THE FELLOWSHIP The Tzedek Social Justice Fellowship (TSJF) is a transformational experience for emerging social justice leaders that builds the capacity of organizations to effect change in Asheville and beyond. The Fellowship is committed to social justice, broadly defined, yet the work focuses primarily on LGBTQ rights, racial equity, and combatting anti- Semitism. Over the course of eleven months, Fellows develop essential skills to cultivate relationships within the local community, create powerful connections that bridge across bias, and organize grassroots movements for positive community change. The Fellowship builds individual and organizational capacity by engaging passionate emerging leaders in eleven- month, paid, full-time positions at social justice organizations throughout the greater Asheville, North Carolina area. In addition to working 30 hours each week at their host site organization, Tzedek Fellows spend 10 hours developing life and leadership skills to help them become successful leaders and remain resilient throughout their careers. The Tzedek Social Justice Fellowship requires full and active participation in all fellowship-related events and activities. It is a 40-hour per week commitment, including times outside of regular business hours. It is critical that the final candidate is truly passionate about becoming a Fellow and is committed to the spirit of personal and professional development. THE PRIMARY GOALS OF THE FELLOWSHIP ARE TO EQUIP FELLOWS WITH THE SKILLS TO: 1) Understand anti-Semitism throughout history and learn how to identify and effectively combat anti- Semitism in their communities. 2) Be powerful activists and advocates in the movement for LGBTQ rights. 3) Examine and combat oppression and discrimination within the context of eliminating racism. 4) Learn to build and work in diverse collaborative coalitions to achieve equity for all marginalized groups. 5) Expand personal and professional networks and co-create a community of social justice peers for life-long connection. 6) Positively impact the Asheville community by advancing the work of their host site organization.

7) Have satisfying, successful, and sustainable careers in social justice non-profits and grassroots organizing groups.

PARTICIPATION & TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES AND EXPECTATIONS: ● Participation in ongoing group activities including, but not limited to:

o A one-month paid orientation in August. o InnerVision, a personal growth program offering life skills in mindfulness, awareness, and clarity. o Weekly Fellow Forums with TSJF staff, including presentations and training sessions delivered by

local and regional trainers and social justice leaders. o Special social justice events (pop-up trainings, speakers, arts events) and social events for the

Tzedek cohort. o One-on-one meetings with TSJF staff and host site organization (HSO) supervisors. o Position-specific expectations and requirements as expressed by the HSO supervisor.

● Creation of an individual professional development plan, including the identification of resources and training opportunities in alignment with the plan goals.

● Attendance at national conferences including Creating Change and either The White Privilege Conference or the Facing Race Conference depending on the conference scheduling.

● Willingness to develop and nurture honest, trusting, and open relationships with other Fellows, TSJF staff, and HSO staff.

Organization and Position Details: Tzedek Fellow Focused on Jewish Life and Community Outreach at the Asheville Jewish Community Center The Asheville Jewish Community Center is the hub of Jewish community life in Asheville. The JCC is known throughout WNC for promoting health and wellness, social justice, and community. Our preschool, afterschool programs, summer camps, and adult programming are celebrated in the region. We are the Asheville home for national Jewish programs like the PJ Library and BBYO. The Tzedek Social Justice Fellow serves as a primary leader for social justice programming at the JCC, while simultaneously facilitating young adult and LGBTQ programming and serving as the secretary of Jewish Leadership collaborative. In their capacity, the Tzedek Fellow facilitates Jewish life for wide-ranging communities throughout Asheville. This is a critical position responsible for maintaining connections between the JCC and the broader community, while providing opportunities for community members to act on Jewish social justice values. ORGANIZATIONAL PROFILE: The Asheville Jewish Community Center has been the home of Jewish life in Western North Carolina since 1940. The Asheville JCC strengthens Jewish identity, celebrates Jewish culture and builds community through a wide variety of programs for people from all backgrounds. The Asheville Jewish Community Center provides opportunities for everyone in Western North Carolina to connect to Jewish life and culture. We focus on ensuring that community members are supported through every life stage, with programs that enhance community life and a sense of belonging. We continuously evaluate our programs, expanding and improving them to support our vibrant, evolving community. JOB DESCRIPTION: The Tzedek Fellow will report to the Community Life & Events Director. The Tzedek Fellow will work with other key JCC employees and community members (both volunteers and professionals) to meet the goals of the Fellowship.

Focus of Work • Community Collaborations: Strengthen collaborations between the JCC and other community

organizations and organizations including UNCA’s Center for Diversity Education, YWCA, the Center for Participatory Change, Community Relations Council, Youth Outright, and the Campaign for Southern Equality to coalition-build around issues of social justice and diversity such as anti-Semitism, racism, LGBT equality, and bullying, as well as facilitating collaborations between organizations.

• LGBTQ Programming: Grow and sustain an LGBTQ Focus Group at the JCC that assists in planning LGBTQ programming for the Jewish and larger community

• Young Jewish Adult Programming: Provide staff support for YAJA (the Young Adult Jews of Asheville) through bi-monthly+ programming

• Social Justice Programming: Grow and sustain social justice programming at the JCC and in collaboration with other community organizations

• General JCC Support: Provide general support for other JCC programs as needed DUTIES WILL INCLUDE:

• Continue to develop LGBTQ programming within the JCC and represent the JCC in work on LGBTQ issues in the Jewish and local community. Help to ensure the JCC maintains LGBTQ friendly practices.

• Collaborate with other Tzedek Fellows to expand LGBTQ and social justice programming and activities within the local community

• Establish and strengthen collaboration within the Jewish community on issues of social justice and LGBTQ equality

• Help to sustain and expand partnerships between the JCC and other organizations on shared projects and activities

• Help facilitate/organize the JCC’s young Jewish adult group (ages 22-30) and LGBTQJew group (ages vary)

• Provide program support for JCC children’s and community programs as needed • Expand Jewish-themed environmental programming within the JCC • Serve as community liaison, Agenda Committee member, and secretary for the Asheville Jewish

Leadership Collaborative (AJLC) and secretary for the Joint Security Task Force • Help represent the work of the JCC at Jewish and other community events such as Hard Lox (October),

Celebration Israel (April), and Blue Ridge Pride (October) • Create and/or identify existing models and resources to implement a Diversity Competency Skills

Workshop that educates volunteers and staff in the JCC community about issues of diversity and inclusivity using Jewish core values as a foundation

• Manage further community diversity projects or activities, collaborating with other Tzedek Fellows when appropriate

• Self directed/initiated programming that falls within any of the focus areas • Perform other duties as assigned

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS, ATTRIBUTES AND EXPERIENCE:

• Jewish and/or possess knowledge of Jewish culture, values & traditions • Knowledge of and commitment to LGBTQ issues • Experience with actively engaging in community organizing and/or social justice work • Demonstrate an aptitude and willingness to learn leadership skills • Computer skills, including ability to use Microsoft Office tools • Ability to work with diverse groups • Must pass a background check

PREFERRED SKILLS:

• Jewish program coordination and/or LGBTQ program coordination • Ability to manage multiple projects • Confidence in abilities, Willingness to take initiative • Experience working with youth, peers, and elders

ADDITIONAL DETAILS:

• The schedule is highly fluid and flexible. Often evening and/or weekend hours are required. Fellows receive a base salary of $28,000, employee sponsored health care or a health care stipend, and a professional development stipend of $1,000. The Fellowship begins with a month-long orientation starting on August 7, 2017.
