Dear Parents and Friends,
Make Poverty History
On Wednesday morning we stood up for the eradication of world poverty through the
achievement of the 8 Millennium goals commitments that Australia signed. A photo of us
with an explanatory note will be sent to the Prime Minister, our local MP and the
Catholic Social Justice team.
We think sometimes that poverty is only being hungry, naked and homeless.
The poverty of being unwanted, unloved and uncared for is the greatest poverty.
Mother Teresa of Calcutta
Gonski Report
On average, it costs the government 20 per cent less to have a student educated in a
Catholic school.
Even with school fees, it still costs less to teach students in a Catholic school.
In a faith-filled environment, Catholic schools instill discipline and have high expectations
of their students. Our school aspires to develop well-rounded learners who achieve their
best and who are committed to action for justice and the common good.
In all areas, a higher percentage of Catholic students have achieved at or above the
National Minimum Standard for the National Assessment Program — Literacy and
Numeracy (NAPLAN) testing, compared to the Victorian average. Even in our most
disadvantaged communities, students in Catholic schools are more likely to study at
university after they finish school.
According to financial data from schools in Australia, Catholic schools also save the
Australian taxpayer $2.2 billion each year.
Catholic school funding must keep pace with rising government school costs. Our school
cannot afford to have its funding frozen. Any funding freeze would really be a cut. A
funding freeze would be unfair because our school already saves the government money.
Trivia Night
Find attached an invitation to a fantastic fun night on Saturday 24 November. This is for
all the family. We hope everyone can attend! The PFA are organising this as a fun low
cost night, so put it in your calendar now!
Conveyance Cheques
Nearly half of the cheques are still being held at the office. Please collect them soon! You
might consider signing them over for fees and levies which are due.
Working Bee 20 October
Have you noticed the huge piles of tee tree on the far side of the oval? We also washed
windows and walls, added rails to the front fence, weeded some garden, and burnt off! It
kept us busy but we achieved a lot on Saturday.
The honour roll includes Nick Love, Andy Taylor, Will Smith, Graeme and Rhonda Scoble,
David Robinson, Andrew Patterson and Karen Peeler.
The final working bee is on Friday 30 November.
CTLM closure Day Monday 29 October
Please note that the school will be closed on this day for the last of our Contemporary
Teaching and Learning of Mathematics training day at the Dallas Brookes Hall in the city.
God bless us all, John

Mission month
During the next four weeks, St Joseph’s will be celebrating Mission month by being involved in helping children on the Bahay Tuluyan mission. This year’s theme is “Restore Hope to a special someone.”
It is an opportunity to help those who are vulnerable and struggle to overcome poverty in the Philippines. It teaches our students about issues of mission and justice and allows them to share the loving grace of God throughout the world.
The senior Social Justice action team will be co-ordinating a collection of second hand, good quality toys, school shoes, towels and sheets.
Our Confirmation candidates and families met last Tuesday night to discuss their upcoming celebration. They discussed that confirmation involves being strengthened by the Holy Spirit to carry out the mission of Jesus in the world today through service and care. As a follow on from this evening, the candidates will assist classes to collect goods and fundraise in some way for Mission month. Karen McQuade Christian Life Leader

No 6. It is clear who is in charge
Families do not work well as democracies. In fact they seem to work best as benevolent dictatorships in which the parent or
parents consult a lot with their children but at the end of the day, the parent has the final say.
Some parents fear that if they take charge they will lose the friendship of their children, but often the reverse is true.
No 7. Consistency
Consistency is the ideal. Having parents who agree on rules and standards and who convey the same sorts of messages and
who value compassion over coercion, clearly has the best outcome in terms of children’s well being. It is also important that
parents not be open to manipulation and work together as a team.
Life, however, is not always so simple and we all know from sad and sour experience that parents cannot always be consistent.
Sometimes parents have different value systems or can’t come to a consistent way to handle particular areas. In these
situations, a second possibility is for one parent to take charge of a particular area. This is not the most desirable solution but it
is better than having parents in conflict over management issues or worse, undermining one another. In single aren’t families or
where parents are separated the same principle applies.
No 8. Teach the skills of Self-esteem
Families that work well seem to praise one another a lot. Compliments are made, positive efforts are commented on. Optimism
is in the air. Even in these families, teenagers still shrug and say, “yeah Mum” or “yeah Dad” whenever a compliment is made.
Teaching the skills of self-praise is useful. One way of doing this is to ask questions extensively about any achievement or
accomplishment. Asking questions like “How did you do that?” “How come you did so well at that test?” “What did you do?”
and “Have you been doing homework behind my back?”
No 9. Know how to argue
Families that work well know how to argue. It seems strange to say this because we all have the sense that families that work
well don’t have conflicts.
The family is really where we learn to resolve disputes fairly. The way parents teach children to resolve differences of opinion
with their brothers and sisters provides the basis for sharing, negotiating and problem solving in the world beyond the family.
While differences of opinion should be allowed to be expressed, children also need to learn that they will not be able to win at
all costs.
No 10. Parents are really unpredictable
With young children it is important to provide consistency and predictability. This allows them to feel sure of you. After a
while though, a bit of predictability can go a long way. To many children, most parents are about as predictable as a washing
machine cycle. It is important to have structure and consistency but it is also useful to act in ways that your children wouldn’t
expect. This keeps them interested in learning from you or at least wondering what you are up to.
Perhaps the most important feature of parents in healthy families is that they realise that all of the above is desirable but not
always possible and so they look at how to promote good functioning while not wasting energy on blaming themselves for the
times when things don’t quite work out as they had planned.

October is Walk to School Month. Walk to School is a program that encourages school children to walk to and
from school every day in October, to highlight the ways walking improves children’s health and wellbeing.
At St Joseph’s we are celebrating with a Walk to School Day on Thursday 25 October. Families are invited to
meet at the Yarra Junction playground at 8.00am to arrive at school by 8.45.
Some enthusiastic staff members will be joining the group but it is expected that children be accompanied by a
parent/adult.
The Parents and Friends will provide a snack upon arriving at school.
Please indicate below your intention to participate in the Walk to School Day.

This term we are emailing the newsletter to families as well as sending it home with the youngest child. You can still email the school office: [email protected] from your preferred email address so we can add your details to the mailing list. If we do not receive your email we will assume you prefer to access the newsletter from our school website.
