400 Principals attend symposium with MinisterAshish Shelar at Children Welfare Centre High School

Waste mismanagementA decade back, anyone traveling from

Mumbai to Navi Mumbai, would experi-ence sudden change in the quality of airand cleanliness as one crossed the Thanecreek bridge. Today, they seem to havemerged together and the same garbageheaps and decomposing organic wasteemanating foul smell as in Mankhurd, could be seen on this side of the creekbridge as well.

Not only the local bodies are to beblamed, section of residents is also toshare the blame as they lack civic senseas regards disposal of garbage. They donot take pains to throw it in dustbins andlitter yards of area around dustbins withgarbage. To add to this, the rag pickersand stray animals scatter it still furtherthereby creating nuisance for the locality.Lot of waste is generated in the commer-cial areas, vegetable market, garages etc.which do not find proper disposal. Lack ofvigilance and concern for hygiene on partof NMMC encourages such kind of unciv-ilized behaviour.

If NMMC desires to really create a gar-den city on lines of its slogan, it has to shedits indifference towards unhygienic ambi-ences and environmental concerns. Thecontractors as well as the staff have to bemade more accountable and it has to beensured that every penny spent for thepurpose is well spent. Besides, additionaldustbins, replacing damaged and corrod-ed mild steel dustbins with fibre reinforcedplastic dustbins which are hygienically su-perior, aesthetically beautiful and easier inhandling, transporting vehicles, incinera-tors etc. should be provided and fines forflouting rules should be imposed toachieve the required degree of hygieneand cleanliness. Also unauthorized slumdevelopments should be curbed to furtherthis aim as slums are potential threat tothe environment. It should learn that for-mulation of laws is not enough as going bythe past experience, meaning of ‘democ-racy’ has always been over stretched bycertain section of citizens and that ‘lawsnot enforced cease to be laws’.

MUMBAI: A sympo-sium on “New Educa-tion policy and chang-es in educational field”was organised by Jan-ata Kalyan Kendraand Children WelfareCentre High School, atYari Road, Andheri(West), Mumbai on7th August,2019. Min-ister of Education,Sports & Youth Wel-fare Ashish Shelar wasthe chief guest. Educa-tion Inspector of WestZone of Greater Mum-bai Anil Sable and hiscolleagues, Childrenwelfare Centre HighSchool’s Principal AjayKaul, Former DeputyMayor Arun Deo andthe principals of over400 schools werepresent. On the occa-sion Principal AjayKaul felicitated Shelarand other guests.

In the interactivesession, the issue ofhow some of the schoolsmake their studentsfail in 9th standard toensure cent per centresult in SSC was dis-cussed. Shelar, Kauland Sable also interact-ed and discussed with

people about lack of fa-cilities like lights, toi-lets in some schools, delay in payment ofteachers’ salaries andother issues related tothe field of education.

On the occasion,Shelar urged people tocommunicate to him ifthey have complaintsand assured them thathe would try to solve

their problems. How-ever he asked them tocarry out their workwith total responsibil-ity and pay attention ifany student is weak instudies. Because theteacher’s responsibili-ty is not only to teachbut it is cumulative re-sponsibility to ensurethat the students un-derstand what has

been taught. Nowa-days parents find itdifficult to fill in ad-mission forms, getexam results, etc sincemost of these thingsare being digitized. Butthey will not face anydifficulty from nextyear onwards since ittakes some time toadapt with new sys-tem.

Residents of Harishchandra SadanHousing complex at Shirone churn

garbage into useful productNAVI MUMBAI: The residents of Har-

ishchandra Sadan Housing Society atShirone are literally churning garbageinto useful products, thereby setting anexample for all the housing societiesin the city. As per the ‘Solid WasteManagement Rules 2016’, it is man-datory for all the housing societies toset a wet waste compositing unit atsource. The Navi Mumbai MunicipalCorporation (NMMC) has made it man-datory for the societies generating wetwaste of more than 100 kg of per dayto implement a wet waste processingproject in their own premises. Harish-chandra Sadan Society, which has only40 flats has gone a step ahead: theyare not only segregating the waste atsource but are even compositing thewet waste.

Before implementing the project thesociety did research about the logisticrequired for its implementation i.e.place, equipment required, financesetc. To understand the process better, the members of the society also visitedan exhibition organized by NMMC atWonders Park on compositing. It wasthen unanimously decided to buy adrum-forming device that would be eco-nomically affordable and would requireless space. They took help of Godrej Fi-nance and implemented the project onthe society’s terrace.

The project

Two specially designed drums of 50kg capacity have been installed. Thesociety usually generates 15 to 16 kgsof wet waste every day. This wet wasteis dumped daily into the drum andmixed with dry leaves and sawdust 2to 3 times a day. The leachate producedduring the process is mixed with 5 li-

tres of plain water and is used forwatering plants. “Currently, the fer-tilizer is being used for trees in thearea. However, it is our desire to de-velop a garden in future,” said thecouple Anita and Umakant Patil, res-idents of society.

India, China was theother team to make itto the top eight of thetournament. Despiteequal number ofpoints as India andChina, Thailandcouldn’t progress tothe next round andwill be playing in theclassification roundfor 9th-16th places.

India began theirgame against Thai-land on Monday insimilar fashion to theNew Zealand gameand won the first set25-15 with ease.Thailand raised theirgame in the second setand edged past theiropponents in a hard-fought set thatfinished 25-23 in theirfavour. The next setalso followed a similarscript where Thailand

Say No to plasticsPlastic is extremely bad for the environment.

It is one of man’s worst inventions. Plastic is non-biodegradable. This means that waste plastic can-not be turned into any other substance that is eco-friendly. Although tonnes and tonnes of plastic areburned down in the most advanced incinerators, all that remains is plas-tic. It doesn’t change into anything else, as many other materials do.Hence plastic waste is dangerous to the environment.

Plastic carry bags reach the drainage systems and cause clogging es-pecially -during the rains. If too much plastic ends up in a lake or a pond,it creates a layer that denies oxygen to everything below so that no plantor animal life can survive in that water body. If animals eat plastic bagsthrown in rubbish dumps, it knots up their intestines and they die apainful death. If plastic lies on land, it can choke it to the extent thatnothing will grow there again. Hence, plastics must be done away withcompletely.

There are many alternatives to plastic and we should use them. Forshopping we can use cloth/ jute or paper carry-bags. We can get milk inbottles or cardboard cartons. We can use metal containers to store thingsthat are now stored in plastic containers. Many things now made of plas-tic can have better and eco-friendly alternatives. So, the earlier we saygood bye to plastic, the safer will be the future of our planet earth.

Plastic is widely used in our day to day life. Starting from a pen to apolythene bag in which we carry fruits and books are forms of plastic.Though convenient in our day to day use, it has posed an alarming threatto the environment.

Elegance is excellentRemembering David Gower from his playing days is like thinking

about first love. There was beauty, joy, a surreal air and in the end, poi-gnancy too as one of the most elegant southpaws retired in 1993. Yes,there was Brian Lara, but for a generation of fans, who owe allegiance tothe 1980s, if there was an equivalent of a thing of beauty being a joyforever among left-handed batsmen, it had to be Gower. So, elegance ismore genetic in the actual term of the word.

In competitive tennis we had Steffi Graf for grace and style. She usedto execute shots like men and she was an equal to men in lawn tennis. Her husband Andre Agassi lasted long in World Tennis circuit and he waselegance personified in playing long rallies and make a match of it in fivesetter. The Agassi - Steffi Graf couple lead an elegant life after their re-tirement. You work hard to improve your concentration, technique andyour ability to make a 50, a 100, may be a 200. The elegance-thing ismuch more genetic.

Like cricket and tennis, music is also played with a silken touch andthe elegance of vocalist go a long way in her support artist playing musicinstruments like Mrindangam, Violin, Gadam and Ganchera. The twoprime aspects of Carnatic music have been composition and exposition. Inpractice, the composer takes a back seat, for, the composition reaches therasika, as interpreted by the artist. The vocalist sing in an elegant fash-ion till the time thaniya vardanam takes the centre stage in the end.

In dance, Odissi is marked by grace and elegance for the audience tolook and enjoy each subtle movement in dance steps. Subtle abhinayaand effortless jathis made dance performance most enjoyable.

The month of Aadi has been of special significance for Amman worshipin Tamil Nadu. The way the Sari is placed on Amman with pleats wellarranged all make Amman most elegant in appearance. We expect thequality of being graceful and stylish in appearance or manner. Further,we look for the quality of being pleasingly ingenious and simple; neat-ness. So elegance is excellent.
