Eastern Caribbean

On the ECSE last week, shares of TDC traded at $11.00, a decrease of two dollars on its last market close; and shares of East Caribbean Financial

Holding traded firm at $11.00.

The results of a consultation conducted by the IMF, has confirmed that the Dominican economy grew by an estimated 4% in 2006, the strongest in nearly two decades. According to the report, the strong GDP growth was achieved due to gains in tourism, construction, services and the banana sub-sector.

Trinidad NCB Jamaica, First Caribbean and Trinidad Cement emerged volume leaders on the TTSE last week. The advance decline ratio was 8 to 10. Advancers included National Enterprise, Guardian Holdings and Trinidad Cement while Grace Kennedy, NCB Jamaica and RBTT were among the decliners. The fact that T&T has been able to double its GDP over the last five years has been described as “quite a remarkable achievement”. Those were the words of the IMF mission chief for T&T who said the country was enjoying revenues from developing new gas fields and its petrochemical industry and a booming

construction sector. He also noted that the economy was quite broad-based and is now experiencing the lowest unemployment on record.

Jamaica

In Jamaica all three indices saw declines. Of the 35 stocks traded there were 14 winners and 15 losers while 6 stocks traded firm. Jamaica Broilers Ltd. was the volume leader with over 36% of total volume closing up 44 cents at a price of $4.40. Other popular stocks included Cable and Wireless Jamaica Ltd. and Bank of Nova Scotia.

In other news, Alcoa Inc is making a hostile bid for Canadian aluminum rival Alcan Inc worth nearly uS$27 billion after failing in almost two years of private talks to reach a negotiated deal. Alcoa said the proposed cash-and-stock deal would create a premier diversified global aluminum company which could grow faster than the two companies could on their own.

Barbados

On the Barbados Stock Exchange, a total volume in excess of 216,000 shares traded. The top two traded companies were Barbados Shipping and FCIB both closing up and accounting for almost 47% of the units traded.

Barbadian Prime Minister, Owen Arthur has announced his Government’s plan

to take Barbados to a higher level of economic development. He noted that the Government should soon be rolling out a new five-year industrial policy and a programme to help transform the international business sector.

International u.S. stocks rallied on government reports showing abating inflation pressures, completing the sixth straight week of gains. The Dow finished with a 0.4% gain, the Nasdaq was also up for the week while the S&P was little changed. Asian stocks won, as they climbed to new highs while European stocks were also on the upside. The uS dollar continued to decline against other currencies due to a slowing uS economy. And in commodities oil prices fell for the week and gold was on the increase.

And finally, in keeping with our mission to educate & develop the Capital Markets of the Caribbean, CMMB will host the 5th in its “Intelligent Investing” series of semi-nars entitled – understanding Investment Jargon, on Tuesday 15th May at Cara Suites from 5:00 pm. The general pub-lic is invited to attend this free seminar as it will provide participants with a greater understanding of jargon used within the financial markets.

The history of technology is at least as old as humankind, if not older. Primitive tools have been discovered with almost ev-ery find of ancient human remains.[7] Ar-chaeologists have uncovered tools made by humanity’s ancestors more than two million years ago,[8] and the earliest direct evidence of tool usage, found in the Great Rift Valley, dates back to 2.5 million years ago.[9] The hunter-gatherer lifestyle, characteristic of the Lower Paleolithic era, involved a limited use of technology, and the earliest tools, such as the handaxe and scraper, were developed to aid early humans in that role.[10][11] The discovery and utilisation of fire, a sim-ple energy source with many profound uses, was a turning point in the technological evo-lution of humankind.[12] The exact date of its discovery is not known; evidence of burnt animal bones at the Cradle of Humankind site suggests that the domestication of fire occurred before 1,000,000 BCE;[13] schol-arly consensus indicates that Homo erectus had controlled fire by between 500,000 BCE and 400,000 BCE.[14][15] Fire, fueled with wood and charcoal, allowed early humans to cook their food to increase its digestibility, improving its nutrient value and broadening

the number of foods that could be eaten.[16] Other technological advances made dur-ing the Paleolithic era were clothing and shelter; the adoption of both technologies cannot be dated exactly, but they were key to humanity’s progress. As the Paleolithic era progressed, dwellings became more so-phisticated and more elaborate; as early as 380,000 BCE, humans were constructing temporary wood huts.[17][18] Clothing, adapted from the fur and hides of hunted animals, helped humanity expand into colder regions; humans began to migrate out of Af-rica by 200,000 BCE and into other conti-nents, such as Eurasia.[19] A more sophisticated toolmaking tech-nique was developed at around the same time. Known as the prepared-core technique, it enabled the creation of more controlled and consistent flakes, which could be haft-ed onto wooden shafts as arrows.[citation needed] This new technique helped to form more efficient composite tools and weapons, and combined with fire, this new technique enabled humans to hunt more effectively; wooden spears with fire-hardened points have been found as early as 250,000 BCE. Technological developments in the Upper

Paleolithic era, helped by the development of language, included advances in flint tool manufacturing, with industries based on fine blades rather than simple flakes.[citation needed] Humans began to work bones, ant-ler, and hides, as evidenced by burins and ra-cloirs produced during this period. engineers to create new tools and machines, such as semiconductors, computers, and other forms of advanced technology. In this sense, scien-tists and engineers may both be considered technologists; the three fields are often con-sidered as one for the purposes of research and reference

CRICKET

By Colin CroftFormer West Indies fast bowler

It takes determination, guts and maybe even madness to be a good

fast bowler For an explanation of why, you could ask my friend Dr Tim Noakes, the director of the Sports Sciences Centre in Cape Town, where South Africa’s elite athletes train and undergo various tests. He says: “It is absolutely impossible for the body to go through so many contortions, and to allow so many muscles, sinews and bones to go through that enormous amount of stresses, for fast bowling to be natural and safe for humans.” At the height of the West Indies dominance of world cricket in the 1970s and ‘80s, we had at least seven fast bowlers to choose from, but they were all different bio-mechanically. So what are the technical issues affecting the performance of the current pace attack?

JEROME TAYLORTaylor is perhaps the most aesthetic of the present day West Indian bowlers and does generate some genuine pace. More

like Malcolm Marshall than Michael Holding, he bounds in towards delivery and runs through the crease nicely. Just at the delivery point, though, his head drops away to the left side of vertical, so his arms, both the balancing left and the bowling right, are also pulled in the same direction. This results in the ball being directed away from the ‘straight to the stump’ corridor. What he needs to do more is stand up taller in delivery, continue to run through the crease, then bring his bowling arm closer to his right ear in delivery. That would improve his returns greatly.

COREY COLLYMORE Collymore used to be quite fast when he started to play at the top level, but back problems and the way he runs have negated his speed. Unlike many fast bowlers, he is heavily dependent of the heel of the foot doing the propulsion. All sprinters would tell you that the ball of the foot and the toes must be the parts that touch the ground most. Collymore also allows his bowling arm and his lead arm to cross each other in front of his torso, entirely incorrect by all safe practices of bio-mechanics. His accuracy is good, but he will have to take great care of his body on this tour.

DAREN POWELL Of the current squad, Powell probably bowls with the best rhythm. He bounds in to the crease like a hurdler, but he loses energy and longevity because he is almost always on his toes and not the balls of his feet. The pace does not come from acceleration arising from contact with the ground as it would if he ran in like a 200 or 400 metre runner. He is slower than Taylor, but sometimes he makes up for it with better accuracy.

FIDEL EDWARDS Edwards, like Sri Lanka’s Lasith Malinga, is a slinger - perhaps a style developed from that of the great Australian Jeff Thomson, although

he looked like a javelin thrower in approach, delivery and follow through. Edwards is a bit quicker than Malinga running in and normally the rhythm from both is good. They then extend their last delivery stride, perhaps over-stretching the torso and the back, to propel the ball like slingshots. With practice, they get it right most of the time. It must be very difficult to coach these two, except to help them with rhythm and strength, since there is nothing ‘normal’ about the delivery. The stress on their back, torso and every part of the legs is massive. Fitness is the key.

RAVI RAMPAUL Rampaul is just coming back from a spate of injuries and will have to be very careful that he does not have a recurrence. He certainly needs to work harder at his fitness. He is not that tall but does generate good speed from a relatively short run-up, but his greatest challenge is that he will have to try hard to extend his follow-through. He stops much too quickly after delivery and that puts additional stresses on his back. Additionally, he is more of an ‘arm bowler’ than one who uses the momentum of his run to generate speed but that deficiency is offset by his energy and youth. Hopefully, he has a long career ahead of him but he will have to iron out the short follow-through, and allow his hands to do more propulsive work for his deliveries.

DARREN SAMMY Sammy would have the best build among the fast bowlers but is still a little spindly and needs to put on some pounds, in the right places. He has great elasticity, a good attribute for any fast moving athlete, but when he tries to bowl quickly, his head leads his body in the sway away from the vertical, like Jerome Taylor. His enthusiasm, though, sometimes overcomes the deficiencies and with good fitness, good strengthening and good coaching of the basics, he could become a fine cricketer.

Windies pacemen built for speed?
