Message from the Councilor: Greetings from Denver! Alfonso (Dr. Aguilera, Chair) and I are here at the Fall Meeting. It is very exciting, seeing lots of old friends, making new ones, and getting motivated for the Annual Session while enjoying the beautiful weather in Colorado. We attended almost 3 days of informational sessions and collaboration. The theme was "Embracing access, diversity, and inclusion". We were entertained and educated by Ms Sarah Jones (from Broadway and Sesame Street) as she portrayed numerous characters from a wide range of backgrounds that are often inadequately addressed in health care delivery. We also heard from Dr. Alma Clayton-Pederson who discussed the challenges in making diversity and inclusion core to institutional mission and values. Dr. David Waldschmidt, from the ADA and Joint Commission, discussed recent developments in the National Board Dental Examination pass/fail transition and score reporting. Friday ended with a thought provoking presentation by ADEA Past-President Dr. Charles Bertolami (Dean, NYU) on entitled "Moving Ethics Curricula Forward: A Mere State of Mind". It was an incredible meeting and has set the stage for the upcoming Annual Session in March. See you in Seattle! Highlights from the Fall Meeting

• 2013 Annual Session: There was engaging discussion regarding program acceptance for the upcoming Annual Session. Unfortunately, our Section program was not accepted........

• Jeopardy: Monique had us play the infamous game to test our knowledge on the ADEA Bylaws. We did pretty good!

• President's Message: Dr. Gerry Glickman discussed his focus leading up to the Annual Session: Evaluating the cost of dental education-a joint task force with the ADA, updating the ADEA website, and the Presidential Symposium-his topic is the controversial new work-place model.

• Update from the Admin Board:

• Dr. Sharon Siegel (Chair, COS Admin Bd) updated the Council on the strategic direction. Our priorities are aligned with ADEA and include sharing models of cost effective education, professional developmental programming/resources for new educators, tackling the access problem and encouraging collaboration among sections. The Admin Bd has also developed a toolkit for the website and sent out the inaugural issue of the COS Newsletter.

• Dr. Mike Landers (VP, COS Admin Bd) is our representative on the APSC (Annual Session Programming Committee). He said that there were 185 programs submitted and 96 accepted (approximately 26 from COS). This equates to around 186 hours of programming (13 occurring at one time). He pointed out that this upcoming session will be one day shorter due to AADR/IADR being the same week. He discussed the challenges of selecting programs and stressed the importance of following the rubric (collaboration, credentials of speakers, relevance to theme, etc) to be selected. He also updated us on the ADEA

reorganization of offices/positions.

•Dr. Keith Mays (Secretary, COS Admin Bd) discussed the Program Fund: This is the fund's first year. The COS approved 7 programs- 4 of which were selected for the Annual Session.

ADEA is hosting a virtual fair for dental students in February! Proposed dates are Saturday Feb 2 or 9, 11:00 am-5:00 pm EST. The purpose is to present post grad options to students. Exhibitors will be the multitude of dental specialties/residencies, academic dentistry, corporate dentistry, and military dentistry. Our PGD section will host an exhibit booth for AEGD/GPR programs. We will have "handouts" that describe typical opportunities we offer and common entrance requirements. We will also provide a list of all the programs and director contact info/website. As this is in the initial stages, we are open to ALL suggestions! We also need volunteers to "man our booth"-answer questions in a "chat room"-at least two volunteers per two hour shift. Now I am technically challenged, but I was able to figure it out. You can work the booth from any computer/Internet. ADEA will host a webinar for training. The caveat is that we are representing all residencies. If this fair is a success, we may be able to expand it to an AEGD/GPR fair in the future. Come on, give it a try! If you are interested in volunteering for the booth, want to contribute to our handouts, or just have questions, please contact me! ([email protected]) You can try out the booth by going to http://cs.expos2events.com/adea/event/ Register for an account and then enter the exhibit. The fair you are visiting is from the 2012 summer Dental School fair. The content remains online after the fair is over for students to visit in the future.
