Truman Doctrine“ Stalin is not that kind of man. . . He doesn't want anything but security for his country, and I think that if I give him everything I possibly can, and ask nothing from him in return, noblesse oblige, he won't try to annex anything and will work with me for a world of democracy and peace. ”

—Franklin Roosevelt

President Truman was much more suspicious of Soviet intentions under Stalin

Truman supported a plan of containment (this was first espoused in the Truman Doctrine)

Containment = Prevent expansion of communismDo NOT “roll back” or end communism where it

already existsFirst exercised in Greece & Turkey

Iron Curtain“ From Stettin in the Baltic to Trieste in the Adriatic an

"iron curtain" has descended across the Continent. Behind that line lie all the capitals of the ancient states of Central and Eastern Europe. Warsaw, Berlin, Prague,

Vienna, Budapest, Belgrade, Bucharest and Sofia; all these famous cities and the populations around them lie in what I must call the Soviet sphere, and all are subject, in one form or another, not only to Soviet influence but to a very high and in some cases increasing measure of

control from Moscow. ”-Winston Churchill, March 1946
