About The Falls Church Anglican (TFCA)

OVERVIEW

The Falls Church Anglican (TFCA) is a mature, dynamic, and growing church with historic roots that predate the American Revolution. History has unfolded in and around The Falls Church – and now God is doing a new thing in and through TFCA. We are in a season of growth in many dimensions – growth inspired by the Holy Spirit. We are an evangelical, Anglican congregation, adhering to biblical orthodoxy and embracing the active ministry of the Holy Spirit. We are located in northern Virginia, across the Potomac River from Washington, D.C, on a road that leads directly to the US Capitol building. As a mature and large congregation, poised at the forefront of the new Anglican Church in North America, TFCA seeks to humbly, prayerfully, and faithfully love and serve God and our neighbors in the DC metro area, as well as those around the world.

WHO WE ARE

TFCA has more than 2500 active members, with 1500 attending 3 Sunday o Services, each with its own style within the spectrum of Anglican liturgy.

Our Rector, John Yates, who has been with us for 37 years, leads TFCA. Our operating budget is $6.7 million. We serve in and benefit from active ministries in the following areas:

○ Youth Ministry ○ Children & Family Ministries ○ Healing Prayer ○ Congregational Care ○ Discipleship and Outreach ○ Worship and Music ○ Leadership Development (Timothy and Associate Timothy Programs, and

The Falls Church Fellows.) TFCA is a member of the Diocese of the Mid-Atlantic (DOMA), part of the Anglican

Church in North America (ACNA.) TFCA has a staff of more than 50 full and part time staff, including 7 clergymen and

clergywomen. The staff is led by the Rector, the Senior Director, and the vestry (governing board.)

We have planted 9 daughter churches in D.C. and Virginia and plan to start more. Through our church plants, we are able to spread the gospel and grow the Anglican movement.

HISTORY The Falls Church Anglican was founded in 1732 while Virginia was still an English colony. The City of Falls Church, VA was named for the church. George Washington and George Mason each served as vestrymen in the mid-1700s, before their service in the founding of the USA. The original Falls Church building and its congregation played active roles in the Revolutionary and Civil Wars.

CHANGING AND GROWING In 2006, after hard years of prayer and studied consideration on the part of the Rector and the congregation, the Falls Church congregation voted overwhelmingly to leave the Episcopal Church in the USA over serious doctrinal differences centering on the authenticity and authority of Holy Scripture. The Falls Church remained connected to the Anglican Communion as a member of first the Convocation of Anglicans in North America and then the newly formed Anglican Church in North America. The Falls Church (along with other Virginia congregations) was sued by the national Episcopal Church and the Episcopal Diocese of Virginia to take ownership of our church property. After lengthy litigation, we were required to forfeit our ownership of all church property. Our congregation vacated the historic church in May 2012, 280 years after our founding. Thus began what we call our “tabernacling time.” As a large congregation without a home base, we have leaned on the Lord more than ever, and He has taught us to be more dependent on Him. We have been tremendously blessed by a host of neighboring churches of various denominations who have physically and spiritually opened their doors to our worship and ministries. A Catholic high school auditorium is home to our large Sunday worship services. TFCA has palpably experienced the faithful hand of God ahead, behind, around, and through His provision for our every congregational need. And in our “tabernacling time” we continue to be a vibrant and growing congregation. God is doing an awe-inspiring brand-new thing at TFCA!

A NEW HOME In 2015, the congregation made the prayerful decision to purchase a large property at 6565 Arlington Boulevard, along the busy Route 50 Corridor – just one mile from our old location. A successful capital campaign achieved a three-year pledge goal of over $21 million, making it possible to purchase the property in June 2015. The site includes a 5-story office building, a parking garage, and space to build a new church. We joined existing medical tenants in the building and renovated space to establish a Ministry Center for ministry programs, with particular interest in facilitating Youth Ministry. We continue to hold our main worship services at a local Catholic high school auditorium.

We are praying for God to help us be visible to people in our new neighborhood, whom we hope to serve in Christ’s Love. We’re excited to continue to love and serve God – prayerfully and humbly responding as He directs our path. We glorify God for all that He has in store for our congregation! In 2018, we will open an extraordinary new sanctuary and supporting facilities, with plans for additional facilities in succeeding years. We look forward to once again having a place of our own in which to worship God.

A GREAT PLACE TO WORK! The Falls Church Anglican operates under the principle that a productive work environment is one in which individuals are able to enjoy the benefits and conditions of employment based on the individual’s ability to achieve results, without consideration of age, color, disability, sex, national origin, race, or veteran status. We do not require all employees to be Anglicans, but because of our essential identity as a community of faith in Jesus Christ, we require all employees to wholeheartedly believe and confess that Jesus Christ is the Way, the Truth, and the Life; no one comes to the Father but by Him. We uphold the sanctity and dignity of human life, the creation of humankind in God’s image as male and female, and the unchangeable standard of Christian marriage between one man and one woman as the only proper place for sexual intimacy and the basis of the family. Within this context, we are committed to equality of treatment in hiring and in all employment conditions and opportunities. With God’s help, our church staff strives to obey the Great Commandment by embodying the following values as we serve:

● Gratitude. We humbly grasp God’s grace and forgiveness and we are mindful and thankful for the many blessings we receive from God and others.

● Joy. We embrace fully the joy that God desires for those who follow Jesus and do His will. Laughter, humor, and fun are essential our staff health and well-being.

● Integrity. We act justly, adhering to the principles God has given us in scripture. We are honest in our work and our relationships, speaking and acting with undivided hearts. We use our time wisely and aim for excellence and effectiveness.

● Service. We imitate Jesus as humble servants in our attitude, actions, and communication. We serve generously, diligently, and responsibly.

● Respect. We treat everyone with honor, dignity, and courtesy, considering others better than ourselves. We listen well and communicate clearly and graciously.

● Unity. We “make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace” (Eph. 4:3). We look for the good and believe the best of one another. When conflicts arise, we follow Biblical teaching by “removing the logs” in our own eyes and going directly to our brother or sister to resolve the conflict with gentleness and respect. We do not carry grudges but prayerfully forgive one another as God in Christ has forgiven us.

Ministry Overview Crossroads and Cornerstone

PURPOSE AND PHILOSOPHY

The purpose of the Student Ministries of Crossroads (CR)(Grades 6-8) and Cornerstone (CS)(Grades 9-12) is to bring glory to God by fostering an environment that will allow the youth to dedicate their lives to Christ and mature in their walk with Him. We desire to see adolescents grow faithful to the Lord with the support of their community of peers and the discipleship of the Youth Family. Our goals are for kids to have a healthy maturity in Christ through evangelism and discipleship. While we value program, we do this primarily through relationships. Our Core Values are:

God’s Word is our message book and our method book God redeems people through Jesus Christ Healthy maturity in Christ comes through building relationships The primary responsibility for spiritual growth lies with the family True spiritual growth occurs internally, not just external changes You cannot give what you do not have

There are those who attend TFCA’s youth program who are unconvinced and uncommitted to Christ. There are those who desire to grow in Christ and are committed to Christ. Some are ready for some level of leadership. There are also friends of youth who need to hear of Christ and His redeeming love. Our focus is on all of the youth and their changing needs. Our ministry philosophy is rooted in the scriptures.

Youth Family: The Youth Family is a leadership team made up of volunteers who want to serve Christ, love each other, and grow with youth. Approximately 70 people (predominately 20-30 year olds) serve on Youth Family each year and give 8-10 hours of their time weekly: 30 with CR and 40 with CS. This ministry is discipleship based, with each of the Youth Family members discipling a few into order to reach many. Members of the Youth Family commit to focusing on a few people within CR/CS throughout the academic school year. Strengthened by their own fellowship together (by meeting for dinner, teaching by the Director of Youth Ministry, and prayer on Tuesday nights), the Youth Family “pours [their] lives into” a group of young people (specifically on Sunday nights when CR/CS meet) to produce healthy disciples of Jesus Christ functioning as spirit-filled believers in this world. As the Youth Family ministers to those in their small groups, they impact hundreds of youth that gather on Sunday nights. There is a mandatory Youth Family Retreat at the beginning of the school year. This is a time for leaders to get to know one another and receive teaching on discipleship of youth.

PROGRAM Program begins with the needs of the youth, and continues with revision and constant evaluation. Sunday Night Crossroads and Cornerstone: Crossroads is our Middle School ministry to approximately 150 students from 4:30-6:30 PM. Cornerstone is our High School ministry to approximately 250 students from 6:30-8:45 PM. During these large gatherings on Sunday evenings, there is time for fellowship (snacks at CR and dinner at CS), group games, worship, teaching by The Youth Director or Youth Staff, and small groups. Each grade is divided into four small groups: 2 guy and 2 girl groups. 2 to 3 Youth Family members lead each small group (10-20 students). Small group time provides a more intimate setting for students to spend time in the scriptures, sharing thoughts, and praying about their lives. Breakaway: Every year 600 kids attend our two annual youth retreats at Rockbridge Young Life Camp. It is a fantastic time of hearing the Gospel, deepening friendships, and for many kids, an opportunity to begin or recommit to a relationship with Jesus Christ. We hold a three night retreat for the high school students every February and a two night retreat for the middle school students in March.
