The course is jointly organized by the Hong Kong Geriatrics Society and Institute of Advanced Nursing Studies
COURSE INFORMATION
Aims of the Course
1. To develop the competence of registered nurses to provide a high standard of care for geriatric clients.
2. To facilitate nurses to perform clinical teaching and supervision of nursing staff / nurse learners in
the geriatric unit. Intended Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of the course, participants should be able to:
1. outline the current trend and multidisciplinary approach in geriatric care 2. recognise the effect of ageing and the related problems of the elderly
3. identify the common medical and psychosocial problems of the elderly
4. assess the condition, plan and provide holistic care for the elderly client
5. implement measures to promote the rehabilitation of the elderly client
6. identify community resources available for the elderly client and make referral / liaison as required
7. identify high risk areas of elderly care and implement preventive measures accordingly e.g. fall
prevention, prevention of pressure sore, etc. 8. provide health education to elderly clients and their families / carers 9. recognise the legal and ethical aspects of elderly care
10. improve the standard of care in the geriatric unit 11. participate in the clinical teaching of nurse learners
Duration of the course
16.5 Study Days + 6 weeks Clinical Practicum
Design of the Course
1. Theoretical Input: 16.5 Study Days (1 Study Day / week)
Module I: 3, 10, 17 Mar 2021 (Wed) (Total: 3 whole study days)
Module II: 24 Mar 2021; 7, 14, 21, 28 Apr 2021; 5, 12, 26 May 2021; (Wednesday)
2, 16, 23, 30 Jun 2021 (included 1 day Educational visits)

2. Clinical Practicum: 6 weeks (19 Jul 2021 – 29 Aug 2021) including:
3 weeks in acute / extended care setting*;
2 weeks in acute / extended care setting*; and
1 week in community care setting
* Participants from acute and community setting: 2 weeks (acute); 3 weeks (extended care) setting

Entry Requirements
1. Registered nurses with valid practising certificates issued by the Nursing Council of Hong Kong. 2. The applicants should have not less than 24 months of post‐registration experience.
3. Priority will be given to nurses who are currently working in Medical Geriatrics care service or related specialties Units of HA Hospitals.
4. The applicants should have completed the e‐Learning programme 基礎老年學護理網上學習課程
(單元 2, 4, 7, 9 & 10) as the pre‐requisite for the course.
5. Lower priority would be given to nurses who have enrolled in previous PRCC without successful
completion
Exemption
Nurses who have completed - Fundamentals in Gerontological Nursing (2018) on 13/9, 20/9, 27/9 and 8/10/2018 AM; or
- Fundamentals in Gerontological Nursing (2019) on 13/9, 16/9, 17/9 and 30/9/2019 AM were eligible to apply for exemption of Module I in the PRCC in Gerontological Nursing (2020/2021)

Guidelines for Group Project and Patient Care Study
Any submission of course works (group project/patient care study) after the deadline will be deemed as the 2nd attempt and the maximum score will be 50% of the full score of the respective assignment.
Any late submission beyond 4 weeks of the pre‐set deadline will NOT be marked and NO further attempt will be offered.
A. Group ProjectCourse participants will be divided into groups to work on a project. The design of the project should aim at improvement of patient care or clinical services.
Target dates *All submissions will be sent to responsible mentor by email before deadlines andsupplemented with hard copySubmission of project topic: 24 Mar 2021 Submission of project outline: 14 Apr 2021 Submission of first draft: 16 Jun 2021 Submission of group project: 1 Sep 2021 Project presentation: 13 Sep 2021
Suggested Format for Group Project 1. Cover page with the project title, name of course participants and their parent
hospitals2. Table of contents3. Introduction of the project4. Rationale and significance5. The project design & planning6. The implementation7. Discussion / Evaluation8. Conclusion / Recommendation9. References
Word limit for the group project is 2,000 – 3,000 (with at least 10 references).
The desirable presentation time is 20 minutes.
Course participants are encouraged to seek advice from the Visiting Lecturers / Departmentof Operations at all times.

Guideline for Patient Care Study
B. Patient Care StudyCourse participants are required to select a patient whom he/she has nursed during theclinical practicum period and write a patient care study. It is expected that courseparticipants will apply their knowledge in Gerontological nursing to formulate a careplan using a problem solving approach.
Course participants are encouraged to follow the continuous care for the selectedpatient through acute, extended and community care settings.
Target dates
*All submission will be sent to responsible clinical mentor by email before deadlines
and supplemented with hard copy
Submission of first draft: 2 weeks after chosen of case
Submission of case study report: 2 weeks after clinical practicum (12.09.2021)
- The date of submission of the drafted Patient Care Study would be agreed between
candidate and clinical mentor.
- The word limit for the Patient Care Study is 2,500 – 3,000
