University Entry

At the end of two years Post-16 study many studentswill want to progress to the next level of education

and seek to enter university.

The RSA Academy will assist students in making theiruniversity applications through UCAS (Universities and

Colleges Admissions Services) early in Year 13.

We will also pay each of our student’s UCASapplication fees.

When an offer is made by a university to a student it iscommonly conditional upon the student achieving a

particular set of grades which convert to UCASPOINTS.

Some sample university offers are shown below:

Level 3 Courses

These courses are suitable to students who have severalLevel 2 qualifications and a good standard of English and

Maths.

We offer THREE learning pathways at Level 3:

International Baccalaureate Diploma:Applied/Vocational Courses;

Specialised Diplomas

Entry requirements for these courses are a minimum of atleast 5 GCSEs grades A*-C including good levels of English

and mathematics.

Some courses may require you have to have a higher levelof maths, English or specialised qualifications and this is

shown in the course details.

If you are unsure about which level of course is best for youspeak to Mr Sharples, the Connexions team or any senior

member of the Academy teaching staff.

IB DiplomaThe RSA Academy is delighted to announce the launch of

The International Baccalaureate® (IB) Diploma Programmein August 2010. This course is a challenging two-year

curriculum, aimed primarily at students aged 16 to 19. Itleads to a qualification that is widely recognised by the

world’s leading universities.

IB students study a broad range of subjects (one from eachGroup) which together offer much more breadth than

traditional A Levels.

Students also complete an extended essay, theory ofknowledge and creativity, action, service. This combination

of subjects, community service and style of learningprovides a unique qualification – welcomed by universitiesand employers. Those who complete the Diploma will be

awarded not just the equivalent of between 4 – 5 A levels atgrades A* - E they will also develop the skills and qualities

necessary to flourish in higher educational settings andbeyond.

Creativity, Action &Service

The CAS requirement is a fundamental part of the IB Diploma Programme andtakes seriously the importance of life outside the world of scholarship, providing arefreshing counterbalance to academic studies.

Creativity is interpreted broadly to include a wide range of arts activities aswell as the creativity students demonstrate in designing and implementingservice projects.

Action can include not only participation in individual and team sports butalso taking part in expeditions and in local or international projects.

Service encompasses a host of community and social service activities. Someexamples include helping children with special needs, visiting hospitals andworking with refugees or homeless people.

Students are expected to be involved in CAS activities for the equivalent of about6 hours per week during enrichment for the 2 years of the Diploma Programme.

Self-evaluation encourages students to reflect on the benefits of CAS participationto themselves and to others, and to evaluate the understanding and insightsacquired.

Extended Essay

The extended essay is an independent, self-directed piece of research,culminating in a 4,000-word paper. As a required component, it provides:

practical preparation for the kinds of undergraduate researchrequired at tertiary level.

an opportunity for students to engage in an in-depth study of a topicof interest within a chosen subject.

Emphasis is placed on the research process:

formulating an appropriate research question. engaging in a personal exploration of the topic communicating ideas. developing an argument.

Participation in this process develops the capacity to:

analyse synthesize, and evaluate knowledge

Students are supported throughout the process with advice and guidancefrom a supervisor who is usually a teacher at the Academy

Theory of Knowledge

The Theory of Knowledge (TOK) requirement is central to the educationalphilosophy of the Diploma Programme. Students must complete one essay of1,000 to 1,400 words chosen from a list of prescribed titles supplied by the IBO.

It offers students and their teachers the opportunity to:

reflect critically on diverse ways of knowing and on areas of knowledge consider the role and nature of knowledge in their own culture, in the

cultures of others and in the wider world.

In addition, it prompts students to:

be aware of themselves as thinkers, encouraging them to become moreacquainted with the complexity of knowledge

recognize the need to act responsibly in an increasingly interconnected butuncertain world.

As a thoughtful and purposeful inquiry into different ways of knowing, and intodifferent kinds of knowledge, TOK is composed almost entirely of questions. Themost central of these is “How do we know?”

It is a stated aim of TOK that students should become aware of the interpretativenature of knowledge, including personal ideological biases, regardless of whether,ultimately, these biases are retained, revised or rejected.

TOK also has an important role to play in providing coherence for the student sothey can apply their knowledge with greater awareness and credibility.

EnglishCourse Title: English A1 Standard and Higher Level

Number of sessions per week: 1

What is IB English?

The course is intended to foster students’ personal enjoyment of literature, as well asdeveloping their skills of empathy and tolerance for opinions other than their own: somethingespecially significant to our students.

How will I be assessed?

Internal Assessment:

What is IB French?

Ab Initio French is designed for those students wishing to learn a further language that they have not studiedbefore, for those students wishing to broaden their foreign language acquisition and for those without aformal qualification in French. There is an emphasis on language acquisition and usage. The core skillsaddressed by this course are speaking, listening, reading and writing. Students will benefit from a focus on bothpractical and social lessons.

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed at the end of the 2 Year course by examination in speaking, writing and textmanipulation.

Exam 1 – Text Handling: Finding information from French texts and answering questions.40% total (1hour 30 minutes)

Business & ManagementCourse Title: IB Business and Management Course (HL)

Number of sessions per week: 1

What is IB Business and Management?

The business and management course is designed to develop an understanding of business theory, as well as an ability to applybusiness principles, practices and skills. The course considers the diverse range of business organisations and activities and thecultural and economic context in which business operates. Emphasis is placed on strategic decision-making and the day-to-daybusiness functions of marketing, production, finance and human resource management.

The course aims to help students understand the implications of business activity in a global market. It gives students aninternational perspective of business and promotes their appreciation of cultural diversity through the study of topics, likeinternational marketing, human resource management, growth and business strategy. The business and management course placesemphasis upon developing internationally minded people who are able to recognise the extent of their decision making in nationaland international environments. Self development and awareness in line with the IB learner profile is a fundamental and integral partof the business and management course.

Internal Assessment (Research Project) 25%A Research Project (Research Proposal 200–300 words and Written Report 1800–2000 words), total 2000–2300 words, to beinternally assessed by the teacher and externally moderated by the IBO.

The Research Project must be based on a research question which:either addresses an issue facing an organization or range of organizationsor analyses a decision to be made by an organization or range of organizations.

The Research Project is will require the gathering of primary research from the organisation under investigation.

You will learn through a variety of methods to support your understanding and learning style. These include, class discussion,individual work and study, exam-focused teaching, external workshops, presentations, independent research, and a scheduledprogramme of assessment and revision to accelerate your learning.

What can I do next?The International Baccalaureate diploma is an internationally recognised university entry qualification which is offered inmore than a hundred countries throughout the world. It is fully recognised by all UK universities and across the full range ofbusiness disciplines. Students with an IB Diploma are strongly sought after by universities and employers world-wide. It isanticipated that the majority of IB students will progress to Higher Education.

HistoryCourse Title: History Higher

Number of sessions per week: 1

What is IB History?

History is more than a study of the past. It is the process of recording, reconstructing andinterpreting the past. In following this course it will give each student an understanding ofthemselves and others in relation to the world, both past and present. Students need not havestudied History prior to starting the course. The specific skills are developed throughout the 2years.

How will I be assessed?External Assessment:Paper 1 (1 Hour) One prescribed question from a choice of three the Arab-Israeli ConflictPaper 2 (1hour 30 minutes) two extended questions on Causes and Effects of War and the Cold War.Paper 3 (2 hours 30 minutes) three extended questions on Aspects of the America’s or other world historytopics.

Internal Assessment: Historical Investigation on a topic of the student’s own choice.

What is IB Psychology?

Psychology is the systematic and scientific study of the human mind and behaviour. Studypsychology and discover how an intriguing global science can help us to analyse thecomplexities of human behaviour.

How will I be assessed?

At standard level, IB students are assessed via 2 external examinations andan internally assessed replication of a psychological study. At higher level, students sit anadditional examination about qualitative research methods.

What is the Social and Cultural Anthropology?

Social and cultural anthropology is the comparative study of culture and human societies.Anthropologists seek an understanding of humankind in all its diversity. This understanding isreached through the study of societies and cultures and the exploration of the generalprinciples of social and cultural life.

How will I be assessed?

External assessment (3 hours)

Paper 1 (1 hour)Three compulsory questions based on an unseen text, covering aspects drawn from the whole syllabus. (20 marks) 30%

Paper 2 (2 hours)Ten questions based on part 2 of the syllabus. Students choose two questions to be answered in essay form. (44 marks) 50%

Two compulsory activities to be internally assessed by the teacher and externally moderated by the IB. (20 marks) 20%

BiologyIB Biology Higher Level

What is IB Biology?

Biology involves the study of a wide range of exciting topics ranging from molecular biology to the study ofecosystems and from microorganisms to mammoths. Biology is never far from the headlines either. Thehuman genome has been sequenced and we know the complete arrangement of the three thousand millionbases that make up human DNA. In Kenya 350 people die every day from AIDS and in South East Asia theskies are dark with smoke as the last Bornean rainforests are burned to grow oil palms. Biologists areconcerned with all these issues. They work in the fields of cell biology, medicine, food production andecology... and the work they do is vital to us all.

How will I be assessed?

Higher LevelExternal assessment:

Paper 1: 40 MCQ on SL and AHL materials (20%)

Paper 2: Section A: One data-based question and short answer questionsSection B: Two extended response questions (two from four) (36%)

Chemistry

Course Title: Chemistry Higher level

Number of sessions per week: 1

What is IB Chemistry?

The course is intended to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people throughinterest, enjoyment and research of chemistry.

How will I be assessed?Internal Assessment:

Group 4 project: a collaborative exercise with emphasis on the processes involved inscientific investigation.

Practical work assessment.External Assessment:

Paper 1 – 65 multiple-choice questions, 1hr. Paper 2 – section A: one data-based question and several short-answer questions.

Section B: two extended-response questions. Paper 3 – Several short-answer questions and one extended-response question in each

of the two options studies.

In what ways will I be taught?

Lessons will be interactive, include a wide range of practical activities and involve you workingwith others. You will need to use your ICT skills to demonstrate your understanding andpresent work.

PhysicsCourse Title: Physics Higher Level Number of sessions per week: 1

What is IB Physics?

Physics is the most fundamental science. It allows students to make sense of the physicalworld they live in as well as addressing the important questions of life and the universe. Itincludes a wide range of topics, stretching from the study of the behaviour and structure ofmatter and energy in a classical sense to one that involves relativity.

In what ways will I be taught?

Lessons will explore the wonderful world of physics through independent research, practicalactivity, using modelling software, problem solving and teacher-led learning. You willcollaborate with other Group 4 students on a project.

IB Physics is intended to be a rigorous course that will prepare students who intend to pursuetechnical or science oriented university studies and/or careers.

Design TechnologyCourse Title: Design Technology Number of sessions per week: 1

What is IB Design and Technology?

This programme assumes no previous knowledge of Design Technology and is suitable for the scientist(particularly a physicist) or non-science specialist. The course utilises knowledge, skills and the design processwithin problem-solving contexts and uses local and readily available resources. The design cycle is at the coreof the programme.

Standard LevelStudents study the following topics as part of the IB core:

Design Process – design cycle, generating ideas, developing concepts.

Product Innovation – designers and product cycle, invention and innovation, people and markets.

Green Design – principles, life cycle analysis and strategies for green design.

Materials – classification of materials, properties of materials, timber, metals, plastics, ceramics andcomposites.

Product Development – manufacturing techniques, craft production, mechanisation, automation andeconomic consideration.

Product Design – ergonomics and the designer in society.

Evaluation – evaluation and designing, evaluation and manufacture, evaluation and the consumer.

How will I be assessed?The external assessment at Standard Level (64%) consists of three written papers containing: multiple choice,data based, short answer and extended response questions.

The internal assessment consists of practical investigations and a group four project (18%), along with astudent driven design and manufacture project (18%). All students complete a design and manufacture basedproject lasting approximately 28hr

In what ways will I be taught?

Students will have the opportunity to undertake a range of practical projects to demonstratetheir understanding and deepen their knowledge. Industrial visits, as well as guest speakers willallow students to gain real insight into how the subject relates to the world of work. All group4 project students will team up once a year for a residential in term 5, where they willundertake a team challenge

Course Title: Environmental Systems – Standard level

Number of sessions per week: 1

What is IB Environmental Systems?

Environmental Systems spans science and societies to provide students with an awareness ofthe role the environment plays in their lives and the systems operating within suchenvironments.

How will I be assessed?

MathematicsCourse Title: Mathematical studies and Mathematics Standard Level

What is IB Maths

The aims of this course are:

• To appreciate the multicultural and historical perspectives of the subject

Internal Assessment:

Mathematical studies: 20% on one Investigation and one Modelling Piece Mathematics SL: 20% on a Project involving the generation/collection, interpretation, and analysis and evaluation of

information and data Mathematics HL: 20% on two Portfolios. One project must be a mathematical investigation (requiring a formal conjecture

and mathematical proof) and the other involves mathematical modelling.

What is IB Theatre Studies?

The course seeks to furnish students with a well-rounded body of theatrical knowledge, methods and techniques through a varietyof theatrical roles. It is focussed on opening minds (core competences in the RSA Academy), stimulating creativity and providingstudents with an appreciation of the strengths and limitations of theatre in its diversity of forms and roles not only as an academicexercise, but more globally as a means of expression, social engagement and attempting to reach an understanding of the worldaround us.

Students will explore a variety of means of expressing a particular concept and will be expected to reflect upon, debate and justify allartistic decisions that are taken. In addition to this, students will be furnished with the necessary skills to undertake independentresearch in the Arts and those at Higher Level will be expected to provide perceptive evaluations of the sources of information. Therelationship between Drama Theory and Practice will also be explored and students will be expected to demonstrate anunderstanding of the impact that one has upon the other. The purpose of the IWBs is to support the development of theirartistic ideas and skills. They will be planning, recording, reflecting in their IWBs for each studio work they complete. Drawings, paintings, prints, ceramics, sculptures, collages, design work, digital artwork, photography, 3D pieces, textiles, mixedmedia work etc. The student will aim to complete at least one piece of studio work every week during the school year (more forphotography and digital works). What is an Advanced(Level 3) Diploma in Public Services?

A Diploma is very different to a BTEC, even if it is in the same subject. It is made up of Principal Learning; GenericLearning and Additional and Specialist Learning. In this case, Principal Learning is about the Public Services.At Advanced level, learners evaluate the principles and practices of public services. You will find out how differentleadership theories work and how public services are delivered through the European Union. You will learn aboutpeople management and public service values, community engagement and collaboration. You will also learn aboutpublic service funding and the accountability of the public services.

Generic Learning addresses Functional Skills in English, Mathematics and ICT and the development of your skills inthese areas to apply to public service needs. You will also develop your Personal Learning and Thinking Skills; you willalso undertake a work experience and complete an extended project.

Additional and Specialist Learning means other related qualifications which you can also take and which relate toyour Principal Learning. You will need 5 A*-C GCSEs, including English Language and Mathematics to do this course.

How will I be assessed?

There are five Principal Learning units, each are ninety guided learning hours long. Most are internally assessed andmoderated, but two units are externally assessed through written examinations. Your overall Diploma grade at the endof the course will be calculated by aggregating the marks you have achieved over the two years of study.

In what ways will I be taught?

Although you will learn a lot of theory, you will also learn through visits and involvement with the Public Services. Youwill also apply what you have learnt practically to real life scenarios.

What can I do next?

This is a good course for anyone who wants to study further at university. It is particularly useful for degree courses inGovernment and Politics, Economics and further study of Public Services. This is an ideal course for those who want towork at a senior leadership level within the Public Services. Remember that the Public Services relate to much morethan the uniformed branches. Employers also like Diplomas because they teach you the skills, knowledge and experiencenecessary for the world of work- even if you decide not to work in the Public Services.

This Diploma teaches students about the work, values, attributes and attitudes in the following sectors:

Health Justice Children & Young People Care

Students will learn how these sectors care for and support individuals, families, groups, communities and society. Theemployer-endorsed content is up-to-date and relevant, equipping learners with the knowledge and skills they need toprogress to further study or embark on a rewarding career.

How will I be assessed?

Principal Learning which involves two external examinations and four internally assessed pieces of coursework.

Additional & Specialist Learning which allows learners to choose a further qualification in an area of interest that inspires them.

Generic Learning which includes:

Functional Skills in English, Mathematics and ICT Extended Project which enables learners to pursue their interests and extend their learning in creative and innovative ways Personal, Learning and Thinking Skills which covers successful team working, self management, effective participation,

independent enquiry, reflective learning and creative thinking. Work Experience will provide enhanced work skills and a clear picture of life in their chosen sector.

In what ways will I be taught?

Lessons will be interactive and involve you working with others. There will be lots of hands-on experience and practicalwork.
