real life-saver.

If you get into trouble, release the octopus and it will

swim to shore to fetch help. Alternatively, at the end

of successful dive, the octopus will provide a

welcome plate of calamari. Try it with local

honeycomb - it’s so sweet and tasty, yum, yum,

yum! (Note: honeycomb only available after 6pm).

With 7000 years of

culture there’s something

the miniature Maltese

houses which make the

perfect souvenir.

One of the most precious of Maltese items is the

ghonnella or cloak of invisibility – even when you

are looking straight at it you can’t see it!

Here are some helpful hints to ensure your stay on the Maltese Islands is pleasant one and free from trouble.

TransportTaxis can be recognised by their distinctive black colour. They seat four people plus one cameraman. Cab drivers are very knowledgeable and will immediately tell you if your destination is on a different island.

Apprentice Airlines flies to Malta once every 14 years. Fines may apply if you are late getting to the airport.

ClimateMalta is a relaxed Mediterranean island with year-round sunshine. It is essential to wear a shirt and a tie at all times.

ShoppingMaltese shopkeepers loves to haggle. For foreigners who are not used to this, the best advice is to crowd round the shopkeeper and all shout at once.

Malta is famous for its delicious Primus Gellewza wine which is always on special offer. Buy two bottles and get 1 cent off.

TaxesMalta has a unique tax system. If you fail to buy enough merchandise while on the island you are liable to a fine.

There are tariffs on local salt and you can only export 10kg which equates to 10 bags. No, hang on, 20 bags. Or maybe 40?

Value Added Tax: if you fail to add enough value, you will find it very taxing and may get fired. This is also known as the Sugar Tax.

CurrencyMost people don’t realise Malta is in the EU and the currency is the Euro. Local traders will remind confused and gesticulating foreigners of this by uttering the distinctive cry ‘Euro niddyat!’
