Tuition fee discounts

All students • 2% discount if you pay your annual fees in full before the end of registration week.

• 20% discount for eligible Newcastle University alumni.

Awards, bursaries and prizes

All students Support to help meet some of the additional costs associated with studying specific programmes. Non-repayable, they can be awarded by a variety of organisations, including charities and trusts.

Loans

Home students* Postgraduate Master’s Loan: for eligible students studying taught and research Masters’ courses (eg MA, MSc, MRes, LLM, MBA). Postgraduate Doctoral Loan: for eligible students studying doctoral degrees (eg PhD, EdD).

Both loan schemes are administered by the Student Loans Company.

Scholarships

Home students* Funded or partially funded scholarships often based on academic merit or specific eligibility criteria. Non-repayable, they can be awarded by a variety of organisations, including private companies, professional organisations, charities, trusts and the UK government.

Studentships

All students Funded PhD opportunities will normally have a fixed project title and named supervisor. Funding can be awarded by charities, commercial organisations and most commonly by the UK’s Research Councils. It is possible to complete a studentship in an academic school or via a Doctoral Training Centre or Doctoral Training Partnership.

CAREERS SUPPORTSTART UP Founderships: Johnson’s story

Alumnus and clean-tech company founder, Johnson, is on a mission: to connect homes and save energy.

That dream began when he launched Equiwatt, supported by the START UP Founderships scheme. And it took another huge step forward when the company secured over £300,000 in investment to progress its plans to scale-up.

Equiwatt was born out of Johnson’s experiences growing up in India where regular power outages are commonplace.

An intelligent energy management platform, Equiwatt tracks household energy consumption, automatically switching off devices to save energy during peak times when electricity supply is inefficient or expensive.

Consumers are rewarded for cutting their energy use, while Equiwatt estimates that for every 1,000 households using its app, 250 tonnes of carbon dioxide are offset each year.

To launch the business, Johnson worked with a START UP adviser during his PhD in electrical and electronic engineering to prepare a business plan and carry out market research for Equiwatt.

As part of our START UP Founderships programme, he received six months’ funding, intensified business mentoring and was supported to navigate the complexities of setting up a business in the UK.

He said: ‘The engineering and project management skills I needed for my business I got from my degree, but the Founderships scheme gave me the platform to become an entrepreneur.

‘Founderships is a business incubator scheme that helps you gain the skills you need – it gives you the right foundations, then it’s up to you to take your idea to higher and higher levels.’

Arrival and induction

You’ll arrive at your accommodation and register as a student. The first week is spent familiarising yourself with campus and meeting academic colleagues and fellow students.

Induction includes a comprehensive overview of our facilities, IT support, and Student and Wellbeing services. Academic school and subject inductions will help you settle in to your new learning environment. ncl.ac.uk/pre-arrival

Spring term

You will start to tailor your study to a particular field of interest, with many courses offering optional modules. During the Easter vacation (around April) you will prepare for formal assessment in May/June.

Autumn term

Timetabled courses run through the Autumn term. You will generally study compulsory modules, building core skills and knowledge in your chosen subject. During a busy first term, we will support you to make the transition to postgraduate study. You’ll break for the Christmas vacation, but typically work across the holiday period preparing for exams and written assessments in January.

Graduation normally takes place in December, when you’ll celebrate your postgraduate success with friends and family on our beautiful campus.

Summer term

Timetabled elements of your course reduce as you focus on your research project/dissertation. You’ll access ongoing support via our research study skills modules and expert academic supervision, submitting your research project/dissertation around August/September.

Course overview

Awards: the most common are Master of Science (Msc), Master of Arts (MA) and Master of Business Administration (MBA).

Entry requirements: 2:1 at Bachelor’s level, or equivalent.

Duration: 12 months full-time. Part-time and flexible study available.

Start date: usually September; a small number start in January.

Teaching style: lectures, seminars, group work and (depending on subject choice) lab-based sessions, technical skills development and practicals. You will be encouraged to apply your own ideas through in-depth reading and analysis.

Assessment: exams, essays, presentations, group work or combination of all these elements. You will also typically complete a research project or final dissertation of 15,000–18,000 words.

Credits: typically 120 credits of taught modules and a 60-credit dissertation or research project.

TEACHING EXCELLENCEMaster’s level study: Taka’s story

For Taka there are no limitations to what she feels able to achieve following her MBA at Newcastle.

‘At Newcastle, I’ve been encouraged to think outside of the box; to really stretch myself,’ she said.

‘I’ve learned to be creative and innovative in how I respond to any issue in front of me.’

Taka was working for a financial services company in her home country of Nigeria when she decided to pursue an MBA.

She said: ‘It was a really hard decision for me to go back to being a student, but I had strong plans for my life – goals and dreams that I wanted to fulfil.

‘I knew I wanted to study in the UK, so I shortlisted the top universities and Newcastle was in that mix right from the start.’

Taka was awarded a Women in Leadership scholarship by Newcastle University Business School. Aimed at supporting women in business to become influential leaders, the award reflects the University’s commitment to equality and diversity.

Newcastle Business School is among the world’s elite business schools, triple accredited by AACSB, EQUIS and AMBA. For Taka, the outstanding aspect of her course was the quality of teaching she received.

‘I knew I wanted to be part of a business school where I could develop the personal relationships that would help me throughout my time away from home – relationships with my professors, with my cohort.

When we have received and considered your application, a formal letter will be sent to you/your agent by email informing you of our admissions decision.

What next?

Conditional offer: if you receive a conditional offer, you will need to work towards meeting the conditions of your offer, so that your application becomes unconditional. Documents relating to your offer can be scanned and uploaded online via the Apply to Newcastle Portal.

Unconditional offer: when your offer is unconditional you may need to pay a deposit or provide proof of sponsorship before we can confirm your place. If you need to pay a deposit, information on how to pay the deposit will be included in your official offer letter. You can pay online via the Apply to Newcastle Portal.

Confirmation of your place

When you have met all of the conditions of your offer (and paid your deposit if required), you will receive a ‘Confirmation of Place’ email. RESEARCH EXCELLENCEPhD research: Fulvio’s story

PhD research student Fulvio is helping tackle one of the biggest challenges of the 21st century – climate change.

After completing a Master’s degree in structural engineering in Milan, followed by a year working in industry, Fulvio moved to Newcastle to do a PhD in Civil Engineering (Water Resources).

He said: ‘I was really motivated to come to Newcastle because I was really interested in the work. I have found all the structure and opportunity I was looking for here.’

Working within the School of Engineering, Fulvio is contributing to the cutting-edge research of the University’s Water Group – an academic group which works to make our coasts, cities and infrastructure safer and more sustainable for future generations.

His research will help optimise flood emergency management, improving the efficiency of a city’s emergency response during a flooding disaster.

He said: ‘When a natural disaster occurs – and due to climate change these are going to occur more frequently, and their impact be more severe – if you have optimised your emergency response, you can optimise your resources and be more sustainable.

‘If your systems are resilient enough, you spend less on resources during a disaster and your city returns to normal much quicker.’

Fulvio has been using the Humber estuary as proof of concept, but also got the opportunity to develop a further case study while on a five-month placement at the University of Auckland in New Zealand.

He said: ‘This was a chance to further international research exchanges among PhD students and early careers researchers and an opportunity to create new connections and build an international network between the two universities.

‘And that is the amazing thing about Newcastle University – if you expose yourself to these opportunities it is absolutely the right place to be.

‘I have been inspired by the people around me and I have had the feedback and support that has left me free enough to develop my own pathway.’

ENGLISH LANGUAGEEnglish doesn’t need to be your first language to succeed at postgraduate level – our language support will give you the foundations you need to achieve great things.

Before you begin your studies

If you are not a native English speaker, or if you are a Student Route visa application student, you will need to show that you have adequate knowledge of written and spoken English.

For direct entry to a Newcastle University course, you will typically need an overall IELTS score of 6.5 (or equivalent), but some courses may ask for a higher level of English language proficiency.

Student Route visa application students also need to demonstrate proficiency at level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. This is equivalent to at least IELTS 5.5 in reading, writing speaking and listening. gov.uk/student-visa/knowledge-of-english

English language tests are normally valid for two years from the date the test was taken to the start of your course.
