Eastern caribbean Mild activity was recorded on the EcsE with cable

JAMAicA the Jamaican markets posted positive results as 12 stocks advanced and 20 declined. Jamaica Broilers ltd, cable & Wireless and ncB Jamaica were the more popular stocks accounting for over 68% of total volumes. Advancers were led by carreras while First caribbean, sagicor and Grace Kennedy were among the decliners. . the Jamaican Government, last week raised Us$350 million on the international capital markets, through a 10-year placement that was fully subscribed. the 2019 notes were issued at a coupon rate of 8.0 per cent and priced to yield 8.375 per cent, which is about 400 basis points above comparable Us treasuries.
BARBADos sagicor led volumes on the BsE with over 470,000 shares changing ownership. Price increases for neal &
Massy and trinidad cement pushed the cross list index up over 40 points while the local index increased by over 7 points after BnB, cable & Wireless, Goddard Enterprises and insurance corporation of Barbados all recorded price increases. sagicor has recorded a steady increase in share price on the london stock Exchange. sagicor was the first caribbean firm to break into the london equity market, on February 14 last year, with its stock trading at BDs$3.88 per share. By the close of trading last week sagicor’s share price had reached BDs$6.17, a 37% increase in 16 months.
intERnAtionAl And finally on the international front, Us stocks tumbled last week amidst widening credit market losses which are set to reach $400 billion globally. in commodities & currencies news, gold reached over $910 as a weaker dollar – which was down 1.5% last week - and record commodity prices sparked demand for precious metals as a hedge against inflation.
RiM’s expanding BlackBerry pie
Research in Motion is set to show whether it can keep defying the slumping economy and the slowdown in mobile phone sales, and withstand the looming threat of Apple’s iPhone. All eyes will turn to the Waterloo, ontario tech shop when it reports its fiscal first quarter results after the market closes Wednesday. And you can be sure the crowd will be looking for the slightest cracks in the growth picture. tech investors have placed a big bet on the BlackBerry maker, pushing the stock price and expectations to an all-time high in the past week. RiM (RiMM) has managed to outrun the other giants of tech this year on the strength of its expanding business e-mail niche and the increased popularity of smartphones. For those keeping score, RiM is up 25% for the year while two other tech leaders Google (GooG, Fortune 500) and Apple (AAPl, Fortune 500) are down 21% and 12% respectively. Analysts expect RiM to post fiscal first quarter adjusted earnings of 85 cents a share, more than double the pro forma profit of 39 cents a year ago. sales are also on a momentous clip, climbing 110%
to to $2.27 billion by analysts’ estimates. the looming concern, of course is whether RiM’s BlackBerry machine can keep on humming. the gravity of global recession and the pressure of Apple’s head-on competition suggests not. But analysts and wireless industry observers say there’s plenty of room to run. surprisingly, since the iPhone launch announcement, BlackBerry has continued to make gains and record strong subscriber growth, says cci analyst Michael cote. the market in question is smartphones. While the worldwide mobile phone market has slowed to about 10% growth this year coming off a 17% run in 2007, the smartphone segment has been gathering steam. smartphone sales increased 29% from year-ago levels in the first quarter, according to Gartner. smartphones made up about 10% of total phone sales last year and they are expected to take 31% of the market in 2013, says research shop ABi. now, as the BlackBerry and the iPhone gain popularity outside north America, they start to chew up some of no.1 phone maker nokia’s prime turf.
& Wireless st. Kitts & nevis traded down 83 cents to close at $6.50 and st. Kitts nevis Anguilla national Bank traded firm at $2.90. in other news, on June 23rd, the Government of st. Vincent & the Grenadines auctioned Ec$16 million of 91 day treasury Bills. the minimum investment for participation in this issue was Ec$5000.00
tRiniDADthe volume leaders on the trinidad stock Exchange were sagicor and scotia DBG investments. the advance decline ratio was 13 to 5 with sagicor and Ansa Merchant Bank leading the advancers, gaining a dollar and 85 cents respectively, while Republic Bank and Grace Kennedy were among the decliners. in news from trinidad, bonds worth an initial value of $1.2 billion are to be issued immediately by the t&t Government, as part of its plan
Apple’s and RiMM “have been growing faster than the market and nokia’s market share in recent quarters has slipped from as high as 50% to closer to 45%,” RBc analyst Mark sue writes in a research note tuesday.
RiM’s Bold move so what will fuel the momentum? Analyst pin their hopes on Bold, the 3G BlackBerry expected to hit the shelves at At&t (t, Fortune 500) in August. this was a critical delay from the June-July debut that had been widely expected, and a late entry given the iPhone’s subsidized arrival July 11. But the Bold is expected to trigger a new buying cycle as BlackBerry owners look to trade in their slower phones for the sleeker, faster new model. People tend to see this wrongly as an Apple-versus-RiM competition, says cci’s cote. “But i think it shows that there are two players that know what they are doing. the pie continues to grow, and while it grows both companies increase their share.” RiM fans can probably accept that its a two player race, but they are certainly putting their money on one to win.

Australia completed a clinical victory over West indies by 84 runs in the first Digicel one-Day international that was marred by a bottle-throwing incident at the Arnos Vale sports complex on tuesday. Minutes before Australia dismissed West indies for 189 in 39.5 overs as the hosts chased a target of 274 in 50 overs, spectators in two stands at the ground threw plastic bottles on the field
Australia lead 1-0 in the Digicel oDi
series
in protest to the dismissal of Darren sammy. there were doubts over whether the ball from left-arm fast bowler nathan Bracken had hit the stumps or come from the pad of wicketkeeper Brad Haddin. television replays confirmed that sammy was bowled but some incensed spectators in the south-eastern and south-western sections of the ground started to throw bottles. it held up play for 12 minutes and after calm was restored, Australia wrapped up the victory four balls after the resumption to take a 1-0 series lead. Bracken also took the last wicket to finish with four for 31 from 5.5 overs as West indies batted disappointingly in front of a near capacity crowd.
sammy and Dwayne Bravo hit the joint top score of 33, while wicketkeeper Denesh Ramdin contributed 31 and debutant Andre Fletcher 26, but West indies were under pressure from the time fast bowler Brett le grabbed two early wickets to leave them 29 for three. Bravo and Fletcher added 51 for the fourth wicket, while Ramdin and sammy put on 52 for the seventh wicket but West indies were never in the hunt. After lee had Xavier Marshall caught by the keeper from a loose stroke, skipper chris Gayle was lbw to Bracken and three balls later lee had Ramnaresh sarwan caught at second slip to put the hosts under pressure from which they never recovered.

novak Djokovic was upset in straight sets by Marat safin in the second round at Wimbledon on Wednesday, ending the serb’s chances of testing his theory about Roger Federer’s vulnerability.Federer, meanwhile, looked far from vulnerable in reaching the third round with a 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 (3) win over sweden’s Robin soderling. Djokovic came up against one of the toughest second-round opponents he could have drawn. Former no. 1 safin has won two Grand slam titles. one came when he upset Federer in an Australian open semifinal en route to the 2005 title. safin beat Djokovic in the first round of that tournament — their only previous meeting. “it was certainly a very bad day for me,” the 21-year-old Djokovic said. “i didn’t do anything that i was supposed to — he was very solid in all segments.” Djokovic had said Federer, bidding for his sixth consecutive Wimbledon crown, was vulnerable after his recent lopsided French open loss to no. 2-ranked Rafael nadal. the hype surrounding those comments set up the possibility of an enticing semifinal here. now, it will be safin who will try to go down that path. But not before offering some thoughts on what led to his victory over Djokovic.
no. 3 seed Djokovic stunned at
Wimbledon
“(He) didn’t impress me with his game today. i could read his serve. i could return,” the 28-year-old Russian said. “i could stay with him from the baseline, and that’s it.” safin said he came in under the radar, and that Djokovic had all the pressure. “He’s the one who has to win matches. For me, nobody expects anything,” said safin, admitting that he had not dared look beyond the second round. “the guy won the Australian open, semifinals of French open, winning tournaments left and right. You play against him, and the last time i won two matches in a row was i don’t remember when. so what do you expect? “now, i’ll have to check — the way i’m playing now, i could go far.” Djokovic seemed to be vulnerable himself, playing on a surface he is not entirely comfortable on and struggling with his serve in a blustery breeze. After saving three match points, he served a double-fault to give his Russian opponent a fourth, then double-faulted for the 10th time to concede. “i was serving a lot of double-faults, which is unusual,” said Djokovic, who was broken twice in each of the first and third sets and only broke safin’s serve once. “i was just not finding my momentum.” the top-ranked Federer recovered a break in the third set to secure the straight-sets victory on his second match point in the tiebreaker. soderling needed treatment for a blister on his left foot during the second set. He did achieve something nobody else has done against Federer on grass this season — breaking the swiss star’s serve once. lleyton Hewitt, the only other Wimbledon champion in the men’s draw, also survived
court 2 with a 7-6 (4), 6-0, 6-2 win over Albert Montanes of spain that was much quicker than his opening five-setter. After his loss, Djokovic shook his head as he walked forward, and hugged safin across the net. Djokovic said he might have had too much respect for safin’s obvious but often erratic talent. “safin is a player who is known as a big talent, but again, he makes a lot of unforced errors,” he said. “i had opportunities, but i just made some unforced errors, which were really uncharacteristic, without any sense. “safin still has his ups and downs, and is known for his mental instability in some ways, but he’s still a great player. He wants to step it up again. (today) he was mentally there.” Grass is not safin’s favorite surface, either. Wimbledon is the only major where he has not advanced beyond the quarterfinals. But he is a dangerous opponent now. He next plays 29th-seeded Andreas seppi, who beat Florent serra 6-3, 6-7 (4), 6-2, 6-7 (5), 6-4. Federer is most at home on grass — he is on a 60-match winning streak on the surface. He had a potentially tough second-round match later Wednesday on centre court against sweden’s Robin soderling. stanislas Wawrinka, Federer’s 13th-seeded swiss countryman, beat Juan Martin del Potro 7-6 (5), 6-3, 7-5 and American Bobby Reynolds had a 4-6, 7-6 (10), 6-4, 6-4 victory over canadian Frank Dancevic, who had ousted no. 7 David nalbandian in the opening round. Another former no. 1, Juan carlos Ferrero, had to retire with a leg injury in the third set when he was behind 6-4, 6-4, 2-1 to 20-year-old Mischa Zverev.
