What is a Scholarship?● Financial reward or aid to a student● Recognizes achievement → marks, athletics, leadership
and/or community involvement● Some may involve supplementary applications● Can be for financial need

What is a Bursary? An allotment of money granted to students who can demonstrate academic success, but who also have financial needs

What is an Award?
A symbolic (trophy or plaque) and/or monetary recognition of achievement
*May be for athletics, academics, community, etc.
What do Scholarships Require?✅ Marks: usually over 80% in grade 11/12 classes
✅ Involvement in your school and community
✅ Volunteering in your school and community
✅ Well-rounded
✅ Arts ✅ Athletics ✅ Clubs ✅ Leadership

What is usually on an application?
● Current Transcript - allow 24 hrs. for preparation
● Awards → School and Community● Volunteer and Co-curricular activities● Athletic/Artistic/Club Activities● Leadership● Employment● A variety of accomplishments in all areas● Some require detailed answers to essay

Reference letters● From a responsible adult who knows you well

Application Tips● Research → start a spreadsheet● Note deadlines and application process● Apply only to those that you qualify for → read the criteria● Meet the deadline (deadlines are not flexible, and often include a time of
day, not just a date)● Neatness is essential → type it, spell/grammar check● Submit via the required method (most are online)● Quality not quantity● Start early, timelines/time management are essential● Keep a hard copy & backup copy● Ask for TIPS from previous winners● Have someone proofread your application to provide feedback

Renewable for up to four years, with a total value of $100,000, each Loran Award includes:● An annual stipend of $10,000

Loran also grants approximately 102 finalist and provincial awards to promising candidates who are not selected as Loran Scholars.
What is Loran looking for?● Looking for overall academic
strength but your average is not the most heavily weighted criteria

Two Ways To ApplySchool Sponsorship
● Up to three candidates/school● Complete ESS application (due
on Sept 30)● If you are selected apply using
online form, indicating you are being sponsored (due by Oct 17)
● If you are selected to be a semi-finalist you will attend regional interviews
Direct Pool
● Complete online application without sponsorship
● Criteria is the same as sponsored pool
● The right applicant will shine through
Schulich Leader Scholarships50 Scholarships are awarded to entrepreneurial minded high school graduates enrolling in a Science, Engineering, Technology or Math program at 20 Partner Universities - * You must apply to one of 20 a partner University
25 Scholarships for Engineering valued at $ 100 000
25 Scholarships for Mathematics valued at $80 000
Erindale Deadline - January 6th - Submit name and ESS application to Ms. LaRoche for candidate selection.
Schulich Nomination Deadline January 29th - School must nominate candidate by this date (or earlier)
Schulich Scholarship Deadline - February 19, 2020 - Student completes application by this date (or earlier)
Queen’s University - Chancellor Scholarships Criteria:
● Full-time high school student ● Superior academic ability - 90%+ Average● Creative and original thinking● Proven leadership qualities● High school nomination required
