Connecting with each otherHellen Keller, well known American author, activist once said,

“The best and the most beautiful things in the world cannot be seenor even touched. They must be felt with the heart”

In todays’ world when many of us are living somewhat roboticlifestyle which is devoid of deeper meaning and purpose and hasbecome somewhat visionless and passionless, are we displaying emo-tions towards each other or towards our society?

There is an apparent decline of empathy in society today. Emo-tions critically influence all aspects of our lives, from how we live, work, learn and play, to the decisions we make, big and small. Emo-tions drive how we communicate and connect with each other, andimpact our health and well-being. Human emotional intelligence (oryour EQ) is our ability to recognize not only our own emotions butalso those of other people, and to use emotions to guide our behav-iour, adapt to different environments and achieve our goals.

Today, we are living in a digital world and are surrounded by lotsof hyper-connected systems, smart devices and advanced AI (artifi-cial intelligence) systems. In other words, lots of IQ, but no EQ.That’s a problem. Just look at how we use our mobile devices andinteract with intelligent agents such as Siri and Amazon’s Alexa anddo not interact with human beings.

People have less time to reflect on anything as they become dom-inated by a need to act, a need to be online, robotically always check-ing. Instead of enhancing close bonds, technology has facilitatedavoidance of direct person-to-person contact, which takes too muchtime. We maintain the illusion that we are connected more closelythan ever by the number of Facebook “likes” we accumulate. Oursense of connection exists in the action, not an accumulated, deep-ening experience. It is not unusual to see all the family membersbusy on their phones while dining out. Even at home each one ishooked on to their mobiles checking aimlessly the various posts onsocial media.

Getting rid of technology is not the answer, but society must finda balance. Empathy is very valuable, maybe the most valuable re-source for humanity. There is a need to introspect and ask few ques-tion from ourselves: Do we spend more then an hour a day on anysocial media platform? Are we constantly in a reactive state, whichprevents us from listening to others? Do we look at our phone whenwe are in a conversation with another? Do we answer calls at thedinner table or other valuable family moments? Do we find ourselveschoosing to text instead of having a conversation? Are we havingconversations over text or email that should be done in person? Ifwe have answered yes to any of these questions, then we certainlyhave an imbalance.

As much as we may appreciate modern technology, there is nodenying the fact that it has changed our ability to communicate onmany levels. Communication is becoming a lost art and it is failingmiserably at the hands of our children.

Social media has many advantages, but there are plenty of draw-backs as well. I believe that many people in our world use Face-book and Twitter as a hiding space. Sitting behind the screen of acomputer or phone gives people the courage to say what they wantwithout a filter or compassion. Our emotional intelligence is gettinglost in translation and we are slowly losing the ability to be honestwith each other and work through difficult conversations; to take amoment and sit with a situation, even when it feels uncomfortable, and move toward communication to solve the problem.

Set some family phone rules. Start with some simple limitations, such as only using Facebook on the weekend or certain timesthroughout the day. Respond to all texts or emails periodicallythroughout the day (three times, say). Ask that no phones be onthe dinner table or when you are out to eat.

Enjoying the gifts that come with technology is important, butmoving forward into a new age with balance is even more impor-tant. Maybe the biggest cost we’ve encountered already is theharm to human relationships. A small start is our best next stepand it counts.

By Dr. Neel

Many parentscome expressing theirserious concern thattheir child is introvertand the child mustchange as they feel be-ing introvert will maketheir child a failure inlife.

I would like tothrow deeper insightsso that parents candeal their childrenmore effectively. Mydeep research indi-cates there are manytypes of introverts. In-trovert nature is notunderstood rightly. Some key inputs tohelp them are as fol-lows:1. Introvert by Nature:• Many in this

world are intro-verts by their verybasic nature. Thisnature may re-main lifelong.

• If from birth yourchild avoids social-ising, then do nottry to change thechild. Understandthat being an intro-vert is not negativefrom any angle. It’sa common miscon-ception that intro-verts can’t achievehappiness and suc-cess in life.

• Parents feel thattheir introvertchild must be ex-posed to variousactivities, mustparticipate, mustbe a public speakeretc. etc. This iswrong. Please ac-cept and respect thebasic nature ofchild.

• Many of the topprofessionals fromvarious fields arehighly introvertwhich proves thatbeing introvert hasnothing to do withlife success or

Understanding Introvert Childrenstruggles.

• Never compare themwith other childrenwho are extrovertsand seemingly doingbetter.

• Comparison hurtsthem the most anddemotivates. Itmakes them feel thatthey are inadequateand worthless.Though unintention-ally parents, teachersand relatives end updamaging their men-tal health by compar-ing.

• Parents should ex-press their love by allmeans by expressingthat they are wonder-ful and that theyneed not do thingsthey don’t like.

• Help children tochoose a career inwhich expressionsand interactions withpublic or in any un-comfortable platformare not required.

• If they are forcedwith such career op-tions, then I haveseen without excep-tions that the duringthe growth period thechild loses self-re-spect and even getsinto deep depression.

• They must be helpedwith career optionsthat are aligned withtheir natural natureof being.

2. Introvert because of anevent an accident ortrauma:

a. When a child is notprovided with timelyhelp after a traumat-ic experience then itbecomes very diffi-cult for the child tocope up with innerhurts which leadsthe child withdraw-ing from normal be-haviour and is la-belled as tantrum be-haviour or introvert.

b. If the introvert be-haviour is a sudden

development, thenplease never ne-glect it.

c. Take professionalhelp immediatelyas invariably thechild has gonethrough a traumaor mental healthissue. The childmust go throughsystematic healingprocess to rediscov-er self.

d. Do not compro-mise, compare andunderstand thatthe child must befeeling highly vul-nerable.

e. Feeling of vulnera-bility makes themthink that “if Ishare my traumat-ic experience thenI may be exposed,or I may be put intomore difficulty”.This makes manychildren not to openup.

Summary:

• Dear parents ifyour child is intro-vert by naturesince birth thenplease bless andlove the child. Theyare divine blessingsin your life.

• Every child isunique and is bornwith great poten-tial, great capabili-ties and limitlesspossibilities.

• If the child has be-come introvert be-cause of an event, then seek profes-sional help withoutdelay. Wonderfultools are availableto make these chil-dren comfortableand get them backto their originalnature and blissfullife.Let’s bless all chil-

dren as they are bornto WIN. Professionalgrooming and mentor-ing can go a long wayin helping.

Diphtheria in Children

By Dr. Kishore Kumar

Diphtheria is an in-fectious disease causedby a bacterium -Corynebacterium diph-theria. It is highly con-tagious and deadly dis-ease, first described byHippocrates in the fifthcentury BC, andthroughout historydiphtheria has been aleading cause of death, primarily among chil-dren. The diphtheriabacterium was firstidentified in the 1880sby F. Loeffler, and theantitoxin against diph-theria was later devel-oped in the 1890s. Thefirst diphtheria toxoidvaccine was first pro-duced in the 1920smany countries havebeen vaccinating theirpopulation for over 70years that many west-ern countries genera-tions have grown with-out having seen Diph-theria.

The last case of diph-theria in Denmark wasdiscovered in December1988, but outbreaks arestill seen in countrieswith low vaccinationrate. There is generalconsensus that the com-plete eradication of thedisease in western

countries is due to thevaccine programs. Butin India, we still seedeaths due to diphthe-ria, almost a forgottendisease in the west.

It spreads and oc-curs very quickly andmainly affects the noseand throat. Childrenunder 5 and adults over60 years old are partic-ularly at risk for con-tracting the infection. This disease primarilyinfects the throat andupper airways, and pro-duces a toxin affectingother organs. It is a se-rious bacterial infectionthat spreads easilyfrom one person to an-other. Diphtheria canbe of two types - Respi-ratory diphtheriawhich affects thethroat, nose, and ton-sils and Skin (cutane-ous) diphtheria - Thistype affects the skin.

Symptoms

The illness has anacute onset and themain characteristicsare sore throat, low fe-ver and swollen glandsin the neck. The diph-theria toxin causes amembrane of dead tis-sue to build up over thethroat and tonsils, making breathing andswallowing difficult. The condition is typical-ly spread through per-son-to-person contact orthrough contact withobjects that have thebacteria on them, suchas a cup or used tissue. You may also get diph-

theria if you’re aroundan infected personwhen they sneeze, cough, or blow theirnose. Even if an infect-ed person doesn’t showany signs or symptomsof diphtheria, they’restill able to transmitthe bacterial infectionfor up to six weeks af-ter the initial infection.

The bacteria mostcommonly infect yournose and throat. Onceyou’re infected, the bac-

teria release dangeroussubstances called tox-ins. The toxins spreadthrough your blood-stream and often causea thick, gray coating toform in these areas ofthe body- nose, throat, tongue and airways.

Signs of diphtheriaoften appear within twoto five days of the infec-tion occurring. Somepeople don’t experience

any symptoms, whileothers have mild symp-toms that are similar tothose of the commoncold.

Prevention andVaccination

Diphtheria is com-pletely preventablewith the use of vac-cines. Vaccinationagainst diphtheria hasreduced the mortalityand morbidity of diph-theria dramatically, however diphtheria is

still a significant childhealth problem. Onceaffected, treatment in-volves administeringdiphtheria antitoxin toneutralize the effects ofthe toxin, as well as an-tibiotics to kill the bac-teria. Immunization fordiphtheria is accom-plished with a toxoid (amodified version of thediphtheria toxin).

Diphtheria toxoid is

not given as a singleinjection, but rather iscombined with tetanustoxoid and, often, per-tussis vaccine in apreparation calledDTPw, Tdap, DTaP,Td, or DT. The DTPvaccine is administeredin a series of five shots. It’s given to childrenfrom the following agegroups – 6 weeks, 10weeks, 14 weeks, 15 to18 months and 4 to 6years. WHO recom-mends a 3-dose prima-ry vaccination serieswith diphtheria con-taining vaccine fol-lowed by 3 booster dos-es.

The primary seriesshould begin as early as6-week of age with sub-sequent doses givenwith a minimum inter-val of 4 weeks betweendoses. The 3 boosterdoses should preferablybe given during the sec-ond year of life (12-23months), at 4-7 yearsand at 9-15 years of age.Ideally, there should beat least 4 years betweenbooster doses. For vari-ous reasons, the cover-age of diphtheria vac-cine in India is very lowand not 100%. Hencesporadic cases of diph-theria happens now andthen, affecting childrenresulting in mortality(deaths). Hence Karna-taka government hastaken steps to boostchildren’s immunity –on similar lines like“Pulse Polio” to help

eradicate this diseasesooner rather than lat-er. It is high time pub-lic is educated about theimportance of vaccine,so that we can elimi-nate this deadly diseasesimilar to many Euro-pean countries.

Parenting Tips1) Diphtheria and tet-

anus is highly pre-ventable disease byvaccination. Theonly way to preventlosing a child ordeath is by vaccina-tion.

2) Vaccination is avail-able FREE of cost inall government hos-pitals.

3) Whether it is DTPwor DTPa it doesn’tmatter as long asthe child gets therequired booster dos-es.

4) Most parents caneither use theirsmart phones or theapp to remind themabout their vaccina-tion.

5) Anti vaccinationgroups in Europehave gone for near-ly 7 to 8 decadeswithout seeingthese diseases intheir life due to vac-cinations in theircountries since 1920and is not applicableto India where thedisease is still en-demic.

The writer is Chairman andNeonatologist – Cloud-nine Group of Hospitals,Bengaluru

The most visible and common symptom ofdiphtheria is a thick, gray coating on thethroat and tonsils. Other common symptomsinclude:• a fever• chills• swollen glands in the neck• a loud, barking cough• a sore throat• bluish skin• drooling• a general feeling of uneasiness or discom-

fortAdditional symptoms may occur as the infection

progresses, including:• difficulty breathing or swallowing• changes in vision• slurred speech

which has a huge pop-ulation of around 1.37billion. “While it is en-couraging to see we areincreasingly being vo-ciferous about ouropinions on what isgood for the countryand what is not, we stillseem to be doing noth-ing much about whatwe do with our eyes af-ter we are gone. Fake notes making way intocountry- A cause for concern

Mumbai City crime branch officers arrested a36-year-old man, who landed from Dubai on Sun-day, at the international airport for allegedly pos-sessing 1,193 fake Indian currency notes worth ¹ 23.86 lakh – all indenominations of ¹ 2,000. The notes are of high quality and all the secu-rity features of the genuine currency have been successfully copied intothe notes. While conducting a search, the police found the notes wrappedin layers of clothes in four travel bags. He was brought to the unit office, and during inquiry confessed that he had been to Dubai for a holiday, where he was handed over the fake currency to deliver in Mumbai.

Despite all the efforts of the government to unearth fake notes, theGulf countries pave way for bringing illegal notes to India and that iscausing concern. With the help of demonetization and unearthing of 500and 1000 rupee notes, we could curtail terrorism in Jammu and Kash-mir and the miscreants are trying for short cut to success.

PM Modi keen to ensure that the students take exams in a relaxed atmosphereBy Vinod C. Dixit

Recently our PrimeMinister NarendraModi had an interactionwith students, teachers, and parents during his‘Pariksha Pe Charcha2020’ programme. A lotof excitement and en-thusiasm was seenamong the students, teachers and parents tonot only participate inthe unique event butalso to receive valuabletips from PM Modi whois keen to ensure thatthe students take ex-ams in a relaxed atmo-sphere and do not comeunder stress, to ensurebetter results in thelong run.

To a question from astudent and losing in-terest while studying, the PM said most oftenstudents get demotivat-

ed due to factors that areexternal to them and alsoas they try to attach toomuch significance totheir own expectations.

It is a very commonphenomenon among stu-dents especially when animportant examinationis at their door step. It isextremely disastrous asit affects them psycho-logically, socially, emo-tionally and cognitively. In fact, even Albert Ein-stein suffered from examfever, and WinstonChurchill only managedto write his name whenhe was appearing for anentrance exam.

Prime Ministerasked the students tofind out the reason forthe demotivation andponder over how to dealwith it. He gave the ex-ample of the recent issue

of Chandrayaan and hisvisit to ISRO. PM Modiwhile giving examplesof how cricketers RahulDravid and V V S Lax-man batted in difficultsituations during India– Australia match in

2001 to clinch victoryfor India from the jawsof defeat rightly saidthat “We should not lookat failures as setbacksor stumbling blocks. Wecan add enthusiasm toevery aspect of life. A

temporary setbackdoesn’t mean that wecannot succeed in life.In fact a setback maymean that the best is yetto come. We should tryto convert our dis-tressed situations as

stepping stones for abright future”

Examinations arealways stressful and fillus with fear becauseour future is linked upwith them. The extentof exam stress is too

much that drives themto take extreme mea-sures. For a brilliantstudent the examina-tion is ‘Now or Never’.For a poor one it is ‘Nei-ther here nor Any-where’. The fear of ex-ams is more before theexams causing them tounderperform on thatday. We cannot expectwhat is coming in exam& what is not. Manynegative happeningstake place when examsenter the student’s life.Student becomes ner-vous, tensed & un-healthy because of suchenvironment. The bestsolution for this issue isthat the students needto maintain a calm andpeaceful mind. And it isthe responsibility of par-ents and teachers tomake it possible. Our

parents can also be a bigreason of students get-ting too much tensed fortheir examinations.Parents pressurizethem to perform ex-tremely well in exams& in that immensepressure, academic per-formance gets affected. Sometimes even stu-dents also feel anxietywhen they study to com-pete in exams. They feelthe fear of losing in thecompetition. One mustremember that scoringlow marks or failing anexam is not the end ofthe world. Each time thegoing gets tough, Ithink of this quote I hadread in my school days,“Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try Again.Fail again. Fail better.’’
