Deal now with summer plant diseasesBY PHIL MEEKS
Humidity and precipitation like we’veseen this summer lead to reports fromgrowers on unhealthy plants.
Hot and wet conditions are ideal for ahost of diseases that can impact vegeta-bles, fruits and ornamentals. Tomatoesseem to be the hardest hit, while viningcrops like pumpkins and cucumbers areclose behind, but most plants are prone toissues. Here are a few tips for dealingwith plant diseases during the summer:
• Know what you’re dealing with. A lotof plant disorders have similar symptoms, and it can be tough to distinguish a fungaldisease from a bacterial disease from anutrient deficiency in a lot of circum-
stances. The Plant Disease Clinic at Virginia
Tech can run a series of diagnostic tests topin down exactly what’s causing the prob-lem. If you want to send off a sample, thelab requires as much of the plant as possi-ble. Just a handful of diseased leaves typ-ically aren’t enough for a reliable diagno-sis.
• Prevention is easier than a cure. There’s little chance of reversing someproblems once they go so far. Therefore,it’s important to monitor plants thorough-ly. Inspect your gardens and landscapes atleast weekly during the summer, and tryto catch problems in the early stages.Often, once a disease is full-blown, itcan’t be stopped.
• Solutions to plant diseases don’t justcome in bottles. If you’ve had an issuewith XYZ disease for the past few years, you’re likely to have that issue next year.Consider combatting that with varietiesresistant to the particular problem, ifavailable.
For instance, if verticillium wilt hasbeen found in your garden in years past, there are a number of varieties that areresistant to this specific disease. Again, though, you may not know you have ver-ticillium unless you’ve sent a sample tothe lab.
• A well-tended plant will have someresistance of its own. Proper pruning andirrigation can go a long way towards pre-venting disease pressures, as can crop
rotation and wise fertility management.Soil testing is always a good idea, as pHlevels need to be in the right range forhealthy plant development. Mulching willconserve moisture as well as provide abarrier against some soil-borne diseases.
The Extension office has access todetailed information on a long list of plantproblems, as well as treatment optionsavailable to both home and commercialgrowers. Master Gardeners, too, will beable to get this information for you, astheir training has included information onplant pathology and soil fertility.
Call Extension for more information328-6194 or email [email protected].
