Position Overview

The purpose of the ABS is to inform Australia's important decisions by partnering and innovating to deliver relevant, trusted, objective data, statistics and insights.

As the central statistical authority for the Australian Government and provider of statistical services to the states and territories, we seek to deliver the most public value we can from the resources we receive through:

• providing the statistical information that Australia needs

• responding to the changing information priorities of our stakeholders

• enhancing the ways that we interact with our stakeholders

• developing and maintaining community trust, which is fundamental to our ability to collect high quality information

• coordinating and advising official bodies on statistics, including developing, and ensuring compliance with, statistical standards

• building our capacity to take advantage of opportunities, such as advances in technology, big data, and use of administrative information for statistical purposes

• ensuring cost-effect operations, including better utilising existing information, collecting information more efficiently, streamlining processes, and reducing the impact on those who provide statistical information.

The National Recruitment Unit (NRU) is responsible for securing talent to fill ongoing ABS staff vacancies, the recruitment of ABS Interviewers and for the administration of non-ongoing employment contracts. NRU is a small team of 12 staff in the Sydney and Canberra offices.

We are looking for an intern to work in our Sydney office.

The intern role will involve a combination of working on all aspects of the recruitment process as well as project work.

The project work will focus on assisting in creating a recruitment guide for our selection panels as well updating the look and feel of our applicant information kits. As such, we are looking for an intern with good written communication skills as well as an interest /understanding of recruitment and HR.

A team member in the National Recruitment Unit is part of a team responsible for frontline recruitment services. Generally your responsibilities will include:

• Responding to queries from internal and external clients via phone and electronically

• Creating new contracts and contract extensions for non-ongoing staff

• Managing the engagement of ongoing staff

• Undertaking criminal background and other pre-employment checks

• Conducting talent searches in eRecruitment system

• Maintaining up to date records of work in progress and completed

• Completing admin and/or adhoc tasks as required

We believe you should apply to these roles if you are highly motivated and can demonstrate most or all of the following:

• Good written and verbal communication skills including attention to detail

• Ability to meet tight and competing deadlines with a high level of accuracy

• Strengths in working in and contributing to a team environment

• Competence in using software packages and systems to complete tasks

• An aptitude to apply correct procedures and exercise judgement within those procedures

• Understanding and compliance with ABS policies, guidelines, values and corporate responsibilities, including legislative requirements and industrial agreements
