Post 9/11 GI Bill transfer
Citation preview
Do you want to know about transferring your GI Bill to one of your dependants?
You MAY be eligible for Chapter 33, Post-9/11 GI Bill benefits, and you MAY be
eligible to transfer those benefits. However, if you are eligible, you may incur an
additional service obligation if you have not yettransferred your benefits to a
qualifying dependent. This e-mail explains your Post-9/11 GI Bill options and
upcoming transfer deadlines, as well as providing you important contact
information.
If you transfer your Post-9/11 GI Bill benefits, you MUST transfer them prior to
your separation from service (i.e., retirement). Please note: Soldiers currently
serving in the Individual Ready Reserve or Inactive National Guard are not
eligible to transfer their Post-9/11 GI Bill benefits. If you are eligible to transfer,
and once you complete your transfer request, you may be subject to additional
service according to the following retirement eligibility categories under the DOD
exceptions to service obligation. You also can find this information in most of
the published materials regarding the Post-9/11 GI Bill or on the
www.gibill.va.gov website.
a. For individuals eligible for retirement on 1 August 2009, no additional service
is required.
b. For individuals eligible for retirement after 1 August 2009, and before 1
August 2010, 1 year of additional service is required.
c. For individuals eligible for retirement on or after 1 August 2010, and before 1
August 2011, 2 years of additional service is required.
d. For individuals eligible for retirement on or after 1 August 2011, and
before 1 August 2012, 3 years of additional service is required.
These exceptions only exist until 1 August 2013. After 1 August 2013, all
Soldiers will incur 4-year service obligations as part of the education benefits
transfer process. Therefore, if you intend to transfer your Post-9/11 GI Bill
benefits to a dependent, it is in your best interest to do it immediately.
