Need to expedite worksNMMC has undertaken road repairing works in Navi Mum-

bai. While this is not a new experience for the Navi Mumbai-ites as road repairing work appears to be an ongoing processin the satellite city, but the manner in which the works areprogressing is very disheartening. The dug up roads are caus-ing inconvenience and great deal of hardship to the motoristsand the pedestrians alike.

The quality and quantity of infrastructural facilities of a cityis the barometer for assessing its development. It is not onlyindicative of economic progress, but also aids it. It helps instarting development process as well as in sustaining thegrowth rate. The paved roads with good riding quality not onlyfacilitate uninterrupted movement of vehicles, but also help insaving the vehicle operational cost. This is all the more signif-icant from the point of view of energy conservation and savingthe already meager and fast depleting irreplenishable petro-leum resources. Unfortunately, in Navi Mumbai the picture onthis front is not very rosy. In spite of being a well-planned city, developing the road network has been completely ignored bythe development authorities for Navi Mumbai. Inspite of re-peated requests by the residents including agitations by theangry commuters, no care is being taken in these past yearsto improve the riding quality of the roads. Roads with poorriding quality cause distress in the vehicles besides increas-ing the vehicle operational cost. Although quite a large amountis earmarked every year in the budget for the maintenance ofthe roads, but going by the quality it is evident that these fundsare not being effectively utilized. One of the major reasons forpoor roads is that they are frequently dug up by the serviceproviders like MTNL, MSEB and other private companies forlaying cables and pipes. As they are not restored afterwards, these portions initiate the deterioration of further stretch.

If Navi Mumbai is to integrate with other cities for eco-nomic development, all out effort is required to be made todevelop the road network as these are the life- lines of aneconomy. Once road repairing work is undertaken, effortsshould be made to complete the project as fast as possible.NMMC should employ more staff so that the works could becarried out day and night. Lenient and casual approach wouldcertainly not pay result.

HEALTH AND NUTRITION

By Bhavani Swaminathan

In India, our an-cestors used to cook inclay pots. Due to ur-banization clay potsare now replaced bymetals like steel, alu-minium and non-stickpans. Are we moresmarter than our an-cestors? We thinkthat since financiallywe are more strongerthan our ancestorsand hence we aremore smarter thanthem. We have theresources availablewith us to make ourlife easy. Have we everthought that why inolden days people usedclay pots for cooking? Was there any scien-tific reason behind it?Now it’s time to anal-yse the reasons andfind out whether weshould again switchback to the clay potsreplacing steel, alu-minium, non-stickcookware, etc.

During olden daysit was said that whenfood when cooked in

the presence of sunlightand air gives maximumhealth benefit. Whilecooking in the clay potthe clay lid will notcompletely cover thepot. Air will be movingin and out from all thesides and when the lidis opened in betweencooking, the food willget sunlight. Foremosthealth benefits of claypot cooking come fromits ability to circulatesteam throughout cook-ing. This provides plen-ty of moisture andmeans that you cancook with less oil andfat.

The second mostimportant point whichis scientifically provenis that 100% nutritivevalue of the food is re-tained when cooked inclay pots. Whereas ifthe food is cooked inbronze or copper thenonly 90% of its nutritivevalue is retained and ifthe utensil used forcooking is aluminiumthen only 7%-13% nu-tritive value is re-tained. Consumption offood cooked in clay potscan make us stay awayfrom diseases like bron-chitis, asthma, arthri-tis, cancer etc. Theseare the main factorswhy we need to switchback to cooking in claypots.

Clay pots add manyimportant nutrients

like calcium, phospho-rous, iron, magnesiumand sulfur to food, which are extremelybeneficial to ourbody. Clay is also alka-line and thus, neutral-izes the acidity in thefood, which makes iteasier for us to digest.Since Clay is alkalinein nature and when food

is cooked it neutralizesthe PH balance of foodand hence acts as a nat-ural detox. You will besurprised to know thatmud contains all thepossible vitamins; evenVitamin B12. Slowcooking process retainsall the nutrients of thefood that we cook andhence the food is muchtastier. Reheating thefood always leads to lossof nutrition but if youcook in a clay pot it re-

Healthier Kitchen with earthen potstains the temperaturefor a longer time and noworries for reheating.Hence there is no needto transfer it to a cas-serole.

Since clay is porous, you cannot clean it us-ing soap or normal dish-washing detergent. Thesoap will soak into theclay and end up leach-

ing into thenext mealyou cook inthe pot. In-stead, youn e e dto clean aclay pot us-ing hot wa-ter and astiff brush.Baking sodacan be usedto removethe odoursespecially ifyou havecooked withonion andgarlic. For

stubborn stains, takerock salt in a scrub padand scrub it nicely. Fillthe pot with hot waterand wait for half hour.Discard the water andwash it again.

A tip would be if youwant to use your potsfor both savory andsweet dishes and youhave the storage space, you might want to in-vest in two pots so thatany absorbed flavorswon’t affect the taste of

your recipe.At the same time

when you decide to re-place your kitchen withthe earthen ware thensome important pointshas to be taken care of.1. The mud which is

used to make thepots should not befrom the nearby cityarea as there is toomuch of human in-terference. It meansthat this mud wouldhave come in touchwith the detergentand sewage which inturn would pollutethe natural elementof mud.

2. Handmade potsshould be boughtand not machinemade. The reason iswhen the pots areprepared manuallythe unwantedstones and otherthings are removed. But in machinemade pots, thestones and pebblesand other unwantedthings will be pro-cessed automatical-ly which will not bebeneficial duringcooking. The quali-ty will be depleted.

3. The bottom of theclay pot should berough compared tothe upper portionsbecause then onlythe pot will get heat-ed properly usingless fuel and the food

will be cooked re-taining all the nu-trients.

4. You will be sur-prised to know thatwhen you are fill-ing clay bottle withRO water whichdoes not have anymineral in it, thenatural nutrientsof the mud/claywill get mixed withwater and providesminerals to thewater. Keep thebottle filled for onehour, the waterwill be replenishedwith all mineralspresent in themud. Now its high time

to understand that ourancestors were moresmart and intelligentthan us. So let us goback to our roots andstart preparing andeating in clay pots andget all the nutritionrequired by our bodywithout consumingpills for calcium orvitamins or minerals.

I think AC trains are a good idea. There will be lesscongestion as the crowd will get divided. We should alsoconsider the fare factor. The tickets should be affordableespecially for the students.

Riddhi Shirke, SY B.Com, Pillai College

FROM THE CAMPUS Should we have more air conditioned local trains?

I think most of the college students would not be able toafford the tickets of the air conditioned trains. So forstudents like me, it is not a good idea. I believe if ACtrains are affordable then only they should be welcomed.Students should be able to afford these trains that shouldbe the motive.

Sreejith Kumar, Pillai College

I think it is not necessary as college students cannotafford air conditioned trains and it will be heavy on theparents’ pockets as well. It is better they work on clean-er and better trains rather. Please add regular cleaningsessions in the train.Merrin John, TY BMM, Pillai College

According to me there is no problem introducing air con-ditioned locals. It will be as good as metro and moreover, people will no longer lean outside running train. It willbe good as far as safety measures are concerned as well.Sumit Sharma, SY B.Com, Pillai College

Explaining Corona Virus: Things to know

By Dr.Vinay Joshi

A meeting of theEmergency Committeeconvened by the WHODirector-General underthe InternationalHealth Regulations(IHR) (2005) regardingthe outbreak of novelcoronavirus 2019 in thePeople’s Republic ofChina, with exporta-tions currently report-ed in the Republic ofKorea, Japan, Thailandand Singapore, tookplace recently. Whilethe committee mem-bers expressed diver-gent views on whetherthis event constitutes aPHEIC or not yet thereis an urgency of the sit-uation need to create asmuch awareness aspossible about the virus.

What is a coronavirus?Coronaviruses are a

large group of virusesthat are commonamong animals andmainly circulateamong animals andrarely get transmittedfrom animals to hu-mans (zoonosis). Ex.Middle East respirato-ry syndrome (MERS)

and Severe acute respi-ratory syndrome. InMay 2015, there was anoutbreak of MERS inKorea, which was thelargest outbreak out-side of the Arabian Pen-insula. In 2003, 774people died from a se-vere acute respiratorysyndrome (SARS) out-break. MERS andSARS are types of coro-naviruses. Coronavirusinfections, in general, are virtually indistin-guishable from otherrespiratory infections. In mild cases, theycause runny nose, cough, sore throat, fa-tigue and fever. Butwith 2019-nCoV, pa-tients can progress tohigh fever, difficultybreathing and evenpneumonia..

Signs and symptomsMost coronaviruses

spread the same wayother cold-causing vi-ruses do: through in-fected people coughingand sneezing, by touch-ing an infected person’shands or face, or bytouching things such asdoorknobs that infectedpeople have touched. The patient may devel-op mild to moderate up-per respiratory tract ill-ness, similar to a com-mon cold. The symp-toms include a runnynose, cough, sorethroat, headache andfever, which can last forfew days. For immuno-compromised patients(elderly and newborns),

the virus could causemore serious, respirato-ry tract illness like apneumonia or bronchi-tis. Other symptomsinclude diarrhea, fa-tigue and shortness ofbreath, respiratory dis-tress and kidney fail-ure. In other words, thesymptoms of most coro-naviruses are similar toany other upper respi-ratory infection, includ-ing runny nose, cough-ing, sore throat, andsometimes a fever. Inmost cases, you won’tknow whether youhave a coronavirus or adifferent cold-causingvirus, such as rhinovi-rus.

The Wuhan coro-navirus is currentlythought to be milderand patients have expe-rienced a mild coughfor a week followed byshortness of breath and15% to 20% of caseshave become severe, re-quiring ventilation inthe hospital.

How it spreads?Viruses can spread

from human contactwith animals but weyet don’t know whichanimal may havecaused the current out-break in China. Hu-man-to-human trans-mission of the viruseshappens after comingin contact with an in-fected person’s secre-tions, such as dropletsin a cough. Dependingon how virulent the vi-rus is, a cough, sneeze

or handshake couldcause exposure.

Who is affected?Wuhan coronavirus

appear to affect immu-nocompromised pa-tients mainly elderlyand children.

TreatmentYou could get lab

tests, including noseand throat cultures tofind out whether yourcold was caused by acoronavirus, butthere’s no reason to.The test resultswouldn’t change howyou treat your symp-toms, which typicallygo away in a few days. But if a coronavirus in-fection spreads to thelower respiratory tract(your windpipe andyour lungs), it cancause pneumonia, espe-cially in older people, people with heart dis-ease, or people withweakened immune sys-tems. There is no spe-cific treatment. Most ofthe time, symptomsusually subside on theirown however oneshould seek medicaladvice early. The symp-toms can be controlledby pain or fevermedication. It is advis-able to drink plenty offluids, adequate rest

and sleep as much aspossible.

How can you canprevent it?

There is no vaccineyet to protect againstthis family of viruses. However, awareness re-mains the key. You canreduce risk of infectionby avoiding people whoare sick. Refrain fromtouching your eyes, nose and mouth. Washyour hands often withsoap and water and forat least 20 seconds. Cov-er your mouth andnose when you cough orsneeze, and disinfectthe objects and surfac-es you touch. If travel-ing to China, be awareof symptoms and avoidlive animal markets, which is where the lat-est outbreak began inChina. If you see some-one coughing or sneez-ing, try to keep yourkids as far away fromthem as possible. Andmake sure that every-one in your house (in-cluding yourself) hasreceived the flu shot.

How to protect othersIf you have cold-like

symptoms, you canhelp protect others bydoing the following• stay home while you

are sick

• avoid close contactwith others

• cover your mouthand nose with a tis-sue when you coughor sneeze, thenthrow the tissue inthe trash and washyour hands

• clean and disinfectobjects and surfacesCoronavirus and

pregnancyIn pregnant wom-

en, the infection withcoronavirus can be se-rious but we don’t haveany reports of it yet.

Coronavirus and IndiaThe Government of

India issued a traveladvisory to its citizens, particularly for Wu-han. It was announcedthat passengers arriv-ing from China to Indiahave to would undergothermal screening. Lat-er, the procedures wereextended to six othermajor international air-ports. Travelers are ad-vised to avoid all “no-es-sential travel to China”and to “avoid close con-tact with people show-ing symptoms of illnesssuch as cough, runningnose etc”The writer is Consultant –Pediatrician, Cloudnine

The carnival of Goais the most famous fes-tival in the state andhas been celebratedsince the 18th centuryAD as a precursor tothe abstinence of Lent. The carnival is exclu-sive and unique to Goa,and was intro-duced by the Por-tuguese whoruled the Statefor over five hun-dred years.

Huge colour-ful parades takeover the state’scities with bands, floats and dances. Thefloat parades are orga-nised in associationwith the State TourismDepartment. Although, the three-day festival isprimarily celebrated byCatholics, it has alsoabsorbed Hindu tradi-tion revelry, westerndance forms, andturned into a pageant-ry of sorts. Though itstarted as a celebrationenjoyed only by the lo-cal population, it hastoday crossed the statefrontiers and attractsthousands of peoplefrom all over the coun-try as well as from oth-er parts of the world.

Viva La CarnivalThe carnival is held

in February/March forfour days and nights, when the legendaryking Momo takes overthe state and the streetscome alive with musicand colour. The carni-val is meant to be afeasting-drinking-mer-rymaking orgy just be-fore the austere 40 daysof Lent. Huge paradesare organized through-out the state withbands, dances andfloats out all night onthe streets, and grandballs held in the eve-nings.

Theheart disease is a hered-itary one and a person’sparents having suchdisease needs to be care-ful. The heart isstressed and that is themajor reason for thehappenings all of a sud-den. We need to prac-tice to de-stress in aproper way. For this totake place change yourattitude towards lifeand do not look for per-fection in everything inlife.

Cholesterol accu-mulates right from thechildhood age. Lynn in conversation

with Harshita Dagha,

freelancer with the

Newsband

If somebody asked me what my

retirement plans looked like, it def-

initely would be something like sav-

ing enough money to move to the

mountains and live the rest of my

days in peace and seclusion far, far

away from my poke-y relatives.

This, however, is a little too differ-

ent from how Lynn Ruth Miller

sees her life.

Born in Toledo, Ohio, Lynn Ruth

Miller decided to take a jab at

stand-up comedy at the tender age

of 70. Now - at 86, she is still go-

ing strong and is currently on a

world tour (about to hit Asia soon)

and she shows no signs of stopping.

She had spent so much of her life

trying to figure out how to live her

life, catering to others and fighting

against conventions, the charming

lady had literally nothing to lose

when she took up comedy. “I stum-

bled on stand up when I wanted to

write a story about a comedy col-

lege. I took the class and discov-

ered something I enjoyed doing,”

Lynn tells us, “I was 70 years old.

It wasn’t until I had been doing it

for about a year as a lark that I

realized people make money at this

and that it is a profession. It devel-

oped into a career for me without

my even being aware of it.”

She recounts her life in the for-

ties, growing up as the girl her moth-

er didn’t want to be—a “failure”

as she calls herself. But then she

asks “What is wrong with being dif-

ferent?” And she is right, there is

indeed nothing wrong with being

different. Just look at her for ref-

erence! She would gladly scoff at

my own retirement plans. “People

think that life stops when they re-

tire and it does not. It can, it’s your

choice. That’s the thing they don’t

realize, they have a choice.”

You can see her as an icon too,

someone who is going against all

conventions set in place for older

women. You expect someone at 86

to be a “doddering” old woman

who you leave your seat for in pub-

lic transportation. And even though

she would appreciate the seat, she

rather not have you see her as just

that—an old woman. She wants to

be seen as an individual and she is

doing the best at it. It kind of makes

the rest of us hopeful as women.

More often than not, ageism hits

us harder and suddenly, we aren’t

supposed to have a personality, hob-

bies and interests after, say, we hit

our thirties.

The nice thing about dating at my age is you don’t have to worry about meeting

their parents: Lynn Ruth Miller, the World’s Oldest Stand-up Comedian

Lynn gives us something, a

shimmer of hope that perhaps

things do change. That at an age

when an average person waits and

broods for death, Lynn has given

her life to do something she im-

mensely enjoys. She is right now,

travelling across the world, per-

forming and looking ahead to meet

new people. For instance, she re-

counts to So It Goes, how she had

met a breakdancer in an airport

who had mutilated his body and

begun to lose his hair due to the

high demands of his profession. It

led her to evidently say, “I certain-

ly cannot afford to lose any more

hair than I already have. Bald is

only beautiful on a baby’s butt and

I am definitely beyond that.”

Also, I had to ask: does her age

make her richer in experience or

not? She gladly answered, “No. I

get material from the life I am liv-

ing now. My age gives me a bit of

perspective and that means I am a

pretty good judge of what is funny

to others as well as myself. The

problem with younger comedians

is that they think because THEY

think something is funny, everyone

else will and that is not

true. Finding the funny is an art,

and no one can teach it to you. You

have to experience failure to fig-

ure that out.”

However, does the audience

connect with her or is it the other

way around then? She explains, “I

connect with the crowd. It isn’t the

other way around. After all, I am

at least 40 years older than most

of my audience. I am from a dif-

ferent world from theirs. I have to

show them what we have in com-

mon even though I am older than

their grandparents.”

Now, she was in the USA and I

was here in another country, but I

hear she is visiting Jakarta, Saigon

soon. So I had to ask if she had

any plans to come visit India. “I

would love to do my comedy in In-

dia but I have not been invited. I

have sent out several e-mails to

comedy clubs but have received no

response. It would thrill me to take

my comedy so such an interesting

and diverse country.”

A telephonic conversation

wasn’t possible (time zones are a

mess), our email conversation left

me smiling widely. I don’t know

about you, but I know I’d love to

see her here, so please get the

“hint”?
