to adapt. It prepares you to walk into your first day as an attending with more confidence, not that you know more but that you can handle the unexpected.

I had 40 weeks in my rural sites and got to be a part of full service care: family practice, emergency, long term care, inpatients, anesthesia and obstetrics. There is no algorithm for what might walk or roll through your door and that keeps it exciting.

Dr. Wendy Pitchko MD, Family Medicine, Drumheller, Alberta

RURAL MEDICINERural physicians are in high demand across the country. To help fill this gap, the University of Calgary is changing perceptions about what life as a rural doctor is really like.

RESIDENCY TRAINING IN CANADA’S MOST ENTERPRISING CITYThe Postgraduate Medical Education program at the University of Calgary currently oversees the education and training of 950 medical residents, clinical fellows and international trainees, and almost 300 visiting elective residents in 62 specialty and sub-specialty residency training programs.

Training takes place in a variety of clinical and academic settings situated in five Calgary hospitals with collaborative relationships in metro and rural settings.

Programs vary in length from two to eight years, have independent curricula and are separately accredited according to Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and College of Family Physicians of Canada mandated requirements.
