Accidental CHT discharge believed to be caused by cleaning chemicals being dumped by berthing cleaners into VCHT system through drains, toilets, or sinks.
Navy Divers working under the water about 20 feet from discharge.
IMPACT: Diving operations stopped immediately. There were 4 divers from that team became ill within 72 hours. Another diver who used the effected diving equipment the following day also became ill. A few of the ill diver’s family members became ill as well.
Take Away:◦ Ensure shipboard personnel are
trained on importance of proper disposal of cleaning chemicals.
