Dear Parents and Guardians,
St Brigid’s College hosted reviewers Helen Goode and Mark McGinnity with assistance from CEO Personnel Bill Slatter and Chris Robarts this week. The Review Panel interviewed staff, students and parents in relation to our ability as a school to achieve students’ potential in terms of learning outcomes and to provide best possible learning environments across five key aspects of schooling. These five key aspects of schooling are: Catholic School Culture, Learning and Teaching, Wellbeing, Leadership and Stewardship and finally, Community Engagement.
Today, the Review Panel with assistance from Fr. Peter Hudson, Dean Winfield (Chair of our Advisory Council) and staff members developed a 5 year Strategic Education Plan which will be presented, along with the findings of the Panel, to the school early next term.
Many thanks to the parents who spoke to the reviewers about our College and their perceptions of what works and what needs improvement.
SNOW TRIP This week 23 of our Year 10 and Year 11 students attended the annual Outdoor Education snow trip at Falls Creek. The weather continued to do the noble thing with abundant amounts of snow present which enabled our students to refine their snowboarding skills. Many thanks to Cameron Pickering, Naomi Gash, Tom Magee and Hayden McDonald for the organisation and assistance with this trip.
LEGACY PUBLIC SPEAKING Congratulations to Kyra Clarke and Annabella Fort (both Yr 9) who competed in the Regional Legacy Junior Public Speaking competition on Tuesday in Bendigo. Both girls delivered powerful performances in both their prepared and impromptu speeches with Kyra being announced as one of three winners and Annabella awarded runners-up. Kyra will now compete at state level competition later this year in Melbourne. Congratulations on your fine efforts, Kyra and Annabella.

Earlier this week, Josephine Bond (Year 11) attended Government House, Melbourne to attend the National Youth Science Forum. The National Youth Science Forum (NYSF) is a highly competitive summer school program dedicated to exposing current Year 11 students who are heading into Year 12 and are thinking about a career in science, engineering and related disciplines to major scientific institutions and researchers, so that they may make more informed choices for their future endeavours. Well done Josephine.
STAFF NEWS Congratulations to staff member, Kara Gough and husband Justin, on the recent addition to the family, a beautiful young lady, Tully Dawn. A future enrolment for St Brigid’s College.
Congratulations also to staff member, Ebony Cramer on the announcement of her engagement to Lindsay Hobbs.
SCHOOL SOCIAL Our SRC has organised our annual Social for Thursday, 21st September at the Masonic Hall commencing at 7.00pm and concluding at 10.00pm. The theme is “90s Blue Light Disco” and all attending are urged to dress up and make the night a memorable one. Students will not be allowed to leave unless parents are present to pick them up. Supervision will be provided by our staff.
END OF TERM ARRANGEMENTS Next Friday our VCAL students have organised a “Homeroom Fete Extravaganza” with all money raised being donated to the Catholic Missions. Each homeroom has devised activities for our students that will encourage participation and success. It is very important that all students attend this last day as it clearly demonstrates our Catholic ethos based in the Brigidine Tradition. It will also be a “coloured clothes” dress day.
UNIT 3&4 STUDENTS Our VCE Unit 3&4 students are reminded of the importance of the coming term break as an opportunity to consolidate their learning and to prepare for their upcoming examinations. Over the holidays we will be running a series of practice examinations which all Unit 3&4 students should attend. Many thanks to John Lowes for organizing this trial examination program and to the staff who will be supporting John by supervising sessions.
HATS A reminder to all parents and students that it is a uniform requirement for Term 4 that all students must wear an approved hat when in the sun. St. Brigid’s College approved hats are available from LOWES in the Horsham Plaza.
Yours in the community of St Brigid’s College

Annabella Fort and Kyra Clarke represented St. Brigid's College at the Legacy Junior Public Speaking preliminary final in Bendigo. Annabella's prepared 5 minute speech titled 'What's the Greatest Sacrifice?' was about how today's youth don't make the sacrifices that their predecessors once did. Kyra's speech titled 'The Big C' was about Cancer and what our country is doing to eliminate it. The two minute impromptu speech, which allowed only 5 minutes preparation time, was on the topic 'My Biggest Concern For the Future Is...'. Both girls spoke well and approached this topic from different angles. Annabella was awarded Runners Up. Kyra was announced as one of three winners who will speak at state level in Melbourne at the end of October.
Horsham College Bus Passes
Whilst we endeavour to provide this service to all our client schools, parents need to understand that we are not always able to meet your needs. All requests for a child to be issued a Bus Pass to travel on a feeder/shuttle/country bus need to be received by Horsham College at least 24 hours prior to the travel. Due to some of our buses being already booked to capacity it may not be possible to issue a pass. Passes can only be issued if there are seats available on the bus. Bus Coordinator can only be contacted on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. Thank you for your understanding in this matter.

Small Business students are running a Muffin Drive to raise money for Rachel's Wish. The yummy Cafe Jas muffins are available to order right now through to the 21st Sept. Who knew supporting small business studies, local business and our local charity could be so delicious?!!
Year 8 students went to Roses Gap and participated in outdoor adventure activities such as abseiling, rock climbing, canoeing, giant swing, pamper pole and the vertical playpen.
SHARK TANK | The VCAL Literacy students have just completed a major assessment task which required them to develop a business proposal and pitch their ideas to 'The Sharks'. Miss Schilling and Mrs Dooling were blown away by the brilliant ideas presented and the engaging way in which they put their ideas forward. Well done, Team VCAL!

JOB READY As part of the Wimmera Development Association Rural Leadership Program, a short Job Ready Program for a small number of Year 9 students has been running over the last three weeks. Ryan Shirmer, an accountant from Green & Taylor, Malinda Watson from Nuseed and Leah Davies from the Nhill Rural City Council have been leading the program. In week one the students considered what their interests were, what they were good at and they were given the opportunity to talk about their career goals (if they had any?). Ryan and Malinda also shared their own career pathways with the students. In week two it was all about the Resume! Ryan and Malinda gave the students examples of a good and poor resumes and spoke with the students about the importance of having a current resume. The students then were given the task to create a resume or to get feedback on the resume they already have. For week three Malinda and Leah covered the importance of being able to receive negative feedback and to have success in the job interview. The students participated in a number of role plays to help develop the skills required. The next step for these students is the option to participate in Work Experience next term. All the students found this program valuable and thank Ryan, Malinda and Leah for their involvement and leadership. Below are some photos taken over the three weeks.
