CONNECTING POLICY TO REAL-TIME SOLUTIONS
18th September 2019 | ICC Birmingham
Post-Event Report
The purpose of the Smart Transport Conferences is to add clarity to
the shared challenges facing the UK transport sector, find practical
solutions and provide a road map towards the introduction of multi
modal, integrated transport in the UK, through strategic public private
partnerships at local and national government levels.
This focus on connecting policy to solutions ensures our conferences
are not simply a talking shop for technology companies and suppliers
to simply talk to each other. Instead, Smart Transport Conferences
provide a platform for networking, collaboration and knowledge
transfer with senior smart transport experts on the practical steps
needed for private sector solutions to turn the government’s
vision into a reality.
Carlota Da Veiga Pestana, Smart Transport Lead, Bauer Media
‘Smart Transport’ starts from challenging the silos in transport and
mobility - between local and national, public and private, the motor
industry and transport services - and seeks to break them down and
get people talking.
The Smart Transport Conferences in London and Birmingham have
had a really wide range of speakers from different backgrounds,
showcasing projects and initiatives that are changing the way
we get around. They have had presentations from national and
local governments setting out their future strategies and policies
on tackling air pollution and climate change, and examples of
collaboration and partnership between private and public sector
organisations showing what innovation and technology can do to
make transport better for all.
Stephen Joseph, Smart Transport Chair

There’s a huge opportunity through different technologies but if we don’t have the right support both at local and at government level they may not actually be able to deliver what we need within a time frame that we would like to experience. It’s a great privilege to be with so many people who are very passionate and very knowledgeable about the industry and I have really got a lot out of being here today.
Edward Clarke (Attendee), Managing Director, Operations, FedEx Express
10
The Smart Transport Conference is an excellent opportunity to gather the insights to enable us to accelerate the transition to zero-emission vehicles and also to develop the mobility solutions and services that cities and their citizens want.
Dr Jo Dally (Speaker), Global Head
of City Partnerships, Lead for the
Advanced Mobility Unit, BP
11
The opportunity for zero-emission, zero fatality and zero congestion is something that we have a shared opportunity to benefit from. The key challenges and opportunities in realising these eco systems are in having a single-minded approach and the right partners around the table to be able to deliver some of the opportunities that we’re looking to bring to the market today.
Carl Bayliss (Speaker), VP, Mobility &
Home Energy, Centrica
12
Smart Transport Conference gives us a great opportunity to bring partners together and to collaborate moving forward. The transport industry, historically, hasn’t had that fast paced mindset and so one of our challenges is how do we move forward at pace and adopt new ideas and new innovative technologies without necessarily knowing they’re all going to be successful.
Tony Caccavone (Speaker), Surface Access Director, Heathrow
13
We run cars and vans, so we have to adapt and adopt. This is one of the best places to learn about it and also to share our experience into what we’re hearing from our customers. One of the challenges is disseminating what is here and now, what’s in three or four-years’ time and what’s in five to ten years’ time and making that reality through collaboration between public and private.
