COMMANDER’S CORNERThis year we are beginning our yearlong 100th Anniversary celebration of the

American Legion and more importantly the commemoration of Post 208’s 100th year. TheAmerican Legion was founded by war weary veterans to remember the men and womenof World War I and their service to our country. Many of our stories began with a letterfrom our dear Uncle Sam, a draft notice. Some of us realized the draft was inevitable andchose to enter the service of our choice. Some of us entered a fully volunteer servicebecause the draft was no longer used. As we were shipped off to boot camp and werestripped of our civilian habits, haircuts and lifestyles, we were taught to work with othersto accomplish the objective of our military branch. During boot camp we learned themilitary way and no other way was accepted. Those interested in being individualsquickly learned that the group was mightier than the individual. We learned to watch outfor one another and built a force that does not compromise or accept defeat. We workedas a family often putting others ahead of self. No matter where we served we answeredthe call of our country and Uncle Sam sent us to serve where we were needed. Thelessons we learned along the way formed us into a fighting force that is recognized aroundthe world. World War I was where our American Legion story began and as veterans wecontinue to build our force as the largest Veterans Service Organization in the world.

Recently the Department of Missouri updated our membership goal for the 2018-2019 membership year. This year the Department of Missouri has set our goal at 570members, which was reduced by 5 from the previous years goal. This is the first time thatI recall our membership goal dropping from the previous year. Over the past 5 years Post208 has reached our yearly goal all while showing continuous growth, a legacy we shouldbe very proud of and want to protect. Our Post goal this year will continue to follow thepath we started 5 years ago, and that will be to continue to show growth on our previousyear total. This will allow us to make the Department goal and continue to build on ourpast performance.

We accomplish this by engaging with our community. Some of the events thatcontinue to promote our Post and allow this engagement to continue is our AL’s NearlyWorld Famous Fish Fry, the first and third Friday of each month and then weekly

October – December 2018throughout Lent, our Ladies Auxiliary Poppy Days, our S.A.L. GI Breakfast, the secondSunday of each month, our Bingo, every Thursday night, our “Shake the Can” fundraiserat Wal-Mart, our community events like the City of Manchester Veteran’s Day Breakfast, serving on Monday November 12, various children’s events like Breakfast with Santa, andthe “shop with a cop” program, and the recently completed Manchester Homecoming. These are just a few events that are open to the community and our members have anopportunity to interact with potential members. All of these are example of anopportunity for our members to promote the American Legion and Ladies Auxiliary, theSons of the American Legion and the Legion Riders, and ask them to join or ranks. So bethe person that starts the conversation because many of the people we recruit have simplynever been asked to join.

I also want to encourage you to watch our calendar for member only events likeour volunteer appreciation dinner on Saturday October 27. With our anniversary yearupon us, there will be events offered at the National, State and local levels that will beadded as we receive notification. So don’t take a seat on the sideline, step out on to theplaying field and take part in something bigger than yourself. And as always, see you atthe Post! For God and Country, Michael D. Beasley, Commander

ADJUTANT’S CORNERMEMBERSHIP:The Post membership is currently at 575 members and has increased every year since 2013. Post 208 is the largest Post out of 23 in the 10th District. Our goal for 2019 is to recruit new members and transfers in order to continue our year over year increase in membership. I have indicated at numerous meetings all 575 members are recruiters. It’s thecurrent membership’s responsibility to continue our growth. All members need to have available the American Legion Membership Application form. Forms are available at the Post. The Post 2019 membership renewal is currently at 57% or 330 members. It’s important that the membership pay their 2019 dues by December 31, 2018. When dues are paid timely, it allows the 1st Vice-Commander and Adjutant to focus on recruiting new membersand transfers, instead of spending time mailing or calling current members to pay their dues.Annual dues are $35.00 dollars and can be paid by mailing a check payable to the American Legion Post 208 or by going to the following website: www.legion.org.REMINDER:The National Convention for 2019 will be held in St. Louis and will recognize the Legion’s100 years. I am confident The Walter Le Pere Post 208 will be recognized at the Convention, if the post increases its membership and achieves 100% membership renewal for 2019 by December 31, 2018. HOME BOARDThe Post events for the past three months were a success thanks to the legion family of volunteers. A special thanks to all the volunteers who worked the wine and beer booths at the Manchester Homecoming, during less than desirable weather conditions. The success of the events planned for the next three months, once again requires the need for volunteers to work Fish Fry’s, Air Show Fund Raiser, Walmart Fund Raiser, and other events.

Gina Falvey has volunteered to be the Post Hall Rental Manager. Gina is the facility manager at The Engineers’ Club of St. Louis and a 24-year member of the American Legion Auxiliary. All future Hall Rentals need to be coordinated through Gina Falvey by phone at 239-209-2475 or by email at [email protected].

The Post needs someone to run the 2019 Golf Tournament. The Individual will be responsible for contacting local merchants for donations and coordinating the event with a local golf club and at the Post. If interested in this job, please contact Harold Isom at 314-749-2702 or by email at [email protected].

SAL NEWSIt’s already the last quarter of the year, the time has gone by quickly. Fish fries are starting and volunteers are always welcome. Thanks to all who helped at our breakfast and for all the condolences on the passing of my mother it means a lot.For God and Country, Dave Hallett, SAL Commander
