MAY/JUNE 2015 PreK-12 PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT CALENDAR
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTION
1) Who needs to take Dyslexia Awareness this year?
Pursuant to Act 1294 of 2013, educators are required to be knowledgeable about information on dyslexia awareness. All certified educators should view the following module found in AR IDEAS. Dyslexia: A Three Part Professional Development http://lms-1.aetn.org/?redir+course&id=1003917
2) Can I count federally-supported PD toward the requirement of 36 hours for license renewal and the 60 hours PD requirement?
No. Effective November 1, 2010, we revised our LRSD Sign-in Roster Sheet to reflect the Federal as a type of PD type when supported with federal monies (i.e., Title I, II, III, Carl Perkins, grants, etc.). The State of Arkansas requires that teachers who hold a standard license earn 36 hours annually for license renewal yearly. The State also requires district to place in their school calendar 10 days of professional development. To that end, LRSD still requires 60 hours of PD annually. Supplanting does not allow us to count any PD supported with federal dollars toward a state/local requirements.
When a teacher has reached his/her 36-60 hours, one can then count or supplement his hours above these hours using federally supported PD earned hours.
REMINDERS
The following activities DO NOT COUNT• Administrative or committee meetings
as professional development:
• Follow-up planning meetings filled with tasks and routines • After-school events, programs, or activities • Every conversation or activity is • Activities of service to school and district contribution that best
belongs to Domain 4D
not professional development.
• Explanation of Types of PD Credit
• In-service - is where hours are earned on contractual time • Salary credit (SC) - is a type of professional development credit
where 3 or more approved, off-contract hours have been approved for salary credit.
• Stipend – is where participants are paid and receive PD credit for the time spent at a workshop.
• Federal or Federal SC – is a PD credit that is recognized as supported by federal dollars.
This type of PD does NOT count toward the mandated 36 hours for license renewal or the required 60 hours.
Coming Soon! The Approved Summer
(June/July 2015) PD Calendar will be released in early June 2015.
