He was born in 1871. After finishing his early education he enrolled the Mercer University in Georgia when he was 17 as a sophomore. He was very successful and graduated second in his class. Then, he completed one year graduate study in math and physics at john Hopkins University. He was awarded M.A. degree in Hopkins University because of his study. Then, he turns back to Mercer and began to work as a math teacher in Blakely. At the same time he took some courses about education in Rock College. He turned back to John Hopkins University three years later and continued to his work. He also worked in a high school as a teacher and principle. Meanwhile, he married and he had three children. In 1909, he got a part time appointment at teachers college. In 1912 he earned his doctorate degree. Three years later he appointed associated professor and in 1918 he became a full professor in the university. After that he gave several lectures in different universities such as at the University of Georgia, the University of Kentucky, the University of Minnesota, the University of North Carolina, Northwestern University, the University of the South, and Stanford University.
