Interview with Lou Freeman

Glamour ndash in my view ndash is the trickiest area of portraitphotography There is a very very fine line to walk to hit thatldquoglamourrdquo feeling and not fall into either awkwardness orvulgarityhellip and Lou Freeman is a master at hitting the sweetspot every single time

It was an absolute delight to talk with Lou Freeman and learnabout her amazing career that lead her from being one of the twoever female Playboy photographers to becoming one of theleading educators in the photography industry

Lou uses body language masterfully not only in her photographswhere it is always spot on but with her clients to help them relaxand trust her

Speaking with her only confirmed how important this skill is whenworking professionally in photography and even more so whenyou work at this level where time is money and where celebritiesonly have a few minutes to allocate to a shoot

Without further a do itrsquos my honour to share this interview withyou

What can you tell me about working for Playboy all thoseyears

Playboy was a male-photographer dominated workplace (Iwas one of the two women to ever shoot for playboy) and Iwanted to give women a voice in the work that portrayedthem by bringing beauty strength and sophistication to theimages in the magazine

To achieve that I created images with an edge of extremefemininity and extreme glamour all while keeping the imagegenuine for the woman I was photographing This resultedin strong sexy and confident images

What makes for a successful glamour portrait

There are three key factors

current known music stars and Andashlisters Her clients are among the mostrespected and recognised names inAmerica and Europe and includeHanersquos Brands Ralph Lauren CoorsLight Target Macyrsquos Orvis Lord andTaylor and Kohlrsquos Niki Taylor Cee loGreen Joe Montana Lisa Bonet JamieFoxx Tiger Woods and EvanderHolyfield

Today Lou in based in Atlanta whereshe divides her time shooting fashionand glamour photography directingvideos and commercials creatingwebsites and apps for mobiledevices And if this doesnrsquot keep herbusy enough she also creates directsand presents high end photographyeducation films and shows You willfind all these education resources byclicking HERE

1 You have to find their best features to make themlook as beautiful as possible I move mywomen around a lot to find the perfect angles

2 Glamour comes from a feeling of self confidencewhich comes from the posture in the pose and from arelaxed expression The slightest tension in the handsface or expression will remove any feeling of glamourfrom the portrait

3 Connection in the eyes If the eyes are deadeverything goes away

In order to achieve these objectives you have to get yoursubject to trust you and you need to be perfectly calm andin control yourself or the stress will come out in the imagesTalking with them a lot helps them relax and this starts withthe first phone call you make

Note from Dee Body Language knowledge plays an enormous

role in a) helping your subject to trust you b) creating

connection and c) identifying discomfort that will remove the

glamour feeling from the portrait

Do you find that there is a difference between female and malephotographers when it comes to glamour photography

Being one of the only women working at Playboy a lot of themodels would confide in me What I learnt is that they foundI understood them better and it was more comfortable forthem to shoot with me but that some male photographerswould make them feel more sexy during the shoot

What observations have you made about glamour photographyover the span of your career

Before the 90rsquos women were considered sexy when theywere super glamed up boobs nails clothing etc It wasreally fake Then came the era of the super skinny womenstill with a lot of fake glam But in the last few years wersquoreseeing the trend move away from the super glam to atailored natural and more healthy look

Healthy beauty is a lot more sexy now than fake beauty

For the longest time women didnrsquot have a say in the worldor about their looks but now they do and this makes mereally happy

What Body Language cue makes you cringe in photographs

More than just a cue itrsquos more an intention What makes mecringe is when glamour is photographed by a man andthe woman has a stripper look covered in oil string bikinietc It takes away from the person makes her look like anobject and there is no emotion to it That really makes mecringe

To me glamour has to be an invitation not delivered on aplatter What makes glamour provocative sexy andbeautiful is the flirtation the intriguehellip not the actual act
