Dear Friends, - As that wonderful song says, “Celebrate, good times - come on!!” Pet Orphans is now officially 40 years old! As for my contemporaries (so lovingly known as “e Greatest Generation”) though we may now be a bit “long of tooth” we are still truckin’ and grateful to be just “over the hill” - not under it!! So we are going to celebrate this important anniversary in a very special way, by saluting the heroic “U.S. Military Working Dog Teams” who have saved the lives of thousands of our troops in the battlefields. Our guest of honor is John C. Burnam (U.S. Army, ret.), dog handler in the Vietnam conflict, and founder of the “National Monument For Working Dog Teams.” is organization is erecting a magnificent memorial monument to honor those that served in that capacity since World War II. e right hand-side of the monument includes a small drinking foun- tain for canine visitors, depicting a soldier holding a canteen that pours water into his helmet. Mr. Burnam is also a published author of two books that are testimonials to the courageous dogs with whom he shared the tragic life of war. We hope that you will plan to join us on Friday evening, September 20th, for this very heart-warming tribute to their service. If you are interested in attend- ing, please respond where indicated on the enclosed envelope in order to receive an invitation as seating is limited for this event. Hope to see you then. Dear Friends, - As that wonderful song says, “Celebrate, good times - come on!!” Pet Orphans is now officially 40 years old! As for my contemporaries (so lovingly known as “The Greatest Generation”) though we may now be a bit “long of tooth” we are still truckin’ and grateful to be just “over the hill” - not under it!! So we are going to celebrate this important anniversary in a very special way, by saluting the heroic “U.S. Military Working Dog Teams” who have saved the lives of thousands of our troops in the battlefields. Our guest of honor is John C. Burnam (U.S. Army, ret.), dog handler in the Vietnam conflict, and founder of the “National Monument For Working Dog Teams.”

This organization is erecting a magnificent memorial monument to honor those that served in that capacity since World War II. The right hand-side of the monument includes a small drinking foun-tain for canine visitors, depicting a soldier holding a canteen that pours water into his helmet. Mr. Burnam is also a published author of two books that are testimonials to the courageous dogs with whom he shared the tragic life of war. We hope that you will plan to join us on Friday evening, September 20th, for this very heart-warming tribute to their service. If you are interested in attend-ing, please respond where indicated on the enclosed envelope in order to receive an invitation as seating is limited for this event. Hope to see you then.

We are thoroughly enjoying our newly furnished buildings next door. We now have a much need-ed Training Center “Haut Dog High School”,

a larger grooming facility that welcomes those who wish to wash their own dogs or to be assisted by our groomer at the “Tails Waggin’ Doggie Wash.”

and a larger, more beautiful pet shop “Pet Pavil-ion”, that has a complete line of supplies and toys for both dogs and cats.

This is in addition to our “Anita Landis Community Center”, which is the attractive “beehive” for many Pet Orphans’ activities from “Camp Pet Pals”, “Dramautism” classes, lectures, scout groups to fund-raising events like Poker Nights. With the greater “multi-tasking” afforded with these buildings, we can offer greater services to our community, both humans and animals, that need our assistance in so many ways!!Also, you our friends, should take advantage of these new facilities. You can freshen up your pooch and/or shop for any of their needs at a very reasonable cost knowing that these dollars go to support our canine and feline “household.” Please use the enclosed coupons to give you a head-start in enjoying these newest additions to Pet Orphans.

Dramautism, a valuable addition to our Humane Education program, is a new dramatic arts program for children with autism/Asperger’s Syndrome and oth-er disabilities. We are combining drama therapy with pet therapy to help the kids develop social skills. Dogs will be used to help facilitate conversations and friendships between students. Classes include acting, writing, creating characters, art projects, building sets, costumes, music, karaoke, and lots of puppy fun - which will give a world of opportunity for “hands-on” relationships to be built between children and pets. Peer Role Mod-els, ages 5-9, are needed too. They must not have pet allergies and enjoy dogs/cats. The classes will be held at Pet Orphans in our Commu-nity Center. First session is between July 13th-August 17th! For more information, please contact Neslie Akkol: [email protected] or Debra Clark: [email protected].

DRAMAUTISM

There are so many ways for you who love pets to help make the lives of our orphans more comfort-able and happy until they join a new family. The first is through becoming a VOLUNTEER. Our “kids” really appreciate the T.L.C. they receive from our wonderful volunteer team, which is so nec-essary for their health and mental well being. But equally essential are those of you who open your heart and your home to FOSTER a pet that needs extra special care to put the nightmares of its past life forever to rest. Fostering is truly saving the life of a precious animal who is losing hope of a fu-ture. It is so rewarding to make such a positive difference to one who needs your help so desperately. Fostering is also a wonderful gift to give if you are not able to adopt either temporarily or for other reasons. Please give FOSTERING a serious consideration as there is always such a desperate need for short-term care! Please contact our Adoption Coordinator, Miriam, if you can help in this way: [email protected].

Sharing Is Caring!!

One of the fundamental principles of Pet Orphans of Southern California is our commitment to animal medical care through our Good Samaritan Program. This vital program financially assists “pet parents”, in these rough economic times, when they are faced with unexpected veterinary bills that they cannot afford or when are in need of spay/neuter assistance for their animals. Our Good Samaritan Program also enables us to transfer dogs and cats with medical ailments from City Shelters to our Campus for veterinary treatment and then on to adoption into loving homes. It’s an unfortunate truth, that each day, many animals at public shelters may be euthanized due to minor ill-nesses or injuries, or even suffer needlessly, due to lack of available care, funding or space. Your generous support will assist our Organization in transferring more “medical cases” to our facility. Our Organization constantly receive calls from folks, whom for one reason or another, cannot afford the medical care their pets so desperately need and deserve. By providing this crucial service to our community, it is our belief that this helps keep more of our four-legged friends with their families. Otherwise, the own-ers may be forced to relinquish their pets through no fault of their, just because they are unable to afford necessary veterinary care. Therefore, we feel this program not only offers essential financial assistance to our friends and neighbors, but helps curb the “homeless” animal population by keeping pets and “their people” together.Already this year (when funding has been available), Pet Orphans has helped numerous dogs and cats through this wonderful program. We thank all of our donors for lending a paw and making this possible! One of our goals for the future is to convert a space in our building into an actual vet office so that we can have a Vet on site to administer medical care to animals in need. Doing this will help us control the rising costs of vet care not only for our precious Orphans, but for all of our furry friends in need of a “helping hand”.

POOR LITTLE Ivy! She was dumped in East Valley Shelter the VERY DAY she was due to give birth. Luckily, our Shelter manager was at the facility when Ivy delivered her FIVE TINY BABIES, so they were brought immediately to “our house”, where they are now cozy, safe, and given T.L.C. by our Staff. HAPPY MOTHERS DAY, IVY!

Cuddles aka Grouchy, is living the good life after being “saved” from the streets of Van Nuys back in 2011 by Pet Orphans. Although she still has a slight limp from her leg and pelvic surgeries, Cuddles continues to thrive and enjoy some of her favorite ac-tivities – chillin’, chasing squirrels, eating and more eating! Thanks to everyone at Pet Orphans for literally saving Cuddles’ life – she gives you all two “paws” up!K. L. Brooks

Ellie formerly India is trying to pass herself off as a cat since hearing they have 9 lives and don’t have to obey commands. Talk about being a smart dog, she is the best!Rick Orci

Stormy adjusted very quickly. Put the Big Boy in his place as soon as she came home. They get along fine now. She is a sweety. Loves to cuddle and being petted. Very smart too. Knows the food comes out of the kitchen. Beats me to the kitchen in the morning probably because he has four paws- I only have two! I was very lucky getting her. You run a great place there.Thanks.Christa SaevkeStormuy

“From Little Acorns Great Oaks Grow!”That is the main premise behind HUMANE EDUCATION! For a child to become a caring, loving, and responsible adult, they must be taught these important aspects of life at an early age. This is why Humane Education must be introduced in childhood. Pet Orphans believes in teaching these concepts through “hands on” experiences that are exciting, challenging, and hopefully memorable to little ones.Involvement in “Pet Pals”, and our new program “Dramautism” are designed to offer human understanding and awareness through interaction with pets.

Forty years is a L-O-N-G time to live through and survive (it’s 280 in dog years!!). Yes, there have been a few bumps in the road to cope with, including a disastrous economy, that could have caused our organization go “belly up.” However, we survived, thanks to the constant, desperately needed support YOU GAVE US to care for our helpless orphans. You lent us a “critical paw” when it was most important! There is NO WAY to thank you enough, not only from us, but also from the pre-cious animals who join us in blessing you for giving them a future!Have a wonderful, fun-filled summer with friends, family – AND – with your “Special Someone”, “Hand-In-Paw”!

Best wishes from the board, staff and volunteers of Pet Orphans

Tips To Keep Your Pet Happy This Summer!

• Make sure your pet has plenty of cool water. If the bowl is outdoors, see that it’s kept in a shady spot and replenish whenever possible.

• Be aware of signs of heat exhaustion. Remember, if it’s hot for you, it’s hot for them! Lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea, reddening of the gums and excessive panting are all warnings.

• You know the old saying “the sidewalk was so hot you could fry an egg on it?” Well, imagine walking on that bare feet! That’s what it’s like for your animal. Feel the pavement with your hand. If it’s scorching, it’s not a good time to walk your dog. Try for early morning or evening, when the sun is not at its zenith.

• If you have a long-haired dog, don’t be fooled into thinking a “summer cut” will do the trick. For some, it’s ok, but for others fur acts as an insulation from the extreme rays of the sun. If your cat is under the sun, particularly if it’s light colored, make sure you put on sunscreen on the tips of their ears- they are quite susceptible to skin cancers!

And your #1 alert for the summer: Never leave your pet in an un-air-conditioned car! Leave the hot dogs on the barbeque, thank you! Now, go throw a ball and have some fun!
