8/12/2019 Postdoc Position in KAUST
1/1
King Abdullah University of Science and Technology
Postdoctoral position available in
Numerical Modeling of Combustion
with application to Electric Field Effects on Laminar Flames
The Reactive Flow Modeling Laboratory within the Clean Combustion Research Center (CCRC) at
KAUST has a postdoctoral position on numerical modeling of combustion available starting
immediately. The position will remain open until filled.
Project description: The project aims at developing and validating a suitable numerical approach for the
simulation of steady and unsteady effects of electric fields on laminar flames. As part of the project, the
post doctoral appointee will be expected to implement the numerical approach in a working code that
solves for the coupled transport of reactive species as well as for the electric field. The project will
emphasize numerical code development rather than model building. The appointee will work in an
interdisciplinary team with expertise in combustion, chemistry and fluid mechanics. As part of his/her
postdoctoral tenure, the appointee is expected to assist with the supervision of a graduate student.
Qualifications: A successful candidate must have a PhD in engineering with emphasis in the area of
fluid mechanics, numerical combustion. Alternatively, a PhD in applied mathematics or applied physics
with emphasis in the area of numerical methods for PDEs are also suitable. Extensive experience in
code development for the solution of fluid flow transport equations is a requirement given the nature of
the project.
Appointment period: Two year appointment.
Salary and benefits: USD 50,000 to 90,000 12-month stipend, depending on qualifications and seniority.
Free housing, medical, dental and life insurance, air transportation to KAUST, one round-trip airline
ticket per year to visit home country for postdoc and his/her spouse and children, residing in Kingdomof Saudi Arabia. No income tax is paid in Saudi Arabia.
Application: Applications will be reviewed until the position is filled. Send (i) a detailed academic CV;
(ii) a research statement; (iii) contacts of three referees; and (iv) three articles in electronic format to the
CCRC Executive Secretary, Ms. Linda Sapolu ([email protected]).
About the Clean Combustion Research Center: The Clean Combustion Research Center conducts
basic and applied research in the field of combustion. Topics of interest include: fuel formulation, oxy-
fuel combustion, carbon capture, turbulent combustion, laser diagnostics, soot formation, sprays, flame-
based nanoparticle synthesis, turbulent aerosols, and novel combustion concepts. The CCRC research
program synergistically combines experimental and computational approaches.
In addition to experimental facilities, the CCRC disposes of several engineering grade workstations, a
dedicated cluster, and it has access to campus wide computational resources, including Linux clusters
and Shaheen, a IBM Blue Gene/P system capable of 222 Teraflops (currently ranked second in
academia and fourteenth worldwide). The center also holds licenses for a wide array of software suites.
