On Saturday, June 9, stu-dents from Lion and
Lamb Karate in Big StoneGap traveled to
Sevierville, Tenn. to com-pete in the Karate for
Christ InternationalChampionships. The
tournament had competi-tions in forms, sparring,weapons and grappling,
and students from acrossthe Southeast came to
take part in the competi-tion. John Ryan Hurley,right with Barry Bandy,won first in forms, sec-
ond in sparring and sec-ond in grappling. AaronBrummitt, far right, won
second in sparring, grap-pling and weapons and
third in forms.

Lester was an educator inthe Wise County school sys-tem retiring after 38 years ofservice. Larry Joe Hill, aretired assistant superintend-ent with Wise CountySchools, called him “one ofthe most ethical men I everworked with. He was very,very competent. He knewhis job and he knew how toget things done. He hadgreat people skills and didthings in a way he didn’ttake credit for himself forthe things he accomplished.”
Lester also served a termon the Big Stone Gap Town
Council. CurrentCouncilman LeonardRogers said that Lester wasone of the best council mem-bers he ever served with. “Ithought he did a super greatjob in everything and hegave everything a lot ofthought before he made hisdecisions.” One of his mot-tos, “The Grit to Persevere,”lived on with him to his finalday. He exemplified thiseach and every day of hislife. To him the importantthing in life was the journeyand how one got to his or hergoal. Working hard and stay-ing true to your beliefs werestaples that he lived by.Lester felt each day was anopportunity to touch thelives of people in a positiveway, and was constantlyhelping his family, friendsand neighbors.
