Are you as a strategic planner concerned about the long-term future? Would you like to possess the tools and understanding to make better, more informed and sensible decisions about the future, and embrace that to make decisions about the future operations of your organisation? Are you particularly concerned about making Africa a better place and are you planning for changes in Africa? USB’s cluster of postgraduate programmes in Futures Studies – postgraduate diploma, MPhil and PhD – have been designed to assist you in achieving these goals.

There are not many programmes in Futures Studies on a postgraduate level in the world. In fact, USB’s programmes are the only ones presented in Africa. Presented in collaboration with Stellenbosch University’s Institute for Futures Research (IFR), these programmes will equip you with a toolkit of concepts and ideas, and techniques that can be used to both measure and create a desired future. The IFR has more than 40 years of experience in researching the future. The Institute currently shares this research with more than 100 clients.

Course participation is made as convenient as possible. The programmes are delivered as blended learning. This means you have a choice of either attending classes on campus or, alternatively, logging in and participating online by downstreaming the classes on your own internet-linked device. For the Postgraduate Diploma in Futures Studies, there is one compulsory on-campus block at the start of the programme, followed by weekly four-hour sessions for about 25 weeks during the course of the academic year.

USB’s one-year Postgraduate Diploma in Futures Studies is designed to expose you to:• The nature of global change, its rapid pace and its ever-increasing complexity• An understanding of the forces and trends that shape the future• Managing organisational strategies so as to create a desired future.

In addition to learning about the tools required to measure the future, you will encounter ways and means of making a more desired future. Indeed, this is the spirit that drives Futures Studies – we can, if we so wish, conspire to co-create the future we want. This qualification is therefore aimed at those people in organisations who wish to enhance their understanding of possible changes in their long-term future and their ability to respond accordingly. This is particularly important for the development of a growing number of like-minded and open-minded citizens and institutions capable of displaying a holistic understanding of the social, ethical, political, technical and economic forces shaping the future.

As the only programme of its kind presented in Africa, and one of only a few in the world, it equips candidates with high-level competencies to react meaningfully to growing complexity in the organisational environment while taking into account the unique developmental challenges facing Africa and South Africa. These challenges typically include health deficits, education deficits, global participation and human security.

If you are a strategist, managing director, CEO or involved in strategic planning, this Postgraduate Diploma in Futures Studies will give you a unique advantage in the industry. It will also enable you to play a significant role in creating a better future for South Africa and for Africa.

Additional information

Study visa requirements for international students

All residential students who are non-South African citizens and are studying at USB require a study visa. Prospective students should contact their nearest South African Foreign Mission (South African Embassy, Consulate or High Commission), normally in their country of origin, to enquire about the requirements for study visas for South Africa. Applicants are required to present themselves in person so that biometric data may be captured.

Students from West Africa can also contact USB’s representative for this region in Nigeria while students from East Africa can contact USB’s representative for this region in Kenya. (See contact details at the back of the brochure.) All international students can contact the USB International Office for assistance at [email protected].

All international students must hold a valid visa for their intended activity prior to entering South Africa.

Additional information for foreign students

Also note the following:

• Obtaining a study visa from the South African authorities takes approximately 10 to 12 weeks from the date of application. However, some missions may process applications sooner. Sufficient time should be allowed for study visa applications to be processed.

• Your study visa application should include a copy of the letter offering a place on the USB programme that you are applying for. This letter will be provided by USB’s Academic Administration once the application has been approved. A place on the programme must be confirmed before a study visa application can be considered by the South African Department of Home Affairs. Students should not proceed to Stellenbosch University or USB without a valid visa.

• Although applicants are expected to determine exactly what they require to apply for a study visa, they can expect to have to provide the following, among others: a police clearance certificate, proof of medical insurance recognised in South Africa, a radiological report, a medical certificate, proof of sufficient funds, and an admission letter from USB. Your nearest South African Foreign Mission will be able to advise in this regard. The onus falls on the student to make sure that he/she submits a complete application pack.

• All documents should be certified and translated into English before submission (in order not to delay the outcome of the application).

Payment of programme fees

International students need to pay a deposit of 50% of the annual programme fees by acceptance to the programme and the balance prior to, or upon registration.

This programme will give you the tools

and understanding to make better future- orientated decisions.

Each module shaped us into

foresight practitioners who are comfortable

working across disciplines to seek

positive future options.

Doris Viljoen

The PGD in Futures Studies – meeting new thinking partners

My name is Catherine Doris Viljoen. Drivers and indicators of change have always fascinated me. In 2008 I started my own consulting business, DV Consulting, where I work and think with business leaders about the long-term futures of their organisations.

I’ve always tried to keep a balance between academia and consulting. I believe the one cannot exist without the other. My consulting work made me realise that it is one thing to take financial figures and project these, but it felt like something was missing. That’s how I found out about the Futures Studies programme that USB offers.

In my class there were lots of other people who had Master’s degrees and even two with doctorates, but never did it feel as if we took a step down having to start with the PGD first. It was the most enriching experience and I felt at home right from the start.

The content and the expert facilitators of each module seem to have been carefully selected to shape us into foresight practitioners who are comfortable working across disciplines to seek positive future options.

What made the experience extra special was the absolutely amazing group of people in my class. We shared notes, fears, insights and lots of laughs. I now have a lot more thinking partners.

The MPhil in Futures Studies – gaining the skill of discernment

The PGD prepared me for the deep levels of thinking required on the MPhil. The interaction with experts in the field of Futures Studies continued during my Master’s – it was a privilege to be surrounded by these gurus.

For me this was a very rich experience due to the emphasis on sustainability because I really believe we cannot do business without a strong focus on social engagement.

The MPhil equipped me with the skills of what the world needs now and going forward – the skill of discerning between noise and those things that are really important. Only then you can make sense of the remaining important factors and make meaningful plans for the future. No matter on what level of management you are, working in a big corporate or starting your own entrepreneurial venture, this is the type of thinking we need all over the world.

The programme has equipped me with a whole new kit of tools to work with when I engage with my clients. While continuing my consulting work I’m also now doing my dream job after completing the MPhil – working as a senior futurist at the Institute for Futures Research, the first and only futures institute of its kind on the African continent.

PhD in Futures Studies – exploring the possibilities

I am currently writing my research proposal to undertake a PhD. There is also the possibility of publishing a book in the future – a “Futures 101” foresight toolkit for decision-makers.
